Reluctant to upgrade

After reading about all the problems other users are having since upgrading to Mavericks, I am reluctant to upgrade.
Presumably Apple are going to fix all these various bugs and problems? Does anyone have any idea how long a fix from Apple is going to take to be released?
I am mainly concerned that if I remain using version OS X 10.8.5. I could be missing out on any security updates which are being released. Is this likely to happen to users who do not upgrade to Mavericks?
Any advice/info will be gratefully welcome. Thanks.

There are always many reports of problems with every OS upgrade. If you use that as a criterion, you'll never install any upgrade again. Most of the problems are caused by incompatible third-party software. The best way to avoid them is to take an inventory of such software, remove what you don't need, and make sure the rest is up to date.

Usually I get a message saying "Unable to download application" and "<app> could not be downloaded at this time - Done or Retry".
It's not an iTunes login / password issue because sometimes one or two of the Apps will download and the others stall with the blank progress bar. The internet connection is working fine in all other respects.
Sometimes, many restarts later the downloads will complete. Is this a known bug? Is Apple working on it? Any fixes?

  • Why did my mouse stop scrolling after upgrading to mavericks?

I have completely lost all ability to scroll with my Apple Magic Mouse after upgrading to Mavericks.   Why did this happen?   How can it be fixed?    It worked fine with Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.

    Everyone:
I was able to solve my own problem, after scouring the Internet looking for solutions.  Sadly, the Apple Support Community was of no help.
    Here's the full story:
I originally had purchased my iMac with Snow Leopard installed.   I loved it just the way it was, and really did not ever want to upgrade.  However, I've been around computers long enough to know that I would HAVE to do it someday, only because of the age old problem of wanting to run some new application in the future, but not being able to, becasue the app would only run on the latest version of OS X.  I reluctantly upgraded to Mountain Lion less than a year ago, without too many problems -- nothing I wasn't able to fix fairly easily anyway.  When Mavericks came out, with the "offer I could not refuse" price of FREE, I knew I would eventually have to install it.
So the day comes when I'm finally ready to install Mavericks.  To get ready for that day, I did the following:
I ran CCleaner on Mountain Lion to clear out any old files accumulated.  (No longer works in Mavericks)
Made sure my Time Machine backup was up to date
Cleared out gigbytes of old files off my hard drive, and archived them on an external USB drive
Made sure every single app on my iMac was fully upgraded.
Made sure Mountain Lion itself was fully upgraded!
I then set aside a full day for the upgrade, knowing full well how long it could take, even with a very fast internet connection.  Eventually I worked up the courage to go to the App Store, and proceded to download Mavericks.
The update seemed to go smoothly enough, no problems that I noticed.  So I finally get to the point where I can sign on to my iMac again, opened up the Chrome browser, and found out that my mouse was was unable to scroll.  I then opened up Firefox and Safari, and found that I could not scroll pages on those browsers either. As a matter of fact, I couldn't scroll using my mouse no matter what app I tried.  That feature was completely lost.
I went to ' System Preferences --> Mouse ' to look at the settings, and only the most basic settings were available: click and speed, nothing at all for scrolling or swiping.   That's not good....
Looking to see if anything else was missing in System Preferences, I saw that there was no option for Blue Tooth at all.  As a matter of fact, Blue Tooth was completely inoperative, and there was literally nothing I could do to make it work.  The Mavericks upgrade had completely trashed Blue Tooth on my iMac.  I have no idea how my wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse were even operational, Apple must have some sort of "back door" that keeps those two connected even when the entire Blue Tooth subsystem is off-line.
Since there was absolutely no way to fix this, given the damage done by the Mavericks upgrade, my only choice was to do a complete re-install of Mavericks.  I did this by turning off my iMac, and then after turning it back on, I held down the command + R keys to initiate the "recovery" of my iMac, and re-installed Mavericks. There are screens the are displayed that walk you through the process, which is fairly easy and strait-forward.
This above process is a feature called OS X Recovery, and it has been present since Lion.  Here's a link to an article that explains it more fully:
OS X: About OS X Recovery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
I did not know about this feature, but found out about it after doing various web searches in an effort to find a solution to my problem.
So, I basically ended up installing Mavericks a second time.  This took hours to accomplish, but it worked.   After the second installation, I signed on, and sure enough, Blue Tooth was back in operation, and my Magic Mouse worked without any problems what so ever.  I had full scrolling ability in all my apps.
So OS X Recovery saved the day, at least for me.
I should note that before doing the Mavericks upgrade on my iMac, I had already performed the upgrade on a family member's MacBook, without any problems encountered at all.   They were still running Snow Leopard, the orignal OS that came with their MacBook!  Like me they were reluctant to upgrade, but eventually it becomes a necessary evil.
Here's hoping that this information may be of use to someone in the future.

