Reliability on the MBP (Core 2 Duo) -- freeze wise

I'm currently using the last generation PB, but already sick and tired of the constant freeze issue, and seems like there's no solution to fix and there're more and more users experiencing the problem (check PB AL forum postings)
I think it's about time for an upgrade...
I would like to ask anyone who's using the Core 2 DUO MBP, did this problem go away when the book switched to Intel? Any freeze during idle, or from wake up etc? How would you rate it in terms of reliability?

I don't care if the thread is 100 pages long. You won't find me on such a thread. The only way you can really get a solution is if someone is able to focus on your situation individually. You start getting 100 people trying to solve 200 problems together, and nothing ever gets done, and you just have a rant fest filled with threadjacking. See what Terms of Use says about threadjacking, rants, and trolling. It is more a problem to try to sort out the mess of that, than try to isolate the problems people are actually solving on the thread. Tell everyone on that thread to start a new topic that has a less obvious cause for others to threadjack, and more obvious cause to isolate their problem alone if they really want a solution.
CHUD's documentation is rather sparse as to how to get a common mortal to use it, and therefore I don't touch it. There are some features of it, I wouldn't run myself because they sound like they could cause more damage than good unless you know exactly what you are doing.
If you feel you have a power management or processor issue based on Apple's hardware test CD/Restore disk Startup Manager boot that came with your machine, take it in to AppleCare to have the machine repaired.
If you have an undetectable issue that appears even after an erase and install, it probably is the RAM that is improperly seated or has gone bad, or a logicboard issue that the test does not find.

An Archive and Install of an older system on a newer system does not necessarily work, and you may find that causes more freezes. That's because it attempts to install older versions of applications on top of newer ones, and may not always succeed, and you could be left with applications meant for a newer system mixed in with your older system that simply don't work.
Cache programs like Onyx, Macaroni, Applejack, Tiger Cache Cleaner, etc... can cause freezes if they attempt to clear caches when the machine is writing them because the cache files get corrupted. An Archive and Install won't clean up that mess.
So is your data backed up at least twice and do you want to try to isolate your issue? Or have I given you enough information for you to get started on your own?

Check out the website I provided a few replies up on this topic.
They did some speed tests between the 2.2 and the 2.4 versions and even tested the graphics cards. From what the results showed there was some relative gains to get the 2.4. However, alot also depends on what you'll use the MacBook for. If it's for gaming you might fair better with the 2.4 and the 256MB graphics card.
I use my 2.2 MBP to cut video with FCE and, frankly, I'm satisfied with the performance.

Fans running too fast on MBP Core II Duo

I'm starting a new post 'cause the older one was getting unfruitful. Let me wrap up quickly. I've got both a MBP Core Duo and a MBP Core II Duo. I had notice that the fans on my MBP Core II Duo were very noisy compared to the MBP Core Duo. So I ran smcFanControl (NO I HAVEN'T CHANGED THE SETTINGS AND NO smcFanControl ISN'T BAD FOR YOUR COMPUTER), I just used it for MONITORING PURPOSES. Ok.
I've capture both results in movies so you can see the differences. I've used a cloned system and compiled some code to give the cpu some meat. Here are some behaviors I've noticed:

1) The MBP Core II Duo runs at a minimum of 2000 rpm vs 1000 for the MBP Core Duo
2) The MBO Core II Duo shoots very quickly and hangs it's fans much higher.
3) After a while the MBP Core II Duo has a temp of around 68 with fans running at 4500! The Core Duo instead at a similar temp is down to 2300!
I'm recording with my machines and it's barely usable with the fans.
Has anyone noticed the same thing or is it my machine?

The movies in your link don't appear to be working so can't comment on those.
Your post confirms what I suspect is true about C2D temps compared to CD temps, which is that the C2D is fundamentally no cooler (possibly hotter) than the CD, but Apple have doubled the fan speed in the C2D to make the C2D run cooler.
Seems to me that Apple bent over backwards to make the CD quiet, and this resulted in them running too hot, and with the C2D they have swung the other way.
I am using Fan Control 1.1 on my CD to steer a middle course. I have left it with 1000 rpm min but set it to start ramping the fan speed earlier and more steeply as temp rises. So most of the time it is quiet, and high temps which can be reached with the Apple settings are avoided.
Doesn't help your C2D problem much except to suggest that you use Fan Control 1.1 to devise settings to suit your purposes. I suggest you have Hardware Monitor on continuously (hidden) so that you see what has happened to the temp over typical working sessions using different settings in Fan Control. When you have found what works you don't need to keep Hardware Monitor active.
C2D can't need 2000 rpm the whole time!

I had the opportunity to test (rough empirical) a Quad G5 2.5 G5 w/6600 cart horse 4Gb RAM 1Tb RAID0 vs MBP Core 2 Duo 2.33 2Gb RAM 120Gb 5400rpm HDD.
Loaded the same projects onto both machines ... 1 x 518 images and 1 x 296 images. worked on the 518 image project. Previews off.

