Rejected password with RoadRunner (RR)

Over the past few months, I've had an increasing number of password rejections from my RoadRunner internet provider using Apple Mail. Frustration is growing. My password is being entered correctly, but it immediately throws up a dialog box saying "The POP server xxxx rejected the password for user xxxx". I've verified the password is correct.
In fact, today I got in touch with the RoadRunner tech guys. They had me change my password, but still it's rejected. Immediately at that point, RoadRunner blamed Apple and told me to talk to them instead and that there's nothing they can do. Uhh, sure.
It seems to happen once every few days. If I restart Mail immediately, the problem is still present. However, if I shutdown Mail for an hour or so and THEN restart, it will immediately pop my mail and all is well for a while. What the heck is going on? Anyone else with this problem? Am I hitting my pop server so hard that it locks me out for a period of time? It IS set to check once a minute.
Thanks!

While I know this question will seem unrelated, I think it can be. With the setup for the SMTP, are you using Password Authentication or None? Check this on both Macs, please. I ask this because I know that Roadrunner traditionally uses no authentication on the SMTP, but rather permission to use the SMTP is based upon the IP of the modem they provide, and in many cases attempting to use PW authentication on the SMTP has failed for many people. But recently one of my daughters who at home is on RR visited with her little netbook computer, and when she attempted to reply to one of her emails while connected to my network, she could not. I had to go into her server settings and select the box to Use the same server info as on the Incoming. At home that had not been necessary. So apparently, in some areas at least, RR has provided a SMTP that will work in locations other than the home connection.
This could have some interaction with the Incoming, and might cause some random issue with server authentication -- just a thought, but if not related, perhaps Thomas or you can comment on whether RR has made recent changes to use of the SMTP and authentication?

  • TS3276 Mail rejected password to one of my 3 accounts with Gmail, all old.  Successfully entered the account from Google mail interface.  What's wrong?

I have had Mail for years.  Have new MacBook Pro, set my old 3 accounts with Gmail, used them successfully. Yesterday, Mail rejected password to one of my accounts and does not accept it repeatedly.  I entered this account from Gmail page, no problem, so my password is correct.  Went back to Mail, this particular account is rejected.  Checked all Mail preferences, all are the same as initially set.  What is wrong?

In both cases, the default address is right.  However, upon receiving the email, it says the wrong address.  Thus, when people reply to my emails, I do not get it in my apple email, I have to sign in under the other (wrong) email address.

Please can anyone help with the continuing password rejection problem with email on my imac.My Ipad and other systems work fine but despite reloading my password on imac it bounces back.Apple store has been visited and I have tried everything they suggest.

