Reinstalling windows on bootcamp

i use imac with tiger os x10.5. recently i reinstalled the os and bootcamp. the bootcamp will not install vists ultimate. when it restarts on install command it is stuck on the white screen flashing apple, stop and querry mark on the screen. sometimes it goes back to the mac os instead of installing windows. i checked bootcamp patition format and it is ms-dos. please what can i do to get windows installed?

I was unwittingly sold an illegal OEM Windows 7....I'm going to buy from a more reputable source and install Windows 7 Retail version (buying software in Vietnam is a nightmare).
I was planning on using Mac Disk Utility to do one of two things to reinstall Windows 7:
a) Restore to single Mac Partition
or
b) Erase the disk and create a single partition for Windows (not sure I want to use this option as I'm not sure if it affects the Mac partition).
After running one of these options I was just going to run the Bootcamp Windows installation like I did the first time....
So are you saying I don't have to do this?
Can I simply log into my Windows Bootcamp Partition and boot from DVD and format/install? I assume this erases everything on Windows Partition and installs Windows 7 over the old illegal version?
Of course I will back up all data (windows and mac)
Thanks for your help (just bought Mac a month ago for first time).

  • How to reinstall Windows 8.1 on Bootcamp?

I am trying to reinstall Window 8.1 on Bootcamp after Disk Utility reported that the hard drive it was originally located on was failing and needed to be replaced. I did so. Now when Windows 8.1 installer launches, it thinks I'm doing an upgrade and insists that I "reboot Windows Normally" and then launch the Installer, which is impossible because it's freshly formatted, NEW hard drive.
Here are the steps that I followed:
    1) Disk Utility reports that Boot Camp drive is failing and replace it.
    2) Remove failing hard disk, replace with new one.
    3) Launch Bootcamp Assistant.
    4) Download support drives to USB stick.
    5) Begin install process using same Windows disk (64-bit FULL VERSION) used previously.
    6) Windows Installer asks for Product Key.
    7) I enter product key.
    8) WIndows asks to agree to license terms.
    9) Setup presents ONLY two choices:
         Upgrade Installation
         Custom Installation
    10) I choose Upgrade.
    11) Windows Setup reports that Upgrade can only take place from Windows environment, to eject Windows Install disk, and to reboot into Windows "normally." Cannot eject Windows install disk. Click Close box.
    12) Windows Installer relaunches.
    13) Install process starts over again.
    Please note:
    1) This is a fully licensed copy of Windows 8.1
    2) I am using it on the same Mac as the original installation. Only change is the hard drive.
    3) This is not an authentication issue. Windows accepts the Product Key.
    4) Parallels is not involved in any way.
I have talked to several Windows support teams. None were helpful and ultimately said this was a Bootcamp/Apple problem
Apple Support was much more helpful but said they'd never encountered this problem before and were flummoxed.
I have reformatted the Bootcamp hard disk several times. At one point I thought the issue might be that the Mac still thinks the original Windows installation exists because I kept the same name for the new hard disk. Renaming and reformatting did not change the behavior.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I wound up solving, or at least working around my problem. Selecting "Custom Install", instead of Upgrade, took me to a dialog box where  Installer could format the Bootcamp drive from scratch. Installation then proceeded as expected. Unfortunately this cost me my partition, but that was better than being stuck in this Upgrade Catch-22. Note that formatting and partitioning this drive within the Boot Camp assistant did not solve my problem.

how to reinstall windows 8 on bootcamp macbook pro, without losing anything on OS (Apple) side

Start Bootcamp Assistant then select the option to remove Windows and return your drive to a single partition. Once Windows is removed start Bootcamp Assistant again and select the option to install Windows. Follow the Bootcamp instructions for installing Windows.
This process will not cause lose of OSx data or applications if done correctly. But as allways, create a good backup of your data because things sometimes go wrong or instructions are not followed causing data lose.

  • Reinstalling windows 7 on bootcamp

I just got a new iMac (late 2013) 27" with Fusion drive, running Mavericks. I successfully installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp Assistant and everything is running fine. (I haven't activated it yet because I'll be setting up Parallels in the next few days.) This morning I realized I installed Windows 7 Home Basic rather than Premium. Do I need to uninstall Windows, destroy the Bootcamp partition and start over or is there some way I can do an upgrade in place?

