Remote Access on Home Network

I have two Macs running 10.5.3. One is a MacBook Pro, the other is a Power Mac G4 tower upgraded w/ a dual-1.6ghz processor. When the G4 was running Tiger, I had no problem accessing it from the MacBook Pro. I could share the G4 screen and manage its contents remotely from the MacBook Pro Finder.
I just installed Leopard on the G4 using "Erase and Install," and now it does not appear in the sidebar of the laptop Finder windows at all. Also, I can only share the screen of the laptop from the G4. I have been able to access the G4 by using "Connect to Server," but it used to be much easier, and I can't figure out why it isn't still.
In the "Sharing" System Preference on each machine, I've checked File Sharing, Printer Sharing, Remote Login, Remote Management (which covers Screen Sharing) and Remote Apple Events. The wireless hub is an Airport Extreme base station (the gigabit-ethernet model).
Is there some Library file I need to get rid of? I'm stumped.

plre72> I have tried to download and install SymSMB
plre72> but it fails each time I try to download a Trial license.
SymSMB product line is discontinued a few years ago and you should be able see a message about this during attempt to download Trial licence. In the same message you can see that new software products are available at www.telexy.com
If you will go on that site, you may find SymNAS and SymSync software or you may have a look at SymNC software collection.
Its great that you have managed to setup FTP client, but keep in mind that SMB Client and Server type software can provide more convenient and natural access to file structures.

  • Accessing my home network through the internet?

Is it possible to access my home network through the internet via my AirPort Express? I would like to have full access to my Mac Mini's hard drive from my MacBook while at work.

Yes. You will need to enable file sharing on your Mac Mini (via Sharing in System Preferences) and then you will need to port forward all your ports (since I don't know exactly what file sharing method you will be using) of your Mac Mini via the AirPort Utility.

  • How can a Windows user remotely access their Home folder on a MacOSX Server

I have a staff member who would like to remotely access (ourside of our LAN) their Home folder on our Mac OSX server. Anyone know and willing to share the process?
    Thanks

    Hi Brad!
Generally, a VPN solution is best to allow someone access to your company network. VPN provides security and access to some or all of your company's network resources.
If AFP is allowed to pass through the VPN tunnel, then your user would connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "afp://servername".
Or if your user's home folder is also shared as a Windows share, your user could connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "smb://servername".
    Hope this helps! bill

Can I remote access windows 7 PC on 27" iMac, on home airport extreme network, as I dont have broadband but use my iPhone as a personal hotspot to connect to the internet on iMac, if so how do I do this

You could use some thing like LogMeIn to remotely connect to a computer at work witch is running ARD.

  • HT3728 My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home network each day (intermittently) between about 1000-1800. My modem is working properly, and I can get on-line by hooking my computer straight to my modem, so I know it's the Time Capsule at fault. I

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

    Any ideas?
    Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule
    Click Edit
    Click the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

  • I can't access my university VPN with my iPad or iPhone but I can access it with my Mac. I was wondering if there is a simple way so that I can remotely access my home computer from the iPad, turn on the Mac VPN and then access the school network?

The iosx and open VPN app on the iPad/phone aren't compatible w my school's VPN, but my Mac is via tunnelblick. I would really like to have VPN access from my tablet so I can access journals without undergoing a tedious process.
Has anyone encountered this and found a remedy? I'm imagining an app from the tablet that can access the Mac at home to turn on the VPN to the school and then have access.. But then I'm thinking id be reading through 2 screens then formatting/resolution could be a problem.
Another thought was setting up a VPN at home so that my iPad can connect to my computer at home via VPN which would then allow me easy access to journals. But I'm lacking experience in this, especially a security issue as I'm going from point A to point C to get back to point B.
    I'm open to any suggestions.
    Thanks

You should be able to use the OpenVPN Connect app running on your iPad to connect your iPad to the VPN directly. It is an official OpenVPN client for iOS devices.
In what way is it "not compatible"? Have you tried it? Tunnelblick is an OpenVPN client, so your school's VPN is using the OpenVPN protocol. That means any OpenVPN client should be able to access it. (It is possible, but unlikely, that your school uses encryption that is not available on the iPad, but that would be very unusual.)
Otherwise, a remote control app on your iPad would let you control your Mac at home. "Back to My Mac", for example, would allow you to control your Mac remotely. The tricky part of this is that usually a VPN is set up to send all Internet traffic via the VPN server, and I'm not sure how that would work with "Back to My Mac".

  • Remotely accessing the office network connected to E1000

    Hello;
I'm the IT Manager for a Small Non-Profit Organization(Helping build homes, giving education, health care for the poor).

  • Remotely Accessing my Apple Network

    Hi
I have an Apple Network using Time Capsule. I travel frequently and would like to access my network from various locations to access the USB drive attached to my Time Capsule.
Would someone smarter than me on this please give me some step by step guidance. Both machines are Macs (iMac and MacBook Air) running 10.5.6.
    Thanks
    Herbert

The easy. Apple's MobileMe subscription and use "Back-to-My-Mac".
More work, but less secure. Configure your home router to forward port 548 to your Time Capsule. Or configure the router to forward 548 to your iMac.
More secure, have the ssh port 22 forwarded to your iMac, then create ssh tunnels for port 548 along with a tunnel for VNC port 5900.
    ssh -L 22548:localhost:548 -L 22590:localhost:5900 [email protected]
afp://localhost:22548 # use in Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server
vnc://localhost:22590 # use in Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server
The port forwarding approaches should also include getting a free dynamic DNS name from a service such as <http://no-ip.com> or <http://dyndns.org>, which will make it easy to find your home Mac on the web.
NOTE: "Back-to-My-Mac" should be the easiest and give you the most accessability.

