Relocating Image Folders to External Drive where LR library resides...

I have 12,500 images on my main drive in my Pictures Folder (MAC), and the LR library/catalog file (also on my main drive) automatically looks to that folder when I open LR. But I just moved my LR Folder (library, etc.) from my main drive to an external drive. When I opened LR again and chose the library on the external drive, what shows up in FOLDERS down the left side is my PICTURES folder and all my RAW file folders from my main drive. I've already made a physical copy (by drag/drop) of each of those RAW folders onto the external drive, but how to I get LR to recognize/access those, and not the PICTURES folder on the main drive?
Thanks for your help,
Brenda

The easiest way is to "loose" the images and then "find" them again. You could remove the images from the drive so LR fails to locate the images, but it's easier just to rename to folder on the main drive that contains all your images.
Then start Lightroom. All your folders will be in red. Right click on the main folder and click "locate missing files" then point to the new location.

  • Adding Music when away from external Drive where Itunes Library is stored

I have a macbook and an Ipod 60gb. I have come across a slight frustration in Itunes. I have limited space on my internal drive and as such have my iTunes music stored on an external hard drive. I frequently am away from this drive when I import a cd into itunes. The problem, itunes switches where my library is stored from the external drive to the internal drive. Is there an option that someone knows about that would keep this from happening?
I have a suggestion for itunes, why not make an option to add music to a briefcase folder, and when connected to the external drive add it to the main library. This would allow for music to be imported to the computer and then be added to the main storage source when available.
If anyone knows a way I send a product suggestions to apple please let me know, as I have a few that would like to suggest.

no, if iTunes can't find its drive/folder, it defaults to creating one within your Home directory's Music folder.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Unable to see .zmg image on USB external drive

While attempting to image a Tecra S2, I used a bootdisk to image the laptop via the USB external hard drive. The image file was not viewable but all other images on the external drive were. Tried renaming, relocating image, recopying the file to the drive but same in all instances. The file could not be seen from Linux. The image size is 3.2 GB and the likely original source of the image to the server was from a burned CD. Any thoughts on why this file was not viewable but all others were.

  • Can't get hold of my relocated masters on an external drive?

All of a sudden I am not any longer able to get in touch with my relocated masters (on an external drive). I can SEE them, but is not allowed to "consolidate" them or use them for f. inst. EXPORT to 3rd part (Smugmug etc). The drive as such is mechanically ok, well functioning, and in Finder I can see all of the files (masters)...which in Aperture are having a "RED" dot in the small logo in the corner of the photo, indicating that they are held on an external drive...Would be most thankful for any help/advide about how to solve this problem, thanks.

Thanks a lot Frank for your willingness to help. YES, you are right (just did not the right expression: BADGE for offline referenced original" I have quite a few of such files, in order to economize with the space on my system HD (Macbook Pro), and I'll have to continue that way in the light of my recent investment - a NIKON D800, the files of which, as you will know, are huge.
The whole problem started when I had to find a new hosting place in the light of Apples closing down of "Me.com". When I closed my account with Apple with a view of leaving Me.com and start moving the majority of my photos to Smugmug, for unknown reasons I ended up with 2 (TWO) databases within Aperture - most recent version. And a big number of my MASTER photos held on an external drive all of a sudden proved to be unreachable, however, I could/can SEE them (with the badge in question) when in Aperture AND also in Finder - but can't CONSOLIDATE them/get them back to the appropriate PROJETS within Aperture.
Meanwhile I have tried to bring things back to normal by merging the two databases, and or by a "REPAIR" database - all steps so far in vain.
Thus, I am nowin Aperture left with two databases with a lot of referenced files scattered all over and outside the proper projects to which they belong. AND the MASTERS of the said files, or most of them, remaining on the external drive, where I can't get hold of them....
Having tried your proposed step - in vain - I realize that it is a stupid situation, and fully understand if you have no more proposals to me....

