Relationship between photo stream/camera roll/photo library and iPad/iPhone

Tying myself in knots trying to fathom all this and with iPhoto added to the mix.
I just seem to have photos all over the place with seemingly many duplications.
Would love to know the system a well-organised person has to keep all this sorted.
The most confusing thing is that the photo stream on my iPhone is different to the photo stream on my iPad and I had understood that this shouldn't be the case.
(would also have been glad to have known that having written this message once' it would be deleted when I added new products to the list at the bottom)

iCloud is a very simple and easy to use system.
PhotoStream being one of the features as you know.
On both iDevices, ensure that both are logged into the same iCloud account within Settings App.  Make sure PhotoStream is ON.
That literally is all there is too it to get images syncing between devices.
On your MacBook, you can also stream photos to computer - again, open the iCloud App in Sys Prefs, login with same AppleID.
You can also manually upload images to the PhotoStream (from Mac) - are you doing this also? Maybe getting confused here?

  • What's the difference between "photo stream", 'camera roll' and 'photos' ?

I can't download the new update because I don't have enough storage. I bought more storage but my camera roll is 6.2 GB. Photo stream is 323 MB. Can someone please explain the difference between photo stream, camera roll, and photos. Thanks.

    Photo Stream is a feature of iCloud;
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/photo-stream.html
The Camera Roll is an album on the iPad with any photos that you transfer from a camera or memory card using the Camera Connection Kit to the iPad or any screen shots that you take with the iPad or any photos that you take with the cameras on an iPad 2, as opposed to any albums that you have synced to the iPad from your computer using the iTunes app. The Camera Roll comes and goes as needed. If you have no photos that would go into the Camera Rol, it disappears, and returns when it is needed.
    iPhoto is an Apple photo app for the Mac computer. It is part of the iLife suite of Mac apps;

If you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup you can restore to that.

  • Managing Photo Stream & Camera Roll

How do you regularly avoid deleting the same bad photo twice, once in the monthly Photo Stream album in iPhoto and once in the device's Camera Roll?
I like that My Photo Stream automatically copies photos into iPhoto.  Problem is that any clean up that I do in iPhoto, (deleting bad shots) is not reflected in the Camera Roll.  So I remain with a Camera Roll that still has everything.  Next time I go to unavoidably plug my iPhone into iPhoto via USB to grab the videos, I have no easy way of figuring out which un-imported photos in the Camera Roll are there because I alredy deleted them in iPhoto or My Photo Stream mistakedly missed them (something that seems to happen often enough).
How are others managing this?  Is there any way to remove photos from my iPhone/Pad's Camera Roll automatically as soon as they've transfered to iPhoto via My Photo Stream?  Or maybe there"s a better way?  Thanks.

I don't import any photos from the camera roll any more, photo stream ensures I get all of them in iPhoto and I manaage them there from the events that they create. When I want to import video from the camera roll, that's all I import.

  • Photo Stream - Camera Roll

Why do some of the pix I take with my iPhone go to Photo Stream while others go to Camera Roll? Some pix go to one or the other, but not both. I don't know how to manage where my iPhone pix are saved. Please advise. Thanks.

Some other details that might be relevant...
Camera roll photos aren't uploaded to Photo Stream until the camera app is closed, you are connected to wi-fi, and your devices has at least 20% remaining battery power.  This may explain why some of your photos are delayed in uploading.  Also, only photos taken after Photo Stream is enabled are uploaded; earlier photos aren't.  Finally, photos uploaded to Photo Stream should appear in both your Camera Roll and your Photo Stream albums (that is, unless you delete them from one or the other, or you have exceeded the 1000 photo and/or 30 day limit for Photo Stream photos).

  • Moving photo from camera roll to library...how?

