Reloading "Classic"/OS9 into Tiger 10.4.11

I had such quick success with my first question, I'll ask another.
The computer is a 1GHz G4 MDD. It came to me with OS X 10.4.11 installed. However the previous owner had removed "Classic"/OS 9 (which I would like to use) and the restore disks sent with the computer do not appear to work properly. The OS 9 disk sent is a OS 9.2.1 update disk.
I also own a 500 MHz G3 iBook. This computer came with OS X 10.4 and "classic/OS 9 installed.
With "classic"/OS 9 residing on an external USB hard disk drive.
I thought it would be simple to connect the external drive to the G4 and copy the "classic"/OS 9 software over to the G4. NOT SO!
The folders AND files for "classic"/OS 9 have become "scrambled" and now neither the G3 nor the G4 will start up "classic"/OS 9.
What I am asking is:
What folders containing what files are necessary on a hard drive to have a
functioning OS 9 ? OS X 10.4 still works on the G4 & G3.
Additionally -- In one folder (the original folder), the "system" file is represented by a computer icon titled "system", when I copied this file to the other drive it showed up as a sheet of paper icon with the title "system." The "get info" request returns the same answer for each file. But I suspect the sheet of paper file is not functional.
Please tell me how to unscramble the files and folders so as to retrieve "classic"/OS 9 and to get it up and running on both the G3 and the G4.
Willing to learn from my mistakes.

There were a number of icons on the G3 external USB drive I was trying to move to the G4 internal drive. These were the ones I believed would transfer "classic"/OS 9 to the G4 drive.
Three of the icons were a computer with a double Mac face set into the front of the computer. One was named Classic and in the _get info_ window its kind was finder document. The second had the same icon as the first but was named _Classic Support_ and in the get info window its kind was finder. The third icon was the same as the other two but was named _Classic Support UI_ and in the get info window is kind was _ProxyApp Document_.
Two of these icons transferred over to the G4 drive OK but the icon named Classic transferred over as a _sheet of paper_ icon named Classic with the the same get info kind, _finder document_.
None of these icons are shown as Alias. However, one icon that transferred over to the G4 shown as a folder and named Desktop (Mac OS 9) is shown as a Alias.
FW drive ???
How can I get the Computer icon named Classic to transfer to the G4 drive as a Computer icon and NOT a sheet of paper icon ?

You will need to buy a copy on ebay, etc. 9.x.  I think 9.2.2 was the last.  Be sure it is the full install cd.
You will need to find a machine that is bootable with 9.x.  All the iMac g3's boot with 9.x.
You can then copoy over the system folder to any PPC running Tiger or earlier x to run in classic environment.

  • Why can't I boot into Tiger?

When I try to boot into Tiger the grey screen appears with the never ending idle circle twidling away looking for an OS to boot into.
    I've tried:
-Holding "c" while booting - works about every 8 times if that.
-Holding "option" while booting - works about every 5 times if that.
-System Preferences - OSX is chosen the boot drive.

You wrote: "Thanks Doc, but unfortunately this Sonnet brand pci adapter card is only compatible with OS9. If I take the card out, the Mac will only recognize 130 out of the 320 gigs of the internal drive."I think you need to check this with Sonnet. What card did you buy?
Is your card listed on the Sonnet Tiger Compatibility page? If so, then Mac OS 9 should not be required. See also the Mac OS X Compatibility Update page. Depending on how you acquired the card (purchased new vs. second hand), it may need a firmware update for "large drive suport." Again, I recommend you contact Sonnet if any of the information on their Web site is unclear.