Straighten: slower, controllable after first movement v. hesitant/jerky

- The faster drives of the Quad and 2x CPU's showed its power in generating previews and writing to disk
- Given notes from Aperture users with 7800GT video, I suspect the MBP Core2Duo would be as fast or maybe faster. I'd love to hear from somebody who can verify
- Even allowing for the slower disk sub-system, the MBP Core2Duo is more than the equivalent of a portable Quad!!! Now ain't that something!

In order to keep up with the core 2 duo processor enabled laptops, apple must sooner or later have the new processors in either the MB lineup or the MBP's...however, if you want to fully take advantage of the new core 2 duo processors, might as well wait 'til next spring..when they come out with the new logic boards for the core 2 duo's...the current core 2 duo's share the same pin lay-out with the core duo's, so they can be used in the same logic boards,....(the people who buy the MB's with the core 2 duo processors are gonna regret buying it if they buy it before spring....cuz of this..)
wait 'til next spring so you'll be fully happy with your MB...or , like me, you can just wait for your order right now and be satisfied with it.....
when you do wait 'til spring, they'll probably have another new technological advancement, so you'll wanna wait for that.....sooner or later....we'll get 3D computer screens!!!!~~~
my point is, you must evaluate what you'll be using your MB for...if the current MB's can fully service you, don't wait...

13" MBP Core 2 Duo version

Where can I still buy a 13" MBP Core 2 Duo version?
I have read to many reviews and blog posts about heat issues in the i5 version for 13" mbps. I have a core 2 duo from 2010 and i love the quiet operation. Now I am in the market to get one for the wife.
Any pointers where I can still buy a core 2 duo version for the regular retail price?

iMac 20-inch 2.66GHz intel core 2 Duo Freezes. I'm running OSX 10.8.4. Please don't tell me the problem is the memory, because I've read a lot of people complaining about the same problem back on 10.6.2 version. I know I need to put more memory on that, but I'll not purchase more right now because I'm not sure it'll worth it. Unless I discover the real solution, I'll not invest in this computer. I've been using Apple products for over 12 years and it's the first time I have an unsolved problem. I'm really sad about that.
Did someone really discovered what happens?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.

Is there a difference between the Intel Core 2 Duo & the Intel Core Duo?

I am looking to buy a new laptop, and I wanted to know if there is a big or major difference between the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, compared to the Intel Core Duo.
I currently have a powerbook G4 and it has a 1.67 GHz PowerPC G2 Processor, which I have noticed isn't that great, I can't download the new snow leopard software update, nor watch movies from Netflex and other stuff like that. Its pretty annoying, so that is why I was asking about the difference between the other two processors, I want to know if it doesn't matter or which one is the best before I buy.
I'm pretty computer dumb when it comes to this stuff that's why I'm asking.

Core 2 Duo processors are newer and more powerful (and thus faster) than Core Duos. Apple's current notebook computers all use Core 2 Duos, so if you buy new, that's what you'll get. The earliest MacBooks and MacBook Pros had Core Duos in them, but the last of those models was discontinued late in 2006.

Anyone know a good place to get a 2GB chip for the new Core 2 duo MBP 2.16

I jst sold my MBP 17 ionch fro the core 2 duo so I can have three GBs Of ram for ma audio apps. I am trying to find a decent priced 2GB chip unless there is a typo crucial says 929.00 I almost passed out. I used to get all my ram there but that is just too high any other suggestions

I wouldn't expect a big drop too soon. That's a lot of RAM density on a small board. Unless there's a major increase in demand I wouldn't expect much of a drop in price.
No doubt there may be cheaper prices than Datamem's. Although their prices are usually competitive, they are not always the cheapest. But they do offer good service, fast delivery, have a good return policy, and experience with Macs. My recommendation is based on a 10 year history with them which has been 100 percent satisfactory.
But $500 for a marginal 1 GB of RAM is a lot. I'm not convinced it's enough to warrant going from 2 GBs to 3 GBs. I have 2 GBs in mine and it seems perfectly fine for my needs.

"Aperture (3.2) cannot be opened because of a problem." on MBP Core 2 Duo, 10.7.2

I recently upgraded to 3.2 from the App Store and was able to run the program until today. I am now completely unable to open it. I have tried the standard troubleshooting, including moving the application support files to the desktop, deleting the com.apple.aperture preference file, opening while holding CMD and option, and reinstalling. I have also tried moving my Aperture Library to start the program fresh. Nothing has worked; the same "cannot be opened" error persists.
I have read about other users having issues with the program constantly crashing, but that specific problem appears limited to Intel Core Duo processors, while mine is an Intel Core 2 Duo running on a MBP 3,1. I am starting this thread to find out if any with similar specs have had the same issue and known how to resolve it. Thank you in advance for your help!

@Frank: I did read through the article shuttersp33d posted. Unfortunately, for my scenario, the support doc redirects me to a page for OSX Lion reinstallation and recovery:

Mountain lion not compatible with MBP core 2 duo

Hi there,
I have an MBP 17" which has been running on Leopard until the other day. I wanted to upgrade to Mountain Lion so that I can utilise some of its features. So I upgraded to Snow Leopard as indicated on the Apple Store web pages. I bought the disc and had it mailed to me and have installed and clicked and ticked and restarted and done all the things asked of me in the process to get the OS to the most up-to-date version. (10.6.8)
Now, when I go to Apple's App Store it gives me this message!
We could not complete your purchase.
We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer.
So my question is, where do I go from here? Why can they 'not complete my purchase' ? What is 'not compatible' ?

