Reloading mac os 10.4

Since i do have a pc (which is still a gutter full of leaves all the time) i reload it every month just so its clean and practciuly freash for the first day. Would doing this with my mac ,which has never been reloaded only updated from pervious updates, be a good thing just once every 3 months? Backup is never a problem for me so im wondering if i should do it just to get some old installtions and sometimes file build up from the internet deleted.

Hi toothierwolf,
reinstalling the system is completely unnecessary with MacOS X. I still have the same system running since 4 years. Just upgraded it from 10.1. all the way up to 10.4. Make regular backups and do not forget some regular system maintenance: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance.

  • Do I need to reload Mac OS X?

Sorry if this is a stupid question:
When I set up my laptop I think that OS X didn't install properly as I am missing some random programs such as Keychain, Comic Life etc and my iPhoto freezes fairly often.
A friend told me to simply reload mac OS X, however I am paranoid that in the process I will lose files, such as music or photos, as these programs will be reinstalled?
Am I worrying about nothing and should I just go ahead and reinstall it?

First, it is always better to backup your files before the restore of the OS.
You can do the archive and install rather than erase and install

  • Trying to reload Mac OS X, but keep getting restart in 4 languages

I am trying to sell my 2010 Mac book Pro 15". it has 10.6 right now, but had 10.5 when bought. I am trying to reformat it so that I can sell it, but when I restart with the install DVD I keep getting the message to restart in 4 languages. I have tried restarting with the DVD in and restarting from the DVD's option when you run it while the computer is on. I have also tried holding c when I restart. All roads lead to the same place. Please help!

It's because your using the 10.5 disk and the firmware has been changed to reject that disk from booting, you need to use the 10.6 disk.
Hold the c or option key down and boot off the 10.6 disk.
If you need to eject the 10.5 disk, hold the option key down while booting, select the 10.5 disk by clicking on the disk icon and pressing eject on the keyboard, insert the 10.6 disk and wait, then click the arrow to boot off the 10.6 disk.
If the 10.6 disk won't boot, try cleaning the bottom with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to polish, if it doesn't work you can order a new 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online.
The original is what doesn't work. I just tried SL. all it did was install, but I wanted the option to clear out the HD.
While your booted of the 10.6 disk and looking at the installer, there is a menu at top called Utilities, under that is Disk Utility, use that to select your entire boot drive on the far left, it will have the drive makers name and size,
Then click Erase > Security Option > Zero All Data (good enough, takes some time) or 7x overwrite (longer, stronger) and let it complete.  (all data is destroyed and not recoverable)
When finished quit and install 10.6 from the installer menu. When the machine reboots, it will have the "Welcome" video, just press the power button down hard and that will shut the machine and leave it like that for the next owner.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

  • I'm selling my macbook so I have formated the hard drive and I am trying to reload mac os snow leopard 10.6 but it keeps freezing?

    Can anyone help?

    Try a restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Accidently reloaded Mac OSX Software and it took up a lot of memory. Help!

How can I get the memory back?
    Message was edited by: GamingGod64

Oh. How do you do that accidentally? To reinstall from the DVD you have to boot from it.
You have only one option. Erase the drive and reinstall everything from scratch. You cannot simply reinstall OS X over OS X. I'm puzzled as to how you were even able to do that since the installer has safeguards.
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Proceed until you get to the screen where you select a Destination. Select your hard drive then click on the Options button. Select Erase and Install then click on the OK button. Complete the installation. After OS X has been installed and you complete the Startup Assistant you will see the Desktop. From the Installer Disc double-click on the Install Pre-Bundled Software to install all the additional software that came with your computer.

  • Can't mount iPhone in iTunes after reload of Mac OS-X 10.4.10

Had to reload Mac Tiger yesterday and run Software Update several times.
Running 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.4.2 -- Just checked to be sure!
It looks like something needed was not loaded.
iPhoto sees the iPhone just fine... its just iTunes that is blind and I really need to sync!
    Any ideas?

