Hei Inge
Are you looking in the Library folder within your Home folder (your user area)? This is where all your mailboxes and messages are stored. That is, NOT the Library folder directly on your Hard Disk, but in your user area. Please post back details.

How to re-activate 'Mail' after complete successful Time machine re-installation except 'Mail' backup keeps getting stuck?

Trying to re-instal my email history the 'Mail Message Import' dialogue screen says: 'Mail needs to import your messages. This might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished'.
The problem is: after importing 5,000 messages it stops and the 'Time remaining' only keeps adding up to many hours (17 hours). There are almost 80,000 email messages in my Time machine backup.
How to get this working? I am even prepared to give up my email history if i can only get my 'Mail' application working again.

  • Can anybody help with problems with Mail & Backup, please?

Hi, yesterday, for some reason, a problem developed with Mail.
Without me changing anything, while it will send and receive e-mails through my Apple account, it has stopped downloading emails from my BT account, which previously worked fine.
It keeps trying to log on to collect them (the rotating gear wheel beside the account operates) but nothing downloads. It is not the BT account which is at fault, since my iPhone, which is synched to the computer, downloads them fine.
Also, while I had been regularly getting advice from Backup that my storage disk was full and it was deleting an old backup, today Backup has told me that the disc is full and the backup has failed.
I cannot see anything in Settings which could obviously account for these changes.
i am a pretty new Apple user (a conversion I cannot claim has been a great success so far, and I would be grateful for any help you can provide.
    Many thanks,
    Neil

Export the folders/mailboxes and put them in the other users Public folder or go to the hard drive level user and put them in the Shared folder. You may have to reset permissions using Get Info (command - I). The other user can them import them.

  • Mail backup retrieval how?

My computer hard drive crashed. I was able to back up the entire drive and am now in the process of recopying everything back. Is it possible to find all my email and restore it as it was before? Your help would be greatly appreciated. I had extensive folders holding all kinds of information (including software codes, etc, which I desperately need) that I would like to access. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Please confirm, your OS is 10.4.7. What mail program do you use, and what version.
The mailboxes are on your backup drive, the trick is to navigate to them. I'll try to help when you confirm the OS vers
ion and the mail program and version.

  • Mail Backup: On My Mac

Hi I was wondering if there is a way that I can save ON MY MAC section from my Mail? I'm using Lion OS.
    Thanks

What do you mean by "Save"?
    Try Mailbox->Export Mailbox
    Export mailboxes
You can export a mailbox to create a backup copy of it, so that later you can retrieve messages from the mailbox if you need to.
Select one or more mailboxes to export. To select mailboxes that are next to each other (contiguous) in the list, hold down Shift as you click the first and last mailbox. To select mailboxes that are not next to each other in the list, hold down Command as you click each mailbox.
Choose Mailbox > Export Mailbox, or choose Export Mailbox from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) at the bottom of the sidebar.
Choose a folder or create a new folder where you want to store the exported mailbox, and then click Choose.Mail exports the mailboxes as .mbox packages. If you previously exported a mailbox, Mail does not overwrite the existing .mbox file but appends a number to the filename of the new export to create a new version, such as My Mailbox 3.mbox.
If you need to recover messages, you can import an exported .mbox file as Apple Mail.

  • Mail backup possible with Time Machine?

I've done enough reading here to get that Time Machine does not back up the mail portions of the /var directory. As a matter of principle I configured mail services to use an alternate store location located at the root level of my server boot volume. Time Machine is backing that directory up, but just as it would be in the /var directory, some of the sub-directories are not accessible because of permissions being allowed only to _cyrus That makes it pretty difficult to check whether the contents of those folders are being backed up.
I'm just wondering if changing the permissions of those directories for read-only access for a specific user would allow Time Machine to read them and back them up properly, or if that might cause problems in other aspects with mail service in general??
    -Doug

    Doug
Seriously mate don't entertain it. All the Apple Trainers I've spoken to don't recommend using TimeMachine at all for backing up anything on OSX Server. I happen to think its fine if the Server is simply a File or Web Server or even presenting Shares as TimeMachine points for workstations. If OD and Mail are involved I would not entertain it. Even if you managed a back-up, the real issues will come when and if disaster strikes and you need to restore. There are far too many posts on here detailing the mayhem caused by restoring a mail or ldap database from a TimeMachine backup.
IMO any effective backup strategy should not involve fire-fighting a restore. However it's your server and only you will really know what's best for it.

  • Mail backup issues in Time Capsule in Snow Leopard and Lion

I've looked all over the support forums on the web and nothing is helping me get to where I need to go.
I have backed my MacBook Pro using an external HD and have the ability to go back to each one dating over 3 months, however, when I restored, my mail folders and accounts (accept my MobileMe), were gone.
I tried all the ideas of getting into my mail account and then backing up from there, but when I am in the mail.app, it does not allow me to go back any farther than today (essential no backup).
I am using POP accounts, and have tried it on both Lion and Snow Leopard to no luck.
Any ideas, help, anything!! Thank you!
    - Eric

Are you restoring from Lion to Snow Leopard?  That's unlikely to work.
Since this involves Lion, you're in the wrong forum.  Use the forum provided when you got Lion; discussing it outside of that forum is a violation of the NDA you agreed to.

