Reliable Motherboard, Processor, & RAM?

So Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and all of the largest sales of the year are near and I wish to install a new motherboard, processor, and most likely a bit of RAM.
My PC specs can be found here:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01982717&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en#N107
Although I do not use the integrated graphics anymore as I've recently installed a Geforce GT 630 graphics card, as well as a Corsair CX500.
I'm sure I could figure all of this out, although I cannot find any good pages dedicated towards finding a good, cheap motherboard that won't necessarily be running things that are over-the-top, but to be well designed and not at a sky-high price. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a motherboard that supports PCI-E 3.0 and just 1 PCI-E x16 port is fine, no crossfire needed. A good design that could last me a few years would be absolutely fantastic.
Now the processor. I've read that AMD would be a good choice over Intel, but again, not sure. Of course, compatible with any suggested motherboards. I've heard that Quad-Core or even 6 cores would be a good choice for the price, depending on where you get it. Most likely a 64-bit is a good choice.
And the RAM. I'm interested in about 8 GB of RAM because 4 GB isn't doing the job at the moment. I've heard that Ripjaws is a good choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
I'm sure that DDR3 would be a nice choice although I'm not familiar with RAM choice.
Here are a few side questions:
Would it be ideal to also install an SSD drive for better performance? I'm attempting to stay low on price so anything not needed will not go into place.
Is it a good idea to wipe the hard drive before installing these components?
Any answered questions are appreciated to the fullest!
Thanks,
Peter

I'd rather not bump, but again, suggestions?

  • MSI Z97 G45 Motherboard (CPU / RAM PROBLEM)

Hey guys! I recently built my first PC and need some help! I'll list my setup before elaborating.
    Case = NZXT H440 Black/Red
    MOBO = MSI Z97 G45
    CPU = i7 4790k
    RAM = TridentX 2400 (16GB)
PSU = Corsair AX 760 Platinum
    GPU = MSI GTX 970
    SSD = Samsung Pro 850
Okay so basically after I finished the build and fired it up everything worked GREAT! But, I realized the DRAM was only running at 1333 mhz by default. I did a little research and read that you're suppose to enable XMP Profile 1 on this MSI MOBO in order to achieve the 2400 mhz this memory offers - so that's what I did! However, this caused the CPU to overheat! Apparently XMP overclocks the CPU as well? Bad! I'm on stock cooling. It took me forever to figure out that it was the XMP that was causing the overheating too.
How can I achieve 2400 mhz WITHOUT overclocking the CPU and frying my PC? Why do I have to overclock at all? The ram is sold as 2400 and suppose to be compatible with my motherboard, processor, etc.
    Please help!

Memory speed is down to how your computers CPU's Memory controller handles the higher frequancy and if the CPU sees that the IMC is suddenly loosing a hold it will boost up the Voltage on the IMC (More voltage = More Heat) its a total shot in the dark that any CPU can use above its listed memory speed without needing more voltage to be stable!
your CPU's IMC will be overtaxed by running at 2400 so the voltage is increased to use that as the speed is at 150% what the IMC was rated at (1333/1600Mhz)
    for your 4790k
    Memory Specifications
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type)    32 GB
    Memory Types    DDR3 1333/1600
Max # of Memory Channels    2
    Max Memory Bandwidth    25.6 GB/s
    ECC Memory Supported ‡ No
if i was you its always a good idea to get a aftermarket cooler as the intel stock ones are very poor and are just barely enougth so the best thing to do is get a better one (e.g. a Coolermaster Hyper 212) that has a higher cooling capacity for not that much money!
that ram is putting 150% its design load on the IMC so it will be generating more heat then it was meant for so you need better cooling if your running those high OC memory sticks!
So what happens if I turn up the frequency to 2400 mhz without using the XMP profiles? Will the CPU still overclock? I know the memory needs more voltage at higher frequency, but what about CPU? Sorry I'm new to all this it's a lot to take in.

  • Motherboard killing RAM??

I woke up this morning to my computer beeping and not willing to startup.  My LED indicator shows it being a memory problem.  I haven't gotten to try any new memory modules in it yet since nothing is open on Easter, but I imagine my problem will be fixed by new memory because this has happened twice before.  Two other times in the last year my memory has just died.  And its been different brands of memory and even multiple sticks of memory dying at the same time.  So is my motherboard killing my RAM somehow???
I have a KT3 Ultra motherboard with an AMD T-bird processor.
    Thanks,
    Todd

this time it was generic ram although the time it died a few months ago it was better RAM.  i had three sticks of memory in.  two were pc2100 and one was pc2700.
i havent changed any of the settings in the BIOS.

