Remaining HDD space no longer showing in finder window

Hi All,
Am I being really dense or has the handy little HDD remaining space notifyer now gone from the bottom of finder windows? I used to rely on this a lot - is there any of way of getting it back?
Infact, how do you see you HDD useage at all?

Clicking on Finder icon in Dock no longer opens new Finder window

This behavior just started about a week ago. When I click on the Finder icon in the Dock, nothing happens, even though a new Finder window is supposed to appear. I have gone through the usual fix-its (deleting the Finder plist file, relaunching the Finder via Force Quit), but nothing has worked. Any suggestions as to the cause and possible remedies?

Here is what showed up in the Console:

Illustrator document thumbnail previews not showing in finder window

I am trying to find a way to view Illustrator document thumbnails (CS,CS2,CS3 and CS4) in Finder windows. Other documents such as .tiffs, jpgs, etc and Word and .pdfs show but not Illustrator.
I used +show view options+ in the Finder, turning on and off show icon, show icon preview and show preview in column. The options seem to affect all other files but not Illustrator. All I get is the application icon but not the document thumbnail. Interestingly, I discovered if I manually delete the .ai extension the documents thumbnail appears, so I tried to turn off the +Show all file extensions+ in the Finder's Preferences. It changed other files but not Illustrator. Does anyone know how to accomplish this on a global basis without manually changing each files extension? It would allow me to the use of Quick Look on these files also. I did speak to Adobe and they thought it was an OS issue.

Device no longer appears in finder window

When I connect a memory card from a camera to the computer using a card reader connected to a USB port, what used to happen is it would automatically launch iPhoto for possibly importing some or all of the pictures and would the card would also appear as a "device" in the left hand column of the Finder window. This latter would allow files to be copied off the card to some other location in the computer.
Unfortunately, when I was trying to copy a file off the card, I inadvertently dragged the listing out of the finder window and got a mini-explosion sound effect and puff of smoke same as when you remove an icon from the dock. And the card was no longer listed as a device.
I have tried rebooting the computer. I have done a spotlight search looking for the memory card. Nothing.
Now, when I attach the memory card using the card reader connected to a USB port, iPhoto still launches automatically and iPhoto still recognizes all the pictures on the card. However it no longer appears in the device list in the Finder window. If I go into system profiler, it too recognizes the card and lists it as a device connected to the particular usb port. But I can't find a way to open the card other than importing into iPhoto.
So, the question is, how do I get the device to once again appear in the device list in the Finder window the way it is supposed to?

Open the Finder's preferences and select the "Sidebar" tab. Try checking things in the "Devices" category. If there is a check in the category that you think would apply to that device, try unchecking it, close the preferences window, open it again, and check that item again.

All My Files no longer showing in Finder

Instead all that's there is a Search bar with 'This Mac' and 'All My Files' on it and blank below it. Before it always used to show, well, all my files! What can have happened? I don't recall playing around with it or anything. This isn't really a serious thing as all my files (which are, in the main, .doc files) are safe and sound on the hard drive and I always back them up on a USB stick, but I'm just wondering what's going on? Hmm, why would an empty Spotlight results window be showing when you click on All My Files? I can't see anything that lets you show all the files in All My Files! I just want it to go back to how it looked before with all the files in it. As I say I can't recall doing anything to it.
If it helps, in 'Get Info' on the sidebar the path (I think that's what it's called anyway) is
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/MyLibraries
and in 'Get Info' in the search body it's
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/MyLibraries/myDocumen ts.cannedSearch
I don't know what the path would be if it looked how it did before and displayed all the files.

My CD track titles no longer show up on Windows Media Player; just Track 1, Track 2, etc. Is there a setting to correct this?

No matter which CD I play on my computer (using Windows Media Player), the title shows "Unknown Album", and each track is listed a s Track 1, 2, etc. instead of showing the song title. When I click on "Find album info", a message pops up saying "You must change your privacy settings in Tools, Options, to update information about the audio media you have selected". I don't see anything in the Privacy tab that has to do with audio media. All of this began when I changed to Firefox. I'm using Version 3.6.12

The Tools|Options it is talking about are those listed in WMP not FF.

After charging my 5th gen ipod on vista computer, it is no longer showing on itunes/windows xp.

i have only been able to set the ipod to Disk Mode, itunes/windows XP then finds the ipod, it then tells me i need to restore which i do, it then starts to restore then tells me it needs to diconnect to finalise but will then appear in itunes. however this does not happen, the ipod just shows the apple logo, and does not reconnect to itunes/windows XP.
Can anyone please advise me of what i need to do.

How to make folders remain closed/collapsed in a list-view finder window?

Hi there,
I apologize if this was already answered, but after checking the posts, I just could find one dude who made the very same question but he got no answer; so that is why I'm posting this question back since is so much inconvenient having a lot of folders opened all the time.
Back in the OS9 system the tip was as simple: just option-click the arrow next to the folder icon, but it no longers works...
Any ideas?