  • Mail backup iCloud

    Hey,
On my macbook I have different folders under my Icloud account. For many years I have moved mail from my mail inbox to different folders in to the Icloud
for backup. When I know looked in to the Icloud account, I could only see mail stored there from 20121120... all mail before that has been deletet?
Can someone tell me were this mail has gone? How can I retrive this mails?
    //Thomas

    Who is your email provider?
If it is iCloud you can't move email from the client (Mail) to the server (iCloud) because it is already on both of them.
So explain what you did, including which email accounts are in use.

  • Mail backup on Mountain Lion clean install

I'm installing a new SSD in my Mac Pro and want to set it up as a clean install of ML so not from a previous TM Backup.
I only want copy the whole of mail - with all the mailboxes and filters intact and without having to set this up again.
Any help in how I do this would be really appreciate.
    Thanks in advance, Matt

This will be a lot easier if you make a secondary backup using something like Carbon Copy Cloner. (That's good practice anyway... relying on one single backup isn't all that safe overall. I've seen plenty of people who only discovered their one-and-only backup was corrupt once they needed it, or who did something wrong in the restore process and destroyed it.)
Then, when you're ready to restore Mail, you need the following folders from the backup:
    Users/yourusername/Library/Mail/
    Users/yourusername/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/
Move those folders from the backup to the same location on the new system. The difficulty will be that, in Mountain Lion, the user Library folder is invisible, so what will make your life easier is to run the following command in the Terminal before making your backup with Carbon Copy Cloner:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
(Terminal is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.)

  • Mail backup folders corrupted

I have been trying to restore my mail folders with Time Machine (total 10G or so). The actual restoration goes fine but the folders seem to have been corrupted in some way so when Mail is restarted it insists on re-importing all my mail. This process takes hours and invariably fails (Mail crashes out and on re-launch tries again to import and again fails after a couple of hours).
This seems to leave me having lost all mail for the last month (back to the last proper backup made with a normal backup utility), which is frankly pretty disastrous!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to recover the mail? I have re-restored several times both manually and with TM, and also overwritten the Mail prefs files. Is there any way to make TM restore the Mail folders properly so I just get back to the Mail status some hours ago, as Time Machine says it does?
I wonder if the corruption is because TM is trying to offer a single-message restore facility - I am not sure if I can turn this off so as to get a normal backup.
All help appreciated! I thought I was well-protected but I seem not to be!

Well in case it helps anyone there seems no way to get things back. Even a full system restore does not work - the (119,000) messages still need 'importing' and this still fails.
It is very frustrating that restoring a few (like the last month's) messages from within mail still fails - the messages can be seen and even read but not restored - TM eventually (an hour or so) freezes. This may be because the 'inbox' of a few hours ago shown in the TM window is not in fact this - it contains a massive 69,000 messages going back several years and takes 20m to load instead of only the last few months as it should.

  • Mail backup without attachments

    Hi
Without removing attachments from my primary mail folders, does anyone know a way of making a backup of my mail that would not include attachments?
My aim is to make a relatively concise backup of the contents of my mail that I can store online without taking up all my capacity.
    Grateful for any advice!!
    Thanks!

Apple's "Mail" app does not offer that flexibility at this point.

  • Time machine Mail backup size

    Hi everybody,
I don't understand why my Time Machine backups are around 1Go every time. Not every hour, but every 2 or 3 backups.
So my TM HD gets quickly full all the time.
I've used BackupLoupe, and I've realized that the problem comes from Mail.
It backs up around 750 Mo all the time.
Mail is set with an imap gmail account.
I've read the same issue here, but the post is archived :
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2205780?threadID=2205780
I've not read the size issue has been solved, so If someone can tell me how.
    Thanks a lot,

From the Mail menu bar, select
    Mail ▹ Preferences ▹ Accounts
Select the problem IMAP account, then the Advanced tab in its settings. From the menu labeled
Keep copies of messages for offline viewing
    select
Don't keep copies of any messages
If you're not sure which account is involved, take this step in each one.
Another option is to exclude the hidden folder that contains the messages from your backups. You can do that in the Time Machine preference pane.

  • Mail backups are interfering with my access

Mail is forever downloading supposedly new incoming messages (most recently to the tune of 360,000 messages!) Sometimes they show up in trash and sometimes they are not to be found. When I find them in trash (which I keep deleting to no effect) they appear to be backups made about twice a minute!  Even if I wanted to find a previous version, I couldn't wade through that many backups. This is ridiculous and interferes with Mail's job of sending and receiving actual mail and even with other internet access.
I do a lot of my message writing offline, if that makes any difference. I even tried Secure Delete once and it made no difference - but I was offline at the time. Secure Delete scares me as I have too often accidentally deleted unintended items.  Processor 1.7 GHz intel Core 15 (or is it iS?); Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; local internet quality usually very slow. Don't know what other information might help.
    Thanks, saltyrobn

I blew it! I closed rather than quit Mail (not even sure of the difference).  Found an Envelope file that was 3.2MB! Deleted them and went back to mail. One account seems to have been restored including 22 outbox messages from up to 2 years ago! Some of which I know did get out already. Others I don't know.
Another account shows an empty inbox with the sub boxes also empty.
I redid it, properly. Quit instead of closed Mail and deleted the 3.2 or thereabouts MB of envelope files. Started Mail. Eventually my second account was restored.
It is now showing incoming messages at 167353 and climbing. Checked trash. A whole bunch of backup copies yet again but nowhere near the 160000 is says are already in. At least not yet. While writing that the incoming message count has climbed to 169433.