Hi, I just found this post and have a similar situation. A couple months ago I got a new MBP 13" and installed Windows 7 Home Premium using Boot Camp and an ISO image downloaded from a site I was referred to by Microsoft support. I have an actual installation disc for Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit but for some reason the install disc wouldn't load during the installation process trying to use my third party (OWC/Pioneer) external BD drive. When I installed the ISO version I entered the product key of my bought version of Windows 7 as instructed by Microsoft. Now I'm getting messages that my copy of Windows 7 is not genuine and it won't accept my product key during the activation process. I borrowed an Apple USB Super Drive and wanted to try and reinstall Windows 7 again over the existing install using my installation disc. I will try your suggestion of just doing it in the Windows partition so I don't have to go through the entire Boot Camp setup process again.
My question is how do I know if Boot Camp needs updating after I reinstall Windows? Will it prompt me or is there a way to check? I still have the USB flash drive with the support software I downloaded during the original installation. Thank you for your assistance and any other guidance you have for this process.

  • How to Reinstall Windows on Existing Bootcamp Partition

I've been running Windows 7 under Bootcamp on my 2011 MacBookPro. I've run into a situation where Windows7 will no longer install updates. I worked one day with Microsoft for over an hour but they could not find what was causing the problem. FYI, when looking into this problem, the error code that is produced is Error Code 8007010B. I have found nothing substantial online in regards to this code.
I've used Winclone (a Mac application) in the past without issues to restore a Boot Camp Windows partition. Since purchasing Winclone 3.4 I've made several backups, but now that I am actually trying to restore one of those backups I'm getting a message:
"the image you are attempting to restore does not contain the correct information".
So I am frustrated and have emailed twocanoes.com, the Winclone publisher and waiting for their answer.
    Working with Bootcamp
I'm trying to figure out the steps I need to reinstall Windows from scratch in an existing bootcamp partition. Do I need to start from scratch with Bootcamp, or can I reinstall Windows from inside Windows? If I do the latter, how do I prompt Bootcamp to reinstall the Apple drivers?
    Other Issues FYI
I'm having trouble locating the Windows 7 instal DVD I originally purchased. I do have the serial number. So I've downloaded a copy of Windows 7 from the  MyDigitalLife Windows7 Repository.
I have burned the iso image to a DVD. I've got 2 versions, one is the .iso file burned onto the DVD, the other are the contents of the .iso file burned to DVD. I assume to install Windows, it will want the one with the contents of the Windows installer burned to it? Any other issues I may be unaware of regarding this kind of Windows install?
Is there any advantage of reinstalling Windows from a USB Flash drive as compared to a DVD? Just curious.
Finally, for Activation, because this copy of Windows is going back into the same Bootcamp partition on the same hardware, will I have to reactivate Windows? If so, suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks!
    -Dave

I appreciate the help. Can you tell me what are the steps to tell Bootcamp to install drivers into a Windows install? Thanks!
Update: I looked at the Bootcamp Assistant instructions and now I understand your answer. Info here:
"Step 4: Install the Windows support software
After installing Windows, install Mac drivers and other support software for Windows. The
support software installs Boot Camp drivers to support your Mac hardware, including AirPort
devices, the built-in camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and the function
keys on an Apple keyboard. The software also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows
and the Apple Boot Camp system tray item.
You can download the support software by selecting the “Download the latest Windows support
software from Apple” option in Boot Camp Assistant. The support software must be copied to a USB flash drive formatted in MS_DOS FAT. If the installer does not start automatically, doubleclick the setup.exe file in the Bootcamp folder."
If you or anyone have any other tips, they would be appreciated. As this appears to happen with Windows quite frequently, and I've had to do it multiple times over the years, I'm not looking forward to it.

  • How to reinstall Windows XP against Bootcamp for a Macbook

I am a new switcher for Mac OS. My major work has always been completed in XP OS. but recently I suffered a frequent down for XP OS. What should I do to reinstall a XP with Bootcamp?
    1. My macbook was installed with old version of bootcamp, should I remove this older one and reinstall a new one?
    2. How to remove bootcamp from a Mac OS?
Better provide me a detailed guide to secure this reinstallment.THANKS EVERYONE.

If you launch Boot Camp Assistant, you will see that one of the choices on the first screen is to "Restore the startup disk to a single volume". Click on that and follow the directions. That will remove Boot Camp and Windows XP from your Mac.
You can then launch Boot Camp Assistant again to reinstall Windows.
If what you are saying is that you want to only update Bootcamp to the latest version (1.1.1) you do not need to remove your Windows partition and start over.
If you only want to update, go to this page and follow the instructions marked "Updating to Boot Camp 1.1.1 beta".

  • Windows XP crashed and I need to reinstall it (through Bootcamp)

Geek Squad wants to charge me 130, but if I could do it myself that would be great. When I try to go to Windows a black screen with white text pops up saying that there is a corrupted file and that I can run the repair disk to TRY to fix the problem (tried doing that, and so did my friend and it wouldn't work). Geek Squad said I would need to somehow do something through Bootcamp and try to reinstall Windows. How can I do this? Will I lose anything on my Mac side? I know I will lose everything on the Windows side.

You should post this in the Boot Camp forum, most people on the iMac forums don't work with Boot Camp or XP.