When you take a picture, it puts it in photos icon, Camera roll.
When you sync from iTunes, it puts the pics in photos icon, Photo Library.
    Questions
    1) How do you move a PIC from Camera Roll to Photo Library easily (I know you can go through iTunes/iPhoto to do it, but it is very cumbersome).
    2) How do you create additional "folders" to Photo Library, like one called Photo Library 2009, etc.
Assuming you can do this, how do you sync to these other "folders" besides Photo Library from iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    1) You don't. You should import the pics from the camera roll to your computer regularly. You can then then organize them and sync whatever you like to your iphone.
    2) You don't. You create and populate folders on your computer then sync to iphone.

  • Photo Stream & Camera Roll using double memory?

I have a 16gb new iPad.  I've noticed that since taking some home movies using the video camera (total of about 25 minutes) my available internal storage has dropped quite a bit along with my availble iCloud storage.  I also noticed that all photos and videos are duplicated between the Photo Steam and Camera Roll.  I'm not sure I've really figured out the difference between these two and whether I need them both. If I understand correctly, Photo Stream is there to work with iCloud to backup and also push stuff to other devices (but that feature has a 30day/1,000 photo limit)?  On the other hand, the Camera Roll is permanent (although it also backs up to iCloud, depending on your settings)?  I also understand that Photo Stream data doesn't eat into the free 5gb on iCloud, but Camera Roll does.
    So, my questions are:
    1. With respect to the internal storage on the iPad itself, am I losing twice as much memory for each photo/video that is in my Cameral Roll and also on the Photo Stream?
    2. It doesn't seem to make sense that I have iCloud backing up my Camera Roll (which eats iCloud storage) if the same stuff is backed up on Photo Stream (without using iCloud storage) - I assume the only reason to continue allowing it to back up the Camera Roll is that the Photo Stream backup has limits? In other words, if I don't backup the Camera Roll and my iPad craps out on me, then my iCloud restore won't inlcude any photos or videos taken more than 30 days ago?

Photos are included with the Photo Stream, not videos.
Photo Stream is temporary so if you have an iPhone and iPad, photos captured on one device will be available on the other device automatically and vice-versa. Your Photo Stream can also be accessed on your computer so you can add photos to the stream on your computer making the newly added photos available on each device without having to sync, and for saving photos in the Photo Stream locally on your computer's hard drive without needing to import the photos from the Camera Roll with your computer.
Photos in the Photo Stream as well as in the Camera Roll are taking up double the storage space.
Photo Stream is not a backup.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera.

  • Not clear about My Photo Stream, Camera Roll, transfer into iMac.

When I transfer into iMac using wi-fi /iCloud, some of the photos are missing in Camera Roll (iPad) and iPhoto (iMac), usually the photos I want to keep, use and post.
They are there in Photo stream still. To get them I email them on or send to Facebook. Why?

  • Photo stream, camera roll not syncing

Pictures I'm taking in my camera roll aren't showing in the photo stream on my phone in a very timely manner.  I have iCloud set up properly in both my MBP and iPhone, and I'd like to get a photo to my Photo Stream so I can use it on my MBP.

    Hello Meridarida,
The following troubleshooting steps can help get your Photo Stream working.
From the Home screen, tap Settings > Wi-Fi. Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on and your device is connected to a wireless network. If necessary, troubleshoot your Internet connection on your iOS device.
From your Home screen, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos (Photo Stream on a device using iOS 6) and make sure that My Photo Stream is turned on.
Ensure that the Camera app is closed on the device that took the photo. Photos will not upload from an iOS device to My Photo Stream until the Camera app is closed.
Ensure that your iOS device has not fallen below 20% battery power. To preserve battery life, Photo Stream downloading and uploading are disabled when the battery reaches this threshold. Downloading and uploading will resume once you charge your device and the battery charge is greater than 20%.

  • How can I import photos from photo stream to windows photo gallery? These photos are not on the camera roll on my iPad but are from another iPad on the same iCloud account.

I work at a Learning Center that has 12 iPads on the same iTunes and iCloud account.  Each classroom uses an iPad assigned to their room to take photos.  Each of these photos then shows up in the Photo Stream in all 11 of the other iPads.  I have no trouble importing photos that are in the Camera Roll of any individual iPad, but I have not been able to import photos from the Photo Stream if the picture was not taken on the specific iPad I am using.  It is not feasible for me to collect all 12 iPads everyday to import everyones photos, so how can I use one "master" iPad that will let me import photos from the Photo Stream since it has all the photos that everyone has taken?

You downloaded an iCloud backup to your PC?  I assume you mean you downloaded your photo stream to your PC.  What you may not know is that photo stream only keeps your photos for 30 days.  After that, they are deleted from photo stream but not from any device that already has them (such as your phone).  When you enabled photo stream on your PC you only had access to photos from the last 30 days since the others are no longer there, even though they remain on your phone.
To transfer these to your computer at this point you have two options:
Save them to the camera roll on your phone (by opening the my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll.  (You can only import photos to your computer from the Camera Roll album.)  Then import them to your computer as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083; or
Use an app like PhotoSync, which can wirelessly transfer photos from any album between your devices/computers, including the my photo stream album.
In the future, always import your photos from your camera roll to your computer via USB before deleting them.  Don't rely on photo stream or your iCloud backup to save your photos.

  • How to copy photo from camera roll to created photo album or to photo library

how to copy photo from camera roll to created photo album or to photo library

I have been trying to figure out a work aroundof this issue too.  It defeats the purpose of photo stream in my eyes.
You can copy a picture from your photo stream to your camera roll and then crop, etc.  But you can't then file that picture into a folder of your choice!?!?!?!  If I have to file the picture on my computer and then resync to do it then photo stream is mostly pointless!!!

I Need more room on my phone. I have a lot of photos and I have photo stream on. if I delete all my photos in camera roll, will I still be able to keep the photos in photo stream? My phone is not backed up to a computer, and I don't want to risk losing the photos.

  • How can I put my icloud photos to camera roll or photo stream?

I got a nee iphone, i backed up everything and restored it into mu new iphone, but the pictures didn't restore so i did it manually but now on my phone i got different albums icloud photo stream and camera roll. How can i put the icloud picture into camera roll or photo stream. Any ideas?? On my old iphone ive deleted everything.

    Hello Ozzie94,
Thanks for the additional information. The camera roll is designed for photos taken on your device, or saved images from Mail and other applications. Photos synced from a computer are organized into their own album(s):
View photos and videos - iPhone
    http://help.apple.com/iphone/7/#/iph3d267610
    - Camera Roll—photos and videos you took on iPhone, or saved from an email, text message, webpage, or screenshot
    - Shared photos and videos—Photos and videos that you’ve shared with iCloud Photo Sharing or that others have shared with you (see iCloud Photo Sharing)
    - Photos and videos synced from your computer (see Sync with iTunes)

  • With icloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from camera roll. I run an older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. Can I transfer pics from i stream to camera roll to allow a non-icloud back up to my PPC? Precious photos are close to 30 day cut-off

With i cloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from Camera Roll to make space knowing I would have them backed up on icloud via Photo Stream. I now find that my older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. I have an ipad3 too, which of course does. I want to copy photos from Photo Stream back to Camera Roll on the phone so that I can back up "old school" to iphoto on my ancient mac. The controls seem to suggest that as an option but when I select multiple photos in Photo Stream and select "Save to Camera Roll" the photos do not appear on Camera Roll as expected. I am running close to the 30 day limit and do not want to lose hundreds of precious photos (or have to email them to myself individually). Can the ipad3 help at all? Any ideas good people? Dan

If only it were that easy Winston. I connect with a USB cable, iphoto opens and I can only see the photos in Camera Roll, not Photo Stream. There does not seem to be a way of aceessing other files in the phone from iphoto and, as in my initial message, I can not transfer the photos to Camera Roll on the phone. My iphone and ipad software is up to date, but my iphoto is '08 version 7.1.5 with my mac running 10.5.8 which is the best I can do on the PPC without messing everything up.  I dont have the dough for a new mac or I would have gone for that option...am I stuck?
