Reloading part of iPhoto library

Hi,
I'm trying to reload part of my Iphoto library onto my new hard drive-- however-- It seems I can only upgrade to new iphoto software and then put back all 10000 photos which I don't want to do! Anyone know of another option?
Thanks!

  • Moving only part of iphoto library to external hard drive

I would like to only move part of my iphoto library to an external hard drive.  Trying to archive my older pictures.  I know how to move the entire library but not so sure on how to move only parts of the library.  Do i need to create a second archived library and move the pictures I want to archive to that archived libary and then move the archived libary to an external hard drive?

Here's one way to do it:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Apple TV 2 only showing limited part of iPhoto Library

For the first time today, I tried looking at photos on my ATV-2 and was dissappointed that I could only see a small subset of what is on my Mac and many of the ones presented were blank, just a black square with two white rectangles.
I have iPhoto 11 running on my Mac with 65 events and 4000 photos in total.  I have sharing set to Share my entire library.
On my Apple TV 2 -> Photos I see only one entry under Albums - Last 12 months - with 638 photos.  When I open it more than half of photos are blank although the meta data (date) changes as a scroll through the blank ones.
    I am running ATV iOS 4.3 (2557)
Videos and Music stored in itunes work fine.  Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks

Further information.  I changed the iPhoto library I am using in iPhoto and the change is recognized in iTunes.  However, my  ATV2 is still looking at the old one.
Most frustrating - plus the fact that I can't buy an iPhoto book as it thinks my phone number is invalid.. I wonder if there is a connection through corrupted preferences or something.

  • Can't reload iPhoto library from Time Machine

I ran into a problem with my iPhoto library this morning. I deleted it in its entirely, emptied iPhoto trash and then the general trash. When I tried to reinstall the iPhoto library from Time Machine, I was informed there was not sufficient free space on my hard drive to do so. I have a 500 GB hard drive and dumped over 4,000 pictures, yet had only 6 GB of space reported on my hard drive when I went to reload the library from Time Machine. I can't see how this is possible. I had sufficient space for the original library before I trashed it. According to the Information under File, I have pretty much the same amount of free space on my computer as I had before I dumped the library. I have run utilities (OnyX and Apple utilities). They identify no disk problems or problems of any kind. I've scanned for viruses. There are none. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do to restore my library other than buy a new computer?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
    Computer: early 2008
    Software: OSX 10.9.5

Reboot and check the free space again.  If still at 6 GB Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and disk.  Reboot normally and check again.
Lastly you may have to reindex your hard drive:  Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple

  • I needed idvd, but since my iMac is newer, I didn't have idvd on it. I installed iLife 11. I should not have installed the iPhoto part because it was 9.1 and my iMac was 9.2. So now my iPhoto wouldn't work. I went to iPhoto Library organizer.

I shouldn't have installed the iPhoto part because now my iPhoto wouldn't work since iLife 11 was 9.1 and my iMac had 9.2. So I used iPhoto Library Manager to create a new library. That was working, but my computer ran out of hard drive room since my original iPhoto had 137 GB of photos. My new iPhoto library had the majority of my pics and the iPhoto now worked with those pics. But now I still had all of those original pics in my hard drive. I thought that by getting rid of the original iPhoto on the iPhoto Library Manager I would get rid of all of those original pics. I now have no access to them but they are in my hard drive and I can't do much with my iMac because it is all clogged up with those original pics - I think. How do I get rid of my original iPhoto pics out of my hard drive?

What system are you running?  If it's Mt. Lion go to the App Store and sign in with the Apple ID you used to purchase the Mac.  Go to Purchases and download iPhoto again. The current version is 9.4.3.
If you're unable to download iPhoto from the App Store you can reomstall iPhoto from the iLife 11 disk and  update it from the Apple Downloads website  to the highest version you can get to (I was able to update all the way to 9.4.3 via the updaters). Then if iPhoto can't open the library  use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild it and it will rebuild it compatible with your version of iPhoto via this iPLM tutorial: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) 2>&- | wc -l | pbcopy
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be a number. It's automatically copied to the Clipboard. Please paste it into a reply.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

  • 1293 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that are not a part of this photo library.

