Remote access my office mac from my home mac

I know this is not the right forum for this, but I am not sure which one is and so I am asking this question here in the hopes that someone will direct me to the right place.
If I want to access my office mac from home, what program do I need to use? (Apple Remote Desktop?) Where can I find detailed instructions?
Other pertinent details:
I have a PB at home and one at the office, both running OSX.3.
Both are on a wireless network.
Office is behind a firewall.
Because both computers are on a wireless network, their IP addresses are of the form 10.0.1.xxx. Turning on File sharing on the office computer and then doing "ssh [email protected].....etc. does not seem to work.
Ideally I want to be able to remotely run programs on the office computer. I know this ability exists for Windows XP (and my colleagues use it), so it MUST exist for Macs.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
NS

ns,
Apple Remote Desktop and Timbuktu Pro are worthy programs; you can achieve the same effects with free VNC (virtual network connection) software. Essentially, you set one Mac up as a VNC server, the other as a VNC client, and connect the client to the server. Check Version Tracker and/or MacUpdate for such freeware as VNCThing (OS 9 client), OSXvnc (OS X server), and Chicken of the VNC (OS X client).
The firewall will require you to set up port forwarding. I've actually found the FAQ and help info at the site for the Windows program UltraVNC along with PortForward more than enough to figure how to set up a VNC link to a Windows PC in my wife's office that could be accessed by either my office Mac (before turning on the link encryption) or her home PC. Adding / using SSH is somewhat more complicated and outside of my firsthand experience, but there are references at e.g. SSH VNC Tunneling (try Googling "SSH VNC Mac"). See for example:
Homemade Dot-Mac: Remote Control
MacMod - Your Mac Modding HQ
VNC Sessions From Off-Campus
Note that if you have the usual dynamic IP account at home and a static IP at work, it will be easier to set up the work computer as the server since the IP number will be a fixed address. If both computers are on dynamic IP accounts, the server's IP number will have to be checked locally before connecting remotely (one reason ISPs can charge extra for static IP accounts).

  • I have a time capsule connected directly to fiber connection. I have connected a windows server directly to TC and configured it for remote desktop connection. From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home. What config I need on TC?

I have a time capsule directly connected to fibre optic point out. All pcs and macs are connected wirelessly to the internet. I have connected a windows server pc to TC. When configured for Remote desktop connection, I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet. I guess I need to change some settings in TC to get some ip adress for the remote desktop connection from my home. Anyone who can help me out? Appreciate it.

I am a little lost now.. I have read again your title and your first post.. and they seem inconsistent.
    In the title you state.
From my interanet I can access srvr but not from my home.
Interanet is not a word I know.. I assumed intranet...are you talking about internet or intranet? And just to be clear say WAN or LAN.. !! Is your home part of the interanet??
In the first post you state,
I can access windows server from within interanet but don't know how to access it from internet.
Now this is more normal.. the issue is not in the home at all, it is accessible from there but fails from internet. If this is correct, then you can do a few obvious things to determine where the problem is.
But first I need to know are you actually testing from a different internet connection to your home lan.. you are not just trying the public IP from inside the LAN as that will fail due to the TC not doing NAT Loopback.
I am also assuming the TC is the only router in the network, and has the public IP on the WAN interface.
And I am also assuming you have turned on the ping responder and you can actually ping your public ip from the internet and get a response. This helps no end in figuring out where there are issues. Strange but I have no idea if there is a ping responder in the TC WAN so you might need to forward that as well. Also if you have a dynamic public ip address are you using dyndns or no-ip or some other service to connect.
    1. Test bypassing the TC.. plug the internet connection straight into the windows server,, and test if you have access. If yes, the TC is the problem.. if not, your setup on the windows server is wrong.. look at firewall in particular.
    2. Assuming from test 1 the TC is the problem, Post the screen shots of the port forwarding setup for us to look at.. that is by far the easiest way to check it out.
There are lots of references to port forwarding in the TC.. eg
    http://must-know-mac.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-port-forward-time-capsule.html
The things that generally go wrong are firewall on the computer that is accepting the port.
The ISP doesn't allow connections on a particular port. (not likely in your case)
The router is behind another router.. double NAT will kill any port forward.
Upnp has already allocated a port.. not an issue as TC doesn't use upnp although a reboot of everything after you set port forwards is well worth it.. amazing how things don't stick properly without a reboot.
IP on the receiving device is not static and so changes.
Not enough or right type of ports are opened. This is always messier than it looks as one port is often not enough for two way communications.

