Relocate Masters - small (?) puzzle

I'm switching from Managed to Referenced images. I tried it first on my MBP. (If it works well I'll do the same on my iMac, then use a combination of ChronoSync to synchronize image files, and export/import projects to keep the Libraries in sync.)
I got all my images into a date-structured folder tree -- except for one that remained Managed. Why? Nothing special about that image that I can see. I made a Smart Album to list all Managed images, just to check for this in the future. Then I Relocated that one master separately. The Smart Album now shows no contents.
Then I went to add a vault for the new, much smaller Library. The Add Vault dialog insisted I still had one managed image. I restarted Aperture, even restarted the laptop. Still the same message in the dialog. Still nothing in the Smart Album. I went ahead and made the vault. No harm done -- but I'm puzzled, and I don't like such puzzles. Any illumination?

As I said in my first message, I did relocate that image separately. Doesn't explain why it was left behind when all the others were relocated, but I won't worry about that. The puzzle is, now that it is definitely relocated, and no others show up as managed, why did the Add Vault command insist that there is still one managed image?

  • Fastest? Relocate Masters or Finder move with Locate referenced files

I have maxed out the 2 x 1TB drives in my MP dedicated to referenced masters, and I'm about to consolidate them onto a new 2 x 2TB drive setup. My question is which is the fastest solution for moving 1.5 TB of images on my current setup onto one of the new 2TB drives.
FYI, the new HDD is now connected via eSATA to an external housing, with write speeds of around 100 MB/sec. Once all data is transferred and relinked, I'll open the case and swap out the new drives internally for the old 1TB ones.
    Is it fastest to?
    1. Use Aperture's "Relocate Masters" fucntion. My question is how much extra overhead is involved with doing this via Aperture?
    2. Do a Finder copy of the files, then once they are moved open Aperture and use the "Locate Referenced Files" to reconnect the images to the new HDD.
Has anyone done any speed tests on this? I have about 80,000 refernced images, so I'd like to cut the file transfer time down as much as possible.

Select a batch of images, and go into +Locate Referenced Files+ - just the same as doing one at a time. Match up one image from your batch with the file and then, instead of hitting the <Reconnect> button, hit the <Reconnect All> button.
Do a small batch initial until you get the hang of it, and then make a bigger selection and go and have a cup of tea...
Here's an [earlier description|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11334896#113348 96] I gave of this process with some background details of how I handled it first time around.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I move from one external drive to another, without the "Relocate Masters" command?

I have my masters referenced on an external hard drive, and I've been mirroring that drive with another so that I have a backup (the volume names were ApertureLib1 for the primary drive and Photo7 for the backup).  I've filled that drive, so it will no longer be my primary master drive (i.e. all new masters going forward are going on a new, separate drive).  I want to keep one of the two drives online and put the other away as an offsite backup.
The catch is that the primary drive (ApertureLib1) does not place nicely with my Lexar Firewire 400 CF reader; when I insert or eject a card, it has a habit of disconnecting itself.  The backup drive (Photo7) does not exhibit this issue.  So I decided that I'd just rename Photo7 to ApertureLib1 and be on my way; the folder containing all the masters (PhotoLib) is mirrored by using Arrsync (an rsync GUI), so all the files should be there.
Great theory, except that Aperture does not recognize the renamed Photo7 drive as ApertureLib1, despite the system seeing it as such (both in the Finder sidebar and showing up in /Volumes as "ApertureLib1").  The "locate referenced masters" dialog shows ApertureLib1 as 'offline' and does not give me any opportunity to point to the second drive as the master location.
I assume that Aperture is somehow tracking a separate unique identifier for the drive. Does anyone know what this might be and how I might convince it to treat the was-a-backup drive as being the One, True Location for this set of masters?
    Many thanks.
(and I really don't want to use "relocate masters" because I'd first need to delete the exsiting copy on the second drive and then move over all of the images from the first drive, before copying them back to have a backup)

    Hi Kevin,
I understand what you tried to do but it doesn't work that way. Swapping drive names will just mess things up.
You should be able to reconnect the files though: in the Locate Referenced Files dialog make sure you click the Show Reconnect Options button — this will give you access to all the connected drives. Locate one of the files and hit Reconnect All. Should do the trick.