  • Classic Install in Tiger

I just had to re-install Tiger - first time that it wasn't done as an update. It surprised me that it didn't include a copy of OS 9.2.2. Where can I get a copy of 9.2.2 to load into Tiger and how do I get it to operate as Classic and only open when I need it to handle a legacy application?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Mac OS 9 and Classic are not the same thing. Unfortunately if something is said to work in Mac OS 9 only as hardware, it may not always work in Mac OS X. Mac OS X has what is called a Classic environment that allows most applications to work that work in 9, but unfortunately does not have full Mac OS 9 hardware support. For hardware that doesn't work in the Classic environment, you need an older Mac that is able to boot into Mac OS 9. Mac OS X only booting started being the standard back in January 2003, and by July 2004, no more new Macs were available that could boot into Mac OS 9, though many used and refurbished Macs are still available that can.
Now it is possible that this camera may be using an antiquated codec on its AVIs which only works on Mac OS 9's Quicktime. I say antiquated, since the company that makes them no longer exists, though Apple does have them available for download on its website. That'll work in Classic if you install the Quicktime for Mac OS 9 Indeo Codecs, For more about that, see these articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60366
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30904
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30903
Many cameras which don't work in iPhoto may work in Image Capture.
And if the camera has a solid state media, there are card readers designed for Mac OS X that will read most all solid state media. So if you know the type of media that the camera uses, find yourself a card reader, and you won't need to use Classic at all or boot into Mac OS 9 to at least get its data onto your computer. So tell me which model Casio you have, as there is more than one model that is 5 Megapixel that has the Exilim label? I can look up some info on the internet if you like and see if there are any easier ways to use this camera, or if it doesn't have any of the above limitations.

  • How to get Leopard's new visualizers into Tiger?

Leopard's version of iTunes has some great extra visualizers like Jelly and Stix.
I still run iTunes on my old mac which won't take a leopard upgrade. Does anyone know if it's possible to get these new visualizers into Tiger somehow?

Leopard keeps its visualizers in /System/Library/Compositions/
Tiger, I believe, keeps it in /(yourusername)/Library/Compositions
find the one you like from leopard and copy it to tiger and see if itunes recognizes it. you'll have to restart itunes if it was already open.
they are all quartz compositions (.qtz), and since quartz composer got an upgrade with leopard i'd say you're lucky if any work.

  • Combining all classical albums into one folder

can i combine my 11 classical albums into one folder or category to remove clutter in my music library?

    mark4440,
As a general rule, once music is in your iTunes library, it is best not to rename or move any of their files or folders. iTunes loses track of the files when you do that.
As noted from time to time on this forum, the basic iTunes structure of album/artist/song does not really suit classical music that well. Many folks like to edit the artist field to include the composer so that they can see the composer on the iPod.
Does your library include non-classical as well as classical music? If so, make sure you have filled out the "genre" for each of your classical pieces. To do that, right-click on the song, "Get Info," select the genre field, then "OK.". Also make sure that Genre is visible in your iTunes music view (View > Options if you need to adjust). You can also create a smart playlist, keying on genre, that includes only your classical music.

My Classic OS9 applications will not open, and I cannot find the classic OS9 application showing in the preferences window.I tried installing Classic OS9 on a disc I had from another computer but maybe it was the wrong disc

Here is apple's take on the subject.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929
    Try this:
    1) on your eMac update the machine to 9.2.2
-- ( it needs to be 9.2.2 I think & do not know if you can update to 9.2.2
on Mac OS X.  I think you can update on X, but not 100% sure. )
    2) get a flash drive
    3) format to flashdrive to Mac OS extended
-- ( guess you could use journaled.  )
-- ( need to perserve resource forks.)
    4) copy the folder
         System Folder
    to the flash drive.
-- ( this is the mac os 9 folder.  Only the Max OS X will/may have the 9 on the folder. )
-- ( do not move it on emac like to the desktop etc. )
    5) copy to your iMac.
    6) Bless classic folder.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1929 for how.
Let me know how it goes.  Could try it out since I have Classi running in a partition on this machine.

  • Regarding Reloading of Data Into The Cube

    Hi All,
I have a situation where I have to reload the data into the InfoCube. The InfoCube is already having Full Load and Deltas for a period of 1 month. Now if I do a full load will I get the data as of today and can I do deltas tomorrow onwards after doing an Init???
Should I have to delete the Data from Delta Queue in Source System (RSA7)???
    Please clarify me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Jay

    Hi,
if you already have intialisations on the cube you can do a repair ful load. which will bring all the data and you can continue using the delta functionality from tomorrow.
    hope this helps.

  • How do I change leopard emlx into tiger emlx?

