Related Topics as list instead of button?

I am using RoboHelp 8.0.2 to produce HTML help.
Instead of having a Related Topics button, I would like a linked list of topics to appear (so the user doesn't have to click to see the list of topics, and if there is just one topic, isn't automatically taken to it).
Ideally it would look like this:
Related Topics
Topic A
Topic B
I understand I could do this manually but then I wouldn't have RoboHelp keeping track of these things for me.
Thank you,
Victoria

There really isn't anything RoboHelp would specifically do with a Related Topics control that would provide you any advantage over a list of links.
For example, you manually add the topics to the Control presently. If you update any of the topics in the control so they have a different File Name, RoboHelp does track and update the File Name for you. Then again, it will do the same thing if you have a list of links.
You may be under the impression that if you were to change the Topic Title that the Related Topics control would be amended to reflect the new title. But you would be wrong.

  • Iolo System Mechanic app failed and has caused FF not to act right - not loading buttons and some web pages to be a list instead of what the UI should look like.... I have reinstalled but still have the problem and not sure what to do

Basically certain web pages are not loading proper since app Iolo System Mechanic failed. I have reinstalled FF but still not loading right. Buttons are not showing and some pages are in a list instead of the GUI view.

I installed and uninstalled Firefox several times - finaly after I selected NOT to have Firefox as the default browser, the installation worked and pages loads correctly now! I made Firefox the default browser after the successful installation!

Am I not allowed to use "Related Topics" button/links over a

  • Related Topics

Hi, I need a list of related topics at the bottom of many of
my topics. I prefer to use a Related Topics button which when
clicked, displays a menu of the topics. My employer think it is
better to have a list of topics just added on to the end of the
topic. I think this looks messy but I can see that it is one click
    less for the user.
I would be really interested to know what other help authors
    do.

    Hi Authorgirl
Personally, I'm rather fond of the RelatedTopics controls.
However, I can easily see pros and cons with both approaches.
    Pros
    * Cleaner and sleeker look
    * User doesn't have to click the button or link to see how
    many topics are related
    Cons
    * To add or edit links requires extra work, because you have
    to edit the control
    * Some Microsoft patches may make the controls fail under
    certain circumstances
    * User doesn't know how many links are present until they
    click
I think there are more items for each list. These are just
what popped off the top of my decidedly bald head.

  • Importing Word doc into Previously Existing Project Corrupts Related Topics

    Hi,
I had a few extra topics that I documented in a Word document
and imported that document into an existing HTML Help project in
RoboHelp. After doing this, it used the CSS file called by the new
folder it added for those new topics (based on the name of the
imported word doc) and when I look at topics in WYSIWIG, the text
on them is Design_Time Con. (I used the text only style of related
topics). When I select the related topic button in WYSIWIG and view
the popup, the menu choice for properties is deactivated so I can't
even edit the topics in them. And, when I try to add a new related
topic, it looks the same "corrupted" way.
What am I going to do? Is there are project setting that is
pointing to the wrong directory? What can I do to save my related
topics. I have over 400 topics all with related topics buttons and
each has an average of 6-8 related topics listed.

P.S. I also tried creating a new project and importing the
htm files into it but it is doing the same thing.

  • Related topics functioning

I have had a few issues with the Related Topics buttons.
    1) Even if I choose the Topics found dialog, it doesn't display. The topics display only in the pop-up menus.
    2) There is a delay of at a least a second, and closer to 2-seconds, before the RTs display. Works OK when viewing the output on the hard drive, but very slow on the server.
I was also having issues with the topics popping up only at the top of the page, but there were suggestions here on editing the JS, and I was able to fix.
    Ideas on the other issues?

    Hello again
Okay, I had some time and decided to test this out. I notice that when generating WebHelp or FlashHelp, all you are able to get is a popup and not a dialog despite specifically choosing the dialog if your browser is Firefox. IE seems to allow presenting the dialog. Unsure about Google Chrome, I didn't test with it.
I tested by adding two controls with each one configured differently. WebHelp and FlashHelp flat refuse to do a dialog and instead only do the popup unless IE is the browser.
    I tested in versions X5, 7, 8 and 9.
Hope this helps a bit... Rick

  • On an iphone 4s, when I tap the phone number in my contacts list instead of calling the number it goes to a "Welcome to mail screen" how do I make it call the number instead?