  • What's the correct way to use "Relocate Masters?"

I have 100GB of master images on one drive. Twenty gigs of those photos are imported into Aperture already (I use the referenced masters method), and I will be importing the remaining 80 gigs eventually (all referenced). For now I need to move all 100 gigs to another drive. How should I do this in Aperture?
Is "relocate masters" just for the images already imported and part of my Aperture library? Should I just drag and drop the other 80 gigs that are not yet imported? What procedure would you use to accomplish what I need to do? Thanks.

No, the best way would be to run relocate masters first and let Aperture move the images that are already imported into it.  When that's done drag whats left.
If you drag all the files over Aperture will lose track of the ones imported into it ad you will have to run reconnect master rather than relocate master and while reconnecting works it's not as easy as relocate.

  • Relocate Masters, keep existing file structure

    Hello,
I've got a ton of photos that are organized by folder (by date and then by name of event). I've pulled them into Aperture as referenced files. I need to relocate those masters, but I want to keep the existing file structure. If I use the "relocate masters" command, Aperture creates its own file structure, which makes it virtually impossible to search the folders by event because it strips my existing file names. How can I relocate the master files while keeping my existing file structure?
    Thanks!

Select the previews with the broken links, look under file-manage referenced images.
Dialog will show the disconnected files in upper part of dialog, and a navigation area in the lower part, select one of the disconnected files from the top, find it's mate in the lower. If they are all in the same folder hit reconnect all button and they should all magically reattach.
There's probably some better instructions in the help file.

  • Relocate masters changed my raw files to jpeg.

I don' want my images in the aerture library but in folders that I can drag and drop as I please. So today I decided to relocate my masters. Thankfully I had backed up my entire Pictures folder on a separate drive. Thankfully, because the relocate function didn't just move my projects in to folders, as I wanted, but it also changed everything from RAW to JPG.. That was not what I wanted.
I'm restoring from the back up as I type this.
BBasically I'm back to square one and need to find a way to extract my immages out of the aperture library and in to folders keeping the raw format. Any suggestions?

Did you choose File >> Relocate Masters?
Aperture will not make a jpeg from a RAW unless you either choose File>> Export Version(s) or drag from the Aperture Browser to the finder. Even then, the RAW master remains intact.
The correct procedure for what you want to do is File >> Relocate Masters.

  • External Hard Drive Unmounted During Relocate Masters

I was relocating my masters to an external USB drive when the drive spontaneously unmounted.  Now I don't really know what the situation is -- only some of the files transferred, obviously.  Does Aperture know where all the masters are?  When I tried to do another "Relocate Masters" with the hard drive plugged in to re-re-locate them back to my internal drive, it says some are missing but it doesn't specify which or how many or what it thinks is going on.  I just don't know how to proceed.  I just want things back the way they were.
Maybe I should just start fresh from a Vault backup?  Or is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks.

To look for the images with missing masters turn on badge overlays in the browser view. All problematic images should show badges with an arrow and a yellow warning triangle like in the screenshot above. To find all of them quickly create a smart album and add a rule "File Status" is "Misisng". This album will contain all of the images with missing masters. To get an overview over the general state of your masters, create several smart albums with all the "File Status" options, i.e. "offline".
For the missing masters set the metadata display to display the filename. Then use Spotlight to search for the file. If Spotlight finds the file, use "Show All in Finder", like in the example below, where I searched for missing Australia images.
If Spotlight cannot find the image, then those may have been mooved outside your home folder.
Open a Terminal window and enter:
        open /Volumes
(when your external Volume is connected):
This will open a Finder Window with all volumes connected to your computer. This way  you can browse and  files and folder at the root level of your drives.

