Reloading OS on MacBook Pro

Hello, I am presently trying to help someone who has a MacBook Pro that had Windoze XP on it. He bought it from a place that was upgrading their computers and did not get any disks with it.
How does one find out what system was originally installed? The XP was a straight boot from ms and therefore the audio and disk drive was rendered useless.
They gave him three sets of MacBook Pro discs. They are OS 10.4.6, 10.4.7 and 10.5. He brought his computer to me to see if I could load his OSX back on. He had taken it to a MS outfit who really messed it up.
To make the story shorter, I tried the first two, and they each started to load. The first one stopped at install with "Alert. This software cannot be installed on this computer". So I tried the second. It formatted the disc, and then said the same thing. Now I did not have ANY OS on the computer. These two systems said it did not have a disk drive even though it was reading from it. Then I tried the OS 10.5. It went a little farther than the other two. It now said that it had a disc drive when I read the profile. It started loading the system and then came up with an error. The error said that "This computer will not load OSX." Well, it didn't have to tell me that, because it was right.
Is there a special OS for this MacBook? Or is this guy just out his bucks? It looks like a decent computer. Nice display. The XP looked good until it was wiped by trying to load.
I didn't think that Windows could be loaded on a Mac without the basic OSX.
Anyone have an idea? The serial of this MacBook is W86230XZVWZ

olddon,
The owner should have insisted that the Macbook Pro come with its original "Software Restore" disks. These disks will contain installers for a machine-specific version of OS X, the latest version available at the time the machine was manufactured, and they will also contain all the "bundled software" that comes with every Mac.
Without these disks, the owner will have absolutely none of the iLife components: iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, etc. I strongly recommend that the owner purchase the latest iLife suite.
All this said, I see one thing that may be preventing the installation of 10.5 (this is the only version of OS X that you can install on the Macbook Pro). Let's see if we can't get you past that....
Boot to the 10.5 install disk by holding down the "C" key when you hear the startup chime, with the disk inserted. WHen the installer loads, choose a language, then open Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu.
At the left side of the Disk Utility window, select the Macbook Pro's internal hard drive. Select the drive, not the named volume that will appear indented underneath. With the drive selected, switch to the "Partition" pane.
In the "Partition" pane, choose "Current" as a partition scheme (you want just one partition), choose "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" as the format, name the volume to be created "Macintosh HD," then click the "Options..." button. Here, you want to select the "GUID" partition scheme. Confirm your choices, then click "Apply."
Quit Disk Utility to return to the installer, then attempt to install OS X.
Scott
P.S. The problem, based on what you have posted, is that the internal drive has an "MBR" partition map. In order to install OS X for an Intel Mac, the drive must use the "GUID" partition map scheme. -s

  • Recent Pages update isn't recognized on my MacBook Pro. Tried to open a document I created and I get a message that says I need to update to newer version to open that document. How do I reload the latest update for Pages in Maverick?

After updates to Pages and several other applications I received an update to Mavericks 10.9, all of which were downloaded and uploaded to my MacBook Pro. After the uploads I created a document in Pages which I saved to my folder. Now when I try to open it I      get a message that says I need the latest version of Pages to open this document. What do I need to do to reload the last update to Pages so I can open my document?

In both cases you have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Judging from sterling r's response Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

My Aperture 2.1 has gone into a continual thumbnail mode.  I left the computer, a MacBook Pro, run all night, about 12 hours and it is still making thumbnails.  I tried reloading Aperture 2.1, but that did not change anything.  I have also turned the system off, for a period of time, and then turning it back on, when I click on Aperture, it comes up and locks in the thumbnail mode.  I can view my stored pictures, even modify them, but it still says thumbnails.
I got in this mode by trying to import "one jpeg photo", from a scanned slide using a Nikon Scan4 IS5000ED scanner.  I had saved the scan to my  desktop before I tried to import it.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

When my MacBook Pro was erased and reloaded, my address book, stickies and bookmarks on all my browsers were gone!  How can I re-load the old contents.  I've looked at all the back-ups.  I find the applications, but not the contents.

