Relentless nagging and misinformation about updating Firefox

Hello. This is a general letter to Mozilla.
I've been a faithful supporter of Mozilla products for a very long time now, but as of late, with Firefox and Thunderbird trying to force me to buy a new Mac Intel computer I neither want, need nor can afford, I'm done with you guys! Your behaviour as of late has been total crap! Up til a couple of days ago, it was only Farcebook that was whining about Flash plugins - even though I could go to any Youtube website or any other site that had videos and play them without a problem. But now Firefox itself seems to need to all of a sudden constantly crab that my plugins need updating - get over it. It ain't gonna happen.
So you no longer support PPC Macs or Tiger (OS 10.4.11) anymore - great. We get it. Now piss off and stop bugging us about it. I don't need a bloody yellow bar stating the obvious all the time about my plugins needing updating. Obviously anyone with even a bit of a brain would take care of such a thing if they could - as in, a plugin compatible with their system being available? Not only that, but Windoze XP still gets support? But Mac users who don't like the bloated crap of Leopard, or want an Intel Mac get shut out? Is Mozilla going to buy us all new Macs so we can minimize your inefficiency in the design department? I doubt it. Just because you guys don't want to do your job designing competent and inclusive software anymore, you really think that you are going to bully us all into buying new computers? Not!! What's going to happen is that we are just going to leave your asses in the dust where they now belong and go back to Safari and Mail, the built-in internet and mail Mac software clients. And trust me when I say I'm not alone in this. I advise about sixty people about Macs and Mac software (and they tell their friends what I suggest, and their friends tell their friends, and...), and guess what I'm going to be telling them from now on? Hint: It will no longer be to use your products. Even people who do have Intel Macs running Snow Leopard running the latest updates are complaining about Firefox pretty regularly these days - I'm constantly reading posts on places like Facebook from people asking for suggestions for alternate browsers. I've always recommended Mozilla products over the Mac internet clients because I liked the control over cookies and other security areas over those in the Mac ones - even though Firefox is a recognized memory hog, an annoying nit-picker and not compatible with with some important websites for things like home networking setups for companies like Bell - but you know what? I'll get over it. I've already started switching over myself and friends.
I also really despise the misinformed, scare tactics you use in your notifications about why the plugins need to be updated. For example... "This plugin version has a security vulnerability that websites can exploit and potentially harm your computer. It is recommended that you update this plugin or if an update is not available, disable it." Since bloody when? Do you even know anything about the software platforms you are creating software for? I've been using Macs since the early nineties, and guess what? They aren't susceptible to exploitation by websites as you insinuate! Unless you are running dual platforms in Snow Leopard (Windows and Apple), you still are not susceptible to viruses and spyware. I even test suspicious links now and then with specially created accounts for just that reason - you know, the ones that cause Windows users to get hacked into, and they can't get into these accounts. And I'm pretty sure you bloody well know that since the Apple Software update will automatically update things like Quicktime and Java with the latest versions applicable to their OS's, we really don't need the reminders, I'm also pretty sure you must know that both OS 10.6.xx and 10.7.xx are only compatible with Intel Macs, so stop the misinformation. I haven't
Sheesh! One would think you guys getting a cut for every new Intel Mac you fear-monger into buying. Or is Facebook your new Daddy now?
Bye bye.

The Flash update was launched to help keep users on all OS's, from Windows to Mac to Linux up to date. Unfortunately, there are users, such as Mac 10.4, that Adobe has dropped support for and will not release an updated version of the Flash Plugin. The reason 10.4 has been dropped from support by both Adobe and Mozilla is it was released in 2005, and it hasn't been updated since November 2007 (with 10.4.11). Mozilla and Adobe have both supported 10.4 further than Apple itself has. Windows XP still gets support (BTW, it needs SP2 or later with the release of Firefox 13) because Microsoft has committed to provide security updates until at least 2014.
Also, Macs are not invulnerable to Viruses, hacks, etc. The recent Flash back virus is one example: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/04/mac-trojan-exploits-unpatched-java-vulnerability-no-password-needed/, but there are plenty others. There is no technical reason to make macs more secure, it is just not as many viruses have been written for Macs, yet. It also should be noted, the Flash back virus is because of a Java vulnerability that had been patched for months, yet Apple hadn't pushed an update for it until it was too late.
To quote tenfourfox (a community made version of Firefox 10 for PPC macs) "No major plugin is being maintained for Power Macs any more: Flash stopped updates with Flash 10.1.102.64 in November 2010, and QuickTime 7 for the PowerPC was decommissioned with the release of QuickTime 7.7 and OS X Lion in August 2011. (Tiger users have not had an update since QT 7.6.4 in September 2009.) " http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported.

How can I move my contact list to new ID account?
And should I update my iOS system ?

Hello Godde
Lets start with checking out the articles below for setting up Family Sharing and more information about Apple ID’s. I will say that you will not be able to transfer any purchases to a different Apple ID, but you can rename the Apple ID. If you want to use Family Sharing, then you will need to just create a new iCloud account and then follow the steps in the second article to start sharing content between you to.