  • ITunes are not seeing my external drive as the library

Hi, I'm struggling to get music on my iPhone.
All our music is stored on an external hard drive that we use with our iPods. My wife and I recently got iPhones and we're trying to put some music on them.
iTunes is setup to get the music from the hard drive but for some reason I can not access it any more. My problem is that iTunes are not seeing my external drive as the library.
Here's how I've set my iTunes up:
    Edit - Preferences - Advance
iTunes media folder location: J:\Lacie_iTunes (that's where the music is stored)
Now this worked perfect with our iPods but for some reason iTunes is not seeing the music anymore.
In iTunes, if I click on Library and then Music all I get is a screen to either download music (with tutorials) or import CD's (with tutorials).
I'm using iTunes 9 and Windows 7, the iTunes version on my wife's laptop is an older version but I do not think that that is the problem.
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

Setting the iTunes Media folder in preferences only moves the content to the external drive. The library database files will still be at the default location of ...\My Documents\My Music\iTunes. When you move the portable drive from one machine to the other you'll have access to the content, but not the database hence you get an empty library and the prompt to add some content.
See this recent post for pointers on how to rearrange the database & media folders so that everything is truly portable. I don't have time just now to rewrite the instructions for your specific drive & folder names but if it's not clear I'll pop by later and write them out again.

  • PC to Mac with external drive as main library

I recently switched from PC (Dell Inspiron) to Mac (MacBook) and am having some serious difficulties getting my iTunes to cooperate.
I used an external drive as my main iTunes library on my PC. I would like to continue doing this with my new Mac because my library is quite large. I know it is not as simple as pointing to the folder on the external HD from within the Mac. I have read all the posts out there and none of the address my issue specifically.
To reiterate, I currently am using an external HD with my PC that contains my iTunes library. I am now using my Macbook as my main computer and want to continue using the same external drive because my library is too large to import to the internal HD. How do I get the iTunes on my MacBook to read (point to?) the external drive where all of my media (music, podcasts, TV, Movies, Games, etc) reside without losing any information and/or files?
    Please help...thanks!
    Brian

I pretty much did the same thing (switched from PC to Mac) and had the same issue and this is how I set it:
go to preferences then click on the advanced tab, then on general
then for the folder just click 'change' and set it to be what your folder with all your music is on (on the external). I unchecked the 'copy files to itunes music folder...' as well (not sure this is needed, but didn't want to experiment it copying everything again)
then I went to File > Add to Library, selected the same folder and done. It will take a bit as it goes through the whole library. I guess after this you could go back to preferences and check that copy to itunes folder so any future additions get put on the external.
    I hope that helps.

  • Synchronizing folders with external drives

I just upgraded to Lightroom 2 and I'm having trouble following the file management workflow that I used to use with Lightroom 1.  Basically what I did before was:
Import photos to either my internal hard drive or to my external Lightroom drive, depending on whether I was at my desk or out and about.  If I imported them to my internal drive, I'd eventually want to get them onto my external drive when I get to my desk.
Run a shell script that rsyncs the internal drive photos to the exact same structure on the external drive.  This effectively merges what I had on my internal drive into my filesystem on my external drive.
Then I'd delete my folders from my internal drive, and when Lightroom couldn't find the folders, I'd do the Find Missing Folder thing and point it at the external drive.  It would realize that I have selected a folder that was already in Lightroom, so it basically just re-pointed the missing files that were just copied and everything worked.
Unfortunately if I try this with Lightroom 2, it says "The selected folder or a folder it contains is already in Lightroom." when I try to locate the missing folder.  And while it is quite true that the folder is already in Lightroom, that folder contains all the images from the deleted folder that I just copied over.  I'm stuck and I basically have ~200 images from various dates that have been interspersed in my Lightroom drive, but Lightroom has no idea that they're there.  I tried running Synchronize Folders on it, but that just made it worse, since it didn't realize the files were duplicates and so now I have two copies of my images.  The old copies are still broken, but they have all my metadata and adjustments.
Here's a small illustration of what's going on:
    Before:
    ~/Lightroom2009
    1234.dng
    9876.dng
    /Volumes/Lightroom2009
    4567.dng
    5555.dng
    After:
    ~/Lightroomempty
    /Volumes/Lightroom2009
    1234.dng
    4567.dng
    5555.dng
    9876.dng
Does anybody have a similar workflow to me that actually works?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

    Hi CPMTECH,
To configure the Windows Time Service on first forest root domain controller
Log on to the domain controller.
Type the following command to display the time difference between the local computer and a target computer, and then press ENTER:
    w32tm /stripchart /computer:target/samples:1/dataonly
Where target specifies the DNS name or IP address of the NTP server that you are comparing the local computer's time against, such as time.windows.com and 1 specifies the number of time samples that will be returned from the target computer. In this example, only one sample will be returned to test basic NTP communication.
Open UDP port 123 for outgoing traffic if needed.
Open UDP port 123 (or a different port you have selected) for incoming NTP traffic.
Type the following command to configure the PDC emulator and then press ENTER:
    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:peers /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update
Peers specifies the list of DNS names and/or IP addresses of the NTP time source that the PDC emulator synchronizes from. For example, you can specify time.windows.com. When specifying multiple peers, use a space as the delimiter and enclose them in quotation marks.

