Remote base station versus relay base station

Okay, I give up. What is the difference between a remote and a relay? Can I daisy chain relay base stations? Will remote base stations act as "relays"? Are there any tricks to setting up the relay stations (remotes seem completely straightforward)? What are the positives and negatives of each?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It seems like the distinction is more important if you want a wired connection to the station. If you're just tring to create a robust wireless network, can you do many remotes but just one relay? It seems like relay would be the way to go if there was no limitation on how many.

  • Adding remote/relay base stations

    hello,
re network with AEBSn's and Airport Express's
is it possible to add more than 4 remotes to a network? In Airport Utility under the WDS page (participate in a network), it only seems to allow 4 remotes added when setting up the main base station.
can remotes be connected both by WDS and ethernet cable?
are relay stations required to be connected by ethernet cable or can they be WDS as well?
when setting up a relay base station, should the station also be listed as a remote under the main station?
finally, when do I use 'Participate' vs. 'Extend' a network under the wireless tab in Airport Utility?
I've read the article "Designing Airport Networks" and can't find clear answers to the above.
also, I do understand band width will suffer with multiple base stations
    any help appreciated.
    kind regards, Scott.

Yes, but indirectly. You can only add four remotes or four relays (with up to four remotes attached to the relay) to a main base station ... for a total of twenty-one base stations in a WDS.
can remotes be connected both by WDS and ethernet cable?
If a base station is connected by Ethernet, it is no longer participating in a WDS.
are relay stations required to be connected by ethernet cable or can they be WDS as well?
    They would be wireless.
finally, when do I use 'Participate' vs. 'Extend' a network under the wireless tab in Airport Utility?
Use "Participate" when you are creating a WDS; use "Extend" when you want to extend a 802.11n network wirelessly with an additional 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).

  • Wired network in office not seen from relay base station side

After a number of false starts I have a wireless set-up between my office and a remote location. All five Macs in the office are wired to a router which is wired to the cable modem. The Airport base station in the office is connected with the the WAN port to the router. Base station is set up as a WDS.
The remote base station is set up as a relay base station and WDS and we go wireless between it and the Mac at that location.
While I have a fast internet connection from the remote location, I expected to see the 5 Macs in the office and be able to connect to them. I don't.
What settings must I play with to be able to connect to Macs in the office? I might note that I don't see the remote computer from the office either. So the problem is both ways.

  • RELAY BASE STATION

    1) Should I have Airport EXTREME or EXPRESS connected to the modem, then use an additional Airport EXTREME or EXPRESS as relay base station? Could either Airport EXTREME or EXPRESS be a relay base station?
    2) If I’m correct, the base station (connected to the modem), will connect to the RELAY BASE STATION which could additionally connect to other airports/ PC within its RANGE.
    3) Which Airport is best to use as relay base?
    Many thanks

    1) Should I have Airport EXTREME or EXPRESS connected to the modem, then use an additional Airport EXTREME or EXPRESS as relay base station? Could either Airport EXTREME or EXPRESS be a relay base station?
You could have either connected to the modem. Either can be a relay base station.
    2) If I’m correct, the base station (connected to the modem), will connect to the RELAY BASE STATION which could additionally connect to other airports/ PC within its RANGE.
    That is correct.
    3) Which Airport is best to use as relay base?
Depends on what you consider most important. If cost is, then the AirPort Express would be the best option.

  • WDS remote 10x faster than WDS base?

I have a Time Capsule (802.11n) set up as a WDS base, and an Airport Express (802.11g).
    The setup is as follows:
DSL ]====[ Time Capsule )))((( Airport Express
My DSL modem serves as the router and DHCP host. Both the Time Capsule and the Airport Express are in bridge mode.
Now, if I hop on the wireless network with my PowerBook, I get downloads in the 500kbps range when it's going through the Time Capsule (looking at connected devices in Airport Utility). But I get upwards of 5000kbps when it goes through the Airport Express. What gives? Why would the Time Capsule, even running in compatibility mode, be an order of magnitude slower?

"1. Should I have set the AEX up as a WDS remote or a WDS relay? Which is the correct setting for what I am trying to do? Does it matter?"
It was correct to set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a Remote Base Station in the WDS. A Relay would be used between a Main and Remote to extend the wireless even farther. Typically, a Relay wouldn't have wireless clients.
"2. Secondly, with my AEX set up as a WDS remote, I see two networks with the exact same name as my AEBSn (main base station) according to istumbler. The AEBSn shows as 49%, while the AEX shows as 60%. But since they both have the exact same network name, which connection is my wireless client (macbook) receiving? The 49% or the 60%? I can't tell."
That's correct, because with the WDS you extended your original wireless network. To which base station your MacBook will connect to would be the one providing the stronger signal. Most likely the one it's closest to.