MBP Core 2 Duo vs iMac Core Duo

I am pondering upgrading my laptop (1.5GHz G4 Powerbook) to a new Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro (2.33GHz, 2GB RAM, 256MB Video). I know that the performance upgrade here is going to be significant.
However, 1 year ago I bought a 20" iMac with the Core Duo processor in it (2GHz, 2GB Ram, 256MB Video) which I use for Aperture and World of Warcraft.
Am I going to see a noticeable difference in performance between the iMac and the Macbook Pro? If so, I'll just sell the iMac and buy an external display for the laptop.

The previous poster is correct. Because the iMac will be using desktop components, despite the increased processor speed of the MBP, apps like WoW will probably still run better on the iMac. However, as you can see from my Macintosh Computer profile, I have an earlier model 2.0 GHz MBP and I can tell you that even without 2GB of ram, which I have, it runs amazing. The 2 GB of ram just puts it over the top. And if you're still not satisfied with the frame rate, just run boot camp and install WoW on there. If I remember correctly, it'll run about 6 frames per second faster. In spite of this, I don't really like running windows, so I run WoW on Tiger anyways. And to be honest, it looks equally as good as my friend running wow on his gaming laptop. I don't even use an external display, so that'll be like the cherry on top. I guess all I'm saying is keep the iMac if you want, but I think you'd be equally satisfied and perhaps save some money if you used the MBP alone--with or without an external display.
I have never used aperture so I can't comment on that, sorry.

Putting in the new Core 2 Duo...

Has anyone heard anything about when/if the MBP will have the new chips put in? I heard mid to late August.

No need to apologize; having no direct experience of Apple computers, you are right to be concerned. Let me assure you that you need not be. I'll do what I can to help you get "The Feel."
Apple's hardware revisions tend to ocurr on a cycle, but that will be modified by the intro of new Intel machines. With the exception of the towers, the entire line has now made the transition, so we can expect the cycle to resume as normal pretty soon. Although we cannot speculate, we can generally expect something new to be announced at the WWDC (Aug. 7). Generally speaking, a particular platform (iMac, laptop, tower) usually gets an update at least once a year, and new versions of OS X are released on about the same rotation (once in each calendar year).
For you, the first consideration should be that any new laptop will be an Intel Core Duo machine. If you purchase a Macbook Pro, it will also have a very powerful PCI Express video card with dedicated video memory. This will position you as well as can be for any future OS or application updates/upgrades.
Of more concern to you should be when your purchase makes sense for you. Is there some compelling reason to wait? Is there some reason to purchase now?
If this machine is intended for use at school (college??), it might be wise to purchase enough ahead of time that you will have adequate time to adjust to the new OS. My suggestion would be to attempt to migrate completely to OS X, foregoing the installation of Windows entirely, if you can. Your productivity (and enjoyment) will benefit from remaining entirely in OS X, and you can avoid having to waste precious disk space on Windows. A "cold turkey" migration does take a bit of time for adjustment, and you want to be completely up to speed by the time school places demands on your time. This consideration makes more sense to me than does which processor you end up with.

MBP Core 2 duo 2.33 vs. PowerMac G5 dual 2.0

Hey all. Trying to decide what type of computer to buy here. Upgrading from a G4 powerbook (12", 1.5 processor, 1.25GB ram, 100GB 7200rpm HD). I will be using the computer for audio recording (up to 4 simultaneous tracks as of now) with various external firewire audio interfaces.
I am aware of the firewire issues with the new 2.4 MBP's so those are out of the question. My choices are a 1 year old MBP 15" Core 2 Duo 2.33 model with about a year of apple care left or a PowerMacG5 dual 2.0 (early or june 2004 most likely) with either 2x20" monitors or one 23" monitor. All will have about 2 GB ram. Price aside which would you all go for. Which has the obvious power advantage, dual core or dual processors. Also the MBP will have 256mb video ram, the PowerMacG5 will have either 64 or 128mb. obviously the MBP has the upper hand there.
Now to add price into the equation. The PowerMac will cost me about $1400 for the setup with monitors. The MBP, about $1900. What would you all do?
Also, can anyone enlighten me on the differences between different "models" (or production eras) of the MBP. I know the video cards changed manufacturers and ram size throughout the range. Did anything else change substantially? Is one of the "models" exceptionally better than another. Thanks alot...

Yes, any 9.5mm high SATA will fit.

The chances are better than even that it will run hotter than your previous drive. All other things being equal (rarely the case), a 7200 will use more power and create more heat.
(c) How about power.. would it chew up more battery?

(The reason I've opted for 7200 over 5400 is purely for speed.. I regularly use Audio Production apps as well as Photoshop & FCP so figured the faster RPM would be advantageous?
Again, all other things being equal, a 7200 will certainly be faster.