• What is the Firefox start page looking for when it tells me I'm not using the most current version and need to update Firefox? The check for updates button says my version is up to date, but the start page disagrees. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

Okay: My start page is the one Google provides: http://www.google.ca/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official and frequently it has a note underneath the search box that "You're not on the latest version of Firefox. Upgrade today to get the best of the Web!" But when I check for updates on the About Firefox window, it says my Firefox is up to date. So what is the start page looking for? Is there some setting I need to adjust? Or is this a Google marketing ploy to get me to switch to Chrome?

I tentatively think I have the solution; this is for when the session id value 'thing', in about:config, referred to in other answers is already on the default/rest state.
I am assuming, I don't what to imply certainty in-case there is a value wrong in our browsers, that the problem stems from the fact that our homepage is no longer the default for Firefox.
So, go to 'Options'>'General' and delete the homepage. This will reset it to the new address, which is 'about:home'.
I hope this helps some people.

• Some tabs and click-on headings are not working. They worked yesterday, and other than updating Firefox AFTER the problems, I've made no changes. Example: headings in Facebook; headings in my library website.

Some of the browser tabs and headers that are "clickable" are noe working. I click on them, and nothing happens. Part of Facebook works, but the headers do not. My library site headers, which has tabs for "Search" and "Account" as examples, do not work. Up till late yesterday, there were no problems. I did re-install Firefox this morning, and it made no difference.

• I received an email to update Firefox and when trying to upload my McAfee security said it was a trojan and stopped upload

I received an email saying to use the link to update Firefox, on doing this my McAfee security said it was a trojan and stopped the upload. I deleted the email but I have just received another on. Is ther an email address I can send it to so you can check it out.

Mozilla doesn't send email about updating Firefox from a link in the email. Someone is trying to induce you to install Malware or a virus on your PC under the guise of a Firefox update.

Please check to make sure you're using the current version of Firefox by going to the Help menu and selecting "About Mozilla Firefox". The current version is 3.6.3 (as of this writing), if you're using an older version, please download the current version from the Firefox website. If you are using 3.6.3, try visiting the Adobe download pages for Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash directly, note that you will probably have to agree to install the Adobe Download Manager (Adobe DLM) and agree to several security prompts in the bar at the top of the page before the plugins can install. Here are direct links to the download pages:

• How to disable nag screens about updating to Firefox 24

I would like to know how to disable the endless nag screens inviting me to update to Firefox 24.
I do not want Firefox 24 because I tried it for two weeks and it was repeatedly crashing - several times in each day - or simply freezing. I cannot work this way and so I have downgraded to a previous version of Firefox and I have not had a single problem in a whole month.
Please be aware that I do not allow Norton products on my computer so that is not an issue.
I keep a very clean computer - scanning EVERY night before shutdown with CCleaner and JetClean with Avast running permanently in the background. I also scan weekly with Superantispyware.

Note that using any version older than 24 has security risks, I would update and then try to post crash reports using the instructions below.
First update Firefox
* Update Firefox to the latest version
Then once as Firefox crashes 5 times and you have submitted the crashes to mozilla, using the Mozilla Crash Reporter. Place crash ID's to this site to find how the problem can be fixed.
#Enter about:crashes in the address bar (that's where you enter your website URL) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.<br><br>
#Copy the 5 most recent crash ID's that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your response here.
More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Firefox crashes article.

• I keep getting popups about updating my browser to firefox 5 then 6 and now 7... Is this a scam?

I am getting popup boxes (no firefox or mozilla logo) saying Firefox beta 5 (at first) then beta version 6, and now beta version 7 are available and asking me to download and install them.
I suspect a pfishing or worse, but some of the functions in my firefox version aren't working quite right now..
Suggestions please and how can I give you further info?

Sounds that you are on the beta update channel.<br />
You can check that by looking at the pref <b>app.update.channel</b> on the about:config page.
If the value of that pref is beta then it is better to download and install the latest Firefox 6.0.x release.

• I was updating Firefox from version 6 to version 7, after updating I tried to open Firefox and the message I got is this: This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found. How can I fix this?

I was updating Firefox to the newest version 7.0.1 from version 6.0.2 I think it was, I clicked the restart Firefox button that always comes up after updating. It started updating and then Firefox never restarted like it was supposed to after it was done updating. I then tried to open Firefox and it told me "This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found." I did have Firefox crash on maybe about 30 minutes or so earlier which bothered me because I have been using Firefox for years and never had it crash on me before but I didn't think much of it at the time it happened because I was able to go back onto Firefox and finish what I had been working on. A while later I checked for updates and updated. The first time I tried to update it didn't work though so I had to shutdown Firefox and reopen Firefox and start the update a second time. It was after the second time that when I tried to open Firefox I got that message about failing to start because xul.dll can't be found. I filed a crash report when my Firefox crashed. This would have been around 1am-2am in the morning that Firefox first crashed and then wouldn't allow me to open it after updating. I have a DELL laptop running the Windows XP operating system but the laptop is probably at least 6 or 7 years old. The laptop will no longer charge so I always have to have it plugged into an outlet. Both my laptop hard drive and my external hard drive give me messages that I am running out of disk space on my hard drive. I bought this laptop 6 or 7 years ago second hand so it could be even older. In short it's a piece of crap and it gives me all kinds of issues but I currently can't afford a new one, but I have never had any problems with Firefox and I use Firefox more than any other aspect of my laptop so it's really really bothering me. May you please help me fix it?

Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?