On an iphone 4s, when I tap the phone number in my contacts list instead of calling the number it goes to a "Welcome to mail" screen with icloud, Microsoft exchange, Gmail, Yahoo, Aol & Windows Live Hotmail listed beneath. How do I make it call the number instead?

Never heard of that.  I suspect it thinks that's an email address and you're seeing that screen b/c you don't have an email account setup on your iPhone.
Assuming the number is valid, try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • Can related topics in FM be autoconverted into drop-downs in RH?

I remember four score and several millenia ago when I was
using WebWorks and FrameMaker, I was able to map a FrameMaker
paragraph style called RelatedTopics to a WebWorks style of the
same name, and in the Web output a drop-down related topics list
was created automatically. I haven't seen anything like that in
RoboHelp--it is probably possible in RoboHelp but I suspect I would
have to do that on the RoboHelp side, which would be another swift
kick to my single-sourcing process. Father forgive me for I have
whinged yet again about RH...Waiting for absolution people and
    answers of course!
    Best,
    Peter

I asked about this some time ago (to find the message, search
for "Related Topics"), and the answer seemed to be "No." So I got
Mif2Go and wrote a script to simulate the old Webworks behaviour.

  • Related Topics: Is it possible to change the order of topics?

    Hi,
Is it possible to change the order of Related Topics? I need
to change the order of topics (that is, I don't want the topics
    alphabeticized.)
    Thanks,
    FMnRH

    Hi FMnRH
Yes, you may change the order. If you have already inserted
the control, double-click it to edit it. Then click the Topics tab.
Click to select the topic you wish and below that, the area lists
the topic name. The field is labeled "Title". So you click in the
field and prefix the title with 1. or 2. to force the order you
    want.
If you don't wish to prefix, you will have to manually edit
the HTML code. But it is possible.
    Cheers... Rick

  • RH9 FlashHelp Related Topic popup menu behavior

Hi. Recently upgraded to RH9 from RH7. Output is FlashHelp. Use IE7.
Discovered that when clicking on Related Topics button, page scrolls up and popup menu appears at the top of the topic, rather than appearing next to the button as it used to. Is there any way to resolve this buggy behavior? Attempted to recreate the button, used the topics found dialog option, etc. Get the same result regardless of changes to Related Topics options.
This issue occurs when I generate the output and test locally, as well as when it's published to our server.
    Appreciate any suggestions.

    Try Tools > Update DHMTL...
It's a wild guess and beyond that, I have no other ideas. Sorry.

  • Explorer 7 just installed; Related Topics don't display

We just installed Internet Explorer 7 last week. And now NONE
of my Related Topic buttons display AT ALL!! Even if I enter a new
one, it just shows an empty box sort of thing. I'm assuming it's
due to the Internet Explorer installation. Has anyone else
encountered this? Or better yet, does anyone have a solution or
    workaround??

    See this

  • Generating Related Topics items from FM source

With our existing (non-RH) system, we can tag a set of
cross-references in FrameMaker to have them converted automatically
into a Related Topics list in the CHM. Is there an equivalent
    function in RoboHelp?

You can convert Cross references in FrameMaker to hyperlinks
in RoboHelp and also append a text in front of these hyperlinks.
Have you used a cross reference format definition which is unique
to Related Topics. If yes, when you map cross-reference formats and
select building blocks in the mapping dialog in RoboHelp, you can
also append a text "Related Topics -" just before the mapping. The
cross reference will appear as "Related Topics -
<$paratext>". If you have multiple cross-references listed
together, you may want this to appear only once for the first
hyperlink and use a comma separator. You can refine this by
creating two cross reference format definitions in FrameMaker, one
for first cross-reference and another for following ones. Small
modifications in this workflow should get the desired
    results.

  • Related Topics in Pure HTML Help

I need to deliver my Help project as WebHelp using Pure HTML.
Does this mean I lose my Related Topics?
If I don't lose them, what must I distribute to provide this
    capability?

It's quite easy to create a list in html, but how does a
writer produce the pretty little Related Topics box that the user
clicks on to get a list of topics. You know what I mean?
