Reloading Vista after a disk wipe

I have a Paviillon 6500 Entertainment laptop that came with Vista pre-loaded. I bought a new laptop a couple of months ago and wiped the drive of this pavillion because I originally thought I was going to junk it. But now, if I can get Vista back on it, I'd like to donate it to a local charity. I've tried to reload it with the recovery disk and it doesn't work. I've tried to download the image files from another post .. but those links are broken. I tried to buy a recovery disk online, but that requires drivers on the machine and there's nothing on it. (at least I think that's the problem -- i'm not really tech saavy) . Any other suggestions?

Reloading VISTA Using Recovery Disks

I have a Lenovo 3000 N Laptop, Model 0768 A52.
The hard drive is failing - corruption errors, failed check disk results, etc.
I plan to install a new hard drive but before I do are there any instructions or guidance on using the Recovery Disks I already made from the machine? What about drivers?
I would prefer a step by step process for reinstalling VISTA on the new hard drive.

enhayden, welcome to the forum,
the recovery discs will install the hard drive to the original factory state including all drivers.
You need to boot from the first cd you created and follow the instructions.
I hope you were able to get your important files copied from the failing drive.

How to do recovery after a disk wipe?

Hi everyone! Happy to report that my T61 with a defective display card replaced (of course at my own expense) has been working for over a year now and now it is time to sell it.
I carefully wiped its hard drive clean with DBAN. I also backed up the Rescue and Recovery partition with clonezilla on my usb hdd. Now I restored it back to my lenovo hdd but the recovery won't restore system. It will go all the way to select factory restore and starts to restore it and then report a strange problem like % error etc. If I try to do restore my back up, it complains the partition is not found.
I figured, it must be the boot record. I have it set up like this
MBR has two partitions, first one is 7 GB with RR restored in it with clonezilla.
second one is also primary NTFS (07 type), and takes up the rest of the drive space.
My question is, how should I have set up the partition to make RR program restore either factory setting or a full backup made with RR?

Just want the computer to go to a good home and not contain personal info. Now to look at this 2008 computer, it really is dated at the time I bought it, no web cam, no card reader, etc. I was gonna use it for linux but without these two I can't. Not interested in purchasing anything for this old timer any more. Plus, battery is not good to even start with, 100 minutes?!

Oh, sorry I was remembering a really old version of RR, I now use either a windows 98 install disk and run fdisk, or use restore to factory setting in the recovery. Does dban remove all the partitions? I found installs work better when it creates a new partition from scratch when it installs.

Restore Computer Back to Vista after Windows 7 upgrade and back again?

I got Satellite L505-S6946 that came with Vista Home Premium installed (I immediately made backup-5 disks in all). I got the free Windows 7 upgrade disk from Toshiba and upgraded my laptop. I messed up and did not make the backup disks like I should have. I had to reinstall windows 7 more than once (shouldn't let others use my computer!) and it hasn't seem to run quite the same after reinstall. I also noticed that for a driver Intel ICH9 Family SMBus Controller 2930 it says no device driver installed. I didn't notice that before. And I have tried to install it. Whatever the cause, to me it just doesn't seem to run the same. I was wondering if I could go back and reinstall Vista from my disks and then upgrade to windows 7 with my upgrade again (and this time make backup copy!)? I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but I am not really computer savvy. Thank You. Jakey58

We have lots of machines running Windows Vista. (I'm typing this message on one.) They work just fine. I never even consider upgrading them to Windows 7.
Just because the Geeks don't like Vista and just because Microsoft wants you to use the latest and greatest doesn't mean you must upgrade.
I've heard some people put solar panels on the shady side of the house where the neighbors can see them.

BlackBerry Z10 and movies not playing after a device wipe.

I have a number of movies I purchased and downloaded over the holidays, some which were gifts during the give away, and after I had to wipe and reload my device they are no longer working.
I used BlackBerry Link to sync all the movies (approximately 30GB) to my PC. I used BlackBerry Link to sync the movies back to my handheld. However after the movies finished synching I got the follow error when I tried to play them:
"The file can't be opened. Download the original file or its license again and try again".
I then went to BB world to download the license files again since I obviously had the movies, and on a number of them I got "Failed to get video license".
Question #1 - If I synced the folders using BB Link, why did it not include everything I need to play the movies again after a device wipe (including the license data)?
Question #2 - Why do I have to re-download the license data?
Question #3 - Why is the license file data failing to download again?
Question #4 - Why did the movies that failed to download the video license then start to re-download the entire movie when I hit the retry button?
Question #5 - Why are some movies such as "Deck the Halls" (with Sinbad) that I got through the xmas promotion not showing up in BB World so I can try to re-download the license file?
This who experience of wiping my Z10 and starting over has been a major pain, starting with the slow speed of Link syncing to the fact that I clearly didn't sync over everything I needed to so I could re-sync my movies and make them operational again.

The movies were all on my SD card. They are also not backed up by Link which is why had them synced to my phone as a poor man's backup.
So either Link did not backup the necessary licensing information in the main memory of my phone, or Link did not synchronize the necessary licensing information off my SD card. Either way I am stuck with 3 movies that I cannot play, because I can no longer find them in the BlackBerry World store to re-dowbload whatever licensing information is needed.
I even just tried a media restore from Link because it was 138 MB in size (and in don't normally store anything on my phone's main storage), but alas no licensing information was restored.

