Reliable p2p video-chat

Hi!
Saying p2p I mean direct (without some kind of account) chat between two workstations each with static IP and opened all needed ports. I have tried plenty pieces of software (linphone, qutecom, jitsi, ekiga, empathy, ...), but have not found acceptable one (direct sip call - like sip:[email protected] - doesn't work at all, or segfaults, or memory leak, and so on).
Is anybody more lucky rather I am?
P.S. I don't mean it must be sip client - probably another p2p ways exists.

OTOH, I'm not sure opening an ssh access is my main dream
I have found this interesting package (it exists in AUR)
http://www.creytiv.com/baresip.html
but have not found any documentation for it yet (searching results in openwrt integration).
I can't help you with SIP things, 'cause they never worked for me, sorry.
I used my proposition (ssh .....) for audio chatting once (and yes there were lags).

  • Improving P2P Video Chat in Bandwidth limited Situations

I did a little work this past week to improve our performance, and automatically scale back our bandwidth usage when we were in low bandwidth situations.  Primarily we were trying to combat choppy audio, video delay, and low video framerate.   It turned into more work than I expected.
Anyway I thought I'd share our approach in hopes that other P2P video chat people here will do the same and we can all learn how to make a LCCS P2P video chat the best it can be.
Let me know what you think, if I suck, etc etc.
    Here's a link to a pdf about it:  http://www.familyhealthnetwork.com/Improving_LCCS_P2P_Video_Chat_In_Bandwidth_Limited_Situ ations.pdf

    Hi Eric,
Sorry for not responding earlier (we've been running around w/ hair on
fire... You'll all see why shortly...), but this is really amazing! Thanks a
ton for putting this together and sharing it with us.
Any technical reason to use XMPP as the message relay for the STFU? Seems
like a simple transient message via LCCS could work here.
I'd love to discuss this a little more deeply once the dust settles on our
    side.

  • Making P2P Video Chat with FMS

Hi, I'm trying to make a P2P video chat application with Flash Builder 4.5 and Flash Media Server 4.5.
First, I've tried a simple sample application using Cirrus(Stratus). It worked very well!
NetConnection -> NetGroup -> 2 NetStreams -> netstream play and publish -> last, netgroup post
    The sample was all OK.
But now, I've changed the server url to my flash media development server.
    rtmfp://p2p.rtmfp.net/XXXXXXXXXXXXXX -> rtmfp://my-fms/application
Here is my application trace log about NetStatusEvent:
    [object NetConnection] NetConnection.Connect.Success
    [object NetConnection] NetGroup.Connect.Success
    [object NetStream] NetStream.Play.Reset
    [object NetStream] NetStream.Play.Start
    [object NetStream] NetStream.Publish.Start
    [object NetConnection] NetStream.Connect.Success
    [object NetConnection] NetStream.Connect.Success
I couldn't get events about NetGroup and NetStream any more!!!!
When using Stratus, It worked well...
I am not familiar with FMS.. did I skip something in FMS setting?

    Hi,
    Thanks for trying RTMFP.
When you made your own application on the development server, did you make any server side scripting on this application or is this a blank application ? The point here is that, for P2P, the Cirrus server has a server script that takes care of bootstrapping one client to the other, which in your case (after moving to your server) is not happening. You need to probably add the scripting for bootstrapping one client to the other.
The following resources can help :
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flashmediaserver/devguide/WSa4cb07693d1238 84520b86f312a354ba36d-7ffe.html#WSa4cb07693d123884520b86f312a354ba36d- 7ff9
I think I have a similar problem. I am using FMS 4.0 and I can't receive any NetGroup event except NetGroup.Connect.Success. There is no events as NetGroup.Neighbor.Connect or NetGroup.Posting.Notify. I made a discussion (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4429330#4429330) and one of the Adobe employees wrote that I don't need to write any bootstrapping (any server side code):
    Chandan_Abhishek worte:
You don't have to implement any server side code. Just keep a blank app on the server and make two client side apps.
Can please someone explain, do I have to write any server side code or not? Do I have to bootstrap clients or not?

  • Best practice for p2p video chatting

I use netgroup to implement a video chatting program. The # of memebers in this group is small (2 or 3). I find the audio is delayed (sometimes by 4s) and even cut (e.g. I count number from 1 to 10 but the other memeber only heard 1,2,3 then jump to 7). This happens both when the two members are in totally different locations and when they are in the same location using different computers.
I wonder if there is any article about improving the performance and reduce the delay.
    Thanks.

NetStream.audioReliable is only for 1:1 (DIRECT_CONNECTIONS) or client-server streaming.  all data in a P2P multicast stream is partially reliable (where the reliability is controlled by the NetStream.multicastWindowDuration).
a P2P multicast may have a jitter of up to the multicast window duration.  shorter values for the window can decrease latency and jitter but may also decrease the reliability of the stream (leading to more glitches and artifacts).
for interactive chat between a small number of participants, you should use the DIRECT_CONNECTIONS form.