    You had two choices:
1- you save the files from your user library
2- use icloud which would put them back

  • I have a MacBook Pro 13" and am using Airport Time Capsule and iCloud. I delete my cookies all the time, but every so often the cookies reappear after rebooting. It is the exact same amount of cookies each time, so I wonder why they're being reloaded?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (2010) running OS X 10.9.2   and have Airport Time Capsule. I routinely delete my cookies and often (every couple days or so) when I reboot, a number of cookies reappear in my Safari settings. The number of cookies that reappear is exactly the same when it does it (351 cookies) so I'm wondering if it is related to my Airport Time Capsule or possibly iCloud? How do the cookies get back into my MacBook Pro? Or.... Have they ever actually left? Befoer I reboot, I delete them and sometimes they stay gone for 24hrs or more, but then reappear the next time I reboot. Can someone tell me if there is a way to clear the cookies so they won't come back?

Blocking all cookies in Safari does not work. Deleted cookies will not stay deleted. There are numerous threads on this going back years, both in these forums and elsewhere. Many claim to have submitted the issue to Apple, but I have never seen anyone post a reply.
I have seen many suggested fixes that involve finding the cookies file, some including Terminal manipulations, and none seems to work universally. I can find noplace where Apple addresses this officially with an actual Apple-approved explanation or how-to.
Bottom line, your browser's security features should do what they claim: delete cookies. When they come back without ever even visiting another page, this is clearly not working in the way a reasonable user would expect.
Bottom line, Safari does not protect users' privacy in the way it pretends to and, after so many years of this issue, it appears that Apple wants it this way.
Having spent way too much time on this, I realize the choice is between Safari which is pretty well optimized; Firefox which is a lot pokier, at least for me; and Chrome, which I assume funnels personal information directly to Google.

  • How do I completely wipe and reload my macbook pro

I am about to sell my MacBook Pro because my girlfiend and I need the money. What measures do I take to wiping the hard drive clean and restoring it to it's default factory settings before I sell it?

Your profile indicates you have v10.7 installed.
You can reformat (erase) the startup disk and reinstall OS X using Lion Recovery

  • Need to format the drive on a 2006 MacBook Pro 10.6.8. Command R does not get it to recovery mode. I need to format, reload OS10 and partition the drive.

I tried command R to get into recovery mode. My goal is to format the MBP drive, partition the drive and load Windows through Boot Camp. Disk Utility will not allow access to reformat the drive. Is there another access method to format the drive?

    jjoside,
Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8) does not come with Recovery mode; you’d need Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) or newer for that. If you’d like to reformat your internal disk and reïnstall Snow Leopard on it, you’ll need to boot from the white retail Snow Leopard DVD which was originally used to install Snow Leopard on your MacBook Pro. [Your 2006 MacBook Pro came from the factory with Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.something) installed.] If you no longer have your white Snow Leopard DVD, you can purchase a replacement Snow Leopard DVD from Apple.

  • Is Snow Leopard part of the the gray MacBook Pro disks? I am having trouble burning a cd and was told to reload Snow Leopard? I do not have a Snow Leopard disk?  Help!

Is Snow Leopard part of the gray MacBook Pro disks that were included with the computer when I purchased it. I DO NOT have a disk with SNOW LEOPARD written on it?

Maybe you should first tell us what your problem is. You may not need to reinstall Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is what your installer disc has - 10.6. Reinstalling may also require installing a number of updates as well.  Here's the basic reinstall process:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize Canon MP800, even after reloading print drivers

Time Warner Cable updated servers. We had to update the DNS address for the MacBook Pro to maintain internet access. After doing this MacBook Pro doesn't recognize the Canon MP800 printer - shows no print drivers for Canon IJ Network , even after reinstalling printer software and downloading print drivers from Canon website - MPNavigator 2.0 keeps saying print driver has not installed. The MacBook is wirelessly networked with the printer and an EMac. We haven't updated the DNS address for the EMac because it still recognizes the printer and prints; however, we now don't have internet access with EMac as a result.

If printing wirelessly check your printer sharing settings - System Preferences/Sharing
If printer is connected directly to your computer, check your printer connections, read the troubleshooting section in your printer manual and check the printer manufacturer website for drivers you may need to update.

  • HT1349 My macbook pro will not print to wireless printer-it just printed fine the other day.  Even reloaded the printer driver, etc, message is "there is a communication error" -in the printer queue it says it is printing then error message pops up

Macbook Pro unable to print to wireless printer-other PC prints fine and mac just printed a couple days ago just fine.  Tried reboot of router-no change, tried reinstall printer driver, etc, no change.  what do I do now?

As you can see here, that particular Canon printer is not supported by AirPrint:

More importantly, these directions should help in trying to set up your printer.