Vista via remote disk

hi,
after trying and trying , i finally gave up and realised that one may not install vista via remote disk
so i created a .iso of the vista install disk . And over my networked, transfered it over to my MBA desktop.
yet bootcamp wont reconized or install vista...
is there any way i can use some type of vertual drive and trick bootcamp ?
or do i NEED to buy the super drive ?

Reloading iTunes after restoring computer

I just had to restore my HP laptop (vista) after replacing the motherboard, HD, etc.
I'm trying to reload my iTunes, but it looks like I only had about half of my music saved on my external harddrive. Is there a way to reload it from my ipod touch? I read on another Apple support page that you can set it up to manually move music, or a thrid party program.
Since the touch isn't harddrive based, is it even possible?

Insert your Original OS X Install or Upgrade Disc and startup holding the Option Key. > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
Startup from the Install Disk and open (depending on the install disc version) Utilities > Disk Utility.
Next you will need to use Disk Utility to set the new drives Partition Map Scheme to GUID Partition Table and it's Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then you will need to reinstall the OS X either from your backup Clone, Time Machine or fresh from the Install Disc.

The recovery disk allows you to reinstall the Vista and all the Toshiba drivers and tools.
Dont be afraid to install Win 7.
If something will go wrong, you will be able to recover the notebook using the recovery disk. This will set the notebook back to factory settings

What is the correct way to restore the catalog after a disk failure?

I am running the latest Itunes on Vista. The disk failed on my old computer and I have a backup of the catalog file. The music files are on external storage (NAS). I've been searching for instructions on how to restore Itunes.
The catalog is about 1 week out of sync with the music files because I added some music in between backups of the catalog file and the disk failure.
In a perfect world, I'd like to restore the catalog with playlists and the album art.
Are there instructions to accomplish this or do I need to rebuild the catalog from the music files and recode my playlists?

Firstly I don’t have a NAS drive so what I say applies to and external HD, but it should be similar.
When you say catalogue file, I guess you mean the iTunes database files – iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml. The xml file is just used to allow other programs access to the library but can be useful because you can rebuild the itl file from it.
If you want your art work, you need a folder in the iTunes folder called Album Artwork.
So ideally you would like to be able to recover your old iTunes folder from backup.
If I understand you correctly, you had all your music on a NAS drive and the library files on your internal drive. Were all the music files/folders located the iTunes Music folder on the NAS drive? I will assume you have, it is much harder to get things working if they were not.
I guess you now have your NAS drive mapped into your new computer so you can see it as a drive letter.
So I hope this will work for you…
With iTunes closed, drag the iTunes folder from it’s current location to your desktop. I think the iTunes folder is in Music in Vista.
Now copy your backup iTunes folder into Music.
Now start iTunes and got to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>General and set the location of your iTunes Music folder to your folder on the NAS drive.
If you can see your music as it was when you did the backup, you can use Add Folder to Library to add the folder containing your music. Don’t worry, this shouldn’t create duplicates but it will add any tracks not currently in your library.
If you don’t have the iTunes folder, the procedure is similar except that instead of dragging the whole iTunes folder out to the desk top, just drag iTunes Library.itl and replace it with the backup. You won’t get your artwork if you just do this.

After using Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions, can't login when restart my macbook pro10.6.8 Snow Leopard

Reason I try to use Disk Utility's Repair is because the finder got not respond so ofter, it happen after my unscuessful power loss issues happen at home, before I doing Disk Utility's Repair I have try to build another admin account and guest user to reslove the ifnder not respond problem and it fix......
I'm sure problem was cause after using Disk Utility's Repair tool..
Now I can turn on by using Safy mode, just can't plugin USB =(

I called Apple Support after getting no usuable help through the Apple Forums. The rep felt is was a problem with the two older USB 2.0 drives compatablility with the Retina Macbook Pro's USB 3.0. He kindly offered to send me a Compatable USB 3.0 Drive, but could not offer a solution.
FYI, I tried using different cords and both USB 3.0 ports on my Retina MacBook Pro and both are self powered.

Blank CD icon remains after burning disk

Hi all,
When I burn a CD (with either the Finder or iTunes) the blank CD icon remains on the desktop even after the disk has been burned.
For instance, if I burn, say, a Beatles CD using iTunes, the original "Untitled CD.fpbf" icon remains on the desktop, and under it another "Beatles" CD icon appears. If I eject the newly-burned CD, the "Untitled CD.fpbf" CD icon remains. If I insert another blank disk, another "Untitled CD.fpbf" CD icon appears. These icons don't disappear until I manually drag them to the trash.
Is there something I can do to stop this?

First make sure you are using the most up to date version of iTunes and have all the latest Windows updates/patches installed on your PC. From there, try again and if still no luck, make sure you are plugging your iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port.
Otherwise try these steps:
1. Run “c:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc” (i.e. *Device Manager*), and leave it open for now for later use
2. Start up iTunes
3. Next, connect your iPod.
4. Go to your iPod Settings and select the “Enable disk use” option from under theSummary tab.
5. A dialog box will pop up reminding you that you’ll need to manually eject. Go ahead and hit OK
6. Hit Apply to save changes to the iPod
7. Quickly switch to the Device Manager window and right-click on any item within the window and select “Scan for hardware changes”
8. Finally, switch back to iTunes, and try re-syncing your iPod to see if it helped.
It might not also hurt to trash your iPod's Photo cache if it has one (i.e. you sync photos to the iPod). See this article for information on where to find this folder on your Windows XP machine.