In preparation for merging two iPhoto libraries with Aperture, I ran "repair database" as suggested above by léonie in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4998390?tstart=0
After chugging for a while, iPhoto puts up a modal dialog box saying:
1293 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that are not a part of this photo library.
Would you like to import them?
    What does this mean?

I re-ran the the repair on a backup of my library and chose "yes" on the import of of the found pictures.
Unfortunately, the saved pictures included both original and edited images and the import did not re-assemble them into just a single entry.
For example, I have a two pictures of a portico ceiling, the original (with an ID of P1010071_2) and another (P1010071) which is the same except that iPhoto's "Enhance" Quick Fix has been applied.
Is there any way rejoin the original  (P1010071_2) and fixed images(P1010071) into a single entry?

  • Help; I can only synchronize parts of my iPhoto library to my iPad.

Help; I can only synchronize parts of my iPhoto library to my iPad.
When I connect my iPad to my iMac using iTunes, I am not able to synchronize all of the library. I have marked off All pictures, events etc., but it only synchronize parets of it. I have plenty of available space, so it is not that.
    Can anybody help?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache.
Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

  • Is my iPhoto library part of "all my files"?  I'm guessing yes, but how do I differentiate?

  • IPhoto is "ignoring" a large part of my iPhoto library

    Hi.
As I needed to save some space on my Powerbook, I'm regulary doing back up on an external HD of all the datas, includind iphoto Library (and iTunes etc...).
And I deleted most of the pictures on my laptop iPhoto Library.
I wanted recently have a view of some of the pictures located on the external HD through iPhoto (opening with control key down and selecting the library on the HD) and discovered that only a part of the photos were accessible through iPhoto although these "invisible" pictures are in the iPhoto Library, with there metatdatas etc and accessible through Photoshop, for exemple...
And I do not understand why.
Other point. After I saw that problem, I did another back up, with new pictures imported recently in iPhoto: these new pictures are on the HD but still not visible through iPhoto.
How is it possible to recover the access to the whole pictures?
    In advance, many thanks.
    Gérard.

The best thing you can do now is to consolidate all the pics into a single library (taking care to avoid duplicates). The best way to do this is to import only the Originals back into the library on your internal HD.
    Then you have two options:
    1. Run iPhoto entirely from the External HD - that is move your iPhoto Library Folder to the External and point iPhoto to it. (Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Use the dialogue to locate the Library on the External)
    2. Create one or more libraries (say, year based) on the External and then use iPhoto Library Manager to move photos from your internal to these libraries. iPLM is the only way to do this while preserving metadata etc. You can read about it here: http://homepage.mac.com/bwebster/iphotolibrarymanager.html
Then, when you've moved the pics across to the new libraries you can move them to the iPhoto trash, and then empty the trash.
Remember, the key to iPhoto is to do everything via the iPhoto Window.

  • How do I move a bunch of photos to another part of the iPhoto Library?

    Hi,
Awhile ago I noticed that 11 photos shot way back in May keep appearing at the end of every new group of photos I add in my libary and not sure how to fix this.
There is a spot in my libary of one photo shot on the same day and I'm wondering if I can add these 11 photos next to it in the libary so inbetween two photos? If that isn't possible then maybe I can add the 11 to that one photo of the same date.
I've created a folder of the 11 on the left hand side column and tried a few things but can't figure out what to do.
    Any ideas?
    S.

    S:
If you're looking at them in an Event then the order is determined by the date. You can put them into the order you'd like by putting them in an album, manually sorting. Then do a Batch Change of the date. A 1 minute or more differential will be put between the files and they will all have the same date.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I combine part of one iPhoto library with another one?

Somehow back in January I ended up with three iPhoto libraries.  Since then all my photos have been imported to a library that is filled with garbage, Faces thumbnails, duplicate pictures, etc.  From this "garbage" library I want to move what has been imported since January and move it to the clean one I somehow lost track of back then.  Then I'll have one good contiguous library and can get rid off the "garbage" one once and for all.
I want to get this done before I upgrade to Lion and iPhoto 2011.
I've wasted a lot of time trying to figure this out on my own.  Please help!

iPhoto doesn't have a library manager built in.  Take a look at Fat Cat Software's iPhoto Library Manager.