I use free Yahoo mail webMail access because folders I created in webmail access doesn't get set up in Apple Mail. While I was searching for post about password and keychain issues, I stumbled on several threads that complain about Mail folder issues, so I'm holding off on Apple Mail.
On the password and keychain issue that your post is all about.  I've been using login keychain to save and automatical fill my login screens for a year or so successfully, with Safari and Chrome. Automatic form fill also works for Facebook login. Unfortunately, about 4 to 6 months ago, automatic password form fill stopped working with Yahoo webmail, while still worked for GMail (Safari and Chrome). I tried deleting the password entry for my two Yahoo email accounts to start fresh, but neither Safari not Chrome will even ask me if I want to save the password. I was so frustrated that I eventually installed the keypassX 0.43 (password manager) that is quite primitive sompare to OS X's keychain (when it works). Probably no surprise to you yet.
The surprise, to me at least, is that, for whatever reason, password auto form-fill from keychain started working again for Yahoo webmail login on Safari about 5-7 days ago. Still doesn't work on Chrome!
Two tips I can share, at least with webmail access:
    1. Password is save only for one of my yahoo mail accounts. When I login in with my other yahoo account, I get no prompt to save the password, and form fill doesn't work when I try to log in a second time with my other Yahoo mail account.
    2. On inspection of my login keychain, I see a webform password item saved for my Yahoo account that works with keychain. The name of the password is: login.yahoo.com(MyAccountName1#). When I open the password item and look in the Access Control tab, I see Safari and Chome are listed as allowed to access this password item..
I also an "Internet password" item with a name of just login.yahoo.com. When I open the the password item, it looks just like the password item created for MyAccountName#1, but the MyAccountName#2 is listed in the Account field. Inside the Access Control tab, no apps are listed in access permission. I added Safari and Chrome to the lists of allowed app, saved the password item.
Now when I bring up the Yahoo login page(by bookmark) on Safari, form fill fills in MyAccountname#1 for name and the proper password and I can login in. When I change the name to MyAccountName#2, the correct password is retrieved and I can log in! Alas, it still doesn't work on Chrome.
BTW, I changed the password item type from "Internet password" to "Web Form password" and saw no difference! I also edited the name to be "login.yahoo.com (MyAccountName#2)" to look like the web form password item that works, but it has no effect either.
From my experimentation, here's my observation:
    1. A Web Form password item is created for the first account name(MyAccountName#1) for login.yahoo.com and typed as Web Form password. When I log in using MyAccountName#2, an Internet Password is created, but no applications are listed as allowed to access the password item, even when the password item was created after just logged in and logged out to yahoo with the account name and password for MyAccountName#2.
    2. Manually adding Safari as an app that is allowed to use the password item works. Doesn't work with Chrome!
The version of Safari I'm using is Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2). My installed version of Chrome is Version 21.0.1180.79 beta.

  • Passwords with an asterisk (*) aren't recognized?

I use "strong" web passwords with weird characters, and am finding that any password that uses an asterisk is rejected by the website when I type it into the iPhone. I wonder whether the same would happen with other shift-number characters.
If I change my password to include only letters, numbers, and non-shift "other" characters, it connects just fine.
Anyone else run into this? I would love to submit it as a bug but can't figure out how...

Hi, and thanks for your response! I'll try reinstalling Leopard.
My PowerMac is still very fast with Leopard, though the processors are having a noticeably harder time keeping up. Things get hung up more frequently than with Tiger, but not enough to really be a problem (I could certainly use more processing power for video encoding, but then again, who couldn't?). I also upgraded my MDD's video card, so I imagine the performance drop is all the more noticeable in machines that still use the original hardware. Regardless, my MDD handles Leopard much better than my G4 iBook, which went from flying with Tiger to crawling with Leopard.

  • Comcast POP Server Rejecting Password & Now Dysfunctional (Keychain?)

I'm starting a new thread because a related topic "POP server rejecting password" is marked answered, but for Charter, which solution will not work with Comcast. Comcast has advised that some problems are stemming from internal changes (commencing near the end of November 2007) mandated by the FCC to improve security. But, given that I can access the Comcast email account remotely via my Treo Smartphone (using Sprint), and via Comcast Webmail, makes me think that my Mac (OS 10.4.8) and/or Mail application may also be culpable.
I specifically am having a problem with a Comcast email POP server, but not two other POP inboxes hosted by another, unrelated ISP, also managed by Mail.
When I open Mail, the Comcast mailboxes (both inbox and sent) are grayed out with a ~ next to them--I've never seen a ~ before. The other two mailbox pairs (the non-Comcast ISP) work normally. Selecting Mail's Connection Doctor produces the results: "Connection and login to server succeeded" for the Comcast POP and "Connection to server succeeded, no login required" for the Comcast SMTP--no difference when compared with the results for the other, non-Comcast ISP mail accounts. This is notably different from posts in the other thread.
Historically, I'd occasionally (perhaps monthly or so) get the popup request "Enter Password for Account..." Comcast previously conveyed that such treatment is normal. I perhaps could have alleviated this by adding the response to the keychain, but never bothered. Problems began yesterday when typing in the correct password resulted in the same request, repeatedly without end.
Called Comcast tech support (three times now), verifying that the Mail application is set up OK. They acknowledged that they were experiencing some server outages, but that was unlikely the issue since I could access such via Comcast webmail. Of course, they referred me to Apple--my Mac "had to be the problem."
The other topic suggested, perhaps, that keychain was at fault. So, using the Keychain Access utility, deleted all items. I was motivated to do this anyway based on speculation last week by the Trash It scriptware developer that I may have keychain corruption, as regarded another, hopefully unrelated problem, now resolved, having to do with attempting to eliminate "localized.rsrc" files from the trash via the Terminal command "sudo rm -R ~/.Trash/*" returning the error "...(my formal user account name) is not in the sudors file."
Pulling my hair out on this one.