Had to salvage everything from time machine.
I have Tiger up and running (yeah!) However, old sent emails in leopard are not readable (either on a leopard machine or a tiger machine)
(library>mail>mailboxes>new folder> messages> reboot mail, rebuild the messages folder is greyed out)
So, I'm looking for a way to downgrade the Leopard email so I can convert it all to an mbox- which I know I can do in Tiger.
    All suggestions welcome.
    Ziska

    Hi Ziska,
I think the only way you're going to be able to do that is with another eMail client, like...
Eudora, (can Import your Mail from Mail)...
    http://www.eudora.com/download/
    Maybe Thunderbird...
    http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
Once imported into that/those, Import into Tiger's Mail.
    Or possibly...

  • Tiger Upgrade from Panther - iTunes, Classic OS9 Issues

I just upgraded, doing an erase + install, from Panther to Tiger. Before upgrading I made a successful bootable copy of my PowerBook on my Fire Wire external 160 gig drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. Also, on that drive, I have a full, probably not bootable, backup of my PB from a few days before using a “sudo ditto –X –RsrcFrk {source drive} {target drive}” command that I’ve been using for years after reading about it in a Mac magazine(that is not the actual command, btw – I just don’t have it in front of me at the moment).
After the upgrade, I used Migration Assistant to bring over applications and settings. It found the cloned copy of my hard drive as another macintosh computer. One category that Migration Assistant did not bring over were Other Files that were kept on my external drive. I figured that those were just the large document files I generally keep on that external drive so as not to clutter up my smaller PowerBook drive. I have two questions that I have not been able to find exact answers to online:
*-How can I get my OS9 Classic apps working?* Now Contact is the main application I still use along with an Appleworks file or two. I see kind of conflicting information on the web as to how to install/activate OS9. Can I use the upgrade DVD for Tiger? Do I need to use my original Panther disk?
*-Can I get my iTunes Library back the way it was?* I’m big on podcasts and podcast subscriptions, and while the podcasts came over, the subscriptions did not, and what did come over is not organized well. There is no “Podcast” playlist over on the left side of the iTunes window. Also, none of my radio stations came over. I don’t have a lot of music in general, The few songs I’ve purchased from iTunes did not make it over. Non DRM stuff did make it over. Overall, I have about 6.5 gigs worth of iTunes material. Now, I don’t think I had the latest iTunes version installed in Panther – I’m not sure but I could check, I assume, by going into one of the backups.
Any advice or links to articles/advice would be much appreciated. Please let me know if I should post this on a more direct iTunes and OS9 board.
    Thank you.

You will need to reinstall OS 9 to get Classic working. It isn't installed as part of OS X. If your PB cannot boot OS 9 then you will need to install the special OS 9 version that was included with the computer's original Software Restore discs. AppleWorks is a separate program from Apple and will need to be reinstalled. In order to use Classic you will need OS 9.1 or later.
You might consider re-copying all your file folders from your backups since it appears you did not do a complete migration. Here's what you need to transfer:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

  • Copy Tiger Classic Support into Leopard Possible?

I tried asking this in Leopard's pre-release forum and the responses were, shall we say "less than helpful."
Before you answer (noting that this is the "Classic Environment" discussion group), I am well aware OS 9 is dead (duh), I have an expensive CAD program that I would have to take out a small business loan to upgrade to the current, OS X compatible, version. Classic is the answer I can afford right now. The business loan will come in the future when I upgrade to a Macintel (my PowerBook can handle everything I throw it, thank you very much, and doesn't need replacing).
Please don't tell how dead OS 9 is and how I should move on (I have, with the only this exception). It is insulting to me and a waste of time for you. Please don't tell me about rebooting into a Tiger partition, I already know about this and it is inconvenient for my work flow. This is also not a discussion on the relative merits of Leopard over Tiger or Apple's decision making process.
On to my question: Is it possible to copy the TruBlueEnvironme (I'm not talking about the OS 9 system folder, that's just drag and drop), blued(?) and it's associated PreferencePanes, Menu Extras, etc. from Tiger into Leopard and have Classic work? Or did Apple do something else behind the scenes at the kernel/UNIX level that makes this impossible?
Thanks in advance (and for staying on topic).

