Reliable update of Web Content in Overlays

Hi,
whenever I'm creating Web Content Overlays in Folios I stumble about the problem, that they wont update on the DPS Servers. So if I change, let's say the CSS of the embedded Web-Content, save the .CSS, the InDesign File and update the Article via FolioBuilder sometimes the content stays the same when I update via Adobe Viewer on iPad.
My workaround now: Create a different HTML file in a different folder and point to that new folder/file from the Web Content Overlay. But this is really ugly and stops me from developing faster.
Any idea?

If you are testing on iOS then this is unfortunately a bug in iOS, not a bug in DPS. The operating system is caching the files even after we update them and feeding the cached content to the web overlay

  • DPS and Coldfusion in Web content Folio Overlay

InDesign CS6 with DPS on a Mac.  I create a frame and insert a Folio Overlay Web Content to access a Coldfusion Website page.   I get an error message that the asset cannot be located.  I tried redirecting the page using a . html page.  Same result.  Tried redirecting using .htm only and that appeared to work.  Is there some way I can use DPS Folio to access a Coldfusion page inside of the Web Content Overlay?

    Thanks Bob.
Okay, so here are the steps I'm taking:
    1. Go to YouTube
    2. Copy embed code
    3. Go to InDesign
    4. Paste embed code
This creates a web content area with the video embeded. So the user can click play on the video once it loads and can then click full screen on the video controls.
What I'm trying to do is have a button on my page which links to a full screen view of the YouTube video so when the page loads the video doesn't load but when the user clicks the button it would then load the YouTube video full screen. I'm looking for the same functionality that is possible were I to embed an mp4 straight into my document, hide it, and then create a button that plays the video in full screen mode.
    Is the above possible?
    Thanks.

  • So last week... iMac stuck in the past, refuses to update web content!

    Hello,
I posted a couple of questions elsewhere but realize now they may be related.
Since I installed OS 10.4.10, my iMac has been having problems updating some web pages and widget content.
For example, the Wimbledon.org home page is stuck on "Day 2 - Tuesday June 26" every time I open it using either Safari 3.0.2 or Firefox 2.0.0.4 (the same page on other computers normally shows today's date). Reloading does not help. More generally, for news sites, I need to constantly reload almost every page to get recent content, otherwise, it usually shows results from my last visit.
Also, my Apple Weather widget is giving me weather from last Friday or even earlier. I can check new cities with up-to-date forecast, but checking my regular cities like New York, NY continuously returns weather info and forecast from last week.
This sounds like a cache issue, so here is what I have done so far:
    - Empty all caches (system, internet, kernel, dashboard, etc...) using Onyx as well as manually trashing folders
    - Running the maintenance scripts
    - Repair permissions and verify disks: all OK
    - De-installing Safari 3.0.2 and reinstalling it (though the issue also affects Firefox)
    - Deinstalling and reinstalling the Weather widget
    - Refresh all windows and widgets using command-R or shift-click reload.
    - Trashing preferences for Safari and widgets
Nothing helped. Moreover, I have no third party extension on Safari.
The exact same configuration on another computer (MacBook) seems to work fine now, though the first two days after OS 10.4.10 installation had some of the issues described above.
It looks like my computer does not want to age and refuses to update some web content!
Any suggestions, other than what I have already done? Should I try reverting to OS 10.4.9 or is there a fix?
    Thanks,
    Sacha

Hi Sacha - there have been a lot of problems after updating to 10.4.10, a reliable fix is to perform an Archive and Install and then use the 10.4.9 combo updater to revert to 10.4.9.
This generally fixes all problems, and is pretty painless to do.