Comcast fixed the problem they were having with their server(s). No explanation, of course. Guess the problem was theirs entirely--no fault on our side.
Thanks David for your insight on what the (~) meant. Tried going online, but upon Mail checking, the affected mailbox immediately again went back offline--at least until Comcast fixed its end.
As regards the POP servers, yes I suspect there are intervening servers (PoP or otherwise) between users and the underlying database holding the email. All Comcast would acknowledge is that customer service representatives access the same customer email repository as do individual customers themselves, whether by POP or Webmail (Duh).

  • Mail and Exchange 5.5 Server (Round 2) "Rejected Passwords"

Mail and Exchange 5.5 Server (Round 2) "Rejected Passwords"
This one is huge, as you may have seen in my other replies to Mail and Exchange Server, I have had this working for over a year no issues.
Every once in a while I get a user that I setup and all of the sudden their password on the Exchange (5.5) Mail server (running IMAP, OS X Mail app)
    is REJECTED.
This is just no good, and still to me a Mystery.
    Has anyone seen this?
It seems there is some corruption happening on the Exchange Server, with the users accounts, preferences, settings.
The one way to fix it, (that I have seen) and the Windows server guys hate this, but I say too bad, completely move the afftected User's Exchnage e-mail account to another Exchanage NT mail server (they have 6 old NT 4, Exch Servers), once that is done, Mac OS X Mail app connects fine and ha no more issue with Rejecting passwords.
    Any feedback appreciated, thanks,
    [email protected]

I think I have the same problem without Exchange involved. I have seven different email accounts and two of them are acting like you describe: changes like deleting doesn't reflect on other clients (like mobile phone email client and webmail).
This also happens with read emails showing up unread so that if the email is been read and deleted same message can appear as new and when that message is deleted I can see two separate items of that same email message.
Also all marks of reply, forward or flagged are gone when the email show up as new again.
My service provider said that updates to Mail.app have previously made some big changes to way how it acts with email servers and thought that Mail is misbehaving with my two email systems.
I am using IMAP protocol with all accounts.
Thanks for any info and help!

  • Mail: outgoing and now incoming mail server rejects password

Hello all. Hope you can help with this one.
I was using Mail as normal yesterday. I use the same incoming mail server and SMTP server (my university's Exchange server). Then sending mail suddenly failed. The error message I get is:
The SMTP server “exch.wlv.ac.uk” rejected the password for user “(null)”
Enter your password again or cancel.
The settings are port 995 for outgoing mail, using SSL and requiring password authentication.
I've verified my settings and passwords with IT support. They say they haven't altered anything, and nor have I.
I've tried Connection Doctor: it says Mail connected with the exch. server without any problems. However, under Account Information, the server says (offline).
I've changed ports (to 25 and 587): no success.
I've deleted my password from Keychain and Mail plist and reentered it. No success.
    I've verified and repaired permissions.
I'm now not getting incoming mail either: the error message is
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Staff POP” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to host exch.wlv.ac.uk on port 25 failed.
I can send and receive using web-based OWA.
Is there anything else I can do, or is it a server problem?
    Thanks,
    Aidan

May be no help to you Aidan except comfort in numbers. Mail has started behaving erratically for me in the past week. My inbox and account mail has disappeared and my accounts keep being rejected by the webmail host similar to your problem; password rejected etc.  Then Mail closes abruptly telling me there's a problem and offering to send a report to Apple. Mail is version 4.5 and the iMac is 10.6.8. Help!

