Remote App 3.0 - Album Artist

iTunes itself (on the Mac and Windows) as well as most if not all iPods and iPads have the ability to browse the music library using Album Artist rather than just plain Artist. It's a setting in the preferences menu. The Remote App 2.* was the sole iOS music playback application that did not have this ability and it was a feature many of us looked forward to in the new release.
And now we have Remote App 3.0 and as far as I can see, there's no way to browse by Album Artist. Or am I missing something?
This may seem like a trivial issue but when you have a big library including compilation albums with various and sundry artists you're really not that interested in seeing the details of, it becomes a real nuisance! In Artist mode you end up having to scroll through a whole string of names you really don't want to see.
Is there in fact a way to do this in Remote App 3.0?
And if not, I'd like to please with those of you in the Apple organization to get this sorted out. Don't you use your own products?!

Issue confirmed.
Resolved with remote update 3.0.1

  • IOS Remote App: How to show Artists instead of Albums in Genres View?

    Hi,
I very frequently use the iOS Remote app on my iPhone to control playback of my iTunes library via my Apple TV and Airport devices.
While I love this app, I find one aspect rather frustrating.
Whenever I go into "Genres" view within the Remote app, it takes me to an Albums view, rather than an Artists view.
For example, if I select "Jazz" as the genre, it shows me a list of Jazz albums, not Jazz artists.
I want to see the list of all Jazz artists, not the list of all Jazz albums.
Is there a way to change this behavior so that I can see Artists within the Genre view, rather than Albums?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Yes - this is VERY annoying.
You might be able to downgrade to a previous version IF it's still on your computer:

I reinstalled Mountain Lion and lost my earlier version.
Apple - Please allow people to download earlier versions of iOS apps.

  • Remote app and Browsing Albums

So, I installed the Remote app directly onto the iPod Touch and set it up with no problems. Within a minute I was able to download, install, browse, and actually control my iTunes library!
I found one snag. I would like to use the Album browse feature, but I see problems with it. One good specific example is the album "Genius Loves Company" (GREAT ALBUM). when I'm browsing my library through this app, the album shows up 12 times and each instance only has one track in it. So, I can only play one song at a time and then the player stops. Very annoying.
Has anyone else seen this? If so, anyone know a fix/workaround?
    Album link: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=219987585&id=12316 7557

Hmm odd one. My first thought here is there's possibly some glitch in the way that Album's files are tagged.
    Try this:
Fire up iTunes. Click on 'music' under the Library. Highlight all the tracks in that album in the main window. Go to File -> Get info (answer 'yes' to the pop-up question about editing multiple items). Under the 'info' tab, re-type the name of the album into the 'album' field, and Hit 'OK'. This will resolve any discrepancies re the tagging of the album name.
Fire up remote again and browse to that album, see if it's fixed the issue.

  • Remote app shows "album artist" after recent update

In January I updated iTunes 9...  to  iTunes 10.5.2. The new database shows "artist" same as before.
Then I had to update the remote app on my iPod touch. Now comes the trouble:
instead of showing "artist" as before in older version of remote app, it shows "album artist"
which effectively destroys the organisation principle of all my music file collection (roughly 600 CD).
I am afraid that changing artist and album artist by rewriting all ID tags will not be helpful,
because then the corresponding iTunes database on my mac will show these fields in wrong order.
Do we have any hope for getting fixed this bug in remote app ?
How to deal with this mess of a situation ?

remote app 2.2 was showing 'artist information' in the 'artist field'.
with the release 2.3 the problem with the 'artist field', showing 'album artist information' started, and with the latest version 2.4 this error still exists!
it would be really nice if someone can tell us if this is an error (as i suppose) and will be fixed, or if this is right and why this was done.
maybe some apple people can answer....
    thanks.

  • Why is Remote app album view different than iTunes?

I use the Remote app on my iPad to control the streaming of my PC's iTunes music library to my stereo.  I like the Album view because I can see most of the album covers. In iTunes 11.1 on my PC, album view displays the albums alphabetically by artist.  i.e. all Beatles albums are listed before any Rolling Stones albums.  But when viewing the same library on my iPad using the Remote app, the albums are listed alphabetically by album title, not by artist.  So each artist's albums are scattered all over.  I don't know about you, but when I'm looking for an album to play, I think about artists, not titles of albums.  But there doesn't seem to be any way to change the way the Remote app orders albums.  Am I missing something?  Is there any way to configure the Remote app to display albums in artist order?

Hi go the first page of the Remote, the one which shows your shared libraries.
Click Settings, and then Sort by Artist tab,
    Hope that helps!

  • Remote app shows 'album artist' instead of 'artist'...

for a normal cd, i have stored the 'artist' name in the 'artist' field and also in the 'album-artist' field.
for a compilation cd, i have stored the 'artist' of a song in the 'artist field'. the 'album-artist' field contains the information 'various artists'.
having done this, remote app 3 shows
the 'album artist' field in the normal list of songs, this means i see 'various artists' instead of the name of the artist (see 1)
in the 'next up' list the information for the same song is shown correctly (see 2)
it seems to me that there is something wrong.
or i misunderstand the meaning of the 'artist album' field.
i do hope, somebody can explain it to me, or apple sees the error and fixes it.
    greez.

i found the solution in the german macuser forum.
obviously i had tagged my mp3 not to the recommended standard.
if you have a compilation, the albumartist field MUST be blank, instead you can mark it as a compilation.
    this solved my problem.

  • Missing artist name in album view using remote app

since updating to itunes 12 and latest remote app artist name is missing in album view

Same problem here. I think it happened when my computers updated my windows itunes to v12 without asking me.

  • Remote App and shuffling a single album

I'm using iTunes 11.0.1.12 on my PC and Remote App 3.0 (598) on my Touch 5G running iOS 6.0.1, and I want to play an album with its songs shuffled. For example, I go to Artists, choose Steely Dan, then "A Decade Of Steely Dan". There's no obvious way to begin playing, so I press the first song, which begins playing. This takes me to "Up Next", which has all the songs from the album I was on, PLUS 7 songs from the album, "Everything Must Go", also by Steely Dan. This makes no sense at all, but I ignore it for the moment, as shuffling is what's on my mind. The thing is, there's no shuffle button on "Up Next", so I click on the tiny album artwork in the upper right corner, and it takes me to the traditional "Now Playing" screen, with the transport controls and big album artwork in the middle. There I find my shuffle button, so I press it, and it turns blue, so I'm all good, right? Wrong! When the next song begins, it's from some other Steely Dan album chosen at random, like "Katy Lied". When I go back to "Up Next", songs from all my Steely Dan albums now appear. All I wanted was to shuffle the one album "A Decade Of Steely Dan" and play just its songs, but this simple thing doesn't appear to be possible. Am I missing something?

Eliciting the bug requires entry to the album in the Remote App through Artists or Genres. I can leave the "Up Next" list displayed in iTunes on the PC and watch it populate with all the following albums when I do this. However, if I enter the album through Composers or Albums, only that album's tracks go into "Up Next". Unfortunately, using Composers to select albums is not a solution at all; for one thing, I only maintain Composer metadata for classical composers. Using Albums isn't really a solution either, because I like to browse by artist or composer. Interestingly, the Remote App groups albums by artist, but it's a flat list and hard to scroll through because there are so many more albums that artists, and while there is a scroll bar (column of dots) to the right, it has no letters to easily go to the p's for, say, Pink Floyd. The Artists view OTOH has letters A-Z instead of dots. I don't get the inconsistency here.
Moreover, I've found that when I press a song to begin playing, the Remote App inconsistently takes me to its "Up Next" screen as I described in my first post vs. its traditional "Now Playing" screen. I've yet to figure out what determines this.

  • Remote App won't list songs when sorted by artist

I'm using the Remote App to control my iTunes running on my PC with Windows XP, it mostly runs fantastic and I love it!  One small and annoying problem though, when I search my library by artist and select an artist, it won't list any songs.  I am also using the remote app on my iPhone for the same iTunes library and have no problems at all!  I thought it may have been an issue with my ID3 tags, however seeing as it is working with my iPhone I'm not sure what the issue could be?????  I love the Remote App and it has made my home audio system fantastic, if only I could sort this small issue!  Any ideas???? Thanks.

There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song is marked as part of a compilation or 2) the song has no album name associated with it.
if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. If you are using iTunes 8 and view the multiple items info box the compilations setting is in the "Options" tab. Setting "Compilations" on your iPod main menu prevents you getting lots of single artist entries when you load an album by various artists.
Also if the tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances (for instance I read somewhere that if you have at least two tracks with different album names the rest will appear), however the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous to all the blanks in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod

  • Adding an entire album to a play list in the remote app?

    Hi,
When generating a play list in the remote app (on ipad) I can add single tracks. But if I want to add several albums I need to add every single track of each album. Is there a way to add (and remove) an entire album at once?

Why is the new music forcing you to only be about singles?
    It's not.
I wanted to add and delet whole albums and to add an entire album to a play list enough of this on song at a time.
    Then do it this way.

  • IOS 7 music app does not display artist pictures and has incorrect album art after master reset.

Strange issue here. I did the update from iOS 6 to iOS 7, after I did the update, I noticed my synced music has just a random photo of the artist / group, that seems to be downloaded from the iTunes sites, because these pictures of the artist/group is not my album artwork.
I did a master reset on my device because I wanted to start from a clean slate, and set it up as a new phone. I went through and adjusted all of my settings and synced my music back on via iTunes, now its not showing these pictures any longer, infact, the strangest issue of them all.. is now when I view artists, the album that I synced now has a complete different album artwork picture that is not related to that album.
I am at a loss, my iTunes is extremely organized, I have everything configured to be 100% accurate for track names, artist, album, and album artwork.
Anyone have any input here? It only screwed up after the reset I did. This has to be a bug or something.

SiMooew469: Thank you!  After countless wasted hours messing with this, your solution was the only one that worked!  After setting up a few phones "as new" I noticed all the artist images would appear (for those that have one) even with my Match turned on.  I could not duplicate it on my restored-from-backup iPhone5S, as I would get a mix of the images and album art, even for those artists that have profile photos on the as-new setups.  I couldn't afford to lose all my text messages, etc. that come with restoring a phone as-new, so I tried about everything else under the sun: I tried logging in-and-out of my Apple ID, toggling Match on-and-off, I even deleted iTunes_control folder using iExplorer on a Windows machine.  Nothing worked.
    Here's what finally did:
If you don't have it set this way already, toggle "Group By Album Artist" in Settings->Music. For some reason that makes a difference for some artists in your library that appear when album artist is set to "Various Artists" or something other than the track's artist.  Logout of your Apple ID.  Log in with any other Apple ID.  Open the Music app and watch all the artist images load in the Artisits tab.  Once it is done, logout of the other Apple ID and login with your regular Apple ID.  Finally, all the artist images will remain.  Those artists that do not have a profile photo with iTunes will still show album art, which is by design.  Hopefully Apple will keep updating that database.
Incidentally, it's a bit odd that those profile photos don't appear in the Artists view in iTunes 11...or am I the only one?

  • HT1947 If you add music VIDEOS to Up Next playlist, then go to look at the album cover playing screen, then go to add another song from diff playlist, no longer can see Up Next, just go to full screen mode button. Using remote app iphone 5 to play out of

If you add music videos to Up Next playlist, then go to look at the album cover playing screen, then go to add another song from different playlist, you no longer can see Up Next, just go to full screen mode button. Using remote app iPhone 5 to play out of iTunes. It looks like it works fine for regular music, but for music videos you can't see your up next unless you go back on the computer to change once you've left the screen. When using the remote app, you shouldn't need to go to iTunes on the PC to view or edit Up Next already added. See first image, you can hit upper right and get back to Up Next (second image). Third image is music video, where you can't get back to Up Next, just swap between full screen and not. I hoped 3.0.1 would have the answer, no luck!

Add the ability to randomly select a new background from a pre selected group of photos every time the player is turned on or each day.
I would love that feature. I can't stand useing my computer with a single wall paper anymore (I have 500 anime pics that i rotate between every 2 mins ) If you could make the vision rotate background every x minutes or every time the player is turned on, it would be totally amazeningly sweet!!!! (i might have to go out and buy one then :P)
I just hope that creative has better firmware support with the vision than they have had with the touch.
    Once again, great review

  • Hi, I've lost all song data ( besides song name) on 1,100 WAV files. Does anyone know an app or fix that can identify Album & Artist (& maybe album art) on these files? Thanks

Hi, I've lost all song data ( besides song name) on 1,100 WAV files. Does anyone know an app or fix that can identify Album & Artist (& maybe album art) on these files? Thanks
    Dermot

    Hi John,
A major drawback with using wav for storage is that it doesn't carry a tag. This means that in the event of a corrupted library the only information remaining is the filename. Other data may be stored in the path but iTunes doesn't know how to get it. I understand that you need this format for your workflow with Diamond Cut, but that makes it all the more important that you backup your iTunes database on a regular basis.
Provided that you still have the tracks in their artist and album folders and haven't let iTunes "reorganise" them you should be able to restore some useful metadata using my script TagFromFilename. The script reads the path and filename, and provided these are in the normal layout of <Path>\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> can restore Artist, Album Artist, Track Name and Track Number. If your files have a different but predicatable layout with the same information, e.g. the data is all in the filename, then I could create a suitable version of the script to get the data into iTunes. I recommend you disable both the Keep... and Copy... options in iTunes advanced preferences before adding files to the iTunes database. Ideally you also want a complete backup of your correctly structured folders in case you need to pull copies back from it.
As stated earlier, uninstalling iTunes before the upgrade wouldn't have helped. The crucial thing before any upgrade is to backup all user data from the drive that will be wiped. Typically the iTunes database lives in C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes on Vista or Windows 7. The crucial file is called iTunes Library.itl. You seem fairly certain that you don't have a backup database that you could restore but an exhaustive search of your hard drive for files of the form *.itl might still be worth doing. If you find any apart from the active library we can discuss how you open them to see if they are useful.

PS The entire message in bold thing is a bit "shouty".

  • Remote app on iPad2 not showing iTunes interface on ATV2 shared library

I have an AppleTV 2 that's sharing an iTunes library via home sharing over Ethernet from a Mac Mini. Running Remote App on my iPhone 5S, I can control that library as expected. Running Remote App on my iPad2, however, I'm unable to see the main iTunes-like interface that lists songs, albums, artists, etc. on the shared library. While I can see the currently playing song at the top of the screen and have access to the Back, Pause, and Forward buttons, the main pane below that only shows the icons for Home Sharing and Using Gestures. Under Home Sharing, where it says "Tap the Apple TV button in the bottom left...," there's not Apple TV button, only "Devices." I can use the gestures interface in Remote App on the iPad2 to control playback, but I never see the main library interface. Any thoughts you have for remedying this would be really appreciated!

Well the response I got to the above post was outstanding!
Shall we put this in the bracket along with "If a tree falls in the forest with no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?"
If anyone is wondering, for my party I ended up using my Mac as the server for the iTunes DJ. And I discovered that if more than 5-7 people try to get onto it, it crashes the whole system and the music stops. Glorious.

I know this is an old question, but I had the same problem and found the solution somewhere else and thought I'd post it here as this thread comes up when googling for the answer.
It appears as though any songs without an "Album" don't appear. In iTunes select all songs without an album, right click and select "Get Info" and give them an Album name (e.g. "Unknown" or "Singles"). This might also apply to songs without other tags.
