Remote Desktop - Included w/Xserve

Hello Everyone,
Probably a very simple question. Is Remote Desktop included with Xserves running 10.6?
I have an Xserve in the server room running 10.6 and need to connect to it from my Mac in my office. My Mac is running 10.6 client.
Do I have to buy Remote Desktop or is it included? How do I get this going?

To clarify what Tony has pointed to, if you're not familiar with Apple-speak...
[Download|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/server admintools1062.html] and install the Server Admin tools on the Mac OS X client, and [get the LOM configured|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2773] on the Xserve box.
Then, as Tony states, launch Server Admin, enter the host and password, and share the Xserve server screen. You can do that via the VNC path Tony mentions, or (once you have Screen Sharing launched from Server Admin) you can control-click on the Screen Sharing icon, select Options, and select "Keep in Dock" to easily give yourself a short-cut to the tool.

XServe 10.4.7 + Remote Desktop 2.2

I am trying to remote to the xserve using an Imac with remote desktop 2.2. I am able to use the control feature from the Remote desktop program, to get on the server, however it asks for permissions to log on. When I shut down the server, I have go to the server and log on to get control or access the Xserve, through Remote Desktop program.
Any suggestions of what I need to check so I can log in and shut down the server from another machine, using the Remote Desktop program?

How did you acquire the 10.4.7 update, Edgar? Did you use Software Update or download from the Apple website yourself?
I put 10.4.7 on a 17" 2.1GHz MacBookPro a couple of days ago and that was fine. You might think about downloading (again, I know, tedious) the combo update for the Intel equipped Macs and installing that.
Of course, I presume that the machine was in A1 order before you installed; and that after the reinstall up to 10.4.6 that you have checked the disk and installation?

I think I've found the answer to my question. I had to download the remote client from Microsoft to access the Windows Server VM.

Been watching HD TV shows on Apple TV for a month with my 1080i TV. Tonight getting error on TV, "This content requires HDCP for playback". All other media from remote desktop working OK, including 720p movie. WI-FI network running normal. Help?

Howto access with Remote Desktop a Xserve with firewall service on

Hello,
When I activate the firewall service of a Xserve running the OSX Server (10.4.11), I cannot anymore connect to the Xserver with Apple Remote Desktop. I opened different ports which seemed to be related with ARD but without success.
What should I do to allow the ARD access when firewall is running ?

Apple Remote Desktop Can't Connect to an Xserve running 10.5

I was upgrading an Xserve with dual G5 processors from OS-X serve10.4 to 10.5. I've got a keyboard and monitor plugged into the Xserve. Apple Remote Desktop v3.5 can't connect with the Xserve. File sharing on the server is checked to allow it. The ARD ports seem to be open on the server. .When ARD scans our network computers, the Xserve says Access Denied next to it. When I try to connect it says something like "Unable to Verify." Any ideas what the issue might be?

Well the File Sharing service would not have anything to do with remoting in. Have you checked Remote Managed and checked to see if the accounts listed with access have everything checked off?
Did the local admin password of the server change? Can you ping the server?

Accessing Xserve Desktop Out Of Network via VPN or Remote Desktop

Hi everyone,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to look at my question.
I'm trying to figure out how I would set up an Xserve so that it could operate on a work network while allowing users to access it away from work (at their houses) with a login and password that I've set up in the Xserve. That way they can access specific applications on the server.
I've searched through the forums and other documentation already with moderate success. Apparently I don't NEED a static IP address for my Xserve but it would make it easier. It seems that the most highly recommended solution is setting up a VPN.
So after some further research, I found that the VPN can be set up directly within the OSX server but I'm unclear on how to actually allow it to do what I'm trying to do. I don't want my external users to be able to have any admin rights -- I basically want them to remote desktop into a user account on the xserve with no ability to change any settings, but to access one application on it so they can run that application on the server.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I understand your request correctly, what you want cannot be done out of the box.
Despite Mac OS X Server's ability to support multiple users, it's still limited to one GUI environment/desktop. That means that there's only one set of GUI apps that can run at a time.
You could have multiple users log on using Remote Desktop, but they'd all see the exact same thing. In addition, actions (key presses, mouse movements, etc.) by any one user would be reflected on every other screen, so it's not practical to have multiple users trying to use the same GUI environment.
You need to more clearly define what it is you're trying to achieve. Why, for example, are you trying to run applications remotely over the internet, given the additional latency inherent in this kind of setup)? What do you expect to gain?
More importantly, what application(s) are you trying to run?
Some applications support remote processing (e.g. an application you run locally on your machine submits a job to the server for processing, based on the idea that the server is a more powerful machine).
Other apps support collaboration where multiple users can share the same data and updates are dynamically reflected on other clients.
There are some hacks that emulate multiple desktops, and they might work for you, but you need a better understanding of what you're trying to do.

Help, when connecting to xserve with remote desktop, lost menu bar

Here is my situation, I have an xserve running 10.5.5, this weekend the server rebooted itself and when it came back up LDAP was not running and had to be restarted. I fixed that problem but now whenever I connect to the server using remote desktop, the menu bar is missing and I cannot open any applications. The server is not located here and can not be rebooted unless absolutely necessary. Is there a way to fix this problem by SSH in the terminal? Sorry if this doesnt make too much sense I am relatively new to mac servers. Thanks in advance

I think your priorities should be first, to get the server on a decent & properly-rated UPS !
If it restarted (undesirably) for a reason other than a power outage/issue, that should get addressed promptly.
Since you have ssh access (hopefully very well secured), I'd suggest you run use diskutil to verify the system-volume as well as run a permissions repair, and then set aside the Preferences folder for your account (whichever one you try to use for ARD),
and you can kickstart the ARD client.