  • Adding a new processor + RAM to a Sun Fire X2270

    Hi,
    I have a Sun Fire X2270 with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5504 @ 2.00GHz CPU and 8 GB RAM from factory.
The server has 2 processors sockets, I want to add another new processor (before it gets older).
Can I just buy a new processor from Internet? I called Oracle but I think they are not interested in selling and sending just one processor.
According to the tech specs of the server hardware I have a couple of Intel processors options apart of the one that came preinstalled, the same Intel Xeon 5500 series.
This is the one I want:
    Intel® Xeon® Processor L5520 (8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel® QPI)
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=40201
Can I just buy it and plug it in? no special version from Sun/Oracle? isn't the same exact model of the one that already has, but the same Intel series, is this possible to have different processors models? this one has a couple of more features and it is faster.
Of course I also will buy more RAM, what do you say about this one:
    Kingston KTS-SF313/8G 8GB 1333MHz Reg ECC Module

  • I have an early 2008 Macbook-- which components (hard drive/processor/ram?) could I upgrade myself?

And does anyone know models of especially hard drives or processors that would be compatible?  Thanks!

You can upgrade both the RAM and the hard drive yourself. Both are very easy to do. These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM. The model 4,1 (Early 2008) can use 6gb of 200 pin 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/ - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • KT3 Ultra 2 -C motherboards pc3200 ram support ?

Hi, I'm using Kt3 Ultra 2-C motherboard and pc2700 ram added on it. I think to add pc 3200 ram.  Can I use side by side both ram. Thanks.

You can, but if you find problems, you'll know where they come from. BTW the faster memory will degrade to slower mem. speed. Also, if you'r running a 333FSB CPU. memories will run at that max.speed.

  • Motherboard / processor compatibility?

  • UPGRADING?? What 45nm board/processor/ram/PSU/VC combo for stability and speed?

    Greetings all.
See from Aaron Yuri's list of compatible MBs my wife now gets my Nov'06 [a fast end of line] P975X PUE.
Not sure why MSI designed it without 45nm support - but that's a cat I cannot skin - so never mind!
Want 'stable' and fast - no overclocking needed - just brute force speed and graphics representation of time-series on-line financial data.
Use is primarily as a 24/7 equities data - calculations and graphs of 2D value [Y] vs time[X] data.
Continue WINXP SP3 for stability and compatibility with many Video cards and programs.
HDs: RAID 0 on two WD RE Caviars 320 gb drives for excellent R/W speed [Backup nightly w 1TB NAS].
Graphical display will be a quad-DVI linked to 4x24" flat panel screens.
    Would appreciate Reccys as to:
    1) MSI board - proven stable for the new 45 nm chips, with great PCI-E or PCI EXp2 VideoCard support.
    2) PSU - more than adequate  but also very 'quiet'?
    3) CPU [looking at the E8200 - as quad CPUs just not yet ready for most Softs to justify price premium]
    4) v. stable RAM [DDR 2 or 3?] - Here I need big time help as I want forward looking but need no hassles with new issues that are not yet stable.  [Nov06 -my 975X had many hassles with 800 RAM]   No sense going to DDR3 yet I think.
finally - if anyone out there has experience with:
    5) quad-dvi Video card?  Looking at the NVidia Quadros and ATIs
    - workstation or high end multi-monitor graphics.
I see Asus has the new quad-Ati base EAAH3870X2 but many 2D packages do not use this - so may stick to workstation cards.
[I have tried doubling up on 2x-DVI cards -seems they need to be absolutely identical or all kinds of hassles installing them] - so we will stick to a good 2D card - like the PNY NVS 440 or the ATI Radeon
Thanks folks for the feedback and reccys for Stable and very fast.

Sure, if you can wait further, the P45 series seems to be a good grab as well. I'm anticipating for it.
NOVO JOE - yes - but here is my concern and I was just wondering also about the P45.
BUT - I jumped in Nov06 - for the P975X PUE - after some great Reccys all around - and I ended up fighting the darn thing for a couple of months with memory issues...Took me about 3 months to get it frigging stable- and with RAID ...   So I was concerned that the P45 also was early - and also at a premium price.  I want something for 2 to 3 years - til the next IMPT generation comes along.  SO was going to get a sterling performer with stability - and not spend a lot of time building it to work....
If you all have any insight into the upcoming P45 that looks like we might not have this sort of start up issues - I'm happy to listen.  Have seen some reviews so far - all pretty good - just don't have days and weeks to fritter with it....

  • Help! is my motherboard faulty?