Unfortunately no. Low cost CAD software is so crude as to be unusable.
"Engineering" software lives in it's own special "reality." If you haven't worked with software in this area you'd probably be surprised to learn engineering software costs between 4x to 10x the amount of software in any other area costs with equivalent level of technology or sophistication. The excuse is always that the end users has more to gain financially when they use engineering software over other types of software. Which, of course, doesn't hold up when you consider that advertising firms can make tens of millions of dollars making an ad campaign using Photoshop. Using low cost CAD software is kinda like using textedit to do a sophisticated, high end layout that would normally only be done in InDesign.
The CAD software in question is extremely well done and very Mac friendly (and I still recommend it others). It started off a Mac app from a small, family run business. It was so good, it became the standard for "low cost" architectural software (on any platform). At the time Apple (and this CAD company) switched to OS X, they got bought by a German company that sold very expensive architectural software. When they took over, the price went from $495 to $795 (depending on the packages you bought) with $50 to $100 upgrades, to $1200 to $2000, per seat (unlike "standard" apps, you can't use one license on both your desktop and your laptop) with $445 upgrades (and then, only from the immediately proceeding version). In our two man, family run business, that would cost us $2900 to get "two seats" with the same functionality as we have now.
P.S. To get a feel for the weird little world engineers live in: I went to a sales seminar for a new Windows engineering software package that did 3D modeling back in 1995. The one feature that totally blew away the engineers (and the sales team for that matter) wasn't the photo-realism of the renderings, the ease with which the models could be produced, or the rendering speed; it was the fact that you could copy and pasted data and images between programs in the suite. 11 years behind the times and they charged an arm a leg for it.

  • Installing Classic Mode on Tiger, DVDs, emulators

I want to install classic mode on a Mac running OS 10.4 (Power PC processor). We have DVDs for three different kinds of Mac of the same generation, but none of them come with the extra tools CD/DVD that is mentioned in Apple's instructions and in other posts as containing OS 9. The install DVDs are the Swiss (German) version. Is the third DVD only in the US version?
We have 9.0 CDs for two Power Mac G4s, plus one G4 computer that's broken, and one that's alive and well, running 9.2. Is there a way I could lift the system folder from this computer, copy it onto the hard disk on the 10.4 computer, and "bless" it, or is more required than the system fold for classic mode to run under Tiger? I'm wondering whether it's possible to install an emulator like Sheepshaver, since I could start with 9.0 and upgrade that to 9.2, and then transfer the necessary files (system folder plus ...?) to use the built-in classic environment.
Any help would be much appreciated.

You don't say exactly what computers are involved which places us at a disadvantage in helping you.
If you have a copy of OS 9.1 or greater on a computer you can simply copy the whole System Folder to a PPC running Tiger and set it up to be Classic.  Put it at the root level next to OSX's "System".  If you actually want to boot to OS9, that's where knowing the details of the computers and operating systems involved is essential.
Technically, system installations can be machine specific, but I think for OS9, and especially when used as Classic, this isn't as much an issue.  Classic isn't in charge of any hardware anyway.  Some people may post saying, "Oh, it absolutely must be installed correctly," but frankly I have copied OS9.2.2 from computer to computer as I worked my way through models and had it work on any model that supports OS9, and that was for booting.
If all you have are installer versions of OS9 on optical that is where you may run into trouble and may ultimately end up needing copies of the original discs (which likely are no longer available).  You will have to get the computer to boot to the installer disc in order to get it to actually put a usuable copy of OS9 on the computer.  Again, this is where knowing the exact disc versions and exact computer specifications is important.

  • Unable to restore OS9 on Tiger

I reformatted a G4 tower and installed Tiger. OS9 did NOT install and I need it. I have the original restore disks but when I run the OS9 restore, I bump into a problem.
It goes through the install process but right before it installs, it gets to a screen that request that I put the disk with a solid circle and an outlined circle into the cd/dvd drive. It is requesting the same disk that is already in there. What's up?
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks -Brett

If you have the original Restore - not install - OS 9 disk, you should be able to use X Disk Utility to open the coded archive, then drag copy the System Folder from within that onto the hard drive.
    Please note:
You can do that only with the System Folder from within the coded archive, not the one that boots the CD; that's specially designed to run only from a locked CD.
You can use a 9 System Folder from a machine-specific installer for Classic over X on any Mac, but for pure, bootable 9 only on the model it was designed for
Technically you could try the same trick with a 9 Install disk, but all the components are loose in one part of the coded archive and you'd have to sort them into the right folders entirely by hand…
