Remapping keyboard keys on the Vista side...

No problems with my Vista x32 install on BootCamp (via Leopard). But as an old PC person who's switched to Apple hardware (will get to Leopard down the road), I'd like to remap a few of the keys. Specifically, would be nice to swap the two Apple & ENTER keys to the right of the spacebar back to ALT & CTRL that we're used to on the PC side. Anyone found a good utility that lets you map specific keys?
I know this won't be an "Apple" question but thinking someone here might be in the same boat as me. I've seen some that replace the BootCamp keyboard drivers (like the one that adds fan controls), but that's not what I'm looking for. I just want to remap one or two keys, not replace the entire existing map.
TIA

To reule out  software problem try:
- A reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore the iPod from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If you still have the problem thismn it would appear to be due to a hadware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I need to reprogram the delete and enter key to the left side of a external keyboard for the ipad mini. I don't need the caps/lock or ctrl key. Due to a brain injury my daughter can only use her left hand to type. She also uses a text to speech app to verbalize all of her needs since her speech isn't intelligible any longer either. And her vision was significantly affected also, so the keyboard has to be mounted about 6 inches from her face. So to reach across the keyboard with her left hand to the right side delete and enter button is physically difficult and causes typing errors, which cause people to not understand what shes trying to say.
The best keyboard so far is the Zagg folio mini. I just had to make stickers to enlarge the letters on the key buttons.
Does anyone know how I can reprogram these two keys? Or where I can buy a wireless mini keyboard for Ipad made for lefthanders with these two functions on the left side. I have searched for days and days. It's sooooo important to me that she be able to contribute her voice again. Imagine if you got in a car accident and couldn't speak clearly any longer, but understood everything still. Thanks for any help and suggestions you all take the time to share with me. I really appreciate the kindness of strangers to help me help my daughter.

  • Remapping keyboard keys (again)

    Hi Svet,
I got my bios unlocked, a few keyboard keys remapped (ALT and CTRL swapped and a couple of others) and fan curves updated of my GS70 2OD-002US a while ago. I would like to get the left CTRL and left ALT back in the old positions. But I noticed that since MSI forum is revamped all my PMs are gone. Since the last mod I reinstalled Windows 8.1 in Legacy BIOS mode (disabled UEFI and erased all MSI partitions) and installed Linux Mint 17.1 along side of it (with RAID0). Please let me know if it is safe to flash a keyboard remapping now. My old post is here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=180399.0

  • E71: how to remap keyboard keys

    Hi!
I was wondering whether there is a way to remap the keys on the qwerty keyboard on E71. I basically want a different layout. Is there any system utility I could use, buy, etc.?
The reason I want this is because a standard native Russian keyboard ("jetsukeng" as it is called) is something I am not used to. I prefer a phonetic keyboard sometimes called "yawerty", so I'd like to use it on E71.
    Thanks in advance,

Maybe something like Magic Key? http://bit.ly/grQHq
My experience with Magic Key has been pretty good, on my E71, although I'm not remapping a whole lot of keys. I remap a few keys, so they function differently, depending on which application is active.

  • Remapping keyboard keys

I have Macbook Pro with US keyboard layout, which is just fine, similar to almost any of the keyboards I have used over the years. Recently I bought a localized (Bulgaria) Apple keyboard, where the positions of "`~" and "§±" are swapped. That's a pain, as I frequently use ` and ~ (Calling Visor (Quake style terminal) and ч/Ч in Bulgarian layout).
Using Ukelele I was able to change the US and Bulgarian - Phonetic layouts, so that the keys positions are swapped, but then there is the problem that this changes the layout on the Macbook keyboard...
Keeping two pairs of layouts - one for the Macbook and one for the keyboard would be a pain. Is there a way to make the "§±" key on the Apple keyboard behave like "`~", while keeping their normal function on the Macbook?

Is there a way to make the "§±" key on the Apple keyboard behave like "`~", while keeping their normal function on the Macbook?
No, whatever custom keyboard layout you have active applies to all keyboards, and there is no way to have it only become active when you are using one of them.

  • Keys on the left side repeat the up arrow key

I have an apple wireless keyboard (A1314) that came with a mid 2010 imac.  The keyboard pairs with the imac OK and most of the keys work fine but the up/down arrow keys don't work and some of the keys on the far left repeat the up arrow.  The repeating up arrow continues until I hit the return key.  A usb keyboard works fine on the imac and the wireless keyboard exibits the same problem on my iPad.

  • Remapping keyboard keys using udev hwdb doesn't work on rightAlt

    Hi,
I'm trying to use udev hwdb for swapping pairs of keys ( esc, caps_lock ) and ( rightAlt , rightCtrl ) . I followed the instruction here Map Scancodes to Keycodes   with procedures describe blow. I only succeed in exchaging pair (esc, caps_lock) but failed in (rightAlt, rightCtrl).
    Details of Procedures:
Create an empty file under /usr/lib64/udev/hwdb.d with file name 90-custom-keys.hwdb . Add the following lines into this file.
    keyboard:dmi:bvn*:bvr*:bd*:svnDell*:pn*
    KEYBOARD_KEY_01=capslock
    KEYBOARD_KEY_3a=esc
    KEYBOARD_KEY_e038=rightctrl

Thie last 6 lines seems to be complaining the  problem, saying that 0xe038  and 0xe01d are invalid scancodes.
But they are scancodes of rightAlt and rightCtrl respectively, which I got from

After rebooting the system with the above settings, esc works as caps_lock and caps_lock works as  esc but  rightAlt and rightCtrl has no changes.

For USB keyboard, you need to get the scancodes from evtest rather than showkey. You may find a solution from:

  • Remap a key on keyboard?

I'm doing a bunch of data entry and would like to have a tab key on the right side of my keyboard. For example, I'd like to re-map the "F19" to to be a tab key.
    Is this possible?

I'll let you sort these out if there's an answer in them.

Tap and hold on the Keyboard key at the bottom right side of the right portion of the keyboard.  You can use the Dock and Merge option from the menu.
Alternatively you can drag the keyboard down and move slightly left, to get it to merge.

Hey, two years ago i bought a Lenovo 3000 N200 with Windows Vista. It is running fine, but since 2 weeks on every start the backround is black and a message apears "Die Echtheit dieser Windows-Kopie noch nicht bestätigt" (This windows copy is not verified)I tried to register the system again with the Product Key on the bottom side lable, but the answer is always "Der eingegebene Product Key (ist) anscheinend kein gültiger Windows Vista Product Key" (The used product key is not a valid Windows Vista product key, please try again"

installing windows by pressing one key recover button should solve your issue.

  • Keyboard suddenly squeaking on one side

I have had my MacBook Pro for 3 months now and until two hours ago, had absolutely no problem with at all.
However, now...any time I type a key on the right side of the keyboard, it squeaks like crazy. It's driving me up the wall.
Is this something they will fix under the one year Applecare warranty ?
Is this a common problem ?

Squeaky keyboards are not the norm and depending on
the sweverity of the problem you should be able to
    get it fixed free.
    Kind regards
If it were just one key, it wouldn't bother me as much but it is an entire one half of the keyboard that squeaks. It doesn't help that I normally use this computer about 6-7 hours a day for typing so it is like hearing fingernails on a chalkboard for the entire work day !!
Fortunately, I do live in Canada so we don't send away our computers - we take them into local Mac Service providers.
Keeping my fingers crossed that they will just replace the keyboard as it isn't even normal wear and tear.

  • Removing/Cleaning keyboard keys

I accidentally spilled some soda on some of the keys on the left side of the iBook keyboard. I wiped it up right away and it wasn't very much soda, but some of the keys stick because a bit of the soda has dried underneath the keys. I've tried cleaning them as much as I can but I was wondering if it's possible/easy to take the keys off and then put them back on. Anyone know?

It's definately possible but it might not be easy. I haven't had to dismantle my iBook laptop's keyboard yet, but here's some advice from someone who has:

It looks like a pretty helpful page.

  • Events to detect change in physical keyboard key state

I would like my application to respond in one way to a keyboard key being pressed, and then another way to the key being released. That is, I want my application to be able to reflect the actual physical state of the keyboard key.
The obvious use of the (several) Java API's for keyboard events rapidly fires repeated KEY_PRESSED and KEY_RELEASED events if the key is held down for any time. This unfortunately obscures the actual state of the physical key (how do you know which was the last KEY_RELEASED?)
Is it possible to turn off the key repeat feature, just for component, say?
This would seem to be an obvious thing to do, but I can't find sample code anywhere. The code I find in the Sun Java API manuals all shows the above problem with key repetition.
I would be also pleased to know that the solution of this problem is well known, on some FAQ or something, but I have looked through several FAQ's and searched this formum and have found nothing that helps. Also, I have had the misfortune of having to build messy and non-robust solutions for the equivalent problem in other development environments. I hope it is already there somewhere in Java and I'm just missing it.
    Thanks!

"If two subsequent KEY_RELEASED and KEY_PRESSED
    events have the same
timestamp, they are caused by autorepeat"
This sounds good. But unfortunately the repeated
KEY_RELEASED and KEY_PRESSED caused by key autorepeat
on my system (Linux, java 1.5.0_09) have
timestamps that increase with each repetition.I think this means only that the pair of pressed/release events have the
same timestamp, not that every such pair has the same timestamp.
That is, if you have the sequence PRESS,RELEASE,PRESS,RELEASE,
the first two would have the same timestamp, and then the second two
would have the same timestamp, but different than the first. Regardless,
I found that also to not be the case; the PRESS and RELEASE did not have
the same timestamp even between pairs.
That said, this seems to work on both Windows and Linux, with the caveat
    that releases may lag.

  • Changing the vista drive icon...

Alright, I've made custom icons for my OS X drive, and my VISTA drive on my desktop...
However, I know it wont let me change it through the get info method... so I've tried
    http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Personalizeyourbootloader
but the instructions there aren't working either...
it shows that i have ._USB (my thumb stick)
and ._Untitled and VISTA (with no ._)
so i've tried doing the cp ._USB with ._Untitled ._VISTA and VISTA, and none worked. what am I doing wrong?

I am a little confused by all of the above detail, but I assume you are wanting to label the Vista partition so that it shows up with something other than untitled in OS X. To do this requires that the change be made on the Vista side of things.
Boot into Vista and right click on the drive. Rename at the top of that first screen. You will get a message about administrator authentication. Just click OK. The change should reflect instantly on the Vista side, and after a few seconds the next time you boot into OS X.
Any changes that require writing to the Vista partition must happen within Vista. Vista is an NTFS partition, and OS X can only read the partition.