I'm afraid that it won't work as expected. There they remain, expanded or collapsed as they were in some time you didn't noticed. I guess it has to be with permissions repair. I even tried to change permissions (instead of repair them) and apply them to the included folders (with the folders within collapsed) to see if that works, but there's no way.
The thing is that I dont wanna get messed with permissions repair (too busy in the studio), but on the other hand, it seems a pain to me to browse all that expanded folders every day...

Bootcamp assistant no longer showing up in windows 7

Bootcamp with windows 7 has worked fine for me for months and months and suddenly the small grey diamond that stayed in the taskbar has dissapeared and the only way I can bring it back is continously reinstalling the bootcamp drivers on the windows side...and that obviously is not a permanent fix as each restart I have to do it again.
Without this I am unable to adjust volume, screen brightness or keyboard brightness using the keyboard.
I have no idea why this started happening.

I ran a chkdsk as suggested above and when the computer started again everything was working. Since then I haven't booted back into 7 because I've been studying for finals and haven't had time to check, so once I do (tomorrow or late tonight) I will update the thread.

Right click on firefox at bottom bar no longer shows minimize all windows option

using 3.5.7 because the new version is a memory hog and had other unusual problems esp with flash - have not upgraded (FF, OS etc) anything but this option suddenly disappeared. using Win 7.

I have updated my iMac ot osx 10.9.1 but my screen no longer shows my finder bar unless I activate another program like mail or safari. also I can't access photos stored on my portable hard drive that was used before the update. Should I unsubscribe my update?

Spaces and Finder windows

I have set up two Spaces, one for web/internet apps, and one for music apps.
For each space I have a set of different Finder windows open.
However, when I log off and log on again, Spaces doesn't automatically open the second space, which means the two Finder windows belonging to "space 2" gets lumped into "space 1". I therefore have to manually drag the two Finder windows to "space 2" every time I log on.
Is there a way to automatically assign these windows to the space they belong? Or is this manual step required for each login?

it seems inconsistent that Finder windows (not application windows) can be assigned to a specific space one minute, while this setting is "forgotten" when I log on.
You cannot assign a window to a workspace, you can only assign an application to a workspace - and yes, the Finder is an application. Opening a window does not assign it to anything because - repeat after me - you cannot assign a window to a workspace.
And why are you mentioning programs in connection with Finder windows
A) because the Finder is an application so it behaves just as any other application does and B) because you still do not seem to understand that only an application can be assigned to a workspace, not a window

Maybe this will do what you want - but I doubt it. Open the System Preferences and select the Expose & Spaces control panel. Select the Spaces tab. There's a list of all the applications to which you have assigned a workspace and at the bottom left of that window pane is a plus icon. Click on it to see a list off all the running applications that haven't been assigned to a space yet. You'll see the Finder there in that list. Select it and then look for Finder in the list of applications in the Window pane. Now you can assign the Finder to a specific workspace or to all workspaces.
Play with this for a while and if you don't like Finder assigned to a single workspace or to all workspaces, you can return to the control panel and delete it.

File dates not updated in finder window (Mozilla only)

OK, folks - here's a real puzzler for you. I'm using Mozilla 1.7.12 to maintain a simple set of web pages. When I save an HTML file with Mozilla composer, the file's modify date in the Finder window does not update consistently. (The window is in list view.)
The date does not update as long as that finder window remains in the background. Selecting the window sometimes updates one file date (but not others if I've modified multiple files). Switching to icon view sometimes updates the file dates, sometimes not. Only logging out and back in (i.e., starting a new Finder) guarantees that all dates are current. This only happens with Mozilla composer - saving files with other software results in the date in the finder window updating immediately. It seems to me this behavior is new since I updated to OSX 10.4.3, but I can't be positive.
Any bright ideas? - Andy

Is this causing any problems, or is it just a quirky behavior? For example, if you change to list view and sort by date, does it still get the dates wrong?
I'm thinking this is probably a really marginal bug, where Composer isn't telling the Finder to refresh the date as most applications do, but then, Mozilla does a lot of unMaclike things. Eventually the Finder figures out that the files have been updated though. There are probably a host of ways you can force it to update, as you've already discovered. You can also force it to update with a simple AppleScript:
tell application "Finder"
update every item of window 1
end tell
This tells the Finder to update everything in the frontmost window to match what's on the disk.

Spaces randomizes the z-order of windows

I just got my shiny new iMac yesterday and was really happy to find Spaces and start using it- until I hit a bug
Switching Spaces randomizes the z-order of the windows in the Space. For example, if I have a browser window in front of a Finder window, switching out and back into the Space will pretty much always move the finder window in front of the browser.
Please tell me there's some fix for this- it's incredibly annoying.

Perhaps Finder application is assigned to Every space. Open System Preferences, Exposé & Spaces, Spaces. If Finder.app is in the column Application Assignments and Every Space is set then a finder window will appear in front of all other windows when you switch between spaces.
To prevent application windows reordering, select the app name in Application Assignment column then click minus button.