  • Typekit font not displaying in iPad DPS app (created by Indesign) in Web Content (Edge Animate)

I think I have tried every permutation to make this work, but I am probably missing something.
I am creating a single DPS iPad app with InDesign, and I am using a Typekit font throughout.  So far so good.
I have created an Edge Animate project using the same Typekit font.  In preview mode, it is fine as well.
However, when I place the Edge Animate project into a frame in InDesign and use the Web Content Folio Overlay (regardless of whether I use the .oam file or link directly .html output published by Animate), the Typekit font will not show up in the Edge Animate portion of the DPS app and will instead use a fallback font.
Can anyone suggest a way to make Typekit fonts in Edge Animate work when embedded in a DPS app?  (For what it's worth, I have the same problem when embedding html output from Tumult Hype, so it seems unlikely that this is an issue with Edge Animate at all and probably has more to do with something in the way the DPS app is dealing with embedded html content.)
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Believe me, I understand the pain. Unfortunately there's only so much we can do at Adobe as the EULAs provided by the foundries for their respective fonts are very explicit in where you can and can not use them.
For example, packaging an InDeisgn file and sending it off for pre-press with the fonts included in the package is in direct violation of most font EULAs. In a studio environment, you're only allowed to have a font installed on n number of computers and need to have multiple licenses to accomidate >n number of seats. When creating a PDF, fonts explicitly have to be subsetted before embedding into the PDF.
That's just to paint a picture of the fragile state of using fonts in print, usage in digital mediums is just another bee in your bonnet when it comes to considering when you can and cannot use a font.
Services like Typekit Desktop are trying to make this easier by removing a lot of those pain and condierations for you, by blanketing all these fonts under a single license you're free to use for print and the web. There's still some gotchyas, but we're aiming to greatly reduce how much you have to think about it where we can.
So yes there's a bit of education when it comes to mixing embedded HTML content/fonts with DPS, but at least there's options

  • Short of dismantling and recreating a page how do i find out whats causing [Error: Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay]

    Hi,
i received an indesign file to include in a folio that had links to the creators desktop where they had the assets for the web content overlay. When i try to update the folio i get the error message:
    "Content generation error.
[Error: Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay]"
    Which is fair enough.
The problem is, i have gone through and changed all URLs that I can see, but there is one somewhere, that I just can't find.
Is there a way to get a list of all web content overlays in a particular file? otherwise i will need to recreate the whole page again, and it has some pretty complex interactions which i rather wouldn't do.
I also cannot ask the original doc creator to just change the links as i'm sure he'll have the same issues as me, at not being able to track down the erroneous link.
The problem I have with DPS is that its not very transparent. you'll have to click on everything, and into every group to see what actions are on it, which can be extremely time consuming and frustrating when complex interactions are included.
thanks in advance for any assistance

I’ve found watching the process helpful to narrow down the page.
Working off a duplicate of the file, delete one layer at a time until you figure out what layer the problem is on.
From there it’s a bit easier to narrow down.

  • Web Content Overlay Link to the HTML Resources

    Hi guys,
Does anyone know what should go inside of "URL or File" field for the Web Content overlay if I need file from the HTMLResources.zip?
DPS documentation is very unclear/confusing (e.g. there is no ".html" at the end):
For the file inside of HTMLResources.zip with this path:
    HTMLResources.zip/Cartoons/train1.html
    Documentation (https://helpx.adobe.com/digital-publishing-suite/help/hyperlink-overlays.html#link_to_asse ts_in_the_html_resources_folder) has:
Web Content overlays are nested two levels deeper than an HTML article. Example:
    <a href=”../../../HTMLResources/Cartoons/train1”>See Train Cartoon Gallery</a>
I'm getting an error "File URL for web content is missing or does not exist" if I enter this inside of the "URL or File" field:
    ../../../HTMLResources/Cartoons/train1
    Thank you for your help,
    Gennady

    Thank you, joev and Bob,
Update to the text below: I just realized that documentation explains how to call some file from the HTML content of the Web Content Overlay, not how to get the HTML content inside the Web Content Overlay. I can probably do redirect to the train1.html from plain HTML code inserted into Web Content Overlay. So there is no way to use link to the file as for the http://webServerPath/Cartoons/train1.html?
We have 1 html file that uses 1 image file, both files inside the folder inside HTMLResources.zip and I need to display that html, so:
    HTMLResources.zip/Cartoons/train1.html
    HTMLResources.zip/Cartoons/train1.png - referenced inside train1.html
If I use http URL, e.g.
    http://webServerPath/Cartoons/train1.html
then everything works, if I try to set that URL to the HTMLResources:
    ../../../HTMLResources/Cartoons/train1
    or
    ../../../HTMLResources/Cartoons/train1.html
I'm getting an error, even documentation explains what link should be used.
Workaround when we just use the local HTML folder also works.
    Thank you!

  • Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay, ERROR!!!!!!

    Hello All,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this error, I was working on my indesign file and was testing it out locally, then I went on to upload my file and I got prompt to install a new version of the Folio panel which I did, now every time I try to upload my file I get this "ERROR: Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay", I've searched around and have not come up with an answer. Not sure if its a bug on the new update or what. I tried some troubleshooting which this is what i did. I copied my first page of my document onto a different file and tried to upload one page and then i got the error but then I deleted the images and just left one text box and it uploaded my file without any issues, strange huh. Any ideas????

I was having the same problem with both hyperlinks and buttons in one particular file -- "Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay." It seems to only be a problem in files where I had a link or button previously, and then deleted the object. When I create a new object and create a link or button, it's as though the old link is still lingering somewhere in the file! However, none of the old links is listed in the hyperlinks panel before I create a new one.
This occurred while I was teaching a DPS class, using the Adobe courseware (sight unseen by any proofreader, I believe). In one of the exercise files, the steps for the student to create hyperlinks and buttons had already been done, so I deleted the hyperlinks. (I think I deleted the text frames that contained them, but I'm not sure.) I never had a problem with it UNTIL I downloaded the Overlay Creator/Folio Builder dated June 19 (v21, I think).
In the same file, I also had problems with a NAVTO link, . I don't think there were any NAVTO links in any earlier version of the file, at least none that I ever created or deleted.
I've coded HTML since the days when the only available tool was Notepad, so I'm sure that I used correct URLs (and none redirected). Even the URLs in the deleted objects were correct; I only deleted them so the exercise could be done again.

  • Capabilities of web content overlay?

I have a question about what an iPad2/3 is capable of when running content through the web content overlay. I'm assuming this is a quick 'yes', but we wanted to be sure before going ahead on a project.
When loading a page through the WCO, can it run HTML5 with Java objects? Are there certain objects that won't run on an iPad? (Flash, etc.) Basically we have a straightforward app but as an update we want to add a new section where the user can drag/move shapes on the page. Ideally we'd like the position of those shapes to be trackable data but that's a whole other ball game. Is Java what we "should" be using to accomplish this?
My apologies for any horrible misuse of nomenclature, we're print people that also do basic DPS apps as an extension. Thank you!

Java objects? You cannot load Java on an iOS device. This plugin is not installed on iOS Safari.
Flash also won't run on iOS devices, you are simply limited to: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Video (mp4/h.264), Audio(mp3).

  • Why am I getting the flag Invalid URL for web content overlay when making scrolling panel in Indesig

Why am I getting the flag 'Invalid URL for web content overlay" when making scrolling panel in Indesign? Iam making additions to existing articles but the problem is new. The articles were originally made using CS and now I am on CC, which I have just uninstalled and re installed, no difference, can anyone help please? Steve

Hi Bob, thankyou very much for coming back on this. The flag is coming up towards the end of the preview process on desk top. I have made dozens if not hundreds on my two published apps on the app store, but have not done an update for nearly a year, in which time I have needed a refresher, and as usual went to Lynda. In this case I have followed to the letter your DPS course, which is great, and I found the process of making the scrolling panels somewhat easier than when I started 2-3years ago. Initially I was mystified that the flag talked about url and web content, but just put it down to something I had missed in recent improvements in CC.
I tried over and over, but always got the same result. I thought at one point it might be because the content of my slide was copy and photo, so for a test I deleted the photo. Same result, and many of my existing slides are copy and picture.
I also uninstalled Indesign CC and reinstalled in case of corrupted content, I also copied to IDML and relaunch, same problem. I am sure I have made the scrolling content as instructed, The one thing I havn't done is trash my preferences, if you think that would be a good Idea could you please direct me to some content at Lynda on how to do it in CC. Many thanks, Steve

  • MP4 Video throwing error: Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay

Converted a 15 second flv video to the following using Handbrake:
    mp4
    H.264 codec
"Placed" mp4 file into my article
Set Autoplay= On and 0.125s delay
Try to preview via InDesign a get the error: Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay
Try to update my article via Folio Builder and I get the same error.

