Relay Outgoing Mail Through Host Not Updating

We relay our mail through an external company and I have added the entry to Relay Outgoing Mail Through Host field and enabled the tick box. What ever I do I cannot get these changes to take affect. I have tried modifying the main.cf and enabled the relay option without any joy. After modifying these I performed a full restart but it still hasn't taken affect.
This has been working up to now but after a power cut stopped for some reason.
We are running Mac OS X Server 10.4.8.
Thanks
Ross

I'd noticed a small glitch with the GUI during earlier testing. Might not clear things for you but worth trying...
Set it with the Relay Outgoing Mail ticked and relay server entered - click Save.
Wait for whirling update thingy to stop.
Delete the relay server name then tab out of field (field fills with greyed out "relay.example.com"), only then untick the option - Save.
Wait for whirling update thingy to stop.
Tick the option, fill in the relay server - Save.
If no change, people will probably need the unedited output from "postconf -n" and an example mail.log entry showing an outgoing message leaving the server.

  • Relaying Outgoing Mail Doesn't seem to work

    Hi,
I am a subscriber to Comcast ): and because many mail servers reject my mail from a non-static IP address, I use the option under Server Admin - Mail called "Relay outgoing mail through host: smtp.comcast.net
However this doesn't seem to help. In fact looking at the header of a message I sent from my server to a gmail account, it shows the IPs as my personal ones:

How can I get this working so all server like AOL accept my mail?

    #relayhost = $mydomain
    #relayhost = [gateway.my.domain]

    then i did this:
    empco:~ james$ grep /etc/postfix/main.cf relayhost
grep: relayhost: No such file or directory
    Couple of things...
    1. Sorry, I got the grep command wrong way round! It should be...
    grep relayhost /etc/postfix/main.cf
All it does is show the lines in the file which contains "relayhost" - easier than listing the whole file.
    2. The GUI normally adds the options at the end of the file - so if grep lists another 'blank' relayhost, remark out your old one and edit the entry at the end. (just in case an existing blank entry at the end is overwriting your edited one).
    3. You can actually edit main.cf whilst the mail services are running. Just execute the reload command in Terminal afterwards...
    sudo postfix reload
The sudo prefix runs the command as root, so it will ask for the root (admin) password.
Any changes made like this should automatically show up in the Server Admin GUI. Click the 'refresh' button.
I've confirmed the above works on my test system, so here's hoping!

  • My mail messages have not updated since Sunday and Safari is not opening--any suggestions?

On my iPad 2, my mail messages have not updated for 2 days and Safari won't open.

TThanks Meg-when I got through to Apple tech support, that's exactly what they had me do, but It still had to go further. In Settings I hit Delete Account (very unnerving), watched my messages disappear, then hit Add Account, re-entered my account info, and everything came back, including updating my messages. Success! Safari started too.
    Thanks!

  • Outgoing mail through iCloud

When I look at my Preferences in Apple Mail, I do not have iCloud listed as a server
therefore I cannot sent any outgoing mail through the iCloud servers.  What do I need to change so that iCloud is listed as an outgoing server?
    Thank you.

Yes they are both from my MacPro.  I just clicked on the "+" and obtained the second screen.  As far as I know both of my computers are on iCloud.  At least when I change the Address Book or my Safari Bookmarks on my MacPro, they are changed on the MacBook.
These are my system preferences on the MacPro
When I click on iCloud, this is what I get:
So I assume that the MacPro is on iCloud, unless you tell me otherwise.

You're looking in the wrong place. You're in the System Preferences, and you need to be in the Safari preferences, if that's the web browser you're using. You find these preferences under the Safari application menu, which will be under the "Safari" name just to the right of the Apple menu.

  • SMTP Outgoing Mail Server does not use password so I can not send mail..

    Hi All
Can anyone help me with this?
My POP email accounts on Hosting.365.ie do not use a password to authenticate outgoing mail. They rely on a prior authenticated download to enable the outgoing mail server.
On my MacBook Pro there is an option in the SMTP server settings under authentication for "none' and all my accounts work perfectly on the MacBook.
However my iPhone4 (brand new) and iPad (both up to date) there is no option under the SMTP server settings for "none". I think this is the root of the problem. Has anyone else come across this or is there a workaround?
Many thanks if anyone has any insights.
    Peter

Yeah, I don't know why the difference. Interestingly for me, the iOS version in iOS4.2 is "better" than the OSX version of Mail because now I can have more than one Exchange account.
I am sympathetic with your need to separate your lives. I have a client that accidentally got one of my alternate email addresses and cannot/will not update his address book with the "correct" address, despite my requesting several times over the course of a year. In any case, I don't think there is any way around this other than completely changing your email address. (If not a second Gmail, then Yahoo, Hotmail or other email provider.)
The only time I've ever seen a "no password" SMTP server was as I previously said, it used a "network authentication" method. Many, many moons ago, SMTP servers often didn't have password authentication so would often be used for spam relaying. Before mobile users, "network authentication" by ISPs was fine since they could figure out which user was spamming since they could trace the IP addr, MAC addr, etc back through the physical link to the user. But with mobile users who change networks constantly, the general trend was to password authentication, even for wired ISPs since their users would want to have access to send mail while away from home. (e.g.: you're a RoadRunner customer, but want to send mail while using your laptop on vacation in Italy.) This "prior authenticated download" I've never heard of anyone else doing.

  • IPad smtp outgoing mail server choices not shown.

I use one mail Gmail account to where all my other accounts forward their mail. This makes it simple for me to organize 10 different accounts.
In iPad Mail settings I've setup my main Gmail account with 10 other smtp outgoing servers but when I write an email I don't have the option to select which smtp server is used. In Apple Mail (Mac OS) this system works fine as they have the option to select whatever smtp servers are setup.
What is the point of having the option in the iPad to set multiple outgoing servers if you can not select which ones are used before sending?
I know I could setup various POP/IMAP accounts for each smtp I prefer to use but why make it so complicated and waste space and bandwith downloading duplicate messages?
Has anyone found a solution to this or am I missing something obvious?

  • SMTP outgoing mail through 3rd party servers

Apple Mac Mail - used to be fine sending email via a different SMTP server by setting up the SMTP details.
This seems to have stopped working and I am told by the service provider that BT must be doing something "strange" stopping my connection via SMTP to the mail servers I want to use.
Suggested that maybe the port was being blocked. Mail is trying 25, 465, 587 ports.
    Any ideas

LOve it to be something simple I did move to a new machine and latest OSX but I have switched the old one on and that fails too when it just worked for years.
Think I have a work round by using mail.btinternet.com as the outgoing server for all account but bemused as to why I should have had to do that.
Spent two hours on the phone today with BT. They escaleted the problem to a specialist support desk, which we then had to agree to paying a £30 charge if they were able to fix the problem as they say that it is a problem with mac mail. (Which it isn't because it works fine using a different broadband connection, and we have three laptops in the house all with same problem, using outlook as well as mail).
All three laptops have been working with out fault for the last four years and just before christmas they all stopped being able to send emails using hotmail. Obviously BT have changed something somewhere along the line.
The Specialist just changed our outgoing mail server to use BTs instead. (I have been using a different SMTP server anyway as a temporary fix since christmas) Whilst we are able to send emails, we are still unable to connect to hotmails SMTP server. Still had to pay the £30 though. As far as they are concerned that still counts as a fix. Another "solution" they gave me was to change the DNS address in system preferences- Not Ideal as everytime you connect your laptop to a new network you will have to reset them.An absolute joke.
Their direct number is 08000 321 118 if you need them to talk you through it. Best to have your bank card to hand.

  • Trying to add my thunderbird work email account to my new iphone, how do I find my "incoming mail server" and "outgoing mail server" host names?

Got a new Iphone 6 and I need to add my work thunderbird email account onto the phone. It is asking me for the host name of my incoming and outgoing mail server and I have no idea what this means- please help!

First off there is no such thing as a Thunderbird email account. Email providers issue email accounts and Thunderbird is email client software and not a provider.
You can look at the server settings in Thunderbird to see the settings it is using or you could get a list from your provider.
In Thunderbird go to the menu bar and select Tools-Account Settings-Server Settings to see the Inbound settings and Tools-Server Settings-Outbging Server(SMTP) for Outbound settings.
No menu bar with Tools showing? Press the alt key.

  • New E-mail Badge number not updated with new mail in folders (iPhone 4S)

I setup my exchange e-mail to push certain folders as well as my inbox but only my inbox mail will update the badge number.  If I get mail in a folder the phone just vibrates and shows the notification but the badge is not updated. Seems kind of pointless to have the mail pushed if the badge isn't updated as well. Is there a way to change this or a reason why it is not updating? And yes I have all the options to allow the badge to be shown, also show in notification center, show in lock screen, etc.  It was working with 7.0.3, but after I updated it, I realized it stopped working. Any ideas?

So i pretty much got ticked at my iphone. Not only was my "sent folder" not updating, the new 2.0 was crashing and hanging all my applications. e-mail photos wont send, got error messesges , at least every application crashed at some point in the last week, even after i did a restore and back-up. SO pretty much i restored to factory out of the box settings and just started as a "new iphone".
as for the whole "sent folder" not updating. I changed the setting to download "Last 200" messeges. Then i kept updating until all 1,000 messeges were downloaded. After that point my iphone would update whenever i sent new messeges. But it would take forever cause it was checking against a 1,000 e-mails for new ones.... SO i give up, i just dumped all my "sent e-mails" to a new folder called "sent archives" ( u can call it whatever u want). I think this is the easiest fix for now.
if i get any more issues.. i'm just gonna go restore my phone back to the software rev before 2.0 came out....

  • Mail: "outgoing mail server (smtp)" not being saved

In Mail settings I have a default "outgoing mail server (smtp)" selected, but when I go to send mail, it changes to 'gmail'
How can I get it to work the way it's supposed to.
It's worked correctly for ever, but exhibited this new behavior recently.

I think I have the same problem without Exchange involved. I have seven different email accounts and two of them are acting like you describe: changes like deleting doesn't reflect on other clients (like mobile phone email client and webmail).
This also happens with read emails showing up unread so that if the email is been read and deleted same message can appear as new and when that message is deleted I can see two separate items of that same email message.
Also all marks of reply, forward or flagged are gone when the email show up as new again.
My service provider said that updates to Mail.app have previously made some big changes to way how it acts with email servers and thought that Mail is misbehaving with my two email systems.
I am using IMAP protocol with all accounts.
Thanks for any info and help!

  • ICloud Mail file is not updating after many hours, many new attempts

I installed Lion OS on my MacBook Pro (2010) and moved from mobileme to iCloud.  When I open my Mail program, it has said it needs to update my Mail files (of course), and I told it to do so.  After letting it sit there literally for 8 hours, power supply plugged in, the bar showing progress of the file update goes only to the 25% finished mark and then just sits there!  I have cancelled that and started over several times and left it updating for 3 hours or more, several more times.
I realize that my file is big, but if it were too big or choking and freezing, it would show "Not Responding" if I tell it to Force Quit.  So far this mail file update process has NOT made Mail show as "not responding" upon Force Quit.
I have set my power supply Energy Saver settings in System Preferences to "never" shut down (only for this time period as I migrate to iHell) and I've told it not to shut down the hard disk nor to sleep.
The Progress/Status bar just keeps humming along as if it is working on the mail file update....but never moves past about 25% complete.
    Help!!!

Here is what I've been seeing for HOURS at a time...never going past this 25% completed mark:
