Reinstalling to save hard drive space

I currently use an older PC which only has a 40GB hard drive. A year or so ago I added an 80GB external HDD in which I use primarily for saving pictures, videos, MP3's, etc. in order to alleviate space constraints on my primary C: drive.
I didn't think about it but when I first installed ITunes I should have probably installed it to my 80GB E: drive versus my primary C: drive due to the amount of drive capacity the application takes up. Now I'm months down the road with a very large music library and I'd like to know if there's a way to reinstall the application on my 80GB external E: drive without losing all of the tunes in my music library. Appreciate any help on this.
Thanks !

The iTunes application itself cannot be installed anywhere other than on the boot drive, but as Katrina says, you can move the content. Her advice is good, but an alternative is to just drag the entire iTunes folder (the entire folder, not just the iTunes Music folder) to your desired location. Then hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location. This has the advantage of allowing you to take the external drive to another computer and have your entire iTunes library available should you wish it.
Note that in either process, you should make sure that the external drive is turned on and mounted before you launch iTunes.
Regards.

to save hard drive space, can I put my iMovie projects and clips on an external drive?

    Yes.
To preserve your projects, all moves should be done from within iMovie, (not the Finder).
First, the external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). FAT32 will not work. You can reformat using Disk Utility if you need to.
When importing video from your camera, you can specify your external drive as the target on the import screen.
For existing projects, you should move using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
There is an error in the instructions where it says to drag the project icon to the icon in the Event Library. You should instead look for your hard drive icon in the Project Library.
You can move events using these instructions.
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c
If you want to move Events, and copy photos, copy music, etc for editing on another Mac, you should use the FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA feature after moving the Project as above.

  • I want to create a movie in iMovie 10 and watch in on Apple TV. What is the best work flow to save hard drive space?

I want to create a movie in iMovie 10 and watch in on Apple TV. What is the best work flow to save hard drive space?

    Jim,
Thanks for the advice. I have avoided iMovie Theater because that would soon use all of my free iCloud allowance (although that could be an option). I have been sharing to iTunes at 720p thinking that my picture using Apple TV would be better than Large. I see now that I could use about 30% less hard drive space by using Large instead. Do you think I will experience an annoying difference in picture quality?

  • Storing iPhoto files elsewhere to save hard drive space

The 80 MB hard drive on my iMac is nearly full. The iPhoto Library folder in "Pictures" indicates 26.6MB of images stores. I would like to be able to save some of the original files on CD or DVD to free up critical space and give the hard drive some breathing room again.
1-Can I store just specific folders that I've created, e.g. "Family Visit 4/28-30/2005" (which crosses 3 different days), or must I store only by date?
2-Which files (form which folders in the iPhoto Library) specifically would I copy to CD or DVD?
3-Can these easily be brought back into iPhoto later if I wish to print any of the images or work on them?
4-Are there any other storage tricks I should know?
5-Is there a source for this information from Apple?
6-Or is the answer to simply export as original to CD or DVD?
Thanks. Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Rich:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First how much free space do you have on your HD? It is strongly recommended you keep a minimum of 15% or 10G, which ever is greater, free for system and application swap and cache files.
Using the Share->Burn menu option you can burn rolls or albums of photos to disk in a format that will allow you to mount and view the disk in iPhoto and copy the photos back into the library.
iPhoto has a new capability of just creating aliases of the source files so you can keep the source files on another drive or media and have a smaller library on your boot drive. Here's how I set up my library that way:
Using iPhoto 6 in the Alias Mode
My workflow involves using iPhoto and another image management application, iView MediaPro, on the same source files. Here's how:
I have my source files on a second HD in my own folder system. I use iView MediaPro as my primary image management application.
I have iPhoto set up to use aliases instead of importing the full file into its system. That way my 25,600+ files (27G) are represented by an iPhoto library of only about 1.75G. That will grow depending on the number of edits made in iPhoto. iPhoto never touches the source files. All edits are done on a copy that's created in the Modified folder in the library folder. Any edits done by iView will be visible by iPhoto but only in the edit view or in books, slideshow, calendars. The thumbnail is not updated. Another shortcoming to this method is if a photo is added to an existing source folder it must be manually imported into iPhoto and there moved to the corresponding roll in iPhoto to complete the match. My workflow does not require that. Also if a photo is deleted in iPhoto the source file is not touched.
This method is laptop friendly as you can have your source files on an external and only a small library on the laptop. If the external is dismounted the library is useable in a limited way, i.e. you can view thumbnails, add, move or delete albums, add comments and add keywords (but with some hassle). What you can't do is edit, work with books, calendars, slideshow or any operation which requires moving a thumbnail. Once the external is remounted the library is fully functional again.
So there's more than one way to keep free space on your boot drive.

  • Does iCloud help me save hard drive space?

my hard drive is always getting too full and this affects performance. Can I use i cloud to store content so I can delete it from my hard drive?

iCloud does not provide general file storage in the manner of MobileMe's iDisk - you would need a third party service to do this. This page examines some options:
    http://rfwilmut.net/migrate3
If you are talking about a lot of data, online storage would be very very slow. You might be better off simply buying an external hard disk and moving data (not the System or Documents folder) to it - though you should never only keep data in just one place, either locally or online. Backups are the key to happiness: someone who has only one copy of data is going to lose it sooner or later - a hard disk can fail, equipment can be damaged or stolen, online backups can fail.
Backup, then backup again. One day you'll be so glad you did.