  • Upgrade from 10.2.8

10.2.8 runs fine, and I have been reluctant to upgrade to newer versions, as I think I might also need to upgrade Quark 6.1 and Photoshop 7.0, and I do not want to go to all that expense.
But is it possible to have another OS (like 10.3 or 10.4) on my internal hard drive, and harmlessly switch between them? I also have an external hard drive where I could install the new OS, if that would work better.
It is my hope that this would allow me to use my trusty old software when needed, but also purchase some addiional new software. Thanks!

is it possible to have another OS (like 10.3 or 10.4) on my internal hard drive, and harmlessly switch between them?
As Niel has indicated, it is possible. You will need to install on 2 separate volumes.
Depends on what you mean by "harmlessly switch between them." Your computer can only be booted from one OS at a time, so that to "switch" you need to shut down one OS and boot from the other.
Depending on the size of your internal HDD, it may not be wise to partition it, not to mention the disruption that will occasion. The better plan may be to install the OS which will be used less often on a partition of the external firewire HDD.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • TS2518 I have Aperture 3.1.2 running on os 10.6.8. Aperture does not show focus points on my Nikon D7100, nor does it recognize the RAW files. Will upgrading Aperture allow me to see the focus points and RAW files again? Also, do I need to upgrade my os f

I have aperture 3.1.2 running on os 10.6.8 mac book pro. Lost some features in aperature when I upgraded my camera (no longer shows focus points, does not recognize RAW files) Would like to upgrade to aperture 3.5, but do not want to loose any pictures in my extensive library. Do I have to upgrade one vesion at a time, or can I jump? I believe I also need to upgrade my os, but not sure which to do first?  Any help would be appreciated...

    1. Can I get Icloud without having to upgrade to OS Lion?
    Nope, you need 10.7.
    2. If I upgrade to OS Lion, does this automatically put me onto ICloud
No, you set that up yourself.
    3. I have three mobile me email addresses. One for myself, one for my wife and one I use for my business. What happens to these.
You can convert them to be used in iCloud.
    4. My wife and I also use mobile me to sync our calendars across an Ipad (original) and two Iphones (3Gs). Both Iphones and Ipad are still currently using IOS4, and I am reluctant to upgrade this to IOS 5 as I have heard some horror stories. If I fail to upgrade to IOS 5, will this create confusion with my Apple ID's. (There already is a lot of confusion with these- Apple appear to not have down their homework)
If you don't change the settings you have now, I'm sure it will stay working.  I believe Apple is phasing out MobileMe and you'd be forced to upgrade eventually.
    5. Will Icloud allow me to transfer my Icalendar across seamlessly? This is Ical 4.04 whic came with my Imac. Does this get upgraded if I update to Lion?
Yes, it will get upgraded.  I have my calendar on Lion and my iPhone 5.0.1 working seamlessly at the moment.  That doesn't mean you won't have problems because with new technology that can be expected.  Make sure you do a back up if you're worried about losing data.

  • Problems after Jelly Bean upgrade

I upgraded to Jelly Bean when it came available and immediately started noticing problems.  The phone became sluggish in general but most notably the keyboard lagged to the point where texting became problematic.  I was unable to use the gallery app - it would open but pictures either wouldn't load or I couldn't scroll through them.  The camera app also wouldn't scroll through my pictures.  The web browser was sluggish even on a strong wi-fi connection.  I did a factory reset twice and lost a ton of information in the process, in hopes the reset would clear things up.  I ended up going to the store and the rep said he would have a new phone overnighted - which by the way, they gave me a used, sorry, a "certified like-new replacement" phone, not a new one.
Now that I have my replacement I'm reluctant to upgrade this one to Jelly Bean if I'm going to continue having problems.  Are/were these just an isolated problem, perhaps something in the phone itself and not the software, or are these widespread issues that will hopefully be addressed?  I've read on forums all over that people are complaining of battery drain but I didn't have that issue, just the sluggishness and the inability to access my pics.