  • Mail keeps saying "server rejected password

    Hi
Does anyone know why with increasing frequency, when I click "get mail" for my pop account Mail has started to say "server has rejected password" and asks me to re enter the password. I do so putting the correct password in and it keeps coming back with the same message.
Then for no apparent reason it just stops doing that and allows messages to download from my pop account.

I got this problem resolved yesterday with remote assistance from my Bell server. Apparently, my password entry in my Mail Account had been corrupted or changed, so even entering the right password continued to be rejected.
We solved the problem by resetting my email password with my server, then entering the new password in my Account info in Mail.
By the way, my webmail with Bell worked fine, so there was nothing wrong with my settings. That pointed to password problems.
The question remains, though, Why did Mail mess up my password Account entry in the first place?
Hope this helps the rest of you struggling with this really annoying problem.

  • POP rejects password

Yesterday morning I stopped receiving mail, however, I can send. The POP rejects password then stalls and goes offline. I contacted the host and eveything on their end is fine. Others in my office with same domain are using mail with no problems. I attempted to install Thunderbird and connect. Sometimes TB will show I have messages and attempt to download but will time out. I also, in mail, deleted the account and set it up again, still no luck. I can receive mail to my .mac account, just not POP. I have been using webmail for the past few days. Any ideas?

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
BTW, are you really using Mac OS X 10.4.3, as your profile indicates? Is there a reason you haven't updated your system?

  • Can't connect with roadrunner

I have an IMac running OSX 10.9.3 and have 3 e-mail accounts with road runner. All 3 require password access and have the same server, ingoing and outgoing.  The very odd part is that always one account will be on line, sometimes I can connect 2 accounts, but never all three, it seems if I can get the third account to connect the 2nd account drops out.  I do not think the problem is with roadrunner as if I go directly to roadrunner and type in the correct password I connect without any problems.  Using the same passwords I used with roadrunner the accounts will not connect.  This started yesterday, but had been working flawlessly for many months.  I have repeatedly made sure the passwords for each account is correct and the setting for all accounts are correct.  Additionally I reac some of a previous discussion of the same topic but understood none of what was said.  Thanks in advance for any help recieved.  Please answer as you would to someone that knows absolutely nothing about computers.  Cheers Sam

  • WebDav rejects password on automatic login, but works on manual login

I had iCal working on my wedDav server pretty well (publish and subscrinign to it) in 10.3.8. I upgraded my OS to 10.4 and now webDav rejects password on automatic login, but works on manual login. This bug occurs when the iCal goes to publish, subscribing works just fine.
    G5

I have a similar problem. I have a dual 1.8 Tower at home and a PBG4 that I travel around with. I use .mac syncing to keep both the desktop and the PB up to date (syncing is set to "automatic" on both). I publish my personal appointments to a private server via webdav. Everything (server, user/pass, etc) store fine and publishing is fine...
then .mac syncs my two computers, as I instructed it to do, and after that, the published calendars fail to automatically update. I have to go in to "change location" and put my password for the webdav server BACK in.

If anyone knows what causes this and better yet, how to resolve this issue... I'd love to hear!

I changed my email address (apple id) and password on my pc, but now my ipad mini icloud is asking me for my  icloud password with the old email address and not accepting the old one or the new one..how do i change it / sync it?

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, and your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Did you create a NEW Apple ID or did you change the email address for your OLD Apple ID? This will affect how you update apps in the future.
Anyway, go to Settings/iTunes&App Stores, log out, then log in with the new ID.