  • Configuring remote AX connected to relay AX

I am having problems connecting a remote base station to a relay base station. The relay base station seems to work as i see it in airport utility but - although it sees the remote base station connected to it (i can see it in wireless client chart) - the remote base station does not show up in airport utility. however, when i move near the remote base station, it seems to be set up correctly.
Does the remote base station need to have the address of the WDS main base station or of the relay base station in the WDS settings?
Do i need to add the remote to the list of wds clients of the main base station?

Okay so after a lot of reading on these discussion posts and the Internet, I have resolved my issue.
Like jdam, I have a Time Capsule connected to my Internet Cable Modem.  My new home has speakers in every room so I wanted to stream via AirPlay from my iMac, MacBook Air, iPhone or iPad.  My Sony receiver will not play to Zone B using a digital signal from the AppleTv HDMI, so I purchased the AirPort Express so I could connect the mini audio port the the receiver.
When I used the AirPort configuration utility, it assumed I wanted to extend my current network on my Time Capsule.  This article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4587?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US states that "due to the overhead required for this configuration, you may expect AirPlay drop-outs such as intermittent loss of audio". Therefore the solution is to configure the AirPort Express to be a client of the Time Machine, not extend the wireless network.
In the same article it states, "AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network."
In the AirPort Utility select the Wireless tab and change the Network Mode from "Extend a wireless network" to "Join a wirelss network".
After the AirPort Express comes back online, I tested streaming from all of my devices and I no longer had stutter or drop outs when playing music.
I know jdam stated he had "Join a wireless network" selected but I also thought this is what the default setup did.

  • Data type of the base attribute or the base value does not match...

    Hello all,
    I always get the Error

The English message must be something like this:
The data type of the base attribute or the base value does not match the assigned expression.
when I run my mapping. The attribute REGISTRATIONS is NUMERIC (12,2) in the Cube and I map a NUMERIC(12,2) constant in it.
I use a simple OWB-Mapping for loading, but I don't understand why it doesn't function. Other mappings where the attributes are out of a
table I put in a cube are running well.
I tried different things, but nothing fixed my problem. Any idea ?
    Thanks a lot for help
    Michael

Technically this is a 'warning' from the server, not an 'error'. This means that the change you made should have been submitted, but you get an warning message on the client. AWM would suppress this warning, but evidently OWB does not. Can you switch to use AWM?
Here is the definition of the warning along with 'cause' and 'action' sections. (Unfortunately these sections are not translated into German for some reason.)
    >
02517, 0, "The data type \"%(1)s\" of the base attribute or base measure is different from the mapped expression \"%(2)s\"."
// *Cause: Either the base attribute or base measure with the mapped expression was set to an inconsistent data type, or it was mapped to an expression of a different data type from its fixed data type.
// *Action: When changing a mapped expression for a base attribute or base measure, ensure that the expression has the same data type; otherwise, set the data type of the base attribute or base measure to NULL first. When a base attribute or a base measure has an existing mapped expression, do not set it to a different data type.
    >
It is probably safe to ignore this warning, but if you can post the relevant XML for the cube, then will probably be able to spot the problem. I assume that REGISTRATIONS is a measure in the cube CUB_REGISTRATIONS_AW, so this is what you can look for in the XML:
    (1) The definition of the base measure along with the datatype. It should be something like this
    <Measure>
      <BaseMeasure
        SQLDataType="NUMBER(12,2)"
        ETMeasureColumnName="REGISTRATIONS"
Name="REGISTRATIONS">(2) The mapping info for the measure, which should looks something like this:
    <MeasureMap
      Name="REGISTRATIONS"
      Expression="...">
      <Measure Name="REGISTRATIONS"/>
</MeasureMap>I don't know if you can get the XML directly from OWB. If not, then DBMS_CUBE.EXPORT_XML should work (assuming you are in 11.2). You could also attach AWM and save the cube to an XML template.

my ipod nano 7th generation....works fine as long as it's on the docking station. when off the station, the display goes dark after a few seconds. it's fully charged. please help. this is the heartbeat of my business. thanks

In the worst case, it's still under warranty (all 7th gen nanos are still under one year from purchase).
So, you disconnect it from power, and it almost immediately goes dead?  You can try a Restore... but it doesn't sound like the type of problem a Restore will fix.
You should probably have it looked by Apple Tech Support.  If there's an Apple Store nearby, you can take it to the store's Genius Bar.  To avoid waiting, you can make a reservation at the store's web page

  • How do I delete a radio station stream from "My Stations" in iTunes 11.1 for the Mac?