Jbthompson, I know it can be upsetting when an update that should improve your phone's functionality causes it to have problems. I haven't seen the issues you experienced on most Galaxy S III's. Like TheGuyUpNorth stated, most issues are resolved with a factory reset. Do you know if any of your applications were automatically re-installed after the reset? Sometimes the cause of slowness can be related to applications that were compatible with the old OS no longer being compatible with the new one, or conflicting with each other. If you reset and then the same applications are re-installed, then the problem may arise again. Have you completed the JB update on your Galaxy S III replacement yet? Even if you defer or reject the software update, it may come again at a later date. You want to make sure you are ready to complete the update because if it alerts you in the middle of the night and you don't respond, it may go thru. If the battery isn't charged fully that could cause a problem with the update completing. Please let us know if you have any problems with the replacement and we'll be happy to help.

  • Upgraded to 7 now playlists not showing on nano

    Help!
I recently upgraded to iTunes 7 (not 7.1.1) when I was forced to do so with a new ipod (somebody elses) installation. Previously I'd been using iTunes 6 without the slightest bother with my own, slightly older nano.
Now all the music I've since uploaded to itunes, and put into playlists are not appearing as playlists when moved on to my ipod. I can access the tracks from the artist or album menu so they are on my ipod but just showing as playlists. I also don't find 7 that good and the new window where you have to 'tick' from the list what you want to sync with it seems to not scroll right to the bottom of the list sometimes. It might be my imagination but I'm also fairly sure that I'm not getting as much on my ipod as I did before, telling me full when have exactly what was on it before for example.
I'm reluctant to upgrade to version 7.1.1 after the problems some people are having but I'm not happy with it like this either. I'm also due a upgrade to my ipod driver, what would be the best way to proceed? Go back to 6, if so how?
Try 7.1.1; or the ipod update first? Has anyone experienced similar problems?
    Thanks
    Clare
    iBook 800MHz, PowerBook Super G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Donna
I agree with the comments on the sync window and also the suspicion on the space availability seeming to be "slightly" less after the upgrade. To be honest I had paid no attention to the space until I filled up pre 7.1.1 and had to start selecting for syncing. I went ahead with the latest upgrade anyway and have found it stable, if a bit unwieldy with the sync window. I haven't found playlists missing, so can't offer any advice on a solution, but suspect the upgrade path might be the best option in the long run - at least the support from Apple will be on current software if you have to use them.

  • Don't make me upgrade!  ;-) some humor for b noir

You know my reluctance to upgrade from 4.9 (everything works...why chance it?). Well, I'm trying to debug a friend's brand new shuffle (green-light-stuck-on-and-doesn't-play-bug). Guess what? I need iTunes 5.0 or later to see the shuffle. Noooooo!
Answer: go fix it at her house on her PC.
You'll have to pry 4.9 from my cold dead fingers!

    hi Steve!
So, I deleted em, booted the computer in safe mode, intalled the latest QT first, and then installed itunes. seemed to work out. I'll use the phrase "quirky".
yeah, the QT component of the newer itunes installer bundles is more fragile on the install than the standalone QT. it gets caught by antivirus/antispyware interactions in particular, but other interactions cause pain as well.
while we're on the subject of antivirus and antispyware, have you ever tried an experimental launch of itunes while watching the process tab when you've disabled your antivirus and antispyware first, to see what your CPU usage is like then?
we've been getting some reports of strange launch and shutdown problems (sometimes associated with 100% CPU usage) that are (apparently) associated with security software interfering with itunes reading/writing the .itl and generating the .xml library files.
while i've got you here, i figure i can just keep throwing recent potentially-relevant observations at you as i think of them ... tell me to go away if it gets irritating.
    love, b

  • Has upgrade to iPhoto 6 solved anyone's SBOD hang problems?