It seems that you "placed" your video into the frame selected as Web Content in Folio Overlays Panel.
    Delete that frame.
Place (in the normal InDesign way, not"place") your mp4 file onto the page.
Adjust the size of the frame to your video measurements.
Look at the Folio Overlays Panel. Your placed file should appear ther as Video Overlay.
Set your options and you are done.

  • How to make a VR html file autoplay via the Web Content overlay

    Hello,
We have created a VR using Object2VR and have loaded the .html file via the Web Content Overlay panel in InDesign CS5.5.
We want this VR to play automatically on page load, so we have checked the box 'aut play' in the Web Content overlay panel, but it won't play automatically.
We've tried switching the auto play off in Object 2VR and switching it on in the Web Content overlay and vice versa and also with both on, but still we cannot get it to autoplay.
Any suggestions? Is this a bug?
    thanks,
    AG

DPS is no longer supported in 5.5 you need Indesign 6 or Creative Cloud.
Set you auto play delay for the web overlay to something other than zero seconds, 0.125 works, if it is set to zero seconds. Leave the auto play enabled for the VR.

  • Invalid Url for Web Content Overlay

I am constantly getting this error when I try to upload a page with a web content overlay -- i even get thi smessage if i try to upload http://google.com.
    sg

This link is likely being redirected, and redirects aren't allowed in Web Content overlays. For example, http://www.google.com will work, but http://google.com won't. Check the URL on a mobile device. A lot of sites get redirected to the mobile version:  http://twitter.com becomes http://mobile.twitter.com.

  • Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay. Help?

I am doing a french tranlation to an existing folio app that someone else created.
There is one page in my folio that is comprised of garbage and a trash can. You touch the garbage and drag it into the trash, and things change, etc.
I have an index.html file and a bunch of other images.
I can't even successfully add the article to my folio, I get this warning: Content Generator Error. Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay.
Can you walk me through how to get this to work?
Attached is a screen shot of my file structure...

When you specify the .html file, all the content in that folder is uploaded automatically. Here's an article about Web Content overlays:

  • Web Content overlay error

Not sure why I am getting this error all of a sudden, but when I try to create a Web Content overlay by linking to a local html file I am getting a "Scrip Alert: Invalid URL for Web Content Overlay".
This isn't making any sense to me. A few days ago I successfully created a folio while creating a Web Content overlay with a local file and now this morning I am trying to link to the same html file the exact same way and it's not working.
I am using InDesign CS 5.5 on Windows 7 64-bit. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Figured it out! totally by mistake, there had been an object that was pasted into the file that was filled with a PMS color. Once I converted that PMS color to an RGB process color that took care of the script error.
    weird!

  • Web Content Overlay - iFrame Width Issue

I'm adding a web content overlay in one of my articles. I've created and hosted a webpage that contains an iFrame of a Google Form.
When I select my text frame in the article, apply the Web Content Overlay option, add the URL, and load/test the folio on my iPad, the iFrame width I set in my html file isn't taking effect. The web overlay isn't displaying (and wrapping the text and form) according to the width that I specified in the html file. Testing the html file in different browsers on my desktop shows a change in width, but not so on the web content overlay frame in my article. Vertical scrolling is working just fine but I'd like to have a narrower width for the form so that a user only scrolls vertically; instead of having to scroll left/right to read more information on the form.
I've tried editing the iFrame width in the code: inside the iframe element, adding a div wrapper, defining a table width... No adjustments in the html seem to be rendering correctly on iPad.
And I'm not a huge fan of the Web Content Overlay's option of Adjusting content to fit the frame since it makes the form very small.
I'm running on CS5.5; I haven't tested the direct embed into
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Try to paste the code directly into InDesign. Sometimes it creates better results than just using a web overlay. I'm also dealing with some similar problem trying to get SoundCloud into the document.