    The cure!
After reinstalling your Mac OSX (and running everything from Software Update),
    (1) you must download iTunes,
    (2) delete the current iTunes app,
    (3) install the fresh version of iTunes
    (4) restart Mac OSX
My iPhone is now happily refreshed with new contacts and calendars and ringtones, Oh My!
Thank you AppleCare for working through this with me...

  • Connecting iPod to a reformatted Mac

I recently erased everything and reloaded Mac OS X Tiger on my Mac, and I was wondering if the iPod (80 GB, fifth gen.) that I used to sync on that Mac before reinstalling Tiger, would still be able to sync from that Mac like before, or would it erase everything from my iPod?

If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Mac OS x/ finder/ hard drive/ start up.... problems PLEASE HELP URGENT!!

    Right
firstly my finder icon on the dock the little triangle to show it on disapers. meaning all the icons on the desktop disapear! Then i restart to get them back but it loads the grey screen then goes to blue and nothing else. So i restart but hold down the ALT key to see drives and i calls my HD EMI drive or something so i boot from Backup cd 1 and have to reload Mac OS x Again for the second time today! what is going on and how can i fix it?

    Michael,
    First,Back up all important files.Then...
Run Apple Hardware Test from OS X Install Disk #1.
If it reports any problems, believe it and call AppleCare to have MacBook repaired.
If AHT reports "No problems found",I'd recommend an Erase and Install of OS X.
Let us know the outcome either way.

  • Entire Mac slows down every day, especially if more than one user logged in

Mac runs fine at the start of each day (after turning it on), but slows down by evening. iPhoto is typically at a crawl at that point, and I can't have more than one user logged in at a time, or the whole system takes forever to do anything. I've restarted, repaired disk, repaired disk permissions, run Cocktail, checked for viruses (VirusBarrier). It's easy to restore normal speed with these moves, but same problem every day. I have 24 GB left on this hard drive--is that too little?
Should I try erasing hard drive and restoring from Time Machine? Should I reload Mac OS X from discs?
    Advice much appreciated. Thanks.

    you do the math
    this will help:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
    1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
    2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

  • Hard drive not recognized after a brand new replacement put in 2 weeks ago!

Basically, my MBP was having the symptoms of needed a new hard drive. It was taking abnormal amounts to think and load thinks when it started up (only part of the time). I cleared all the software off of it and reloaded Mac OS just to be sure it wasnt a software issue. Apple took my computer and replaced the hard drive about 2 weeks ago (90gb, 7200 rpm). By the way the MBP is a C2D with 2 gb ram.
Immediately after getting my computer back it seemed to work fine. It has been about a week and a half since I got it back and last night trouble started. First, it wouldnt boot up all the time (id get the flashing question mark on the folder). I checked startup disk and booted it that way, no results. When it did start up, it would lock up shortly after when using applications such as safari. I then booted it to the system disk and performed the first aid functions on the disk... no results. And now, the next morning, when i boot to the disk, the hard drive itself is not even recognized under disk utility??? So basically, I cant reload OS again because I cant see the installation disk. Is this a a hardware issue even though I just replaced the hard drive?
    what do i do??

    Hi MBPrunner;
It appears you have the misfortune of infant mortality whereby a bring new part fails in a short period of time. This does happen. I have seen it numerous time in my years of server support at IBM. My suggestion is take it back it back to Apple with all of your paperwork. They should make good on it.

  • HT1710 What does it mean if the blue screen appears and stays on with no further activity?

My disk failed. Apple store replaced it with a disk with OS X. I tried to load from valid time machine backup. eventually I got a blue screen.
What does this mean and what should I do?
Here is more of this story:
When I picked up my computer after the disk was replaced, I was told I could do a time machine recovery. After about 6 hours the recovery said it had less than a minute to go and was transferring "your" network settings. at 9 hours it said the same thing.
I rebooted DVD to try to reload MAC OS X but it crashed with "INSTALL FAILED  MAC OS X could not be installed on your computer Click restart and try again"
I did but it would not boot.
I reloaded the disk utility and and it showed no problems but the next OS X install failed (hung).
I then wrote zeros to all the disk (could not find a reformat command). This went tith out error.
I restarted the OSX install and it appeared to work.
I started the install from time machine again and it hung in the same place. (less than a minute remaining. The completion bar had a sliver of white at the end but was mostly blue)

It just means it's hungup just before completing, we can get more info with Verbose boot...
    CMD+v keys on bootup...