I'm just curious if there is a bug fix included with this version. I'm going to upgrade regardless because I want the other features of iLife, but I've been hoping against hope that iPhoto 6 might actually deliver. I'd be tickled if it delivered the 25,000 images promises of v5. If I can't get iPhoto to work right with 6, I'm going third party. A year of frustration is TOO much.
PS - I did try to search before posting but I couldn't come up with a term that brought me any results on this question.

I answered this myself by upgrading. I don't have any spinning ball nightmares or problems quitting on the two computers with the upgrades. That may be due to the fact that with each the upgrade also included a completely fresh start with iPhoto. I am creating new libraries when I get to two or three thousand photos. I'm being diligent about culling unwanted photos through image capture and preview before I import them. I'm smarter about managing photos within iPhoto and not touching anything in the folders for iPhoto.
I have not upgraded on my third computer yet as it is the repository of all the photos I had before iPhoto 6. I have up to five copies of the same photo that are listed as originals. Most are rotations. It's crazy. They are still in a disastrous mess. I'm a bit reluctant to upgrade there. Maybe it will help me get the mess fixed.
The final line is that I love iPhoto again, thanks to version 6.

  • Coldfusion 7 MX, upgrading third party library files such as log4j.

How do I upgrade log4j that is installed with CF7MX? I have
an app that also contains log4j, but a newer version. It would seem
that the app I am using is getting a handle on the CF7MX log4j, and
    throwing an exception.
I've tried moving my app's log4j to the beginning of the CF
classpath, set in the Admin Console, and even overwriting the older
version with the new, and new with the older, in a fit of
    desperation. All attempts were unsuccessful.
I tried the demo version of CF8, and the app runs fine, but
my company is reluctant to upgrade to CF8 just for one app. The
cost of the new software is a factor, but so is regression testing
all of the other apps etc. So suffice it to say, I'm really hoping
to come up with a solution for CF7MX. I looked at the patch for
7.02, but it doesn't contain any java library upgrade.
Also, we don't have the source code for the app that we are
running under CF, so we aren't able to downgrade the logging calls.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Software upgrade 2.1 interrupted - HELP!

    Hello,
This is frustrating. I was reluctant to upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1 for a long time since it was working perfectly, but today I decided to take a risk and I lost. I updated BB Desktop Manager, plugged the Playbook into my laptop, backed PB up and started the SW upgrade. It went OK for a while to about 30% as I can see on a progress bar and then stopped. It shows "installing sys.pim.contacts" for more than two hours now. I called BB tech support and they advised me to wait much longer saying that it might take 8 hours and if I disconnect PB it will become unusable. I checked the CPU of my laptop and there is a zero activity on it, it is virtually idle. I am on high speed cable internet and there is no problem with connectivity. Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • If I upgrade to Lion and migrate MobileMe to iCloud, can I still sync my 2nd generation iPod Touch to my MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo) via USB cable?

I am very reluctantly considering upgrading to Lion and going ahead and migrating MobileMe to iCloud before June 2012. If I upgrade and migrate, will I still be able to sync my 2nd generation iPod Touch via USB cable? Or will these changes force me to get a new iPod that can run iOS 5 because syncing will be nightmarish?

Thanks for your reply. I would prefer to keep using this iPod for a while yet. Cheers!

  • Safe to upgrade to Mavericks with WD drive?

I know this is an old issue, but I have been reluctant to upgrade to Mavericks.
I ran the WD uninstaller to prepare for the Mavericks upgrade.  But I saw the WD Manager still installed in my menu bar.  I ran a separate WD manager uninstaller to get rid of it. But this left me wondering - how do I know the uninstaller did the job completely?
Is there a way I can check to be 100% certain that whatever was the offending WD software is completely removed from the external WD drive and/or my Mac before upgrading to Mavericks?
I called WD tech support, but the person I got did not give me confidence.
    Thank you.

You could run a program like EtreCheck. It will show everything that is loaded.

    I think I fixed it.
I was reluctant to upgrade to the 2.6.5 kernel after the 2.6.4 usb hotplug errors.
But I went ahead anyway and the hotplug errors aren't there and the TV (xawtv) works OK now.

    Thanks for the reply Xentac,
Since it started working again after the 2.6.5 upgrade I didn't check the command
    line thing anymore.
Since I seen another post about this I investigated again and the error about the font
    is still there:
