Remember back in the day...?

Remember when you had to allocate RAM for your software, back in OS9? You went into the get info panel and told it how much ram it should use? Do you have to do anything like that anymore? I ask because I recently had a HD fail and the new HD came with OS10.4.8. My apps are not quite as zippy as they were before. The new system is only a week old... Thanks--d

Just a little curious about your system and the old and new discs. How much RAM does your computer have? What kind of drive did you have before, and what did you replace it with?
Is there any difference in RPM, cache size, ATA/66/100/133 etc. that might account for the difference in speed of the new drive?
When an application needs more RAM than available in the computer, OS X will use virtual memory automatically as needed with space allocated on the hard drive. If you lack sufficient physical RAM, the hard disc may be more active than usual, and that might contribute to shorten the life span of the drive, if this becomes excessive.
I wonder if the new disc OS installation has all the correct drivers for your particular computer's hardware? How did you get the new disc with the OS already preinstalled?

I'm trying to find my phone back up from a few days ago before I bought my new iPhone, but when I searched on iTunes backup it has been replaced by the back up the day after that. Now all my data from my old phone is lost including some really important things. Also before that iTunes wouldn't let me sync my iPhone 5s data to my new iPhone 6 Plus, saying that the data is corrupt, that's where all this trouble started. I've been trying to back-up the old phones data so I can access it, but it's been replaced when ever I plug the new phone in, and no the 'sync automatically when connected' is not ticked. Please help me find my back ups.

Your iCoud account remains in iCloud even if your device is restored.  (In fact, you can't delete an iCloud account from iCloud, you can only choose to stop using it.)  If the device is restored, or it may no longer be signed into your iCloud account but your account will still exist in iCloud.

  • Can I allocate RAM as disk space- like the old 'RAM disk' back in the day

I've got 11 gigs of RAM, and Photoshop wants <4. Is there a way I can allocate some of the leftover RAM through the OS-- similar to the old 'RAM disk' back in the day? If I could, I could make it the primary scratch disk for Pshop and hopefully see a significant in-app speed increase.
I'm posting this as an OS question, not a Pshop question.
    Thanks

You would need to search at VersionTracker or MacUpdate to see if there is a compatible utility for a ram disk. There were several such animals around but nothing more recent than 2008. They may still work, but no assurances that they do. Use with caution. Be sure to check that they are Intel compatible at the very least.

Go to system preferences, mission control, and unselect "Show Dashboard as a Space".  While you're there, you may want to make dashboard set to a hot corner "Hot Corners" button at the bottom.

  • HT2471 How do I recover my Mac Book Pro back to the day I purchased it? Will I lose the apps that came with this Mac Book when I recover it?

How do I recover my Mac Book Pro back to the day I purchased it? Will I lose apps that came with the Mac Book if I recover it?

Press the command and r keys when turning on your Macbook.  Do not release those keys until you see the apple logo...
Disk Utility will pop up.....Your choices are to reinstall, you will not lose anything....
if however, you decide to format/erase your drive, then reinstall, you will lose everything...
suggestion - back everything up and do a clean install.
    good luck

  • Lost data. OS reverted back to the day I bought my mac

I turned on my mac and found that it had reverted to the day I had bought it. Completely blank of the last 4 years of photos and music. All updates had been lost but all software that I had aquired was saved. I have noticed that my free gigs are exactly the same which implies that the information is still somewhere.

Before we got this new version of this forum, when i clicked on "My Posts", below the posts i'd have a line indicating how many responses i had to my posts. I liked this feature alot, is there anyway to get it back?... If not, can you someone do something to put it back on?

You may be 'starting again' in terms of post count showing, but you still have the same number of total posts, and the hosts are working on a way to restore that information. Not only that, but if you were a Level 3 member before, you are still a Level 3 member. The display of 'status' is currently switched off, but will be switched back on again as soon as the Discussion system is fully stable.
I don't argue with the rationale that post count or level indicator was a valid measure of status that was of assistance to those reading contributions and trying to decide which was perhaps more likely to be good advice to follow, but I disagree with the characterization of the old system as 'working much better'. From my experience it was frequently unavailable for posting, regularly suffered reliability issues, and, as I understand it, took immense work on the part of the system administrators to keep it running even at that level of reliability. This new system may not be altogether stable either at present, but at least it has the potential to be, while the old system had potential only to worsen.

Nice place, and I was glad to grab some pics before they were absorbed!   (Excuse the lack of a tan!)

