Remoed Hard Drive and Lost Display

My daughter's black Macbook did the flashing question mark folder thing yesterday and the HD started making little clicking noises. No HD showed when using the Disk Utility on the Install DVD.
I read about a guy who made things right by removing and reinstalling the HD, so I tried the same thing. Now the display stays black all the time.
This is one of the original overheating MacBooks and was repaired by the store in Asuncion, Paraguay last year. Now this. Daughter distraught, wants a Windows machine. And I already went through the bad HD and logic board on an iBook. Fool me once...

It sounds like your hard drive is faulty. Clicking noises from the hard drive usually mean bad things. When you removed the drive you either reinserted the drive incorrectly (upside down or not fully seated) or the drive finally died. I would suggest rechecking your work to see if you can get the machine to at least begin to boot. If the hard drive is seated correctly (check the RAM as well) and it still does not boot I would suggest removing the battery and power adapter and pressing the power button for 30 seconds. If still nothing then I would try a different hard drive or bring it to an Apple Store or certified repair shop to have them take a quick look at it.
FYI, Apple uses standard hard drives that every manufacturer uses. If you did have another hard drive failure I would look at why the drives are failing. Living in Paraguay can be a large contributor to the failures. The heat and moisture in that part of the world can wreak havoc on computer parts. You might also look at how your daughter treats the machine. Moving or dropping the notebook while powered up will eventually cause a drive to fail.

Or, you can upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

I purchased elements 9 for iMac as a paid download 10/23/2015, recently I had to replace my computer's hard drive and lost elements. I had read that downloaded purchases would be available for 3 years but, when I click onto the serial number of that order it isn't active. By clicking onto the link it should take me to the site where I can re download the elements 9 but, it doesn't do anything.  Unfortunately calling Adobe did not help, they will not address any elements questions over the phone, there's a recording directing all elements questions to this forum.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.       Diana

  • Help.......I moved my LR5 catalog to a new hard drive and lost my COLLECTIONS

I moved my LR5 catalog to a new hard drive and lost my COLLECTIONS.  In the collections i get the messageI then locate the file in the new drive :
i locate the file and receive this message
How can i get the Collection to redirect to the new location??   I have about  a LOT of missing pics in Collections.
    Thank you!  Jamie

    Thank your for responding.......
To clarify....I moved LIGHTROOM to a new hard drive....including 1) Working catalogs, 2) Working exports, and 3) Working Originals.  I now know i did not follow correct procedure for "moving a catalog".  I dragged  it to the new hard drive. Yikes!!
(I was at Imaging last week and spoke to Julianne Kost, she recommended that i use the FIND link....but this gave me the same result as i am speaking about above.)
To Clarify......The Collections are listed. The target path to the images did not change when i moved to the new hard drive.
There is an exclamation point in the right hand corner of the images in each collection.  When i click on the exclamation mark i get the message....."“JK_120214_7782.NEF” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  I then locate the file IN THE NEW current DRIVE...at which time i click on it and i receive the message.....
this file is associated with another photo in the catalog.... each file can only be associated with one photo.  Then if i choose to show in library....it points to the image in the FOLDER  tab...which is in fact where the image is located.
Up to this point, when i need one of these older collections i have had to recreate.  i have manually gone to the original.....in the FOLDER tab, found the image and added to the Collections again.  Then i go back and delete all the files with the ! ......a long and tedious task.  I was hoping there was an easier way to recreate my "collections".
Initially i was going to just MOVE the entire library again ( the correct way) ....which i should've done i believe.  Now i have imported more jobs and have created additional collections , so i'd love to find a short cut!
I hope this is a bit more clear!!
    Thank you.

  • I wiped the hard drive and lost lightroom...please help before wife kills me...

Hi folks!  First post here so go easy on the newb...
Our computer got slammed with a virus a few days back and we had to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything.  So we lost lightroom.  The original version we had was downloaded to begin with... so the only serial number we had was wiped with the rest of the hd. (bonehead, i know)  We do have an upgrade serial number from when we upgraded our lightroom a while back, but it is useless without the "original SN#" which we don't have.
Is there anything we can do?
    Thanks!
    Daryl & Haley

Time to get paranoid.  For the future, backup everything, especially serial numbers and the like.  I have a program in which I store all passwords, logins, serial numbers, etc that I need. Of course it is encrypted and it takes a password to get into it, but that is only ONE password. It is a desktop/mobile application, so it gets synced with my phone.  (We travel a lot, so I need this information when we travel).   All downloaded products and associated stuff  live on an external drive and are backed up to another external drive.  There is another copy made occasionally that lives offsite.  I put a text file in the "products" directory for each program in which I ALSO have the serial number and any additional information about installation -- like what you need to install an upgrade, etc.  I have learned to be paranoid through experiences similar to yours...
I do admit though that the companies are getting much better about forgotten serial numbers than they used to be, so it looks like you are saved this time.
I hope you have a copy of the database and the images?  The images are truly irreplaceable, and the database is valuable.

  • Upgraded ops and hard drive and lost all my folders in thunderbird. How do I retrieve them?

I was using windows xp and my computer was hacked so I had to get a new hard drive and I also upgraded to windows 7. After installing thunderbird I noticed that all of my folders were missing. I had folders specifically for emails from my bank, certain cites that included my passwords for those accounts, utility payment records and on and on. Now I can't even find where to make a personal folder for all of my new e-mails that I need to keep. I really want to retrieve my old folders and incorporate them into my thunderbird that I currently have downloaded on this new system.

Your folders are on your old hard drive is my guess.Did you copy any of your data over when you got the new drive?

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
        •    Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
        •    Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating.

  • Had to wipe my hard drive and lost my purchases. Help?

I know how to get purchases off my ipod and on to my new itunes but I have one little problem that I hadn't anticipated. The day I had my hard drive wiped I bought some music and hadn't yet had the chance to put it on my ipod. Is there some way I can get these purchases back or do I have to beg the 'rents for more money to re-purchase the songs?

The iTS terms of purchase allow you one download. It is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
With that said, the iTS has been known to allow a second d/l under certain circumstances. You can contact the iTS web based customer service via this page and plead your case if you want - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/

  • I had a new hard drive and lost all my website info

    HI
I have just had a new HD as my computer just had a spaz attack. I thought I had everything backed up but I am not sure if I have done my iWeb properly as I can't get the info. i have all my website published to a folder and I thought that this was how to keep it sfae but now on my new HD I open iweb and I don't know how to put it all back, if at all possible. It must all be somewhere and I have published to Mac. PPlease help me before I start redoing it.

Yes, it does. But if that folder to which you published is still available, then some of the resources (such as images and text-images) can be dragged & dropped to your second-attempt iWeb site.
Meanwhile, consider regularly backing up via the free "SuperDuper!". It can create a bootable clone from which you can temporarily boot after which you can try to fix your internal HD via Disk Utility. Plus you can recover individual files (such as iWeb's Domain) from that bootable clone.

  • I lost my hard drive and lost all my iTunes purchases, well now it keeps saying my computer is not authorized to make purchases. Help I'd like to get all my past purchases back and I want to know why I cannot make purchases now. I have money in my account

I cannot make purchases, as well as it says my computer is not authorized to make purchases

Open iTunes, select Authorize this computer from the Store menu.
You may be able to recover from your iPod Touch with a third-party utility such as Phone to PC.

  • I changed the format to an external drive and lost everything that was on it.

I changed the format on an external hard drive and lost everything that was on it. Is there a way to recover what was on it?

    1) Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard (with the Optional Rosetta) into it and then you can dual-boot (System Preferences:Startup Disk) into Snow Leopard and run FCE 3.5 there.
    2)  Use one of the following methods to install FCE 3.5 into Mavericks:
    a)  Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/
    b)  Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:  http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html
Reports on this forum seem to confirm that Final Cut Studio 2 will continue to operate in Mavericks once it is functionally installed, albeit some plug-ins may fail to function.  FCE 3.5 is the same generation as FCS2, and presumably will continue to operate in Mavericks, as well.

  • Moving LR5 catalog (Irdata & Ircat) to a new hard drive and photos. Lost all meta data - How do I move meta data along with catalog?

I moved LR5 catalog (Irdata & Ircat) to a new hard drive and photos. Lost all meta data - How do I move meta data along with catalog?
The meta data for each image is missing.
I have over 2,000 images. I don't want to go back through each image and add meta data.
Is there some way to move everything?

No, do not re-import your images. I assume you can see the thumbnails in the library module, just cannot access the full images, right? If this is the case there should be an exclamation mark in the top right corner of every one of your pictures and you only have to tell LR where the images are now.
Click the exclamation mark of one of the images and a dialog window should pop-up, telling you that LR cannot find the file, but with an option to locate it. Press "Locate" and navigate to the folder on your new HD where the file is. If in the new external HD you kept the same folder structure that you had on the internal disk, LR will be able to find all your images and re-link them to the database without further intervention.

after some sorting out your article, I clicked on a question mark with the message find the missing folder.  This brought me to a page where I could choose a folder by year and click on it.  The question marks disappeared and the photos were available.  In some cases I had to click on the year folder for each subfolder by date.
