Relocate openbox window borders

hi everyone.
i recently installed openbox on my netbook. and since its aspect ratio is at 16:9 it seems more efficient to me to locate the window-decorations to the left or right side of the windows.
so my question is: does openbox allow this? i know that openbox allows to hide the decoration all together but that would just be weird workaround for me.
so is there any setting i could apply?
thanks in advance :-)

I also had the desire to do so, but googling for "openbox title bar position" gave me no cookies. The only WM where I have seen this and did it myself is the Bespin theme for KDE4. I wonder if that is can be done in openbox, that would give me a huge boost to switch from KDE4.

  • [SOLVED] openbox window borders and alt tab

    There are two (atleast) things i'd like to fix in openbox (and lxde). I haven't found any info on it.
    1) Window borders are only one pixel. It's hard to resize windows and very hard with touchpad. I have room for it on a 1400x1050 resolution. On kde I have 6 pixels. How can I widen the borders?
    2) Alt + tab cycles through the windows on the current desktop only. I would like it to cycle through all windows on all desktops. I know I can middleclick on the background, but I'd like to alt tab too. How do I do that?

    For 2 : Add this to your keybindings in rc.xml
    <keybind key="W-Tab">
    <action name="NextWindow">
    <allDesktops>yes</allDesktops>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="W-S-Tab">
    <action name="PreviousWindow">
    <allDesktops>yes</allDesktops>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    This will use the Super+Tab and Super+Shift+Tab to move between windows across all desktops. You can still use Alt+Tab and Alt+Shift+Tab to move between windows within the same desktop

  • [Solved] LXDE missing window borders (or decoratioins, widget?)

    Hello,
    The LXDE runs fine on my newly built arch for a couple of days, and then I must have done something (e.g. upgraded or uninstalled some packages) and now I can still log into LXDE by using slim login manager or startx command, but none of the applications will have the window borders and I am not able to move the application window around or minimize/resize the window.
    Here is my .xinitrc file
    [sgeuser@sge00 ~]$ cat .xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f

    Thanks. The problem is solved.
    Both openbox and lxsession were installed. The only thing missing was the missing libsvg library. Here is the relevant entries in /var/log/pacman.log (when I installed the libsvg package just now)
    # egrep -ri svg /var/log/pacman.log
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman --color auto -S extra/librsvg'
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] installed librsvg (1:2.37.0-1)
    so somehow it wasn't needed on a working lxde since 08/28 when the system was installed, and right after 3.10.10 kernel upgrade(Sat., 8/31), it is required to have the windows manager working properly. 3.10.10 linux kernel change log from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-3.10.10 did not return anything relevant.
    Anyway thanks for the input and I'm glad that the problem was solved quickly.

  • Smartform window borders not appearing in dot matrix printer Epson FX-1170

    Hi all. I have a smartform with boxes (made out of windows and its borders) and texts inside those boxes. In the print preview, it shows the window borders. However, when the actual printout comes, the window borders do not appear. I have tried to change the 'output options' of the windows - I tried using millimeters, centimeters, point, lines, as well as inches, for the unit and also tried changing the width, but it still doesn't appear. Has anyone encountered a similar problem with dot matrix printers? Please help.

    Hi,
      the dot-matrix printers cannot "draw" lines and pictures, so, it is not capable of drawing the vertical and horizontal lines you have defined in the smartform windows. I think that you need to write the horizontal lines using the '-' or '_' characters but I am not sure about the vertical ones. Of course, as you realize, this requires big development effort.

  • Can I run Firefox in chromeless mode (ie. with no Windows borders etc)

    I think chromeless mode is the correct term to use. Basically I want to run Firefox 8 without the usual Windows borders. For example to run it un-maximised but looking just as it does when maximised.
    If I'm not being clear please ask questions.
    Thanks

    Current Firefox versions on the Windows platform are only available official as 32 bit versions, so that shouldn't be a problem.

  • Window borders are not displaying.

    Hi Experts,
    while testing Window borders are not displaying but in se71 T.Code,
    in menu option Utilities -> Printing Test it is printing the boarders.
    Please help me in this regard.

    Hi,
    In SE71, that is a print preview and it will show the window border to know which window is printing what value, but when you print the actuval one no window will give you the Borders,
    If you want the Border, then you need to mention the paragrapgh format, in the Paragrapgh format Press Outline tab there maintain the attributes, and assign this to the window

  • [SOLVED]My Nautilus does not has window borders!!

    Hi,
    I have installed ArchLinux for the first time. I have installed GNOME (GNOME Shell + Mutter + Metacity + Nautilus + ETC...)
    I noticed that among all installed applications Nautilus is the only application that does not have Window Borders (Decorations) and if I wanted to close it I have to press SUPER key in my keyboard then in the activity (dashboard) I click that X appearing to it.
    Is there a way to solve this problem?
    Thank you,
    Mohammad

    As far as i know you can define the size of the titlebar in the theme. The default theme can be found in /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/metacity-1/metacity-theme-3.xml.
    Back when i used gnome shell, i edited the theme for not to show the titlebar, which is the complete opposite of what you try to do. But maybe you can find a way to edit the file so that the statusbar is always shown.
    This part of the file is relevant for the maximised titlebars:
    <frame_geometry name="max" has_title="false" title_scale="medium" parent="normal" rounded_top_left="false" rounded_top_right="false">
    <distance name="left_width" value="0" />
    <distance name="right_width" value="0" />
    <distance name="left_titlebar_edge" value="0"/>
    <distance name="right_titlebar_edge" value="0"/>
    <distance name="title_vertical_pad" value="0"/>
    <border name="title_border" left="0" right="0" top="0" bottom="0"/>
    <border name="button_border" left="0" right="0" top="0" bottom="0"/>
    <distance name="bottom_height" value="0" />
    </frame_geometry>

  • [SOLVED] Centre openbox window title

    Hi,
    I was wondering if it is possible to centre the title on openbox windows, since both the Openbox and Arch Wikis don't mention this. My current title layout is: DLIMC. This puts the window title to the left, and although this is perfectly functional, it's not exactly what I want. I know it's possible somehow, because in other instances of openbox (on Crunchbang, for example) the window title is centred.
    Thanks in advance for any ideas/suggestions!
    Last edited by dluco (2013-09-01 17:35:04)

    It's controlled by the theme. They're in /usr/share/themes/theme_name/openbox-3/themerc. In that file, look for a line with window.label.text.justify and set it to center. If there's no such line, simply add it
    window.label.text.justify: center

  • Widths of Window borders

    I have a program which is a plugin for Photoshop.
    It receives the size of a document from Photoshop, and I need to know what the Window size is. My main Window is a JFrame, which extends Frame, which extends Window. I set the Window size by using setBounds(x, y, w, h). Where can I find the widths of the Window borders, including the title bar? Or is there a way of setting the Window size by using the inside size?
    Thanks in advance for your feedback!

    I noticed that the widths of the Window borders are different in Windows XP and Windows Vista.

  • Openbox and borders

    Hey guys, I am trying to set windows up in Openbox to have borders without decorations - I cant seem to get it to work though. The settings I've adjusted suggest it should work but for some reason the borders still dont work without decor.
    I've set up urxvt to start without decorations, and thats fine. The <keepborder> option in rc.xml is set to "yes".
    Is there something else I'm missing?
    Also for some reason when I set firefox in the applications section of rc.xml to start without decor it still loads them, is there a secific problem with firefox that prevents this option from working? All the other applications load without decor

    Works fine here, the only thing that is (slightly) annoying me is that the windows leave a small space on the bottom of the screen, more or less of the size the titlebar used to be.
    The most relevant parts in my rc.xml:
    <keepBorder>yes</keepBorder>
    <animateIconify>no</animateIconify>
    <font place="ActiveWindow">
    <name>Source Sans Pro</name>
    <size>1</size>
    <!-- font size in points -->
    <weight>Bold</weight>
    <!-- 'bold' or 'normal' -->
    <slant>Normal</slant>
    <!-- 'italic' or 'normal' -->
    </font>
    <font place="InactiveWindow">
    <name>Source Sans Pro</name>
    <size>1</size>
    <!-- font size in points -->
    <weight>Normal</weight>
    <!-- 'bold' or 'normal' -->
    <slant>Normal</slant>
    <!-- 'italic' or 'normal' -->
    </font>
    <application type="normal">
    <decor>no</decor>
    </application>
    <application type="dialog">
    <decor>no</decor>

  • KDE window borders disappear when 2 or more users logged in

    I spent a very frustrating Saturday afternoon trying to debug what I thought was a corrupted kde install.  In short, if someone would try this & see if you get the same results, I'd appreciate some feedback:
    - Logged in through KDM as a regular user or root
    - After KDE is loaded, click on the Kicker button > Switch User > Start new session
    - Login as another user (or root)
    - At this point, when I look at any window in my new KDE session, its borders are gone... IE I have no buttons or borders showing with app I'm using, thus I can't click on the X or other buttons to minimise/close/resize the app in question
    - It makes no difference which account I log into first...I experimented with trying to log in as root first, then as a user or vice versa
    I tried to install the user account several times using various methods but the issue persisted.  I ended up trying an entirely different account and saw the same results which made me realize that my account I'd started with is not corrupted at all.  This leads me to believe there is either a strange bug in KDE or some system setting I'm using is forcing this behaviour in my installation.  I'd like to find out which is true or not true.
    Feedback welcome.

    webweave,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
    Generally, as discussed above, having 2 mount points for the same disk in the volumes folder won't prevent a successful backup. But in your case (#15!), that's a problem. More often than not, they are being created by Time Machine because you already have one or more instances of the Time Capsule disk mounted on your desktop. Ejecting the TC disk when it is not needed is the best way to avoid creating multiple mount points.
    If you have any further questions, please post them in a new thread. You can refer back to this discussion with a link if necessary.
    Cheers!

  • Changing openbox window label font.

    So, i would like to use a custom font in my openbox theme, but i looked around on the arch forums and the openbox wiki and i can't seem to find how to change the font for the menu and windows label, does someone here know how to achieve such a thing ? Thanks.