  • Sony PDA -back-in-the-day

Hello I have a Sony PEG-NX70U/V running on 4.1.0 and I use windows XP Media edition.  I use the Palm sync to update the Palm desktop for the calendar and my very extensive contacts / address book (including much use of the notes fields in many of my contacts).  I plan to get a smart phone soon (Android based if possible) and would like to know if I will be able to successfully sync all of my contacts to a new phone, which phone is the best to get and what apps and or bridge software will I need to completed the chore.  Last phone I synced was to a Motorola A1200 that runs on Linux (I think).  To get the A1200 to recognize my address book I deleted the Palm desktop and synced the Clie to Outlook on my PC.  Many of the fields in both the Clie and in Outlook got distorted, but over time I ditched Outlook, reinstalled the Palm desktop and cleared up all the errors.   Thankx for your time out there, cuz I an’t all that tecky.        Your alias, which will be your identity in this community. • HT5794 How do I get .lso-files, made back in the day, to open in Logic Pro

My old Logic Express 8 won't open them, I need Logic Pro 7.2.1 it tells me, . It's like that program never caught on in my network, nobody has it. All help greatly appreciated,  a DMG-file , on DVD.....or maybe even you converting them for me on your trusty old machine after I've sent them to you ..... Anyone?
    Please contact : [email protected]

Logic X will open them, but it won't be compatible with Logic 8.
Try looking for a copy of Logic 7 trial. You may have to go to dodgy places find it, but being a trial version I don't believe it's illegal to download from non Apple sources.
There was a Logic Express 7 trial version at one point I believe.

  • Back in the Game

    Hi everyone,
it's been 5 years since i've used flash so i'm working off the rust in my memory as to how to use this program.
i'm using Macromedia Flash MX (yea i know it's old) to do a video project with commentary. which is suppose to consist of 8 scenes (Intro, Highlights, Main Event, Replays, Main Event Continues, Replays..etc).
Scene 1 and 2 plays perfectly! i was so excited that i still had my skills after all this time... but scene 3 seems to be a problem child :/
So far all scene 3 consist of is word animation (all done in flash) and the Main Event which is 3 minutes and 34 seconds long original size is 720x480 rescaled to fit into a box on the scene (540x360), it's in avi format 756MB big and when importing i had to import the audio seperately and i also had to keep the quality of the video at 100% because the audio just wont sync right at anything less of 100% quality. i should also say that the flash project size is 854x480.
    The Main Problem:
when i try clicking on "test movie" to see how well it flows i get an error "There is not enough memory" but i could view scene 1 and 2 when i click on "test scene" of course when i try clicking on "test scene" on scene 3 i get the same error.
So i decided to seperate the scenes into indiviual *.fla files and deleted all the files out of the libary related to other scenes but i notice that the size of the *.fla file remain pretty much the same after performing this task and scene 3 still have the error.
    Spec on Pc Being Used:
    OS: Windows 7 32-bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentinum(R) D CPU 2.66GHZ 2.67GHZ
    RAM: 2GB
    OS: Windows 7 64-bit
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentinum(R) D CPU 3.00GHZ 3.00GHZ
    RAM: 4GB
ah after typing all of this i just remember that i was able to play scene 3 in the beginning when i try to use 50% quality but the audio won't snyc correctly so i can only assume that flash can't handle the size of the avi file and it needs to be compress to a poorer quality before before working but i have audio problems because of it.... man i'm so tired can any give me a solution that helps me out without having to reduce the video to a poor quality and at the same time keeping the audio snyc.
thanks for your help in advanc,
    Rennikz.

Using the AVI file format is from the same era as you left Flash .
What version of Flash are you using now? Please don't say MX... Back in the day of MX a 700MB video would be enormous. Even today in CS6 Flash is known to crash on large imports of that size. Out of memory seems just right.
Your first job would be to get the video into a format that's pre-compressed and library compatible, FLV (if you're using an old version of flash). That can be imported or played externally.
But first things first, what version of flash and what version of ActionScript (2.0 or 3.0)? If it's an old version and/or AS2.0 and you can provide me the 7xxMB AVI file I can compress it down using professional tools to a decently sized FLV ready for playback or import. It's not going to look as clean as MP4 H264 but I'll use On2VP6 Pro and hope your version of flash supports it. Otherwise I do have Sorenson Spark Pro which I know it will support, although the quality will take a big dive.

  • Nikon Df/Back to the future?

    Hey,
Having spent an entire summer weeding strawberry plants to purchase my first SLR (a Pentax ME Super), the new Nikon Df sure does take me back to the days of film. I remember how many years I drooled over the Nikon F3, and after all those years have passed I finally have an opportunity to have that F3 in a digital package; to bad I switched to Canon equipment. Maybe Canon will come out with the new F-1?
Any thoughts on this new Nikon DSLR?

  • Errors when in Month view and how do I show (highlight) the day selected?

There are some annoying 'bugs' in my ical. When I are working in month view and I select a day in that month to copy or enter an item to there is no indication that ical has that day selected. When I paste some data to that day thinking I have it selected it, it may be in the correct day or in the previously selected day - surely this is an oversight on Apples part or am I missing something here?
Also sometimes after pasting data to the correct day iCal will 'update' and then send the data back to the day I copied it from!!
    Any help appreciated.
MAC OS 10.9  on a Mac Mini.

    Hi,
You don't need to convert to a string and back again to do that.  Use TRUNC to get the right day, and date arithmetic to get the right time, like this:
    UPDATE  fc_gq_source_analysis
    SET     effective_date = TRUNC (sample_date, 'MONTH')
                                 + (sample_date - TRUNC (sample_date))
    WHERE   sample_type  = 'C'
TRUNC (sample_date, 'MONTH')        is midnight on the 1st of the month that you want.
sample_date - TRUNC (sample_date)   is the time that you want, expressed as a number of days (e.g., 9/24 of a day).