  • Help - moved itunes folders to external drive and now my itunes is totally

A few months ago, in order to free up space on my c drive, i had to purchase an external drive - everything i installed via itunes since that date has been on the hard drive and everything was fine.
Last night i needed more room on my C drive so i stupidly moved the remaining itunes folders from my C drive to my F drive - unfortunately, when i opened itunes it was blank.
i've tried a few things - including adding the folder from the F drive - and that retrieved about 80% of my music/videos and the last playlists i had - however, they were all missing songs - even if all the songs that should be included remained on my itunes
i began the tedious process of manually adding files back in but soon realized this doesn't help itunes consider this the same ipod as what's still on my actual ipod.
*What I'd like to do (if possible) is to wipe itunes clean and somehow restore everything on my ipod into itunes so that i retrieve not only the songs and videos but also the playlists that i've spent way too much time building. At this point i fear that the various components to my ipod are in too many files on my external drive to be easily restored another way (though if i'm wrong please let me know)*
sadly (as this story might suggest) I am borderline computer illiterate - I've read a few posts suggesting some sort of software online (something the apple help line also made an "off the record" remark about) - but I can't for the life of me figure out which i would use or how to do this without risking the contents of my existing ipod (which has the playlists and songs/video I want to reestablish).
*Can anyone possibly suggest how to best handle this and walk me through it in painstakingly basic and specific detail? I would be forever grateful.*
    Thanks

iTunes uses the iTunes Library files - in particular the iTunes Library.itl file - to keep track of where your song files are located as well as playlist and related information.
Most likely in moving your folders around iTunes has been confused to such an extent that it created a new Library file. With a bit of luck you might still be able to find the old file which would restore your old Library.
So the first thing you want to do is look around your computer and make a note of any iTunes Library.itl files you can find. Generally speaking you'll find them in the iTunes folders on your system and depending on how you've been moving the folders - i.e. whether you "cut" them or "copied" them - you may still find at least one one on your F: drive and some on your C: drive.
Having noted where they are you know want to check each of them out as described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base. In following those instructions you want to select the Choose Library option and use the pop-up window that appears to zero in on the various .itl files you've located.
Remember that each Library file will show a different Library in iTunes - perhaps slightly different, perhaps completely different - and if the first one isn't what you're looking for you'll have to close iTunes and repeat the procedure by selecting one of the other .itl's.
    Post back for any clarification.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

  • Checking to see if iPhoto images transferred to external drive worked

I have decided to copy photos from my iPhoto '09 Library to an external Seagate harddrive. I want to still keep the originals on my MacBook Pro, but I am looking at downloading Lightroom 5 and starting to use it from 2014 going forward, instead of using iPhoto. Before I start working in a new program, I want to be sure all my images are backed up using a program I can operate.  I double-clicked on my home folder and then the Pictures folder to open the iPhoto library.  I right clicked on the file iPhoto Library, hit copy and then opened my Seagate external drive and hit paste. It took about 3 hours to copy and when I hit "get info" on the folder within the Seagate external drive, I see the same number of GBs of information as is in my iPhoto Library on my harddrive.
Here is the question: I want to be sure that,in fact, all my photos have been successfully copied onto my harddrive. When I double click on the folder in the harddrive which is titled, iPhoto Library, I see my iPhoto icon launch from my dock at the bottom of my MacBook, and across the top I see that iPhoto is the open program. Of course, all my events are where they always were, but I'm not sure I am looking at the events in the iPhoto on my harddrive or on my Seagate external drive.
    Did I do something wrong?

I only want to use this external drive as a back up, not to be a default library. I still want to keep the default on my MacBook Pro. I only want to open the external drive to make sure that my photos have all been copied and are being stored there.
Then option launch again to change the default back to the internal drive
A second question I have, is when I download more photos into the iPhoto library on my laptop, or into what I hope to be a Lightroom Library, starting 2014, then when I hook up the Seagate External Hard Drive to back up next time, will it re-write all the previous photos which have currently been backed up prior to 2014, or will it just start with whatever photos (or new Lightroom Library) it does not recognize?
No idea - nothing in the standard Mac software will "re-write" anything - if you have backup software of some sort running then it will do what ever it does - unless you have something special set up nothing will change in the copy on the external drive until you specifically do something to change it
And note that LR and iPhoto can not share a library of the same photos - to use your photos with LR you must export the originals (or current depending on what you want) from iPhoto and then import those into LR

  • Best way to copy large folders to external drive?