  • Is there a way to sign in on your mac from another persons mac

I was just wondering if anyone new how you could sign into your mac from another persons mac. I seem to remember there being mention of that in the keynote for Lion or Mountain Lion. Do you have to set up a remote desktop thing or is there a basic way to do it? If so how do you do it?
    Thanks,
    Jon

Yes, but how you do it depends on what it is you wish to do. If you wish to control your Mac from another Mac, use Screen Sharing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11150
You can also set up file sharing so you can access the files of your Mac from another Mac:

  • Port Set-up for Access to office PC from Home Mac

    Hello,
I have a G5 at home with a AEBS (g) where I manage my own website via FTP and have a home network.
I just opened a new office where I have a PC (to manage the security cameras), an iBookG4 and will buy a PowerMac in a month. I just set up a new AEBS (n) and it works great to connect to the internet. Since it is a new office I have never had to connect to the office PC from home and I need to do that to see the cameras over the internet.
Also, I want to be able to manage my website from the office via FTP.
I know that these two things are done by setting up port forwarding. However, I have very limited knowledge about Networks and connectivity so I would ask anyone to explain it as if it was "Port Forwarding set-up for Dummies".
I have 5 static IPs that my ISP gave me in case they are useful.
    Thanks,
    elto

    Hi Duane:
Thanks so much for your input. To answer your questions, I have a Netopia Modem (from bellsouth) which is compatible with 802.11g. Also, I have a Netgear Switch for the 3 computers I have on the network (iBook, Dell PC and a new MacPro).
For some reason I am not able to port foward so that I can access a computer from my house. I already assigned a Static IP to the computers and nothing.
    Regards,

  • Unable to connect to my home PC from my home Mac using Windows Remote Desktop

i have downloaded from the Microsoft website and also the Application from the App store and both fail to connect. i have connected to my PC using the migration assistant so they are able to recognise each other.
    on the Mac:
    - downloaded the app and also done the download from MS website - both fail and suggest to check that remote access is enabled.
    on the PC:
    - have my Ipaddress from "IPConfig"
    - have enabled remote access through windows firewall
The PC is on and has a password enabled
    Error on App:
"Unable to connect to remote PC. Please verify remote desktop is enabled, the remote pc is turned on and available on the network and try again"
both are connected to the internet and on the same home network. Can anyone please advise to any additional steps as this seems as though this should be really straightforward. as another note i don't have another firewall software interrupting - am just
using windows firewall until i can get this working.

  • Office 2010 from pc to mac? possible?

Ok so i have been a windows user for years, i recently decided to purchase a mac. so far so good but i was wondering if its possible to transfer the microsoft office 2010 license to my mac without having to purchase the software again. I wont be using office on the pc anymore. and even if i do i have 2 licenses.
i called microsoft but their only answer is basically to purchase office for mac.(i expected this answer since they want to make the money)
maybe someone knows how to do this. maybe its just not possible. please comment.

The response is accurate. If you want to dedicate to Mac moving forward it would not hurt to call MSoft and ask if you can "surrender" your Windows version and pay (or for free) get a Mac Copy. Sometimes they are very friendly at these companies. This worked with Adobe for me when move Acrobat Pro from Win to Mac.
I am very spoiled with Office at my age unfortunately so the open source programs simply don't appeal to me. I pray for the day that Apple's offering of Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are so fluid I can dump M$ yet still waiting for that.

  • Is it possible to remote-access my time-capsule to my home and downloads directly to it?

    Hello,
I have only Macbook Air and iPhone.
I was wondering if its possible I could remotely access my time-capsule at home while I'm away and send downloads to it,
Once I get back the downloads are finished.

Is it possible to block access to the TC external hard drive
I am guessing here, that you may mean access to the internal hard drive on the TC
Set up a disk password for the Time Capsule hard drive.....and only give it to those that you want to have access to the hard drive.
This is not a foolproof method.....there are none, actually.....but it will keep honest folks away.

  • Remote access VPN to server from outside and server reach internet on the same time

    Dear,
I have problem in my ASA 5515-X , when i make Remote access VPN to servers in inside zone the internet connection disconnected in the servers, or when i have internet in servers, the remote access cant reach servers.
the configuration for server as static NAT for each server, and the connection of VPN is to another public IP but in the same subnet of NAT ip.
    server1 : 10.10.10.2 nat to 5.6.7.8
    server2: 10.10.10.3 nat to 5.6.7.9
    server3: 10.10.10.4 nat to 5.6.7.10
    VPN connection to 5.6.7.12
is there any solution for this senario, remote vpn to servers and the same time the servers have internet readability for download updates .. etc

    Hi,
So it seems that the problem is with lacking a NAT0 configuration
You could modify the below configuration to match your networks/IP addresses used. In the below configuration I presume that you have interfaces "inside" and "outside".
    object network SERVER-NETWORK
     subnet <server network address> <network mask>
    object network VPN-POOL
     subnet <vpn pool network address> <network mask>
    nat (inside,outside) 1 source static SERVER-NETWORK SERVER-NETWORK destination static VPN-POOL VPN-POOL
Just insert the correct address related information and change the "object" and interface names if required.
This configuration will tell the ASA that no NAT will be performed for traffic between the VPN-POOL and SERVER-NETWORK. The NAT configuration is bidirectional. With this configuration the Static NAT configurations will continue to work for the servers Internet traffic and this NAT0 configuration will be applied only to the VPN Client traffic.
    Hope this helps :)

  • Remote access certificate authentication: moving from sha-1 to sha-2

We have an ASA5520 supporting remote access clients using anyconnect; currently the environment is leveraging certificates using the sha-1 hash.      Our CA will no longer be deploying certificates with sha-1 and new users will be getting certificates with sha-2.  My question is in regard to migrating to the use of new certificates using sha-2.
Will we need to deploy new certificates on the ASA and/or legacy clients, or will we be able to support clients with both hashes with no change?
Any information you can offer will be appreciated.
    Per

That depends on the CA. Many CAs give you the choice between SHA-1 and SHA256 when you submit your CSR.
For other CAs like StartSSL, the used hashing is the same as the one used for the CSR. In that case you have to generate the CSR manually with openSSL or something similar.

  • Remote access to a single application on a mac os 10.4 server (vmware)

    Hello all,
I need to give multiple users (all on mac's) access to a shared windows accounting application.
We have absolutely no windows servers in the organisation and i was wondering if it would be possible to load the accounting app as a vmware fusion (or parallels) session on one of our Xserve's and only give remote users (using remote desktop or vnc) access to that single application ..
I'm basically trying to "emulate some of the functionality of Citrix/Windows Remote Desktop on a MAC OS 10.4 server ?
Have anyone ever done anything similar ? Or have any hints in relation to solving this issue ?
    Thanks in advance,

To give you a direction to go in, you might want to look at the possibility of having one dedicated PC that runs the application, and use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection to connect to it from the Macs. I think all you need is XP Pro to receive RDC connections. You might be able to use an emulator to set that up, but I don't know well how emulators handle RDC if at all. The problem is that you can only have one user connected to it at a time, but emulating it wouldn't do anything to help that.
    Hope this helps.