So far in iTunes Radio I have 3 personalized radio stations set up. I want to get rid of one of them. How to do? This is on my Mac and not iOS.

    Hello, macpro3000.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Deleting a station in iTunes Radio is similar to deleting other iTunes media.  To delete a station, click the desired station, then press delete on your keyboard. You can also delete multiple stations by clicking and dragging your cursor over multiple stations. Once you've selected the desired stations, press delete on your keyboard.

Sounds like a problem for forums/support from the DB provider, as this problem is normally solved through some form of HA provided by the DB (or some cluster software, but still not Java) with, normally, a shared (virtual) IP address.

  • ABAP base PI sheet & Browser base PI sheet

    Hi
What is the differance between Browser base PI sheet & ABAP base PI sheet.

    Hi,
Pls. find the details about ABAP based PI sheet & Browser based PI sheet as below so you can understand the difference between them :
    ABAP List-Based PI Sheet
    Definition
The PI sheet represents the result of a control recipe that was sent to a process operator and whose content is displayed as text on the screen. This means the PI sheet is an instruction for the process operator that describes how and in which order a product is manufactured. The PI sheet can, for example, contain information about the picking of raw materials as well as instructions about charging the mixer, filling silos, and so on.
The SAP PI sheet is designed for processing on the screen, which means that the process operator should enter, confirm, report, or complete data interactively. In this way, the SAP PI sheet enables communication between the SAP System (PP-PI) and process operators in production lines that are operated manually (either fully or partially).
Beside this conventional PI sheet, you can also create a browser-based PI sheet as of Release 4.6C. It has all the advantages of a browser-based application that is easy-to-operate and intuitive.
    Use
Depending on the process instructions contained in a control recipe, the PI sheet supports the following functions:
    ·        Displaying control information such as instructions for the process operator on how to carry out production steps
    ·        Displaying additional notes, such as notes on specific rules that must be followed when dealing with dangerous goods
    ·        Recording of actual process data
    ·        Reporting of entered and calculated values using process messages, for example, posting goods issues and receipts or time-ticket confirmations
    ·        Navigating to other SAP applications outside of PP-PI to make entries and afterwards return to the PI sheet
    ·        Performing calculations, such as calculating dates
    ·        Triggering a dialog or requesting data from internal or external applications
For information about defining PI sheets using process instructions see Process Instructions for the PI Sheet. For ABAP list-based PI sheets you can use process instructions of the types 1, 2 and 4 to 7.
    Structure
Each PI sheet consists of a header and a number of elements defined via the process instructions in the control recipe or by the process operator when he or she maintains the PI sheet.
    These elements include:
    ·        Control information and notes with additional information for the process operator
    ·        Comments by the process operator
    ·        Input fields for the actual process data to be reported
    ·        Fields for values to be calculated by the system
    ·        Pushbuttons that enable the process operator to call user-defined function modules or the QM function for recording inspection results
The data contained in the PI sheet is displayed on an overview screen and various detail screens for the individual elements.
The following paragraphs provide details on the individual elements and their functions within the PI sheet.
For information on how to define PI sheets using process instructions, see Process Instructions for PI Sheets.
The PI sheet is made up of the following sections:
    The Header
The header is shown at the very top of a PI sheet's overview screen. It contains information on the following:
    ·        The status of the PI sheet
    ·        The process order for which the PI sheet was created
    ·        The material to be produced
    ·        The process operator or group of process operators responsible for maintaining the PI sheet
    The Phases
The lower section of the PI sheet comprises the phases. Depending on the content of the process instructions, they can contain the following information:
    ·        Control information
Control information for the process operator is displayed on the overview screen of the PI sheet. The information to be displayed is defined in a process instruction of the type u201Cprocess parameteru201D. In the PI sheet, the number of the process instruction and the corresponding phase of the process order is displayed before the control information.
    ·        Additional information
Additional information on a process step can be displayed on detail screens within the PI sheet. The information to be displayed is defined as a note in a process instruction of the type u201Cprocess parameteru201D.
On the overview screen of the PI sheet, one or more pushbuttons are displayed below the corresponding control instruction. You can use these pushbuttons to call up the information on the detail screens.
    ·        Comments
Within the PI sheet, the process operator can create comments on individual process steps. These comments can either be saved in a special comment sheet within the PI sheet, or they can be reported to process management using a process message.
The comment sheet can be accessed from the PI sheet's overview screen by choosing the corresponding menu option or the corresponding pushbutton in the header.
Comment messages always refer to a specific process step. If a comment message has been created in the PI sheet, the document symbol as well as the beginning of the comment are displayed to the right of the corresponding control information. You can display the entire comment on a detail screen.
    ·        Input values
On the overview screen of the PI sheet, input fields are provided for the actual process data to be reported. The values to be reported are defined in process instructions of the type u201Cprocess data requestu201D.
Single input fields are displayed to the right of the preceding control instruction. If several values of the same type are to be reported, a corresponding table is displayed below the control instruction and the other input fields.
    ·        Signature
A signature is a special type of input value that marks the end of a process step within the PI sheet. By executing a signature, you confirm and report the data entered or calculated in the process step. If you have made the corresponding system settings, you must execute a signature with a password or a digital signature.
Like any other input value, the signature is defined in a process instruction of the type u201Cprocess data requestu201D.
    ·        Values to be calculated
If you want the system to calculate a value in the PI sheet, a field for this value is displayed on the overview screen to the right of the preceding control instruction. If the value has not yet been calculated, the field contains a question mark (?). Values to be calculated are defined in process instructions of the type u201Cprocess data calculation formulau201D.
    ·        Inspection results
If inspection results are to be recorded for an operation or phase, the Record inspection results pushbutton is displayed in the PI sheet to the right of the preceding control instruction. Using this pushbutton, you can branch to the QM function for recording inspection results.
The operations or phases for which inspection results are to be recorded are defined using a process instruction of the type u201Cinspection results requestu201D.
    ·        Dynamic function calls
If an SAP function module is to be called within the PI sheet (for example, to access order confirmation or material quantity calculation, or to start a user-defined function), a pushbutton with which you can start the function is displayed to the right of the preceding control instruction.
The function to be called is defined using a process instruction of the type u201Cdynamic function callu201D.
    Integration
To create ABAP list-based PI sheets, you must send your control recipes to a control recipe destination of type1 : control recipe transfer to SAP PI sheet.
    Browser-Based PI Sheet
    Definition
As of Release 4.6C, you can also create PI sheets in HTML layout. The browser-based PI sheet is an enhanced version of the ABAP list-based PI sheet. It offers a new user interface that is intuitive and easy-to-operate.
To be able to use the browser-based PI sheet correctly, you must install Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5 or greater) and make a few security settings in the Internet Explorer. For more information, see Setting Up the Browser for PI Sheets and Cockpits.
In this way, the PI sheet enables communication between the SAP System and process operators in production lines that are operated manually (either fully or partially).
    Use
Depending on the characteristic-based process instructions or XSteps contained in a control recipe, the PI sheet supports the following functions:
For further information on defining PI sheets using characteristic-based process instructions or XSteps see:
    ·        Characteristic-Based Process Instructions for PI Sheets
    ·        XSteps (Execution Steps)
When creating browser-based PI sheets, you can either use the standard layout defined by SAP or use your own layouts. For more information, see Layout Definition for PI Sheets and Cockpits.
    Structure
    The SAP Standard Layout
The following sections show you how the browser-based PI sheet is structured in the SAP standard layout and how the interface elements are displayed.
The browser-based PI sheets comprises a header and the individual phases of the process order. The header and all phases are open when you call the PI sheet and can be collapsed and expanded.
All functions are available in the context menu. In addition, a menu bar in the PI sheet header contains the functions that refer to the entire PI sheet. To display the context menu, you position the cursor on the corresponding field and use the right-hand mouse button. You can call the context menu using key combination Shift + F10.
    The Header
The header is shown at the top of the PI sheet. It contains detailed information about the PI sheet that can be either hidden or displayed. If you click on the header, then detailed information about the header is displayed. The header contains information about:
    ·        The status of the PI sheet (test or active PI sheet)
    ·        Process order for which the PI sheet was created
    ·        The material to be produced
    ·        The batch to be produced if the material you want to produce is subject to batch management
    ·        The number of the control recipe from which the PI sheet was created
    ·        The number of the inspection lot if a QM inspection has been defined for the process order
    The Phases
The lower section of the PI sheet comprises the phases of the process order. Each phase can be subdivided into several segments. Each time a long text is contained within a phase, a new segment is started, which is completed before the next long text.
Phases can contain the following elements:
    ·        Control information, notes, and input fields for long texts that are displayed on the left-hand side
    ·        All input fields, output fields, and pushbuttons that are displayed on the right-hand side.
    ·        Tables that are displayed over the entire PI sheet screen.