What is the best way to transfer large folders across to external drives?
I'm trying to clean up my internal hard drive and want to copy a folder (including its sub folders) of approx 10GB of video files to an external firewire drive.
I've tried drag and drop in finder (both copy and move) and it gets stuck on a particular file and then aborts the whole process.
    1. Surely it should copy everything it can, and simply not copy the problem file.
    2. Is there a way I can do copy and verify, a bit like when I burn a disk so I can be sure the video files have transferred safely before I delete them from my internal drive?
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

What you are trying to do makes perfect sense to me and I have done the same prior to getting myself a Time Machine system in place.
    1. Surely it should copy everything it can, and simply not copy the problem file.
The fact that it is getting stuck on a particular file suggests that there is a problem with it. Try to identify which one it is and deal with that file on it's own. It could be that there is a disk error where that file is stored.
    2. Is there a way I can do copy and verify....
The copy process you are using does that implicitly as I understand it.

  • Sparse Bundle Image Unmounts from External Drive (NTFS)

This is a duplicate of https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2135602?start=0&tstart=0 but the problem still exists in Mountain Lion. I have NTFS-3G ans FUSE for OSX installed to mount my external drive. I copied a sparse bundle image over to the drive. Now when I try to mount the drive it instantly unmounts. Disk Utility says it mounts Successfully, even though it unmounts. Can anyone help me figure out how I can mount the sparse bundle image while it lives on my external NTFS drive?

    madhusudhan wrote:
    Thanks for response V.K
Not sure what you mean what sparsebundle?
I want to know what sparse bundle you are talking about.
the sparse bundle with your filevaulted home directory which was originally located in /users/yourusername? or some other sparse bundle?
I was using FileVault. Probably I may have put the trailing slash (can't remember as it was almost two weeks back).
The External HDD is FAT formatted drive. I haven't done any changes to permissions.
you should not be using a FAT drive for this. move everything over to an HFS+ formatted drive. and don't use a FAT drive for backing up OS X. FAT is an old file system which does not support many features needed by OS X.
so what you need to do is put all the stuff you listed (token, Info.plist, Info.bckup and the bands folder) into a folder and give that folder the name username.sparsebundle where username is your old username. then you need to add a bundle flag to that folder. you need setFile command for that. it's not a part of the basix OS X install. you can install XCode (it's on the SL install DVD) or use Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ to install just the setFile command. then run the command
    setFile -a -B /path/to/unsername.sparsebundle
This will restore the bundle bit to it and it will look like an actual sparse bundle. you can then try mounting it by double-clicking it. you'll have to enter your old user password. if it works you are in luck and can reuse it. if it doesn't work it's most likely corrupt beyond repair and you should trash it. you can try fixing it first but it's almost never possible with corrupt encrypted sparse bundles. but try mounting it first and see if it simply mounts. post back with the results.
    Advance thanks for assistance.

  • Recovery Software for Disk Image Backup on External Drive

Hello. I am currently running OSX Yosemite on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. However, before I upgraded from OSX Maverick I installed a SSD as a boot drive and moved my original Toshiba HDD to the optical bay for media storage. Before the installation, I purchased a LaCie 1TB external hard drive, formatted it, then dragged the entire Toshiba HDD image from the desktop to the external HD. That image is visible on the external HD but is inaccessible by Disk Utility, whether I use it from the HD, the SSD, or the Installation DVD. All scans and attempts to mount and open the image fail. I realize now I made a mistake by not cloning the Toshiba HDD onto the external HD before starting but the image size (on the external HD) is 187GB, which corresponds with a somewhat compressed ~220GB (the original size of the Toshiba HDD). Therefore, it seems as though the files are present and intact, albeit currently inaccessible.
Is there any way to recover the files from the disk image, i.e. via Data Recovery Software such as Data Rescue 4, Stellar Phoenix or R-Studio? Alternately, could I use the same software to recover the now deleted files from the wiped and reformatted Toshiba HDD? I'm having trouble accepting that the 187GB of data on the external drive are really gone, as it represents over a decade of media collection and contains many irreplaceable files. I'm hoping there is something that can be done before spending a lot of money on clean room data recovery services. Please help!!!
Thank you in advance as any and all advice is very much appreciated.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
