Remote access via ftp

Hi.
I am trying to set up remote access to my mac so I can upload files to it remotely from a PC. I want the simplest free solution as I simply want occasional access to back up files from my work PC to my home mac. I have got 90% of the way, but fallen at the final hurdle.
I am using OSX Leopard 10.5.8 and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router
I am trying to access my imac via ftp as this appears to be the simplest route. So far I have done the following:
(a) Followed the advice in "Mac OSX Missing Manual" and portforwarding.com: i.e. ...
(b) Set up a static IP address on my mac through system preferences. This is working as I can access the internet fine.
(c) Turned off "Block anonymous internet requests" in the router settings
(d) Set up port forwarding of port 21 using the static IP address I have set up
(e) In system preferences, turned on file sharing using ftp
(f) Tested access using Safari - typed in my local static IP address as specified in the file sharing ftp box in the sharing section of system preferences. I logged in with my main account log in info. This worked - I immediately got a finder window pop up with my folders visible. The ftp server was also mounted on my desktop.
(g) Tested access using Safari via my public IP address. This was much slower. I eventually got the login box, but when I entered the same main account login info I eventually got an error message saying password / username were incorrect. They weren't, as I have tried this several times. (I don't have access to a PC on another network to test that way.)
Very grateful for any help.
Thanks

I am not sure which type of FTP Apple uses but this will give you the differences the in firewall policy for active and passive. http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html you will need to set the firewall accordingly.
You may also have problems with the firewall in use at work, it depends on how its been locked down.
It depends on how much time you have to spend on the problem. There are free remote control applications that include file transfer, have a look at this site http://www.teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx , there is a free version available but I have not used this software. There are other similar products some free, some cost.
If you cannot get any answers to your question at least there are other esiaer options open to you.

  • Help For Remote Access Via VPN

    Need Help
what cisco product or router specification or model  can we use for VPN connection in our remote site via Internet Connection
    thanks Godbless

There are several options here, but more information is probably needed to give a good recommendation.
    1.  What type of VPN?  A site to site VPN that stays up, or remote VPN that is more on demand?
    2.  What type of Internet access to have at your remote site?
    3.  Are you going to also use this as a gateway to the Internet or will this device sit to the side or behind your gateway?
My first inclination is that if you just need occasional remote access to your remote site for support issues check out the ASA 5505.  Depending on where you will place it and what amount of user traffic will flow through it, you may be able to get by with just a base license and use IPSec remote VPN.

  • So TC can not be accessed via FTP?

I am currently set up fine with a router, external hard drive for backups, etc.
My new need is to backup an offsite computer, and I want to do so via ftp (or sftp). I can buy a network based hard drive that supports FTP which are inexpensive. I was hoping to justify buying a TC to take over everything, but I can not find anywhere evidence that TC supports FTP access.
This is unfortunate. Unless I am wrong and someone can correct me, but due to this limitation I won't be buying one.

You're right, you can't use FTP directly to a Time Capsule. But sftp works for sure if it's mounted to the desktop of a computer on the LAN. But there's no ftp or ssh daemon running on the Time Capsule. Just AFP over TCP and, I believe, SMB.

  • Remore access via ftp to homehub.

    Hi,
I have a number of site that backup and thn download the backup file via ftp.
I am unable to access my bt homehub 3 and then connet to my NAS so that the file can be downloaded.
I have tried entering the ip address of the hub and the sub directory on my NAS - this just fails.  (I believe this should be possible without the need to register for a dyns service).
    Any ideas, please?
    Cheers,
    Mike

You can only use your public Internet address, as that is the only one routable over the Internet.
As your public IP can change, due to the home hub disconnecting, or the PPP session being refreshed by BT, you need to be able to keep track of this address.
That is why a DDNS service is needed. If your public IP changes, the home hub will report this change to your DDNS service, and make sure that your host name always points to it.
Your home hub needs to be configured to allow this to work.

  • Remote access method "FTP & RDS"

How do you update pages using the FTP & RDS remote access
method? Any file that I "GET" from the server and "POST" back do
not look the same. Links for .jpg and such are missing and pages
    lose their structure.

