Remap "menu" key in textmode

Hi all,
Recently I got a new laptop and installed arch on it, but one big nuisance it has is its keyboard: the damn thing doesn't have a "/?" key, one has to use AltGr+q and AltGr+w to get those, which is a big problem for linux users. (I have posted this under "Laptop Issues" because it seems to be a growing trend in the laptop world...)
So I decided to remap the menu key to have a decent slash key, and I know how to do it in Xmodmap, but I would really like a solution that would work in console mode as well.
So, looking at my /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/br-abnt2.map.gz, I added the folowing lines there
keycode 135 = slash question degree
control keycode 135 = Delete
alt keycode 135 = Meta_slash
I'm using keycode 135 because that is what xev told me the menu key is.
Also, in my rc.conf I have KEYMAP="qwerty/br-abnt2".
Then I reboot and log into console mode, but it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you!
EDIT: typo

This works for me:
# echo keycode 58 = slash question degree | /usr/bin/loadkeys -
It can be put to /etc/rc.local to make it permanent.

  • [SOLVED]Remap my menu key in Xorg

    Hi, everyone!
    I have a menu key of no use on my keyboard, and I want to use it. So I decide to remap it. I want to do this mapping:
    menu + 1 => F1
    menu + 2 => F2
    menu + 3 => F3
    menu + 4 => F4
    menu + 5 => F5
    menu + 6 => F6
    menu + 7 => F7
    menu + 8 => F8
    menu + 9 => F9
    menu + 0 => F10
    menu + - => F11
    menu + + => F12
    menu + w => ArrowUp
    menu + d => ArrowDown
    menu + a => ArrowLeft
    menu + d => ArrowRight
    menu + j => PageDown
    menu + k => PageUp
    menu + m => End
    menu + , => Home
    This means if I press menu key and 1 at once, it equals to F1. It seems that Xmodmap can't be suitable because it can't map combination keys. Do you have any idea of the way to do it?
    Thank you.

    Hi, I made some progress, the problem is partly solved.
    In ~/.Xmodmap:
    xmodmap -e "add mod3 = Menu"
    In ~/.config/sxhkd/sxhkdrc:
    # don't take action if I press Menu
    Menu
    true
    mod3 + 1
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F1
    mod3 + 2
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F2
    mod3 + 3
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F3
    mod3 + 4
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F4
    mod3 + 5
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F5
    mod3 + 6
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F6
    mod3 + 7
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F7
    mod3 + 8
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F8
    mod3 + 9
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F9
    mod3 + 0
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F10
    mod3 + minus
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F11
    mod3 + equal
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers F12
    mod3 + w
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Up
    mod3 + s
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Down
    mod3 + a
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Left
    mod3 + d
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Right
    mod3 + j
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Page_Down
    mod3 + k
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Page_Up
    mod3 + m
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers End
    mod3 + comma
    xdotool key --clearmodifiers Home
    And run sxhkd(it's in AUR), see it's working.
    Note some part also need fixing.
    Greatly thanks for WonderWoofy, Trilby and 2ManyDogs.
    EDIT: Now it is completely solved.

  • Remapping character keys (not shortcuts)

    Hey everyone,
    I´ve got a US keyboard on my Macbook that I would like to use with a german key layout. I actually already physically switched a few keys around and am looking at buying my umlauts (ÜÄÖ) on ebay. Now as I don´t want to replace almost all keys I was wondering:
    Is there a way to remap character keys under OSX Lion?
    I´m not talking about shortcuts as this can be done in system preferences, I mean actual character key remapping.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    V

    Is there some reason why just switching to the German layout provide with OS X does not work?  You do this by going to system prefs/language & text/input sources and checking the box for German, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar, and then choose German in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.
    If the layout provided by Apple is not exactly right, I can suggest another one you can install.
    If you really need to create a custom layout, then the tool is

    Three-finger reset again.
    Installed the .sisx file above (cwrt core).
    Installed the Nokia Store from Betalabs (with Qt 4.7.4).
    Read your post, so deleted those two files you mentioned from installated apps.
    Installed earlier version of Nokia Store from your link.
    Ran this, which prompted me to upgrade.
    Can now log in without the black screen.
    It seems remarkable that doing a factory reset means the phone doesn't work.
    That's the question;Nokia advise to never do a 3 finger hard reset.this process delete some files that isn't recoverable even reinstall software.
    I have a C7 as well and already perform a 3 finger hard reset,but a software reinstall put it back as 2out of the box".don't know why this do not works in Nokia 701
    At least you have the store back again right?
    As far as i know it should be missing in your phone,the photo and video editor right?
    That's why i took mine to Nokia Care Center,they put the phone as out of  the box.

  • E71: how to remap keyboard keys

    Hi!
    I was wondering whether there is a way to remap the keys on the qwerty keyboard on E71. I basically want a different layout. Is there any system utility I could use, buy, etc.?
    The reason I want this is because a standard native Russian keyboard ("jetsukeng" as it is called) is something I am not used to. I prefer a phonetic keyboard sometimes called "yawerty", so I'd like to use it on E71.
    Thanks in advance,

    Maybe something like Magic Key? http://bit.ly/grQHq
    My experience with Magic Key has been pretty good, on my E71, although I'm not remapping a whole lot of keys. I remap a few keys, so they function differently, depending on which application is active.

