Relacing keyboard in MBP 15" - how easy?

Hi all, I am awaiting the arrival of my new MBP 15". I use both Russian and English. Buying MBP in Russia with the Russian keyboard carries an exorbitant surcharge, sometimes as high as $500 to $1,000, depending on the greed of Russian resellers. This is the reason I purchased it in the US from PowerMax (I live and work in the US).
I saw a replacement Russian keyboard for MBP 15" model sold at one US site ($140), which claims that it is an original Apple part. Is it difficult for an average user to replace a keyboard in the latest MBP 15"? I am not afraid of opening a computer and I did a lot if improvements myself to my old G5 (which was recently replaced with newest Mac Pro), including replacement of fans, hard drives, memory, optical drive, etc.
Or is it advisable to get keyboard replaced by an authorized Apple dealer of Apple store technician? Approximate cost?
Any hints would be very much appreciated.

Are you sure the keyboard you have seen is for the correct model, sercher? The one used in the Unibody MBPs is completely different from that in the early ones.
Replacing it usually involves a complete change of the entire upper body, and even used English upper cases for the unibody models usually sell for around $300. I gather that it is possible to change the keyboard once the upper body has been removed, but this adds some further complexity.
Even simply replacing the upper body is quite a tricky process by the looks of the instructions, and certainly harder than most work on G5's and the like. - see http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-2-53-G Hz-Mid-2009-Upper-Case/1587/1
Have you thought about simply using a cover? see http://www.kbcovers.com/servlet/Detail?no=84 for example.

Using vitual machine programs (VirtualBox, Parallels, VMWare Fusion) you can run both at the same time.
Load Windows under BootCamp.  Then load the VM software and select the existing BootCamp partition as the "virtualized space".
But ... BootCamp first, following Csound1's advice about backups.  And you will wantto boost RAM most likely because you need to allocate certain amount of system RAM to each "virtual machine", as well as leaving some for OSX.
    But ... BootCamp first.

  • External HD shut down when turning off MBP.  How?

    Hi there
I have an external HD connected via Firewire to my MBP. How can I achieve the following? :
    1. To have the external HD shut down automatically when I shut down the MBP. At the moment, if I shut down the MBP, the external HD stays on and I have to turn it off manually.
    2. To have the external HD go into sleep mode (if possible) automatically when I put the MBP into sleep mode.
    3. To have the external HD wake up from sleep mode or turn on whenever I do the same on the MBP.
    Thanks for your help,
    A.

Thank you both, Ned and hsaybasIII, I guess that's answered then. I was hoping to hear that there's some Utilities control, or Preferences pane that I wasn't aware of, and which enabled the feature I was talking about. Especially since I remember using it a long time ago on a much older Mac and an external HD, so I was assuming that these days that would be implemented too. Oh well... Thanks again.

  • I'm using apple's bluetooth keyboard and I need an easy way to switch between the text and numbers fields instead of tapping on the screen

I'm using apple's bluetooth keyboard and I need an easy way to switch between the text and numbers fields instead of tapping on the screen

    While not in edit mode:
    - if start typing numbers, then it enters number mode.
    - if start typing text, then it enters text mode.
Using the arrow keys exits edit mode. So this should work for you:
1 Type text into a cell, which enters text mode.
2 Press Return to move to the next cell.
3 Press right arrow key to exit edit mode.
4 Press left arrow key to get back to the cell.
5 Type a number, which enters number mode.
Another method that requires more planning ahead of time is to format the cells as text or number before starting the data entry. Then when you navigate to a cell while in edit mode, you will be in the appropriate mode (without having to exit edit mode).
This all works fine for me. Hopefullly it does for you also.

  • How easy is the buffalo linkstation to use with my mac?

i'm thinking of buying a buffalo terastation to add more capacity to my system. i would connect it to my router and then the mac would probably access it wirelessly, although i could wire it together. how easy is it to access something like a buffalo terastation from my mac? does anyone know how i do it? will i be able to access movie files and itunes libraries from there if i put them on the terastation. is it quick or will i find it really slow? do i access the files from a finder window just like i would with files on my mac harddrive?
i'm fairly new to macs and although i understand how network attached storage works in principle i've never tried it.
    thanks.

It should be a pretty straightforward hookup. It looks like it would connect through an SMB share, much like how you would connect to a PC on the same network. It is what I use to connect to my PC from my iMac through my Netgear router.
I have heard mixed things about NAS units. They are very expensive per gigabyte and often do not perform very well speed-wise. If you are looking to use this to store video, I think you will be dissappointed.
I have wanted to do something like this myself. I have looked into these as well as single NAS drives and even using a NAS device that allows several plain USB drives to be used as NAS. All of these options have tradeoffs and none are ideal.
One thing you want to look out for is that not all network drives are NAS. Some use proprietary drive formats that will not work with your Mac, like the Netgear SC101. Make sure that you get one that supports an open drive format - a Linux file system.
So far, the most promising possibility (for me) seems to be building a cheap PC, get some ATA drives on sale and throw Linux on it to use it as a server. The cost would be less, but support would be hard to come by
You can get 400GB drives on sale for $160-ish, add a case for $50, a low-end CPU and motherboard for $90-ish, 512MB RAM for $40, a CD drive for $30, and a KB/mouse for $30. If you have any of that stuff around - great.
I am at a point where I have "paralysis by analysis." I do not know what to do since there are so many tradeoffs.
I do have a lot of PC parts lying around, so that might be the way for me to go.
Sorry to prattle on, but I wanted to share some options.

  • How easy to sniff a public FTP/HTTP username and password?

    Hi IT Colleagues,
I understand that using plain FTP/HTTP , it is possible to sniff username and password using sniffer like wireshark.
However, I just to want know how easy to do it.
I know that in order to sniff , you should be in the same network or subnet as the website or ftp site.
    Regards,
    Jhun

It is trivially easy to sniff credentials out of FTP and HTTP due to the fact there is no encryption at play. One should also not simply consider the risks of someone running a sniffer on your local area network, or on the local area network of the remote
server, website or ftp site, but should consider the possibility for traffic to be sniffed along the way. The NSA is doing a rather good job of sniffing all of our traffic, credentials and all! Don't just worry about someone like the NSA though, a malicious
user on an ISP network, or an administrator of a proxy server could just as easily sniff the plain text traffic.

I need Internet Explorer for my MBP.  How can I get this?

You can't — at least not if you want to run it in the Mac OS. If you have Winidows installed on your Mac, then of course you can run the Windows version of IE, but the Mac version hasn't been updated since June 2003 and is unsupported by Microsoft. It's very insecure, it can't handle a lot of current web sites, and it may not run at all in recent OS X versions. It was lousy in 2003, and it can't have gotten any better while the world was passing it by.
If there's a web site you want to access that says it requires IE, complain to its webmaster about the benighted design of the site. No responsible web designer codes sites for just one browser any more. Every web site should be tested and should work well with a large variety of browsers — IE, Firefox and Chrome at a bare minimum — and every site owner should insist that their designer(s) adhere to that "best practice."

If you are talking about having Thai characters engraved on the physical keys,  you will need to contact some company which does that.  Or find a company that can send you a Thai keyboard to replace the one you have.

  • How easy it is travel abroad with the Verizon model of the new iPad?

On the specs listed on Apple's site for the new iPad, it lists GSM frequencies under Verizon model as well !!!
I am sure that one can't use AT&T SIM on the Verizon model, something must have been locked to prevent that.
But does anyone know how easy it is to pop in a foreign country 3G GSM micro-sim when travelling abroad into the new model Verizon iPad?
I have already ordered an AT&T model, but later realized that even the Verizon model shows GSM capabilities. If I could find conclusively about the foreign 3G GSM freedom on Verizon, I will definitely exchange my AT&T model for a Verizon one.

I don't think CDMA uses SIM card at all, hence no SIM slot in ipad 2 VZ model.
But LTE requires a SIM card, the VZ model of the ipad 3 is forced to have a SIM slot.
Here's an FAQ page from VZ site talking about LTE SIM:
    http://support.verizonwireless.com/information/4gsim.html
It's good (I am hoping truly that's the case) that Apple also allowed 3G GSM capability, this means one can pop out the VZ LTE micro-SIM and pop in any 3G micro-SIM.
I think there might be some lines of code from Apple to at least prevent an AT&T micro-SIM to work on a VZ ipad 3 just to prevent VZ from getting upset.
But other 3G micro-SIM's should work on VZ model. We can only find out on the 16th.
Here's one article that talks in details on this topic:

    Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone here had, like me created an application using stratus and then decided to switch to lccs?
How easy is it? Can you just change your connection endpoint and skipp all the rooms etc? or do you basically have to re-write a lot of your code to use the lccs framework?

For some reason, your Mac doesn't recognise that a keyboard is present, so it looks for a wireless keyboard. The question is, why doesn't your Mac recognise that a keyboard is attached?
First, you need to make sure you remove all peripherals, especially USB peripherals (the keyboard is on the USB bus). Then restart holding down the Shift key. This should boot in Safe mode. If the computer boots normally (not in safe mode) and the keyboard is still not working, try resetting the SMC
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964>
If that still doesn't fix the problem, then the keyboard (or its controller) is probably damaged and needs to be replaced.

    Many thanks for any advice.

You don't need conversion programs, iTunes can copy most of your content over to the iPad via the file sharing section, and some apps also support Dropbox, email attachments, transfer via your wifi network. There are a number of apps that you can get that support Microsoft office file (microsoft don't make an app versions of their software) e.g. from Apple there are Pages (word support), Numbers (excel) and Keynote (powerpoint), and from third-parties there are apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice HD