  • P2P video chat.

    hi,
I am new to the form and I would like somone to point me in the right direction.
I would like to develop a video/audio chat that also two or more users to video/audio chat.I will also want admin options.
I need to learn this fast, I have programming experience in php and c++ so I am not a total noob.
I guess it should be done using Real Time Media Flow Protocol but I don't know much about it.
Please tell me everything I need to learn in order make this work:books, tutorials, existing scripts, ecc.
    thanks.

Hi, I'm new, too. Nice to meet you. I had a little bit of trouble signing in and was reading everything I could to fix the problem, so maybe that's why I noticed this. When I click the "Overview" tab at the top of this forum, the forum page reloads with three things. There's a couple of links to the FAQs and things to read before you post. Above those, there's a caution sign and the text:
"Please note that this forum category is for help with the Flash Player and  NOT for users seeking assistance with  programming Flash and/or Flex. If you are seeking assistance with programming,  click here and choose the proper category to post in."
If you click there, you're directed to a list of forums. I gather there's likely one that better suits your topic.

  • Can ANYONE with 10.4.8 do video chats?

    Hi all..
I've been having all kinds of problems doing iChat audio and video chats--various combinations of me not hearing and/or seeing them, or vice versa; plus plenty of "not responding" errors (error -8). Occasionally it will work, but the next time we try, it usually doesn't. I've been working with a few people having OS's ranging from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8, and Macs ranging from Powerbook G4s, Powermac Dual G5s, Intel MacMini, MacBook, and MacBook Pro. Following advice I've seen on the Web, I've tried port-forwarding ports 5060, 5190, 5220, 5222, 5297, 5298, 5353, 16384-16403 in my router or the other persons', or not forwarding them, opening those same ports in the Mac OSX firewalls, or not, turning the firewalls off in one or both Macs, turning them both on, same for the routers and modems, quitting and restarting iChat, rebooting both machines, etc.
The common denominator in all these experiments I've conducted is this: if both the Macs are behind routers (different routers) and one or both are running 10.4.8, iChat cannot be consistently used to do video chats. (It can work occasionally, but definitely not every time.) If neither Mac is running 10.4.8, it works, even with the firewalls up.
So, my question is: is there anyone out there running 10.4.8 that can do video chats consistently? If so, what's your secret? Thanks!
    --AVAvatar
    Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have no problems with 10.4.8 and video chat.
I do NOT have any of the cited ports open on my computer or port forwarded on my DSL modem/router (an ActionTec GT701-WG running an ISP-specific firmware load for Qwest Communications, my ISP). I am NAT'ed here at home, using static IP addrress assignment on the home LAN. One of my sons who lives here in Colorado, too, has a G5 iMac on Comcast Cable, and, like me, has no iChat-related ports open on his computer or port forwarded on his cable modem/router. He is also NAT'ed and is running 10.4.8 with latest security update. He's not static IP on the home LAN -- his modem is dishing out "192.168.1.x" DHCP addresses. Similarly, my other son, who lives in Florida, has an iMac G5, I'm 85% sure that he is on a cable connection, too. He is NAT'ed and is running 10.4.8 with latest security update and has no iChat-related ports open on his computer or port forwarded on his cable modem/router. He is DHCP, too, on the home LAN. We can all talk to one another. Unfortunately, my Quicksilver computer is too slow to do multi-user conference, but I have ichat AV'ed with each of them individually and they tell me they iChatAV with one another.
My work-provided Powerbook G4, running 10.4.8 with latest security update, also works between most hotels' networks and home, from as close as Cheyenne WY to as far away as Sydney Australia. I have no iChat-related ports open on my Powerbook. On my most recent business travel trip to Phoenix AZ, in addition to touching bases with the spouse at home, I multi-conferenced with both sons on it. That was cool. I had never multi-user conferenced before.
I am unable to iChat AV with anyone from my work computer (or my work-owned laptop affiliated to their LAN), though. Apparently, once the connection tries to migrate from oscar.aol.com to handoff traffic for establishing P2P SIP, snatmap, A/V, etc., connections, my work's firewall blocks all that stuff because, I am presuming, it doesn't look like traffic on those ports (5060, 5678, etc.) is "established" but rather appears as uninvited inbound traffic, so it gets blocked and the call crashes, regardless of who calls whom. Our IT guy won't open destination ports 5060, 5678, 16384-16403 from any IP to my IP, so, no iChatAV capability from work. It's too bad there wasn't a way to port-forward the P2P traffic over a ssh tunnel.
While on the road (i.e., business travel), I confess that I have had a few problems with audio/video distortion, dropped calls, or unable to connect reliably, but not many instances of that -- not very many at all. I suspect that these occurrences have had more to do with choked bandwidth or lots of fading or interference on the wireless channel on the hotel connection more than anything else.
When I have read these threads in this forum, they seem to indicate, to me, anyways, that perhaps the routers/hubs installed between the computer and the DSL/cable modem are the likely culprits for crappy or no iChatAV sessions. You might want to focus your attention on these devices, until a more robust iChatAV comes out, if ever.

