Remembering directories when importing photos

When I do "Import Photos", "Copy Photos to a new location and Import", and I click on the "Choose" buttons, I would like the browser that opens to remember the last directory I used, and start browsing from there. Currently it starts from the Desktop (under MS Windows) and it is annoying to always have to navigate the directory structure from the top.

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
Anyway, hope this helps.

  • When importing photos with iBooks Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the imported photo?

When importing photos with the iBooks Author Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the corresponding imported photo? I have 4,800 stills to import and can't imagine it's necessary to copy and paste the description for each.

As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

Since i upgraded to Yosemite, when importing photos to iPhoto, they no longer appear in the 'events' summary in library. Why is this and how can i amend?

The events may be incorrectly sorted. Try to sort the events by date, while in "Events" view.
Go to the "View" menu: Sort Photos > By Date > Descending. That should bring the most recent events to the top of the list.

  • Excluding subfolders when importing photos in Photoshop Elements 10

In past versions of Photoshop Elements you could exclude subfolders when importing photos from files and folders.  In version 10 the "get photos from subfolders" is greyed out.  I normally do not want to include subfolders when importing.  I only want the top current folder.  Why the change?

    Hi,
    Just a further thought.
I have now tried versions 9 and 10 on a Windows 7 system and they both work the same. The "include subfolder" box is not active until I select a folder from the right side - selecting one on the left side doesn't activate it.
Which operating system are you using?
Did you change operating systems when you changed to PSE 10?

  • When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture....

When importing photos from iphoto to Aperture 3 it shows two versions of each image. One is original and one is iphoto edited.  It shows this for every picture even if it was never edited in iphoto.  Has anyone ever experienced this?  Is so, what image should I use to edit in iphoto?

This is asked and covered a lot here, a search of the list will bring up numerous other threads covering this. Also the More Like This box on the right side of the page will show you other posts on this topic.
This post, Duplicates when importing from iPhoto is the most recent example.
Briefly iPhoto took even the most trivial change to an image as an edit and created a new image. The most common reason for this is rotated images.
As for which image of the two you want to keep, that's entirely up to you. If there is really no difference between the two then you can keep either it makes no difference.
The thread I linked to above will explain how to use Aperture's filters to gather up all of one or the other.

  • When importing photos from my iPhone black boxes appear in place of random photos in the library and in Photostream.

When importing photos from my iPhone black boxes appear in place of random photos in the iPhoto library and in Photostream. It has no apparent pattern, the photos are just blank. It's not just icons, when I go to edit the photos externally in Photoshop it opens an image filled with nothing but black.
This is more than annoying. It's effectively deleting photos I'm taking on vacation and so forth.
    Anyone?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master import as opposed to just one?

When importing photo's into Apperture via iPhoto Browser I get 2 Versions of the master as opposed to just one?
    Why is this?
    Are there two master photo's?

When you import to Aperture using this method you get all the versions that iPhoto has - Mster and Edited  version. If you haven't edited the photo then tow possibilities:
A: the photo is Raw and you'e gettting the automatic preview that iPhoto creates on import as well
B: The shot has an auto-rotate tag from the camera

  • Unresponsive when importing photos

Okay. So I have an SD card that has some movies and pictures on it (taken via my Canon).
Whenever I try to import the items, iPhoto freezes up. It simply stays at the "preparing to import" screen and that's it.
iPhoto does recognize the camera/card reader (I have tried both), and makes thumbnails for the images/video when they are still in the camera.
    How do I fix this?

iPhoto is known to chock on large movies when importing directly from the camera. I don't remember the exact size that causes it but you can try this workaround: use Image Capture to upload the files to a folder on the desktop and then import from there into iPhoto. That should get your files imported.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Aperture 3.2.3 No File Directories when Importing

This has not been a problem before, but when I am importing photos into Aperture now, I do not have a file directory bottom half of the import window.  That is to say that when you usually "Command-I", the top half of the screen are thumbnails and the bottom of the screen are file directories so you can browse to the folder that you want to import the files from.  The only thing that is available to me now is the top window with a few images from my documents folder.  There is no bottom screen so I can't browse to where the images are.  There is no minimized screen (no equals sign on the bottom of the browser window), the file directory is just missing.  It is not the case that Aperture cannot see the other file directories.  I have been able to Import Folders as Projects as well as Reconnect files to the external drives.  There is just not a file directory on the bottom when I "Command-I".  Anyone else having this problem?  Is there a keyboard shortcut that I hit?

If you're certain you can't drag up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the file directory pane then moving the Aperture preference file out is the first thing to try in cases of messed up UI.
The preference file is in your home Library folder in the Preferences sub-folder. It is com.apple.Aperture.plist. When you move it out to ensure that Aperture is truly re-initializing you should reboot the machine then try Aperture again.
Post back if that doesn't fix it.

  • One Event created when importing photos from many dates

This is my first time using iPhoto, and I imported a few hundred images from my camera dating back about 7 months. I viewed the tutorial, and my understanding was that different events would be created based on the date of the files. Instead, it created one huge event of the date I imported them. Is that the way it operates? One this I was able to do with the app I used on Windoze was to have the images go into directories named by the date, so images were separated by day. Is there a way to specify that in iPhoto, or do I manually have to create events by splitting them once they are all in my Event that is dated the day I actually imported them?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How photos are separated when imported is set in iPhoto's Events preference pane:
When importing from the Finder, i.e. a folder on the hard drive, all of the photos will be in a single Event unless that checkbox that's pointed to in the screenshot is checked.
FWIW my workflow is to upload after every shoot to a folder, name the folder to identify the occasion of the photos and import the folder into iPhoto. This gives me an Event with the same name as the folder. I also rename the photos with the international date format for the date the photos were taken: YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg, -002.jpg, etc. This avoids duplicate file name issues that can crop up at a later date.
I then have the camera reformat the memory card for the next shoot.

  • IPhoto crasht when importing photos and now it doesn't open anymore. Please help!

I was importing photos in iPhoto, when the program crasht. I tried to restart it, but it never opend. I installed it again and again and made a software update - still doesn't work. What can I do? Please help!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Is it possible to control the naming convention used by Aperture when importing photos?  If so, how

When I import photos from my camera, I have them placed into projects based on the date the photos were taken. However, I do not like the naming convention used by Aperture as it causes the projects to sort into a non-chronologial order. The convention is MMM-DD-YYYY and I want to change it to YYYY-MM-DD. Is it possible in Aperture 3.2.4 to do this?

In the Import  panel you can edit the preset for the file name format to "Image year - image month - image day - index" for example; the preset for folder names seems to be gone in Aperture 3,3 - at least I cannot find it any longer. You only seem to be able to enter the folder name manually in the Import panel.
