Remote can't find iTunes on mix wired/wireless network

I am trying to control music from a iMac running iTunes using the iPhone Remote app. I've previously done this successfully with a wireless only network (using the Airport Express wifi to join my existing wifi network etc).
However, since introducing D-Link Homeplugs into my network, I am unable to 'see' the iTunes library from the Remote app when I connect wirelessly to the airport express.
My hardware is configured as follows:-
*Netgear Router (wireless disabled) -> Homeplug power network -> iMac running iTunes*
And elsewhere on the Homeplug network, I have:
H*omeplug power network -> Airport Express [set up as wireless access point]*.
If I connect the Express to the iTunes machine directly - leaving the wireless access details the same - it all works fine. If I move the Airport Express and reconnect over the Homeplug network, the Remote fails to 'see' the library, although I can still send music over the network (using the iTunes interface on the iMac) to the remote speakers.
My network uses the router as a DHCP (range 192.168.0.x mask 255.255.255.0), Airport Express is connected to Homeplug ethernet with a static IP (in the same range) and provides wireless access (unsecured for now while i get this working). The iMac has a static IP (in the same range). If I swap the iMac for a PC (XP - using DHCP from the router for IP), I get the same result. If I use an iPhone network application to view the network (connected by the wifi access point on the AX) then I can see all the machines on my network as I would expect.
To reiterate, if I cable this network directly (either AX->iMac or AX->hub->iMac) then it works. As soon as I go AX->Homeplug power network->iMac then the Remote app loses sight of the library.
I wouldn't expect any firewall on the wired->wireless networks on my router (a Sky branded Netgear 934g). I also didn't think that the Homeplugs would block.
So does anyone have any ideas why the Remote application loses sight of my iTunes library when connecting via Airport Express cabled into a Homeplug ethernet network ?
Thanks for any help because I miss my music
cheers,
Tim

  • Remote can't find iTunes library

I am running iTunes 10.5.1 on windows xp3 with a netcomm nb9wmaxxn. I have a wired LAN as well as using the wireless.
    I have remote 2.2.
I have 2 computers connected to the LAN. Neither can connect to my iPhone using home sharing, but when I try to connect the other way iTunes finds my device and asks for a passcode. This it accepts and tells me I can use it but my iPhone cannot find the library.
Despite this I know my iPhone can connect to iTunes as it updates app purchases OTA.
The other confusing issue is that my third computer is a small net book and connects to network via WAN. This computer can connect to Remote on my iPhone no problem n
I am at a loss now. I have been through as many posts as I can and have tried most suggestions relating to firewalls etc but nothing seems to work.
    Any ideas anyone?

I am having the same problem with multiple routers and can't help thinking that something has either been changed universally in the firmware of all contemporary routers (except perhaps apple routers?), or Apple has screwed something up in the Remote App / iOS.
    My experience:
    1. 2008 vintage DLink DIR-655 router (with old firmware)... works perfectly. Unfortunately this router's internet connection has failed, so I am trying to replace it. I can only use it as a LAN router.
    2. I purchase both DLink DIR-825 and a new DIR-655 (with new firmware)... with both of these routers my iPhone can wirelessly access the internet, but not the LAN. Remote doesn't work.
    3. I learn that some of my other devices also have problems with LAN access. computers and laptops are ok, but my smart TV, andriod tablet, iphone don't work.
    4. Using my airport express as wireless access point fixes the LAN access issue for these devices BUT remote app still doesn't work.  I see the same behaviour you have described.
    5. I get a new CISCO wireless modem from my ISP... the WAN and LAN seem to work, but remote app still doesn't work. Same "Can't find" behaviour after entering the 4 digit code.
I will try to call Apple tech support in the next week or so when I have time!

  • Home Sharing- Remote can't find iTunes 11

    My problem-
The Remote app from Apple can't find my iTunes library, and the one version of iTunes that does function with the Remote
isn't compatible with the iPhone 5. I've tried the current version of iTunes, as well as three previous versions. I've also
tried 3 different iDevices, each with a different version of iOS 6. Details are below, and I'm stumped. Help is appreciated.
    The setup:
    Apps
    -Remote app v3.0.1 (599.20) on
    Sprint iPhone 4S 16gb, iOS 6.0, and
    Verizon iPhone 5 16gb, iOS 6.1.2, and
    Wifi-only iPad 3 64gb, iOS 6.0.1, model MD330LL
    iTunes versions:
    9.2.1.5
-iPhone 4S appears under Devices in the sidebar, and prompts for the 4 digit code. Entering this code any number of times,
as well as having the remote app generate multiple codes, results in a timed-out attempt. iTunes says "Verifying Remote
passcode," and the gray/white statusbar moves for maybe 30 seconds, but all I get is the Windows default notification
    tone.
-iPhone 5 does the same thing
-iPad 3 has no trouble pairing with iTunes, but the app cannot actually connect to the Library. The app displays "Connecting
to [my user name]'s Library..." and the segmented circle spins. Maybe 30 seconds later, a pop up says "Remote can't connect
to your iTunes library. Check your network settings and try again."
    10.3.1.55
-iPhone 4S 1st attempt was taking several minutes, compared to the other two devices which connected instantly. The 2nd attempt
    behaved similarly.
-iPhone 5 immediately connects and controls successfully. After I  "Forget all remotes" in preferences for iPad 3, iPhone 5 connects
    immediately/successfully after iPad connects.
-iPad 3 at first doesn't connect (iTunes times out). After I "Forget all remotes" in preferences, iPad connects
    10.7.0.21
-Even with signing in, authorizing the computer, and turning on Home Sharing, the Devices category doesn't appear in the sidebar
when I choose "Add an iTunes Library" from the Remote app's settings menu. This is how I've previously attempted to add remotes, and this
is the 1st time it hasn't worked.
    11.0.1.12
    - Remote app doesn't find/discover iTunes
-The Devices category appears for the iPad 3, but only in a synching capacity. There's no option for the 4 digit code, and none of the
other iDevices appear in the sidebar.
    11.0.2.26
    - Remote app doesn't find/discover iTunes
-The Devices category appears for the iPad 3, but only in a synching capacity. There's no option for the 4 digit code, and none of the
other iDevices appear in the sidebar.
    Computer
    -Windows 7 Professional 64bit
    -Intel i7 3770 3.4 GHz
    -16gb RAM
    -Plenty of HDD space
    Internet
-PC wired to Linksys WRT160N router
-iPhones, iPad connected to router via Wifi
-I didn't configure any firewall in Windows or my router, although I guess that doesn't mean there isn't one
    Notes
-I install all programs to a D:\ drive, with my C:\ reserved exclusively for the OS. The iTunes installation and music library
    are both on this drive
-The app has no trouble seeing/controlling my 3rd-gen Apple TV, connected via ethernet to the Linsys router

Here is the solution that worked for me :
Connect your iPad (iphone) to your computer with your cable. Open itune, when you see your iPad in the device list on the left column, open remote on your iPad. Your library will be there. Then you can unplug everything. Since you have connected with your library once (over the cable) it will be remembered in your remote app and you will be able to use it over wifi.
    Hope this will help!

  • Connecting AX to mixed wired/wireless network

I've got a networking issue that I can't seem to solve and could use some help. I have a old house that, while not terribly large, has very thick, radio opaque walls.
I use a cable modem connected to an Airport Extreme which creates a wireless network within the house (which I extend around the house with a couple of Airport Expresses). I also have two computers wired via some VERY long CAT5e ethernet cables to the same Airport Extreme - a MacMini in my kitchen and a MacPro in my office (which is detached, across the yard from the main house). Right now I also use an Airport Express in my office to extend my wireless network for my clients who come to the office with laptops, etc. and also for my iPad. But the wireless signal is so weak out in the office that even with the Airport Express repeating it, it's very slow and spotty.
So, I bought an Ethernet switch, thinking I could split the Ethernet coming into the office and run one directly into the MacPro and the other into the Airport Express. I figure it's not hard to configure the Airport Express to create a NEW wireless network with the data coming in via Ethernet. However, what I want to do is create a node on my EXISTING wireless network (so my devices can see each other), just using data coming from the ethernet port instead of repeating the weak wireless signal that's reaching the office from the house. Is this possible? If so, how do I do this?
By the way, I have both old (G) AX's and well as a couple of new (N) ones. Right now the new ones are in the house and an old one is in the office, but I could move things around if it made things work.
    Thank you.

    Hey Bob,
I set up the Airport Express as you described and, while it worked at first, I'm running into some difficulties. Basically, the AX unit tends to disappear from the network after about an hour. It's very strange because, like I said, it works at first and I have great signal out in the office then... poof!... it's gone. And it doesn't just disappear from the wireless network. Both my MacPro and MacMini (which are connected via ethernet) can't see it either. I have to unplug/replug the unit to get it to show up again.
I thought it might be the particular unit. But I've tried two AX (G) units and my old AirPort Extreme (G) UFO shaped router all in the same bridge configuration and they exhibit the same behavior -- working at first then dropping off the network and requiring a reboot to reappear.
Do you have any thoughts? I'd be most grateful.

  • I am trying to update iTunes on my IMB Thinkpad laptop...keep getting a message that itunes can't find iTunes.msi

I installed iTunes a couple of years ago....have lots of songs, purchase more all the time....and run an i phone, i pad and i pod....I use the ipod for music only.  Trying to update the iTunes, which it asks me to do when I open up iTunes on my laptop....I go to update, and it can't get all the way thru....stops and gives me that message saying it can't find iTunes.msi or something about the pathway to it...how do I fix that?

    Hello Rneufeld,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with iTunes.  I recommend trying to download the update directly from our site.
You can download the latest version of iTunes here:
    Download iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you are still not able to install the update, I recommend using the steps in this article and selecting iTunes in step 8:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" alert when removing Apple software in Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3704
Once you have it removed, try installing iTunes again using the link above.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.
Also see here as to moving your music to your new computer -

  • I am trying to download the latest version of iTunes to my PC (windows XP) and I keep getting an error message or two. One is that it can't uninstall the previous itunes version, the other is that it can't find itunes.msi.

I am trying to download the latest version of iTunes to my PC (windows XP) and I keep getting an error message or two. One is that it can't uninstall the previous itunes version, the other is that it can't find itunes.msi. I have tried removing  the old version in add/remove programs, but it says the same error. I tried deleting every thing that has itunes in the file/folder/etc and it didn't help.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Where Can I Find iTunes 10.1 (or slightly higher) To Download??

Where can I find iTunes 10.1 (or slighter higher) to download?
    I have a G4 iMac running 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.2
I have got a iPhone 3g which requires iTunes 10.1 or greater to be able to sync.
I cannot d/l the latest iTunes as it requires OS10.5 and my system will only support up to OS10.4.11
So I need a version  of iTunes 10.1 which hopefully will work with 10.4.11
    Many thanks.....

You won't. Tiger will only run iTunes 9.2.1 or lower.  You will need to upgrade your operating system to Leopard or higher to run iTunes 10.
I am not sure about your system only supporting up to Tiger  -- I've seen reports about people running Leopard on even the oldest G4 Macs.  To get more information about your computer, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).

I tried downloading iTunes to my computer. It gives me an error where it says can not find iTunes Helper. I uninstalled all iTunes, restarted my computer, and then tried again. I keep getting the same error everyime. What can I do?

Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes.  Please uninstall iTunes,  then install iTunes again.  Error 2 (Windows error 2).
Many thanks. That issue will be causing the iTuneshelper error message too.
With the Error 2, let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR suitable for your PC (there's a 32-bit Windows version and a 64-bit Windows version). If the following link takes you to the WinRAR home page rather than the WinRAR downloads page, click the Downloads header in the box at the left of the WinRAR home page to see the trial version downloads:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you? If so, see if iTunes will launch without the error now.
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

How can I find iTunes 10.1 for windows.  I don't want the cloud, and my iPod touch won't go back to prior versions.

Had the same problem. Also worked fine on my MacBook, but not on my new iMac. Here's what I did to fix it:
Archive and Reinstall Mac OS (takes about 40 minutes). This reverted my system back to 10.6.2. Just pop in your Mac OS disc that came with your computer. Mine had 10.6.2 on it, and "Archive and Install" is the default option. When it's done, run software update and update everything. Now it all works fine.
Somewhere along the way, some file got corrupted somehow. But doing an "archive and install" of your OS undoes whatever file damage was incurred, and allows everything to update normally via Software Update as it should.