  • Can Adobe Air build multiple live video chat and whiteboard application?

Can Adobe Air build multiple live video chat application? and
    whiteboard like MSN whiteboard?
    Is there any online documentation?

    1) any practical use of P2P multicast will have a delay measured in seconds. it shouldn't go to 30 seconds unless you have a large NetStream.bufferTime.
    2) i strongly recommend against changing the multicast stream parameters. they all interact with each other. decreasing the window duration will decrease the effective reliability of the stream, by reducing the amount of time to receive all of the fragments of the stream as they pass through the P2P group -- especially when people join or leave the group, which can disrupt the low latency "push" trees that are constructed in the group.
    3) you should be able to change the encoding parameters on the fly without a major disruption. are you using H.264 or Sorenson Spark?  it's possible that your camera doesn't like to have its capture size changed and it is freezing temporarily.  i'm not having any trouble changing the capture size with my camera (and using H.264).  i recall there being some issue with changing the frames-per-second on the fly (at least some time ago, and i don't remember what the issue is) -- there was enough of an issue that i disabled it in my little app while actively publishing.

  • Video chat disconnecting after ~1 minute

Hey guys, I'm having trouble with iChat disconnecting video after ~1 minute. The problem machine is a late 2009 15" MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.5 with everything up to date. We're on a University network and I'm able to video chat with using other computers, so I don't think it's a network issue.
When the video drops, I get the usual message that (Problem Computer) ended the video chat. iChat keeps running on the problem computer when the connection is dropped, so it's not crashing the entire application. I've tried removing iChat and reinstalling from the cd, updating with the combo updater, removing the ichat plist from ~/User/Library/Preferences. This is what the system log reports when the video is dropped:

  • Odd behavior during full screen video chat with Mountain Lion Messages?

I've recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on two MacBook Pros (from Lion) and have started to use the new Messages app. I've been using iChat for years and found it reliable for the most part.
However, I've noticed a new behavior that seems like a bug in the new Messages app.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Open Messages app
    2. Initiate a non-FaceTime video chat via the Buddy List or the main Messages window video button
    3. Once the video is started, click on the Full Screen button in the window title bar or in the black toolbar at the bottom of the video
    4. After the video has gone full screen, move the mouse cursor
    5. At this point, the video will slide over (like a Mission Control / Exposé space). The video chat is actually STILL running in full screen view as a dedicated space -- you can slide back with the trackpad or the keyboard as per normal Mission Control controls.
Step 5 is NOT the correct behavior as per OS X 10.7 Lion. Not to mention, the black toolbar is unusable and it's hard to reach the menu bar Full Screen toggle button since moving the cursor even one pixel makes the screen slide over.
Has anyone experienced this? If yes, is there a solution? How do we bring this to Apple's attention for a future fix?

I got the machine to reboot but I had to hold down the power button. I found an article on macworld that said to use the command +control+eject buttons to restart but no go. Nothing.
There really... REALLY ought to be some way to exit full screen in such a case.

  • Reduce CPU usage with RTMFT video chatting

    Hi,
We are using the FMS4 for 1-1 real time video chatting. it is fine but the CPU usage are very high.
(not P2P but use UDP based RTMFP) currently connection to server as " rtmfp://1.2.3.4:80/live"
we use the :80 I guess it helps to deal with the firewall with HTTP tunneling? (seems if it is true, it will this degrade performance?)
with 320*240; it is using 30~50 % CPU;  with 480*360: 40-60% CPU at the clients.  so high... decent client machine: Intel i5 650. Quad 3.3Ghz  8G RAM. win7 64
Any idea on reducing cpu usage?

RTMFP is a UDP-based protocol and does not currently tunnel over HTTP.  when you specify port 80 with RTMFP, you're using UDP port 80, not TCP port 80.  also, that port 80 is the fmsedge port; you will be redirected to a different port (19350+ by default) for the true client-server connection.
RTMFP has significantly higher overhead than RTMP for two main reasons: 1) RTMFP is a complete network transport protocol of similar complexity to TCP, but implemented entirely in user space instead of in the operating system kernel, so every packet sent on the network requires special processing and at least one context switch to kernel mode for transmission or reception; 2) every byte of every packet in RTMFP is encrypted with AES-128-CBC, a non-trivial cipher requiring a not-insubstantial amount of CPU.  there is no unencrypted form of RTMFP.