  • Run out of Hard Drive space using Premiere Cs5- Can I save my work, buy and new hard drive?

I am in the middle of a project using premiere cs5 and I have run out of hard drive space. Can I save it, buy a new hard drive and install Premiere and then reopen it again without  it effecting my project?

If you are talking about only having one drive for Windows and programs AND video data and project files, a better option is to buy a second drive and move your projects and video data files to the new drive

  • Can't download applications (poss due to hard drive space issue)?

    Hi there,
I'm having major hard drive issues with my MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.11 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM laptop.
I use it for video editing and also keep music on it. However for the video editing I use an external hard drive, though I've found some Final Cut Pro files on my internal hard drive before and deleted them whenever I've found them. Sometimes it's an Imovie project, sometimes a straightforward final cut project, sometimes a playout of a final cut project.
My problem is that I now have almost no hard drive space, to the point where I wasn't able to save a Word file last week due to insufficient disk space! I emptied the trash and managed to get it to save in the end.
I immediately went on to the discussions pages and it was suggested to try WhatSize, OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory to identify the files that were taking up all the room. Unfortunately NONE of these applications will download onto my laptop. They're not the only ones, I tried downloading a couple of other applications for music and the like and NOTHING will download!
I went through everything that I felt I knew for certain that I could delete without being detrimental and freed up a small bit of room and tried again but still NOTHING. I then used Onyx on the suggestion of another post and freed up a few gigs (I went from 1.7gb available to 7gb available) and assumed that this would do the trick, however, it hasn't!
What happens when I try to download these (or any) applications is that when i click the "Download Now" area on the webpage it begins to move onto what should be a download progress page or a "download complete" page but instead just spends an eternity "loading", with the little loading wheel on the left of the tab just spinning around and around. I tried leaving it literally all night last night but to no avail, opened it back up again and still the circle was spinning around and around "loading". This has been the case for the several dozen attempts I've made, no matter what the website.
It seems like something of a Catch 22 if the situation is that I can't download these applications that will help me to free up Hard Drive space, because I don't have any Hard Drive space! Though I'd have thought that the 7gb I now have would be ample. Did my laptop turn to self preservation mode perhaps when the hard drive was down to the bare minimum and I wasn't even able to save word documents?
If anybody can help it'd be HUGELY appreciated...
    All the best,
    Rory

If you open a Finder window you can also sort by size by clicking the size column header. In view options you can also set it to calculate all sizes so it will also show folder sizes. Although not as handy as the cataloging applications you can at least start tracking down where the disk space is going. With video you can probably just copy half a dozen files off and immediately free up many GB.
Note that this isn't just a matter of convenience. OSX makes lots of temporary files and is doing it all the time. If it can't find space for those files it can result in a serious drive crash and that could cost you several hundred dollars in recovery expenses. A Sig indicates, you need space just for computer operation. I feel the % recommendation is a bit vague since people use drives ranging from 10 - 1000 GB in size. My computer regularly uses 6GB of hard drive space for temporary files, and I like to leave wriggle room, so I usually leave at least 15-20GB. You can check the temporary file usage by looking at VM in Activity monitor.
As BDaqua observes, having a crowded drive also slows down your computer. If it has to hunt for nooks and crannies in which to place bits and pieces of bigger files that takes time. Normally one does not have to worry so much about fragmentation of files on a Mac, but your scenario of working with large files on a really crowded drive may be defying that generalization.

  • Missing hard drive space after aborted attempt at sharing iMovie project with YouTube

So, recently I tried sharing an iMovie project with YouTube.  I clicked on the project in my project library, then selected share with YouTube from the drop down menu.  I chose to share it as a HD 720 project.  At this point, I had 27 GB of free hard drive space. After the project was converted (or whatever it's called, a process which took about half an hour, and which left me with about 6.5 GB of hard drive space), but before the project was actually exported or shared with or uploaded or published to YouTube (the second step), I saw that it was going to take three hours to upload, so I decided I wanted to share it as a non-HD video, in order to save time and space on my HD.  I cancelled the upload.  I then deleted the project in my imovie projects folder (since it now had the HD logo beside the name), intending to just start over and share the project in 960x540.  Thing is, after deleting every trace of it I could find in iMovie, in my Documents Folder, in my Movies folder, and in iTunes, I only reclaimed 4 GB of space on my hard drive (leaving me with 10 GB).  So what happened to the missing 17 GBs, and how can I get them back?  Also, the amount of space used in order to share that project just seems excessive to me, so I realize that something else might be going on here.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Comments?
    Thanks.