  • Boot camp shows 'no bootable device...' on restart

Hi, have had my new Imac a week or so, late 2013 Intel based with new OS etc, working fine with the OS so decided to install Win7 using boot camp.
The system in OS went fine, downloaded the drivers etc onto a USB stick, started the boot camp software, the Imac restarted but is hung at 'No bootable device--- insert boot disk and press any key' now the stupid amongst us would ask where the 'any key' is but you have probably heard that one before.
I cannot reload Mac OS either, unless there is a secret key stroke sequence out there , is there ?
I have an external drive which has been working fine for some time, a win7 64bit disc, which when inserted into the exetrnal dvd drieve does nothing, it flashes a couple of times but comes back with the same message.
Good job I kept my trusty old Pc so I could post this
Please help before I lose my sense of humour.
    Thanks
    Eric

Remove all external devices when you try to boot. The system does not know which device to boot from when you have multiple devices (usb stick, external drive, etc.) attached. You only attach the device required for the specific step of the Boot Camp process you are currently performing.
To boot back into OSx the key sequence is to press and hold the option key when powering up the computer. You can set the default boot OS after you get Windows working.

  • Photo Booth is not working

I have used photo booth in the past but now when I click on its icon in the dock, nothing happens. Any ideas please?

Thankyou for your reply. I followed your advice and downloaded pacifist and then went in search of the missing files. They were found and I installed them BUT, when I restarted my computer, I had encountered a major problem. The computer continuously flashed the finder and desktop windows and was totally unresponsive to any commands. The only way to stop was to hold down the power button. On restart, the same problem existed - weird! In desperation, I reloaded Mac OS and the problems have gone. I even have PhotoBooth back.
One final question. Can I now delete the 'Previous System Folder' that was created during the reload of the system software?
Thanks again to you and Aqua for your support and patience.

  • How to get the old Iphoto ?

Looks like I don't have iPhoto anymore.... I just upgraded to Mac OS X Mountain Lion a few months ago. Last week I erased the HD and lost Iphoto when I reloaded Mac OS X. Any way to get back the old version of IPhoto ? I have lots of pictures that are in iPhoto.. That I can't use, or when are stored the pictures ? There are about 20 GB of them... Thanks for your help.

You can use the disks that came with your Mac to reinstall the original version of iPhoto.  They may look like one of these:
The apply the latest updaters for that verson.

  • Windows 7 64bit and MBP

Hello, how can I install windows 7 64bit version on my MBP??
Now I use Mac os 10.6 and windows 7 32bit. I want to use all RAM memory (4gb)... Thets why I need 64bit.
So, the problem is.. When I'am trying to install 64bit windows 7, installer wrote that he cant find dvd-rom driver.
How I try to install windows:
    1. Burn UDF disk (original Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, ~3.15gb)
    2. Reload mac, with C key.
    3. See the Windows installer. Click install, see the problem.
So, can anybody help me? )) Maybe I make a mistake wiht burning Dvd or My MBP doesnt support 64bit OS??P.S. Sorry for my English))) I'm not American )

I am having the same problem trying to install 64 bit Windows 7. I used the Bootcamp Assistant, followed the whole process as specified, but at an early stage it said it needed a driver for the cd/dvd drive; when I tried to give it the required driver, it said 'No drivers found'. I took it to the Apple Store and even the 'Geniuses' couldn't sort it. We tried putting the OSX disk in an external disk drive and giving it the drivers that way, but same message... (32 bit was no problem). Apple Store are contacting an engineer to see if they have any further ideas, will post if they come back with anything useful.