Most of the time, sites defined using this method are
    evidence of operator
error in defining the site. Unless you understand what FTP
    & RDS servers
are, you should not define sites in this way. Just define
    them as "Site"
not as "FTP & RDS Server". When you select the latter
    option, you are
actually editing the live files directly on the server -
    thus, there is no
local site, per se, and there is no PUT or GET. Please remove
    this site
definition, and define a new site making the proper
    selection.

  • Working with remote site via FTP - getting html only

I''m using DW to remotely work with the website via FTP. Is
it possible to make it NOT download all the assosiated files with
the html, that I'm edtiting? I switched on the prompts in getting
and putting stuff, but it still tries to download or upload
additional stuff. I need it to deal only with html.
    Thanks for any clues.

Works good? Make one silly mistake and you are toast.
Use a version control system instead. DW has a primitive one
    in
Checkin/Checkout, but it may be all you need.
I would NEVER do what you are doing in a multi-user
    environment....

  • Remote access via internet

Have an Vitek DVR with several cameras and after correctly configuring port forwarding on the router and input the IP to the DVR, I am able to view the camera pictures without any problems on the MacBook Pro. However, being able to view the camera results from the IPHONE via remote access, through Safari, requires an APP. Having tried the VITEK DVRViewer app, and half a dozen other apps, I am unable to connect via the iphone. I contacted VITEK and was informed that they are aware of the problem, which they say is due from the IOS6 update, an updated app was submitted to Apple for approval, which would solve the issue.
I have found many hits on the YouTube with the same issues. Does anyone know of a solution, or if they were told by VITEK of the same solution?
    Thank you

This would not seem to be an issue with Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Macs and the topic of this forum. I'd suggest you take this up in the iPhone forum, where you'll be more likely to encounter someone attempting to run the same app and hence provide suggestions.
    Regards.

  • Remote access via base station

I am thinking of buying a new base station, but for one purpose only if anyone can help me. I would like to access media files on an attached hard drive to the base station remotely over the internet. I have a router/ modem, which can do this if I open a port but I would rather have a ringfenced base station attached to it that I could access from abroad etc.
Is it possible to open a port on the base station to allow password protected internet traffic to access files like .m4v on an attached hard drive ? If so how can this be set up without allowing access to my home computers as well?
I would be grateful for any assistance.
    thanks
    thank you

There are three available methods to access a connected disk. LAN acces (internal) is the default and what you'd use for TC as well as just a remote fileshare/NAS. You can choose password level access for the disk or setup individual accounts which is neat as it creates "home" folders for each user if you chose that option.
WAN (Internet/outside your LAN or home private network) is another and you would setup password access to the disk. Not sure if you would need a static ip or setup a dyndns type service so you'd knowyou homerouter's address.
The most secure and easily accessed from over Internet (and third available option) is to setup your MobileMe account in the AirPort Extreme's profile and MM will manage "finding" your home network and it's connection uses IPv6 which has built in encryption layer/tunnel.
Since I've not tried the WAN option I'm looking to see how to remotely access from a PC as well. I think WAN will natively support just the same way the LAN does.

  • Remote access via pppoe - mac add limitation

    Hi,
We have a requirement to provide remote access for a number of individual customers.  I plan on using pppoe for each of these customers as it will give us the ability to control each session individually and apply shaping etc if required.
There will be about 250 customers at the one location and we are using a thrid party supplier to run the connectivity into the site.  I plan on dragging the pppoe sessions back to our network rather than terminating them onsite.
The main issue I have is that the supplier who is running the connectivity into the site for us has a mac address limit of 50.
My question is  - is there any way in which I can still bring the pppoe session back to our network while still remaining under the 50 mac address limit?
I thought perhaps mpls might be the way to go here, but, I'm not too sure.  We're running mosly Cisco 7200's so we might be limited in the options available...
Can any please advise on what might be a suitable option?
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

I don't think PPPoE is a good idea. It introduces a lot of additional requirements, devices, additional client configuration, all complications that are easily avoided with a normal technology, eg. IP routing, GRE (only if necessary), etc.