  • Disappearing Hard Drive Space After Yosemite Update

After installing OS X Yosemite my hard drive space has dwindled to basically nothing, rendering my computer useless.  I had at least 50 gb (maybe more) of hard drive space before updating from mavericks to yosemite.  Now, after using my computer for 30 mins or less I get an error message saying that my storage space is low. After a restart I will get about 600 mb of storage but then the cycle repeats.  Since I have upgraded to Yosemite I have not saved or downloaded any large files but there is a significant amount of storage space (104 gb) used in the other category.  It is not consistent with my usage. I initially had file vault encryption turned on but I thought maybe that was the cause of my disappearing hard drive space so I turned file encryption off and still no luck.

You are too low on drive space for iDVD to run properly. It is recommended that you try to have about 15-20 GB free for the application to run. See if you can delete anything to free up more space. Or, move more of your files to your external drive. iDVD needs to be on your computer's drive, so don't move it, or any of the iLife applications to your external drive.
You can create iMovies on an external drive, move your entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives, but I find iDVD works better if I create its projects on my main drive. I save all of my iDVD projects as disk image files and then move those files to my external drive for saving my projects. This allows me to delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie project used in it, which gives more free space on my drives.

  • Limiting the hard drive space on a managed account

I'm setting up a managed account and want to limet the amount of hard drive space the person gets to use
mac minni solocore   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Once again, a macosxhint comes in handy. The hint describes one way of converting an existing account:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031104223355900
Setting up a new account is easier. Just create a disk image of the desired size, making sure the name of the mounted volume is the same as the user's "home" folder (the name of the disk image doesn't matter). Uncheck the "Ignore ownership..." checkbox in "Get Info", and make sure the user owns both the mounted volume, and the dmg file. Place the disk image in the top level of the user's "home" folder, then change the ownership of the user's folder to "system" (root).
Then, from an "admin" account, enter the command below in "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app", substituting the user's short name for 'username', and the correct name of the disk image:<pre style="overflow:auto; padding: 5px; width: 500px ; font-size: 10px; border:1">sudo /usr/bin/nicl . -create /users/username home_loc '<home_dir><url>file://localhost/Users/username/diskimagename.dmg</url></home_dir>'</pre>But as I mentioned, there are drawbacks to using disk images and it isn't all that effective unless you hunt down every last place on the system where the user has the privileges to save files (including everybody else's "Drop Box" folders. I only mentioned it because it does get brought up as a strategy.

  • Hard Drive Space Eaten, but where? - 10.6

I can't figure out where 120 GB of Hard Drive Space has gone.  I've scoured other similar threads, but none like this:
    1 - 451 GB are listed as being used (in Finder/About My Mac/Whatsize/Activity Monitor/etc)
2 - outside programs, including WhatSize, list less.  For example, Whatsize (which I paid for), only finds 331 GB of used space (but lists 451 GB as "used" in the upper left corner).
3 - commands like sudo du -hd1 only show me using 284 GB.
I'd like to find WHERE the 120 GB is being eaten before trying to figure out WHY.  But I got into the root directory in finder anyway, and found nothing unusual.
More information - I'm using Snow Leopard, I was using Lion earlier but got tired of "Out of Memory" errors (when only 430 / 500 GB were shown, but all sources, as being used).  I erased the hard drive in Disk Utility and did a clean install, last week.  At that time, I was "using" 410 GB after reinstalling files- so 40 GB have gone missing just this week (I'm not doing much - No, it isn't because iTunes or iPhoto are making copies of things).  I should say, overall, the system is screaming fast and working like lightning and I'm happier (compared to Lion).
And finally - the first thing that happened when I bought this laptop was that I had a logic board failure.  Literally one day out of the box. So maybe this computer is a lemon.  This is my first Mac too.

Where  did  my  Disk  Space  go?
    Slimming your hard drive
OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.
    Mac OS X (10.6.7)
Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.

  • I lost about 30 gigs of hard-drive space from ScreenFlow, how do I get it back?

I shut down the computer, and opened up screenflow and exited it. However the 30 gigs is still missing. I got an error saying out of space while I was recording a webcam and now the 30 gigs is gone. I only have 5 gigs of hd space left on my computer when it should be closer to 35 gigs left. I ran cleanmymac but that didn't find the missing hard-drive space.

First, get rid of "CleanMyMac," which is a scam. The developer's instructions don't completely remove it. Follow those instructions, then do as below.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Never again install "CleanMyMac" or anything like it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
Then look up in the "ScreenFlow" documentation where the applications saves files, and delete the files.

  • Microsoft Word 2008 wonays no hard drive space available, which

I have 196 GB of free hard drive space as well as 4 GB of RAM on my MacBook Pro. No other applications are running. No volumes are mounted to the desktop. I am running the most recent Mac OS (10.5.8) and have installed all Microsoft Office 2008 updates.
Yet when I go to save a 7 MB Word Document--which is already saved to my hard drive--after making a small change, I get this error message:
"The disk is full trying to write to 'MacIntosh HD'. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk.
Try one or more of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs. and windows.
*Save the document on another disk."

Just my 2 cents, after encountering exactly the same problem: I saved the same file in the .docx format, having previously directed Word 2008 to use the 97-2004 .doc format.
While this didn't remove the problem of Auto-save complaining about the bogus disk-full issue, it did seem to allow me to save the document continuously without complaint.