  • Remote connect to home network

I will be on vacation and taking my laptop. I would like to connect to my Mini back home.I am file sharing with the Mini through a wireless connection - Airport Extreme.
I will have WiFi at my Vacation destination.
I believe I use my IP address to make a connection, but am unsure as to how I accomplish this.
    Any help would be apprciated.
    Thanks!

In System Preferences>Network>Locations>New Location, just make a new one named Away or such, likely just needs to be set to using DHCP under the TCP/IP tab..

  • How can I Access TC outside of my home network?

    Hi everyone:
I am new to the MAC World. We just bought my daughter a Mac Book Pro to use in University then added the time capsule at home so she would be able to back up her work over the internet and we would be able to use the WIFI and TC here at home.  We get to the University, set everythin up and Airport goes into a loop searching for the TC; it appears it cant see the TC.  We are using the wired internet through the school then go to a wireless router in my daughters dorm to allow her to access the internet both with her phone and computer.
Is there a simple fix for this?  I also have three other PC's other laptops and several cell phones accessing the home network at any given time but only need access outside my home to the TC for the MAC Book Pro.  The sales rep at Future Shop said it would be easy to hook up and access.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Martin

Ok.. you have to work out the way you are going to access the TC..
    There are basically three methods..
    1. Direct access using AFP.. you need a static public IP and the TC as the main internet router.. then you need to turn on internet access and password the hard disk. The college has to have port 548 open.
If you do not have a static public IP then you can use ddns service but there is no client in the TC.. so you will have to figure out a way to update the service.
    2. Use BTMM with icloud. This is the Apple method. It actually uses vpn..(the vpn is locked to apple use only but it is not available to end user).. The requirements are 7.6.1 firmware and lion or ML on a Mac computer. I am not sure of the ports because the link to the Apple cloud is separate from the vpn to your home system.
    3. VPN.. that means you need to bridge the TC and use a decent quality vpn modem / router or combo thereof.
VPN are not for the faint of heart.. it can take a lot of work to get running but offers the best security.. you will need to change the network equipment in your house more than likely.. using a pc / mac as a vpn server is possible.. but messy.
There are also easy ways to at least access the home computer.. teamviewer for example. This is likely blocked by the college though.
Double NAT is where you put a router on a private IP behind another router on a private IP.. that makes port forwarding close to impossible.

  • [SOLVED] Remote Access to a home Arch system behind the router.

    Hello,
I am trying to remotely access my home Arch system from school. I did try doing something and this is what I did:
    1. Used DynDns and NO-IP to setup a free domain, I thought NO-IP script was easy to run so I tested this on NO-IP.
    2. I then installed Openssh.
    3. Then I have setup the Port forwarding on the router to point to my ssh port (change from 22).
    4. I tried to ping, the domain name from NO-IP with no response.
What I want to ask is... is there any better way of doing this?
I dont need a desktop access, simple ssh should do for now.
    Thank You
    Gopi

OK, I have solved this by this process. Will work only if the router supports the DynDNS. I am assuming that you have created a DynDNS account, its free for 2 domains. I also had to make my computer use STATIC IP from my router, just specify any IP address outside the DHCP range.
    1. On the router, add the details about the DynDNS account. On my Belkin Router, I had to go to Firewall -> DDNS -> DynDNS and give the details and also enable it.
    2. By doing the above step, we don't have to install the client for DynDNS.
    3. On the router again, setup the port forwarding, again (on my Belkin Router) go to Firewall -> Virtual Servers -> Add the IP and the port numbers, I had to use the same number for both the incoming and the private port, though for other routers the number can differ?
    4. On the computer, I installed the openssh and then changed the login port to the one specified in the router for forwarding.
    5. Make the router and ssh logins as safe as possible. I understand that opening the router is not safe so I have to warn you.
I can now login using my DynDNS domain name from anywhere woohoo!

  • How do I remotely access a friend's Windows XP desktop using my ibook?

I hope I am posting this question in the right forum/thread:
I am not quite a newbie on the Mac, however when it comes to issues such as remote access, virtual private networks, etc., I am pretty much lost. I've even poured over the posts here to see if they answer any of my questions, but confusion is setting in, so I thought I'd just put my question out there to see if anyone can give me a simple answer:
I have a friend who keeps having trouble with anything and everything to do with her Windows XP computer, from passwords to router/modem configurations. When she calls, I need to stop everything I'm doing and drive to her house to try to resolve her issue. It would save me (and her) a lot of energy and heartache if I could merely remotely access her computer (she has windows xp home edition) to help her out.
What is the best way to remotely access her PC from my MAC?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Microsoft provides a Remote Desktop Client for Mac OS X. Check it out here - http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/download/ misc/rdcupdate103.xml&secid=80&ssid=10&flgnosysreq=True
For actual connection, I have not tried this, but if you get her public IP, you should be able to connect to her PC.

There are some apps that allow you to do this...
    Check out LogMeIn. https://secure.logmein.com/products/ios/
I do it the hard way, I set up a VPN on my home network and use
a VNC program on the iPad to access my home network.