    Hello,
I just bought a Neo 2 FISR2 motherboard with the 865PE chipset. I bought a P4 2.6 MHZ processor and 2 500MHZ ram sticks (512MB total) to go in it. I am using parts from my previous PC to upgrade. These parts are a Maxtor ATA133 hard drive and the other part that is at issue, my Gainward Ti42000 128MB G4 video card.
I noticed the warning notice about the installing 3.3V video cards in this motherboard, and I couldnt find out how many volts the Gainward is, but their are no jumpers on the card, so I dont think its a variable voltage card, and it has the 2 notches in the interface area so I assumed its an AGP4x and therefore not a 3.3V card.
So, anyway this is what happened. I put everything together and booted the system up fine. I tried to use the Promise IDE controller at first, but found that my current XP install wouldn't recognize it, so I switched it to a regular IDE slot. I then rebooted and got the WinXP logo load screen followed by a blue screen saying something about page fault...if this is the first time you get message reboot blah blah blah...if you get it repeatedly blah blah. So I rebooted with XP boot CD and reinstalled XP. Midway through the process I got a fatal installation error. I think that something is wrong with my CD because I tried reinstalling XP on my old setup after getting this, and got the same problem.
So, anyway, with the new motherboard, processor, ram and my Gainward video card, I rebooted after the setup error and my screen comes up blank. I try rebooting and same thing, my screen is blank. Everything is getting power, but my screen is blank, as if the monitor thinks my PC is off. I disconnect everything from the motherboard, reconnect a few hours later, and still same problem, everything blank. I try the video card on the old motherboard, everything blank also. So I thought my vid card was the problem. But then I waited like 6 hours, and tried again with my old motherboard, and it worked. So then I tried it with the new MSI motherboard, and it did not work. I went back to the old motherboard to make sure the video card was still working, and it was.
So is my MSI motherboard faulty? Or is the Video card a 3.3V video card? I cant seem to find out one way or the other from the manual or the Gainward website.
    Any help is immensely appreciated.
    Thanks

That 'regular' slot is better then the promise as it is supposed to be connected to the Southbridge of the mobo instead of the pci bus (I say supposed to as the device manager (on my 875 system btw) says it is on the pci bus)

I got the exact same error on my corporate edition winXP pro (Since I used to work at home the company I worked for gave me a license of some sort, not sure if it was all legal, but ok) Now I bought a new XP pro CD, completely legal and with service pack 1a and the problem disappeared, now I'm here typing (installed it last sunday)

  • 4TB Drive not recognized on Z87-G41

    Hi folks,
This is an Ubuntu box that hosts VMs and serves as a NAS. I'm trying to get it to recognize some 4TB WD Red NAS drives, and they only show up as 3TB, even in the BIOS! So I don't think this is OS-level.
    Specifics:
      - Ubuntu 14.04
      - Installed Windows 8.1 on another HD to update the motherboard, so that's available for troubleshooting.
      - MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate motherboard
      - Processor/RAM: Intel Core i3 4340 @ 3.60GHz, 1x8GB Crucial DDR3 1600.
      - I've got four of these hard drives, 2 retail and 2 OEM. ONE of them, ONCE, showed up as 4TB in the Ubuntu disk manager, then after a reboot, switched back to 3TB.
    Things I've done:
      - Updated to latest BIOS (v1.7), which claims to have improved 4TB HDD capability. Still showing up as a 3TB drive in the BIOS menus.
      - Formatted the drive with a GUID partition table in Ubuntu, Windows 8 and via a GParted boot disk.
      - Installed an IO Crest SI-PEX40064 SATA card. Reviews claim this thing recognizes 4TB drives, but again they show up as 3TB.
I'm getting desperate here. Can anyone help me?

    Thanks for your replies.

Have you tried connecting only a single drive and see what is the amount recognised? Also did you use SATA II or III cables?
I hadn't tried just the 4TB drive; I had been doing OS + that. Just tried the drive alone, issue persists. I've been using SATA II cables, but I've got a couple of new SATA III cables sitting around so I opened that and used it -- no change there, either.

The BIOS 1.7 states quite clearly, "Improved 4TB HDD Compatibility."
That's what I said in the original post... not sure what you mean by this.

How did you flash your BIOS and did you do a full CMOS clear after the BIOS flash?
I updated via the Windows downloader/installer GUI. After a restart, I relaunched it and confirmed that BIOS was up to v1.7. I hadn't cleared the CMOS, so I just did it (power off, short the jumper indicated in the manual, power back on). It certainly said all settings were cleared, although I don't know whether that's what you mean by "full" CMOS clear.

If all that fails, then you need to contact MSI technical and tell them your config (drives used) so that they can ascertain the problem.
Sounds like that's the next step.
Thanks again guys. Please let me know if you think of anything else I could try while I await a response from support.

Could anyone let me know the best currently available PC desktop setup for premiere CS6?
motherboard, processor, RAM, vid-card, cooler etc.
Note this is NOT about the system (minimum/suggested) requirements that Adobe consider and communicate but the BEST performance that possible nowadays. Obviously I wouldn't spend thousands on the strongest and fastest gamer pc that available as probably Premiere would not be able to use all its resources. As far as I know it can only use few cores so there no need to buy 4-6-8 cores processor.
So please share your experiences/advices on the ideal setup. I really consider to edit 2.7K and 4K later on. For know FHD and 2K, editing, slight grading, and lots of material (5-6 hours) on the timeline.
Many thanks for any kind of help.

  • Can Someone please help me with ERROR 4251

I have tried everything! even slowing down the burn speed.
Can someone please help with error 4251 when burning.
I have my diagnostics report done as well.

The last post in that forum said a few things.
    1.Restart computer
    2.Disable anti-virus/security programs
3.Update hardware and software drivers.(I'm guessing mainly the cd-rom drive drivers)
Try those things and see if it is still a problem.