  • Windows 7 bootcamp show black screen with a small white bar

I just upgraded my iMac mid 2011 21.5" with a crucial m4 SSD. The SSD is plugged in the disk 1 DATA port and on the SSD power on the motherboard. I fully installed Windows 7 with all the driver and updates. My mac is upgraded with the lastest update. The crucial m4 firmware is 009. I installed no driver for the SSD.
The problem is that when I start my bootcamp it only show a black screen with a small white bar on the corner. I waited about 5 minutes before to close the computer manually. The only way my bootcamp work is when I put my Windows 7 DVD in the reader for the startup.

Sometimes windows installation will install a WDM driver for ati or nvidia. It causes the screen to go black altho ugh everything else is running in the background. I found that using an external monitor will allow you to see the screen so that you can install the lastest bootcamp drivers. After the drivers are installed the screen comes back.  I reinstalled windows 3 times and tried all other solutions including repairing the hard drive in disk utility.

  • Windows 7 bootcamp issue

I have a MacBook Pro with Windows 7 running on a BootCamp partition.  I only use Windows 7 lightly for military work, and the other day I tried to install a printer and it locked everything up.  Now nothing on Windows 7 works, the mouse, keyboard, etc.  I can't get anything done.  I have 4 years of IT experience as a IT Manager, but I'm new to Macs and Bootcamp, is there a way to restore or fix my Windows partition, or do I have to wipe everything out and reinstall Windows?

Yes I'm an IT manager without a backup.  Like I said the only time I use Windows is for doing military work.  The Army uses software for filling out forms and digitally signing that only works in Windows.  99.999999% of the time I'm on my OSX side.  I have only been in Windows 7 side 3 times since January, and everything is backuped on a thumb drive.

  • Can I reinstall Windows in Boot Camp without unpartitioning my hard drive?

    Hi!
I've had my iMac with Boot Camp for a while, and I'm the kind of person that likes to download lots of junk. On my Mac partition, I downloaded Parallels, and used it with my windows partition. Later that day, I found out that using Parallels with a Boot Camp partition can corrupt files, which is what happened. My Windows partition still works, but it's a little screwy.
So, I was wondering if I can reinstall Windows XP without unpartitioning my hard drive, and without effecting Mac OS X.
    Thanks~

Yes. It is quite straightforward - you boot into OS X, insert your Windows install disk, go to Applications (or is it Utilities?) open BootCamp - the Assistant opens. Then you ignore the partition options and just click on install Windows. BootCamp should be used for all things Windows.. ....I myself originally made the mistake of re-installing Windows one time while IN Windows (I didn't even think). I made a mess!
    Edit
My machine came with Tiger. I was sooooo impressed when I purchased Leopard that I could choose to do an erase/install of OS X without even touching the Windows side. Really nice - I still have that original Windows install untouched!

  • Is installing Windows via bootcamp bad for my hardrive? (It crashed)

    Hello,
I purchased my new Macbook Pro 13" in January of this year, and my hardrive recently completely crashed. I was lucky enough to have Apple pay for a new hd, but I really want to know what caused it. The only thing I can think of that makes any sort of sense is that installing Windows via bootcamp screwed up the hardrive somehow and caused it to fail from getting worked too much from always restarting into Windows / having too much of my hd dedicated to Windows (150 gb of my 750gb SATA hd). I dont know if any of this makes sense, or if I just got really unlucky and got a bad hd from the factory. I have never physically damaged my macbook (like dropping it or whatever) and have never stored it in extremely hot or cold temperatures. The copy of Windows I installed was legit and everything....so I am scared to reinstall windows in fear that my hd will fail again
So my question is this...... is there any way that the bootcamp partition could have cause my hd to fail? Is it safe to go ahead and install windows again?
    Thank you for you time.

I have never heard of bootcamp causing hard drive failure. I think it is more likely that you were unlucky and ended up with a bad drive. Something like 1 in 100,000 fail, that 1 has to land on someone. If you are worried about bootcamping again I would recommend Parallels or VMWare Fusion. They are both excellent virtualization applications and offer a soft cap on the windows partition size because it is a file kept inside of OSX instead of a physical partition. I have been running Parallels for 6 months with no problems.
    Best,
    Stuart-

I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP with Service Pack 3 on an '08 MacBook with OSX 10.7.2 and Bootcamp version 4.0.1.  My MacBook doesn't recognize that the Windows install disc in in the drive.  The disc and drive are both otherwise just fine.  Any thoughts?

Lion doesn't support any other Windows installation than Windows 7. http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629 You have to install Windows XP with Boot Camp 3.0 in Snow Leopard before you upgrade to Lion.
    Boot Camp
supports existing Boot Camp installations with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.  New Boot Camp installations require Windows 7 (sold separately).