    Use obconf, or edit the /openbox/rc.xml file with your font changes

  • Openbox Window Manipulation

    I'm using an openbox setup, with no GNOME or KDE. I'm using feh, thunar, xterm, etc. The only GNOME item I'm using is the keyring.
    The long and the short of it is I essentially always want a terminal on my desktop. I know that there are a number of ways to do this, but I haven't found a one that makes the terminal resistant to minimizing on a "show desktop". So, my question is does someone have a way to prevent the window from minimizing/being registered as minimizable? The alternative that I was thinking about was is there a way to change how it registers, for example make the terminal seem like a dock or a panel instead of a window?
    What I've tried:
    1. Using xprop to remove the _NET_WM_ACTIONS field so that minimize was not listed.
    2. Mapping a wmctrl -b remove hidden -r <target id> remove hidden action to the same keybinding as the show desktop keybinding. (It had no effect, but the same command afterwards issued from a new terminal showed the original target terminal).
    3. Mapping a script that used wmctrl to both toggle the show desktop action and then show the terminal. (failed at minimizing the desktop).
    4. Digging through the xterm (which is the terminal in question, by the by) man pages for anything on type of window, but did not find anything there.
    5. Checking out the override redirection concept (took it from wbar; from reading the code comments that's what seems to do keep the WM off it), but that seems to need to be set in the source and compiled in.
    6. Asking on IRC (!give majiq f).
    Edit: Being an IRC noob, I wasn't able to get to a proper #openbox. I got to a ##openbox, which had two others in it, but I don't think that's the right one...pointers on that also accepted.
    Other ideas:
    A. wmctrl -b has a modal option, which I don't know what it does.
    B. Maybe there's something that I can do with Xresources that will do the trick?
    C. Possibly I can patch the openbox code to reference the _NET_WM_ACTIONS field if someone can point my in the direction for how to interface with that setup?
    D. One thought I had, but it'd get out of control, was create a new desktop to go to instead of actually showing the desktop, but I don't know if that's too great an idea cause things might get out of hand...
    I've been trying for many hours and played with many ideas, but I'd really like to get this done somehow because I think others would benefit from it as well. Note that it doesn't have to be a prebuiltin option; you can suggest making the option, but if you do, a push in the right direction is appreciated. Also, if there's a program (minimalistic and light at that) that can toggle this for me, please point it out.
    Also, let's work under the assumption that the following responses are fail "Don't minimize everything", "Don't use show desktop", and please minimize "Use XYZ WM instead".
    Thinking hats on?

    Friends, Romans, distromen, thank you. The quest is over. Credit goes to square and mthode, for (in the latter case, eventually) leading me to xdotool. My solution is as follows:
    In a configuration file call desktop_items.conf, place the titles of the desired desktop items. Then, I replace the show desktop keybinding command to my script:
    Edit: Added comments
    #!/bin/bash
    #a file to see if the minimize state was triggered; rm-ed every startup
    lockfile="/tmp/."$USER"_desktop_show_lock"
    #if the desktop was minimized
    if [ -e $lockfile ]; then
    #sometimes, you start doing things after minimizing and you want to minimize again. I gave it fifteen minutes.
    if [ $(( $(date +%s) - $(stat --format="%Y" $lockfile) )) -gt $((1*15)) ]; then
    rm $lockfile
    $0
    exit
    fi
    #Bring everything back up
    for id in $( wmctrl -l | cut -f 1 -d ' ' ); do
    xdotool windowmap $id
    done
    #Burn the lockfile
    rm $lockfile
    else #When you want to minimize
    #Use the show desktop feature
    wmctrl -k on
    #Then unhide everything you wanted to keep
    for pattern in $(cat ~/.config/openbox/desktop_items.conf ); do
    for id in $( wmctrl -l | grep "$pattern" | cut -f 1 -d " "); do
    xdotool windowactivate $id
    done
    done
    #And note the fact that you minimized.
    touch $lockfile || xmessage "Touch fail"
    fi
    exit 0
    I realized that upon activating the other desktop windows (such as dclock and xterm), the "wmctrl -k off" would have no effect, so I just told it to restore everything. It's not a perfect script, mostly because of the temp file that I use (couldn't figure out a good workaround / didn't care enough to find a good workaround). As a note, devilspie seems like it can do it, if I were to spend time trying to figure it out. As another note, I think override redirect is really the best way to go, but I can't figure out how to change it.

  • Openbox- Window config issue

    I have openbox and urxvt set up where I have urxvtc open a fullscreen, borderless, decor-less, and transparent instance on desktop 4 using the config from here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Urx … figuration
    This is all nice and good except when I want to open new terminal windows, I'd prefer to keep using urxvtc instead of another terminal emulator. Is there a way to assign the first instance of urxvtc (upon starting openbox) a new "name" here:     <application name="urxvt"> so when I want to open additional normal-sized urxvt windows they don't show up on desktop4 fullscreen, borderless, decor-less, and transparent?
    I've tried searching but I can't come up with the set of keywords that is what I'm looking for . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for!
    Do you know if I would also have to update my .Xdefaults and replace urxvt*etc to the new name?
    edit: seems the answer to that question is a resounding "yes."