  • Used Relocate Masters to new g-drive. Lost Aperature Library and meta data

    how i crashed aperature
    1.56 aperature
    all updates current
    tiger 10.4.11
    all updates current
Goal was to move Aperature Library from MBP to g-drive.
    what i did:
    1. "Relocate Master" to g-drive. Success. Aperature still viewed all Files with all Meta Data normally.
    2. Collapsed "Library" in Projects Panel. Did not delete Projects. Did not delete any Photos.
    3. Preferences > Image Management > set new Aperature Library on g-drive.
    4. Uploaded new photos from a Canon and viewed them successfully.
    5. Ejected g-drive correctly.
what Aperature is not doing now:
    1. no Projects show up.
    2. no Referenced Photos show up.
    3. no Vaults show up. Note: the Vault was originally on MBP, but I foolishly did not set one up on g-drive before moving. I also have a back up Vault on a different g-drive that is, unfortunately, not up to date with all current photos before move.
    4. Aperature Library on g-drive is there but can not open any files in it. [note: item 3 above]
    5. Image files listed in g-drive but won't open in Aperature but do open in Preview or Gimp, etc.
    6. Aperature does not show any Vaults nor does it access Referenced Files.
    *Can you help ?*
*I guess these would be the questions:*
    1. How can I get the pics from the g-drive back into an Aperature Library with all the previous Meta Data attached to each Version?
    2. How do I get the Aperature Library - I put on the g-drive - to open in Aperature?
    3. If #1 is impossible - I guess I set up a Vault on the g-drive and move what I have from the back up Vault mentioned above.
    *Thanks for any advice !!!*

If I an not mistaken, I may have read through your pdf's quite a while ago. I am still trying to digest them and then apply them to my needs. If I had known that small projects may be faster and easier to manage than larger ones I would have done my imports quite differently. I chose to use Aperture in the first place to organize and add information to photos. I archive old photos. In particularly from 350th Fighter Group, WWII in the Mediterranean. So one "Project" of mine is =/-5000 images in the form of TIFF scans. I imported all of these into 1 project. Then I started applying metadata and keywwords like crazy. This allowed me to start to sort the photos into categories and find multiple version of the same image. I started making stacks of all the multiples. Then with smart albums and smart web sites I was able to create what might now be smaller projects. Since I gather information from others by sharing these photos on a website, You are able to see the smart websites here.
    http://web.me.com/vizcarraguitars/350thFighter_Group_Blog/350th_FG_Blog/350th_FGBlog.html
One cool thing is that various images reside in multiple smart webs based on common keyword. But now that I have all this organization, it seems it is time to put all my originals in a similar order via Aperture.
By the way, my files are reference files unless I make the mistake of importing them without leaving them in there original location.
I am thinking of starting over with blue folders. But I can't seem to get my head around it.

  • Installed Aperture 3 using existing iPhoto 11 library.  Did relocate masters to location outside of library and a handful remained in iPhoto masters folder.

    Hello,
I have a large iPhoto library and realized I was doing more with the tool that it was made to do.  Bought Aperture and was deligihted to find that I could relocate the masters outside of the library in a folder structure that made sense to me.  The masters are now in a folder structure that is organized by year/month so I can use it in other aps and/or back it up to the cloud.
After relocating the masters, I went back into the iPhoto libarary masters folder and saw that there were a handful (150 out of a 7K+ library) still there.  Some of them I do see within Aperature and some not.  What are these that got left over in the iPhoto Masters folder?  Are they ones that have been edited in iPhoto so the original got moved to the new location and these haven't?  I could see not pattern in them.  Some I know have never been edited, some have had a name change, some were deleted, etc.  There does not appear to be a reason.  Potential important info: the relocating masters function failed a couple times and restarting it got through the whole library.  Could these have just been random ones that Aperture choked on at the time?  If so, how do I get them into the referenced masters folder & out of these orphaned folders?
    Thanks in advance!

Like Aperture the 'edits' are in the database. These apps work as follows:
    Import an original
Edit it. Your decisions are stored as text commands in the SQL database. When you view the file it's essentially the original with your 'edits' overlaid on it. There is no edited file without exporting - that's what lossless processing is all about.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
The Aperture export dilaogue has even more options.
To dave you the bother of always having to export iPhoto automatically generates Previews. (In Aperture you can choose to generate them or not). What's a Preview? It's a sort of 'good-enough-for-most-things version of the shot, medium quality, medium size but missing lots of metadata - designed for use in scenarios like email, uploading and using in Word Processing.
Is your plan to back up the Library to the Cloud?

  • Aperture 3 Crashed; Can't relocate Masters despite time machine backup

I recently had a major crash of my OS system 10.6.8.  Not sure what happened, but essentially had to rebuild the directory with Diskwarrior.  When I tried to open Aperture 3, I received an error message and the inability to open Aperture.  After searching through the forums and the internet I essentially reinstalled Aperture 3 with the trial version and updated it to the most recent version.  My plugins (Nik Software) are no longer in Aperture as I thought this might have been part of the problem.  Nonetheless, I am missing a good deal of my projects from 2011.  I get the YELLOW TRIANGLE and the message that the master is not there.  So, I have rebuilt the database library (using command-option) and now Aperture is reporting that the images in those projects never existed.  NOW, I have fortunately been using time machine to backup regularly.  However, when I go back to a recent backup and restore of the Aperture library, those projects are still missing!
I am going insane thinking about this pictures and the missing data.  Shouldn't Time Machine saved the all the files prior to the crash?  Is there some place/other locations that I should be RESTORING besides the Aperture Library?
I look forward to hearing from you guys and everyone's suggestions, because I am driving myself crazy!

    thanks for the reply Frank:
Masters.  I do not know.  I left it as the default.  I assume that means managed?
Error message was the LONG error code with the jist of it being related to what sounds like a PLUGIN error. I don't have the EXACT coding right now as I am not home.  I've googled the code +/- other stuff on it and according to discussions here and elsewhere (albeit all archived), it looks like it was related to my plugins.
as far as the restore is concerned, I am POSITIVE that the restored library was the NEW library not the original.  But keep in mind, Time Machine only lets me restore the backup to the exact place where the file was before.  I am just worried that somehow Time Machine backup hosed my Aperture library somewhere along the way.  This is why I was wondering if there is something else I need to restore with my time machine backup besides the library file/database itself?
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Trying To Understand My Masters Situation

I have over 40,000 photos managed by Aperture. They include a mixture of my old iPhoto library and purely Aperture images. They are managed as referenced masters. I wish to move the photos to a new hard drive and have come to a puzzling issue which I need help understanding before proceed and perhaps make a mistake.
I thought I had imported the iPhoto library some time ago. It has been on a separate external drive (I will call it drive 1) and the Aperture masters are on another external drive (drive 2). Examining the files on drive 2 the iPhoto master files appear to be there. By using Get Info it is apparent the file sizes are correct for them being masters. This does indicate that I have imported the iPhoto Librarty at some point in the past.
When I selected all photos in Aperture >File >Relocate Masters I get a dialog box which informs me that one or more of the masters are unavailable.
So I connected drive 1 and repeated the process. This time I get a dialog telling me that if I relocate files in (drive1) that it may corrupt the iPhoto Library and asks oif I wish to relocate anyway. This indicates to me that Aperture has been using the iPhoto files as the masters even though there appear to be the same iPhoto photos also appearing with the rest of the Aperture masters on drive 2.
How do I determine the exact situation? Should I import the iPhoto library and somehow deal with the possibility of duplicates appearing on drive 2? Or4 should I just do the relocate masters process and not care about removing the iPhoto library from its current location - I don't use iPhoto aftr all?
    Need some experienced feedback please
    Aperture 3, Snow Leopard.

Thank you foir getting back to me but I already know which drives my photos are on. The iPhoto photo masters are on both drive one (in the iPhoto library) and a duplicate set of the same photos are on drive two along saide the more recent Aperture only masters.
Aperture seems to be connected to the Aperture only masters on drive 2 as it should but doesn't appear to be connected to the iPhoto masters on that drive. Instead it is connected to the originals still in the old iPhoto Library on drive 1.
I am uncertain as to whether it is best to (a) attempt to connect to the unconnected iPhoto masters on drive 1, (b) start again by importing the iPhoto library into Aperture making sure it copies the masters onto drive 2 & connect to them, or (c) Relocate masters leaving the existing structure intact. It means the old iPhoto library will be deleted in the process. I do not use iPhoto so that doesn't worry me but I am concerned that the library might get damaged on the way to the new location.
Since Aperture works fine with the current arrangement I lean toward choice (c) but wonder if choice (a) might save confusion in the furture.

  • Using the same Referenced Masters across Multiple External Hard Drives?

I have a large (2TB) desktop external hard drive that I am now using as the source of my referenced masters for Aperture.
I would like to copy this reference library ("My Photo Library") to a small, mobile external hard drive to use "on-the-go". But, if possible, I'd like to continue using the desktop external when I'm at home.
What's the best way to do this? Should I just copy "My Photo Library" from the desktop external drive to the mobile external and Relocate Masters? But then, how do I switch back to using the desktop drive when I'm home without having to Relocate Masters every time (my library is quite large: 17K+ photos of 8-21MB each). Is there a way to "trick" Aperture into thinking that both drives are the same drive???

I have been working with Final Cut express while it has been installed on my WD hard Drive.
I have been capturing and editing my film through the WD hard drive very happily up until now, but now it is full with 10 of the tapes (and the application), and so I am now wanting to save the rest of my tapes on the LaCie.

  • Unavailable Masters

    Hi,
I've got a problem with importing images into my main library. I took a few thousand shots at my brother's wedding and imported them to my MacBook's copy of Aperture. I exported a copy of that project on the DVD and kept a local copy.
Once I got home, I've tried to import the project into my iMac's Aperture. Everything appeared to go ok except that all of the images have a small arrow pointing to 2 o'clock with a yellow triangular warning sign. I believe that this means that the masters are unavailable, but I am not sure.
I am unable to consolidate or relocate masters and I can't manage referenced files. The images are intact in the approj file.
Finally, the laptop's hard drive has since died, so re-exporting the original project is not an option.
    Can anyone help me, please?
    Thanks and best regards,
    Dan

Odd that it's won't let you manage referenced masters when it thinks they are missing, not sure why that would happen. If nothing else works, you could always just copy them out of the project and reimport the masters by themselves.
I've always transferred lots of projects between my laptop and desktop using both referenced and managed masters, never had a problem with it so far.

  • How do I reconnect my masters from multiples libraries?

Spring must be coming early...I've decided to clean up my Aperture libraries!
I have multiple libraries, none of which are totally unique, and may have photos contained in other libraries (dont ask me why...)
I want to construct one library that has a total set of all the images across all my libraries
    Potential issues
1 - Probably need to reconnect masters - what is the best way when I have multiple external drives? (which may have been renamed since they were first created)
2 - Some photos are contained in iPhoto
3 - Some photos were held in 'Nikon Picture Project'
What is the best method of achieving my consolidated image library>?

Consolidate all Masters into each Library first.  Then merge the Libraries.  The weed out dupes, organize, etc.  The relocate Masters wherever you want.
The merged Library doesn't have to be on your system disk.  Any FW800 or faster disk will be OK for setting it up and housekeeping.  You could then -- just as an example -- relocate your Masters to the same external drive, and then move the (smaller) Library to your system drive.

  • I've moved my Aperture library to another computer, and masters are referencing an old path name.  How can I update these references?  Reloctating masters does not work in this case :(

I've moved my Aperture library from one computer to another using Finder.
I merged the library with one which was already on the computer.
Now, the photos I imported have reference to the old path name on my old computer.
How can I update these references as "Relocate Masters" does not work in this case?

Just one suggestion to be able to reconnect all at once:
Create a smart album containing the images with missing masters:
File -> New ->  Smart Album,     and add a rule: File Status is "Missing"     (or File Status is "offline")
Then select the images in this album and go to the File menu:
and select:   File -> Locate referenced File
If you are lucky, Aperture will reconnect all at once, if you point the first image version to its counterpart.