  • What to do if the menu key is not working?

    a month after i got the phone my menu key is not working properly. sometimes it works and sometimes it dont. i already tried restoring my phone and all the the possible troubleshooting but still the same. what do i have to do?. my phone still under warranty and the company i purchased the phone said they are sending an email from apple yet ive been waiting for a month already and still there is no reply

    Go to settings>icloud>storage and back up>back up
    after that preform a restore by going to
    general>reset>erase all content and settings
    this will delete everything except the enabled stuff on icloud.
    You can view whats enabled by going to icloud in settings.

    Yes, it does. I have an update though. I left the phone switched off all night and when I restarted it this morning the button is working again! Very confusing as I restarted it countless times yesterday after the problem first emerged.
    However, I now have another problem with the unit though where the battery is only lasting about 4 hours. There is an incredible amount of heat on the back of the phone.
    I will post it as a new thread....
    Ilove nokias but they do have a habit of behaving like this. Frustrating.

  • Problems with the BBkey (also known as the menu key)

    Sometimes when I am in an app and want to click on one of the items in the menu list (e.g., delete), when I click on the menu key, what pops up are some of the icons from the home page.  (I am getting really tired of looking at that little penguin....).  If i persist, I can usually get the menu option to pop up, but it's annoying.  I am pretty sure it is a software problem.  I had this problem after some time on my first Tour.  I had to replace that because of other issues.  I used the Device Switch Wizard to transfer everything, so I guess it also transferred whatever is causing this issue.
    Is anyone else having this problem?  Any ideas about what to do?  I don't want to re-install the OS-- I'd rather put up with the problem.  Thanks.
    Liz
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi again!
    The BBKey/Menu key has two functions...
    1) To bring up a context-sensitive menu for the app you are in
    2) To bring up the app-switcher ribbon (a list of all of your currently running apps so that you can quickly change to a different app)
    The difference is how long you hold the key down. For 1, it's a quick press and release. For 2, it's a hold down. Sometimes, it gets it wrong, but with practice you will be able to get what you want most of the time (not 100% though...I still get the wrong result sometimes).
    Hope that helps!

  • E71 menu key freezes

    I purchased the e71 two months back and had everything working perfectly until of lately the menu key and the home key freeze. When pressed all it does is blink and the only way to get the keys working again is to reboot it. this is very irritating as otherwise it is a great phone and extremely good to use.
    If it is a software problem; I would sincerely request nokia to come out with an update for the e71, as while trying to hunt for a solution to the above on the internet, I have found quite a few e71 users complaining of the same problem.

    Today I phoned Nokia (call reference 1-2379216082) and was told they know about this problem & are working on a solution.
    My phone has been to my service provider 3 times and my emails to Nokia have not been directly responded to.
    Nokia are still selling the E71 and do not have a solution to this problem!

    It's what Nokia will do about it now and how do we alert them?
    Well this is an official Nokia forum and there are representatives that look over the forum so I'm sure it'll be picked up as an issue and worked upon.
    Can someone do a check for me please as my multimedia key started working for me again, and I don't recall restarting it (or it rebooting) between the alarm going off and the multimedia key starting to work (unfortunately I haven't been able to find an "uptime" tool for the Symbian 60 environment).
    Could you close all open applications on your phone, then goto Tools->Memory card and backup the contents of your phone onto your memory card, and THEN try the multimedia key to see whether it starts working again ?
    If it does, then I think I know what is happening. I've noticed that if I have MobiPocket open and do a backup of my phone contents onto memory card, what the phone does is actually close MobiPocket down so that it hasn't got any files open, then back everything up, then re-opens it for me. If this is the case, and the multimedia key starts working again for other users after carrying this action out, then it may be that the backup operation is closing a process which has been left running in the background of the phone once a recurring alarm has gone off.
    Regards,
    Edward

  • Remaping some keys with loadkeys and xmodmap

    Me again.
    I have a EEEPC 1005HA and I really don't like to press the Fn key to reach the HOME and END keys and the extreme position of DELETE. I also don't like SHIFT+7 for such a common symbol as "/". For all these reasons, I devised this scheme for the virtual consoles:
    loadkeys -q /usr/local/share/kdb/keymaps/personal.map
    in my /etc/rc.local script, with
    keycode 97 = Remove
    keycode 119 = Find
    keycode 99 = Select
    keycode 127 = F70
    string F70 = "/"
    inside personal.map.
    All this made this replacements:
    Pause --> HOME
    PrintScreen --> END
    Right Ctrl --> DELETE
    MENU --> "/"
    All this works fine... but I get strange results when I use xmodmap for doing the same inside Xorg. This is my ".Xmodmap" file:
    keycode 127 = Find
    keycode 107 = Remove
    keycode 105 = Select
    Strange results:
    1) HOME (ex-Pause) and END (ex-PrintScren) work fine inside urxvt, but they do not work in firefox nor geany.
    2) DELETE (ex-right control) works in all of them but with no key repetition (I have to release the key in order to use it again).
    3) (Not strange) I don't know how to make the replacement for the menu key
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.

    Open a console, launch xev, set focus to the newly created window, press the menu key and finally inspect the console for the keycode.
    And here is how what you should be looking for looks like:
