Release version of program crashes

Question

I have a multithreaded program that runs fine in the debugger.  When I run the release version of the program, however, it crashes.  The offending code is the following:

The function gui_proc is running in its own thread.  The variable gui_run is set true by another thread when a "RUN" button is pressed on a GUI panel.  The call to gui_run_main is not successful, as it doesn't appear that even the first statement in this function is executed.
Also, when I try to run the program after the crash, I have to restart the Parker motion controller I am communicating with via Ethernet (although I can successfully ping its IP address at this point).  I've attached the error message from the Event Viewer, if that helps.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I have been out of the office for a few days. 
I have attached the text of the gui_run_main function for your perusal.  When the user presses the "RUN" button on the user interface, gui_run is set true and gui_run_main is called.  The thread stays in gui_run_main until the number of samples to be processed (selected by the user) is complete.  gui_run is then set to false at the end of this routine and gui_proc returns to its "sleep" state, waiting for the next set of samples to be run.
As far as what else might be going on at this time, I will have to do some more digging.  This is code I inherited from a student who was working on this project, so my knowledge about program details is somewhat limited.