  • Remote Access Via Dial/PSTN - Options Now PVDM's are EOSale'd

I have a number of very remote sites that cost-effectively only PSTN can be provisioned to for land-line comms,
these dial land lines providing back-up to low-bandwidth satellite comms services.
With the end-of-sale of the PVDM modules for routers, i see dial/PSTN remote access functionality
that Cisco offered with the these as now completely unavailable in the whole Cisco product set. Is there any
dial/PSTN Remote Access concentrator functionality hidden away in any of the Cisco products, or is it truly
Cisco cannot supply a device to service my dial requirements ?? Alternatives ??
    thnks
    Martyn

I've no definitive replacement solution as yet.
Most promising kit so far to replace cisco PVDM functions is remanufactured Portmaster PM3.
All the major vendors seem to have pulled out of dial.
Other than than we may have to run point to point radio to these locations
Sat comms also maybe an option open to u

  • Remote access via internet to another macbook

I would like to access my moms computer when she needs help sometimes via the internet. We both have Macbooks and high speed internet. Before I move away I can install whatever is necessary on her computer. Then if she has computer problems (as she often does) I can go onto her computer to sort it out. (Obviously, I will have to phone her to tell her to open up the computer). Is this a really involved thing that I am asking? I don't really know where to start. I have heard of remote desktop but after reviewing it, it sounds like it is much more than what I am looking for. Any info to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

So why is system prefs saying, "To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh [email protected]" at a shell command prompt."
Is it just because it doesn't know its behind the router?
I have tried telling finder to connect to server; vnc://65.95.40.34 and it just times out.
    I have also tried setting Chicken of the VNC to;
    HOST: 65.95.40.34
    Display: 0
Password: (password that I set for login on her computer)
    This just times out eventually.
I have also tried terminal both ways:
    "ssh [email protected]" and
    "ssh [email protected]"
and it tells me "ssh: connect to host 65.95.40.34 port 22: Operation timed out"
It take a minute or two using any of these methods before it tells me that its timed out.
I have made sure that she has her computer opened up and turned on of course and the settings so it will wake if admin accesses remotely.
Any ideas as to why this wouldn't work?
    Thanks for all the info.

  • Time Capsule remote access via mobile me

    Hi there,
i heard it would be possible to connect to my time capsule even if i am not in my network (at home, in other cities etc) via mobile me service, has anybody experience with this?
I am using mobile me in the trial/test version. Are there more options in the full version?
I need to share data with colleagues in other cities but couldn't find a way to do this so far.
First I tried out a ready nas duo from netgear, a terrible desaster i would not consider to anybody.
Does apple offer any solution without spending more than 500 euro?

This is what I know(and it works) so far.
Using Mobile Me, you must have a Mac to access your TC remotely.
Also, I had to get static IP address(on TC side) to get this to work. I was having trouble using the dynamic address assigned by my ISP. If you get an error message regarding double NAT, chances are you'll need to get a static IP address like I did.
If you get an error message regarding NAT Port Mapping Protocol or UPnP, see 1a. below.
    1. On TC, in manual setup, enter your MM username and password in Back to my Mac.
1a. Make sure that you enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol.
    2. On your mac, enter your MM username and passeord.
2a. Also, enable Back to my Mac.
2b. Keep an eye out for any error messages.
    I hope it helps.

  • Can't Access Site Via FTP

I'm not sure if this is an issue related to my Airport Extreme or my Virgin Superhub...
I have a Superhub that is set to modem mode connected to my AE and there are a couple of websites that I am unable to access via FTP. (I use Transmit as I'm on OSX 10.7.4 and am able to connect to several other websites.) I have only noticed this recently, and can only think it may have been since the 10.7.4 update.
When I am NOT using the AE and the Superhub supplies my wi-fi I CAN connect to these sites. Does anyone know what may be causing the issue?

It can take quite a long time to publish a site. Mine takes more than an hour. And I don't see anything moving in the publishing wheel for about twenty minutes, then slowly the clockwork starts moving. Depending on the size of your site you may have to let it publish (and don't let your mac go to sleep while it is publishing) for more than an hour.