  • Anyone has a sample script of multicast video chat in php using Cirrus

I was trying to create a multicast videochat from Videophonelabs sample and the reg.cgi in cgi-bin is nothing but a problem. I don't know much about this old outdated cgi thing. I wasted so many hours with errors on some funky database created by Sqlite3 which some servers don't even bother with.. Can someone post a working sample of multicast video chat in PHP?MySQL using Cirrus? No opensource RVC codes like that as they are all are for dating and adult chat. Looking for   a decent multicast script with no Phython!
    Thanks.

here you are php id manager with sqlite, but it's not a big problem with converting it to mysql, the same sql queries: https://github.com/delosgatos/P2P-ID-Manager-for-Video-Chat-Sample-from-Adobe-Labs

  • Maximum number of video chats supported by iChat Server

    Hello all,
In the early 10.5 OS X server days, there were reports that OS X Server's iChat Server included support for 7 simultaneous video chats. Is this true? Is this still true with OS X 10.6 Server's iChat Server?
If not, what is the maximum number of video chats supported with OS X Server's iChat Server?
    Thank you,
    -darrell

In the early 10.5 OS X server days, there were reports that OS X Server's iChat Server included support for 7 simultaneous video chats. Is this true?
Not sure if the reports were about saying that; but it is not true.
Is this still true with OS X 10.6 Server's iChat Server?
    Nope
If not, what is the maximum number of video chats supported with OS X Server's iChat Server?
Unlimited. This is 'cos audio and video streams are p2p and don't pass through the iChat server. The server has a limited involvement in helping the iChat clients set up the p2p connections, but once connected, it is no longer involved.

  • MSN is working with iChat but can't video chat?

I used psi to make a jabber account and added an MSN transport, so i can open MSN with iChat. Its pretty cool, but my biggest problem is video chat. Is it possible to video and voice chat with my friends who have a webcam and are using them on MSN on a PC? If it isn't I really regret buying two macs.=[

Which Jabber server did you use? Any free and reliable free server?

  • Stalls at "starting video chat"

    pbook 15" 1.5ghz w/ 1gb ram
    OS X 10.4.2 iChat 3.0.1
currently wireless in hotel ISP unknown - possibly timewarner
1232 down/1260 up (i know, can't be right, was 1100 down/280 up at one time)
    firewall disabled
I have tried connecting with the appleu3 test bots, and the invite gets to "starting video chat", and hangs until I cancel the chat. I have been trying to video chat with a friend back home where it still worked, and I have been unsuccessful thus far. I am in Austin, TX, and will me in the dorm at UT by Friday, where I hope to regain a reliable connection. When working with my friend (XP) it consistently states that i did not respond, however the test bots merely stall. Is there anything besides possible hardware issues in the hotel that could be preventing me from a successful test?
    Any advice is much appreciated

    HI Bpcunning,
It is almost certianly the hotel's connection to the internet/firewall that is the problem.
However not knowing whether it worked before going to the hotel is a bit of hinderence to being certain.
    Ralph

  • Video Chat on Android very slow !

    Hi everyone,
I'm developing an audio/video chat Android application. On my Android device (Samsung Galaxy S), all works... but it is very very slow !!
I launch the application (release version) on my phone and then I launch this application from my computer (from Flash Builder)
Each applications are connected to the Cirrus server and streams are sent/received. On my computer, no problem. But on my phone, the CPU usage grows immediatly (>90 % !) and the app finish to crash.
Before I click on the "connect" button : RAM 26 mb / CPU 0.33% (great !)
    When I publish my audio/video via NetStream : RAM 42 mb / CPU 64%
When I publish AND receive an audio/video NetStream : RAM 48 mb / CPU 94%
By the way, my phone is getting hot...
I know that this could be done without such performance problems on Android. The proof : http://coenraets.org/blog/2010/07/video-chat-for-android-in-30-lines-of-code/
Yes, LCCS is use here by C. Coenraets, but LCCS is nothing but a NetConnection/NetStream and a RTMFP solution... So what am i doing wrong ? Any help would be very appreciated.

Ok my microphone and camera settings were bad.
I comment out these lines :
                                                      microphone.codec = SoundCodec.SPEEX;
                                                      microphone.framesPerPacket = 1;
                                                      microphone.setSilenceLevel(0, 3000);
                                                      microphone.gain = 100;
                                                      microphone.rate = 22;
    //camera.setMode (640, 480, 15, true);
                                                      //camera.setQuality (15000, 0); // 30000, 0 (adobe settings)
Then the application works better, but still use CPU at 80-90% after a while... And finish to crash. Any idea ?