Have Remote Desktop 3.3 and trying to get to XServe network

I installed Apple Remote Desktop 3.3 on my MacBookPro with 10.6.2 and when I launch my VPN Client and Remote Desktop, nothing is showing up, yet on another laptop with 10.5.?, the ARD isn't 3.3 and everything comes up like a charm. Any ideas on how to get it to see the network from home?

Have you configured your ARD to look for the servers over the VPN?
By default ARD will show a list of pre-configured servers that you can manage. You can use the Scanner option to search out remote systems to manage but by default this only searches the local LAN. It won't look over the VPN for remote systems unless you've already added them to your managed servers list.
You can have ARD look over the VPN - just change the 'Local network' pop-up menu in the Scanner window and set 'Network Range, then enter the range of IP addresses across your VPN link.

Can I use Remote Desktop to run Windows software from my Mac

Here's what I want to do:
1) Set up a small office LAN with an Apple Xserve as the file server; clients are mostly iMacs but a few PCs.
2) There are one or two software apps I need that exist only in the Windows world (such as a good document comparison software like DeltaView).
3) I want to have one dedicated PC for my one or two essential Windows apps and then run Remote Desktop Connection on my Mac client to launch the Windows app on the PC client and use it to edit or otherwise manipulate a data file stored on the server.
Is this possible?

OK, maybe I'm missing something basic but then why would I ever want to run Windows network in my office? The bugbear about Macs is that there is certain Windows software for which there is no good Mac equivalent. But you are telling me that as long as I have a couple of Windows boxes, I can run my Windows software on them through my Mac, even though the data files are stored on an separate box (an Xserve).
Now, for the $64 question -- is it possible to set up a network in such a way that I could use RDC on my PowerBook in, say, Chicago to run the software installed on the Windows box and in turn to open and manipulate the files stored on the Xserve in my office, halfway across the world in Abu Dhabi? Would this be a particularly difficult configuration?

Cannot use Remote Desktop host on Windows 8.1 Pro, termsrv corrupted?

Few days ago I upgraded my home desktop machine from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Professional so I can use the Remote Desktop feature.
I enabled everything needed, checked "Allow computers to connect to this computer" from the Remote Settings, forwarded the port 3389 in my rounter and allowed it in my firewall etc...
But I still can't connect to this computer from outside my home network or inside it. The error I get trying to connect is this:

Since it's the first time I use this tool I'm not familiar with this log file, but what I managed to figure out from it is that termsrv.dll is corrupted and windows cannot repair it for some reason.
My question is:
How can I repair this file? Is this even the problem preventing me from connecting to this computer via Remote Desktop?

managed to figure out from it is that termsrv.dll is corrupted and windows cannot repair it for some reason.
So, the next step supposedly is
using DISM.
Coincidentally I reached that page last night from
this one, which I thought gave me a better awareness of how much manual repair might be possible. E.g. maybe the WinSxS isn't quite as fragile as we are being led to believe? (It's making me feel sort of like how I used to feel about the
registry when seeing all the caveats about using RegEdit before I got used to that tool.)

Something else that I became aware of yesterday serendipitously is SxStrace.exe. I have never seen it used but it sounds useful. E.g. perhaps easier to interpret for supplemental clues than the ProcMon trace that I usually advocate.
Or perhaps use both and see in ProcMon when the SxStrace is writing. E.g. filter with Operation Is WriteFile.
However, what I would do first is find out what the state of your system is regarding that module. E.g. try this Powershell pipeline to list what you have.

Note that I am giving you the whole command line, including prompt to show where the command should be started from.
C.f. another thread where doing the same diagnostic procedure seems to be finding more a problem with the Windows Update software than with the user's WinSxS cache.

How do I remote control a user in remote desktop services in Windows Server 2012?

Hello,
we currently operate in a 2008 R2 environment with the majority of clients connecting to our terminal servers. We use the remote control feature in terminal services manager to connect to a users session when a user phones our helpdesk with
a question / issue.
Just today I've installed 2012 server on a hyper-v virtual machine to have a play with it. I've installed the Remote Desktop Services and noticed this remote control feature is gone. I can still log off or send a message to a user, but I can
no longer remote control their session.
I've seen one or two other posts stating this feature has been removed completely.
So, a couple of questions:
1. How on earth do I "shadow" or connect to a users session now?
2. If I have to go third party to get this functionality back, what's the best software on the market for this and does it support remote connecting of users who have their RDP session span multiple monitors? (2008 R2 doesn't)
3. Will Microsoft ever bring this feature back? as at this stage I doubt we would move to 2012. This is the one feature that is crucial to the day-to-day running of our helpdesk.

A large percentage of our IT support business is through remote management. Most of our large enterprise customers are Terminal Server environment (now called Remote Desktop - why does Microsoft have to change EVERYTHING - how would they feel if I changed
the colour of the sky from blue to red just because I could?).
Last week, after much expense to the customer (and realising that there WOULD be some cosmetic headaches to contend with Server Management) we installed a new "Remote Desktop Server" for them and shifting them from 2003 - a big leap so we discovered.
During deployment it came as a HORRIFIC surprise that we could not remote control user's sessions!
Yes, we ARE to blame for not fully realising the cock-up Microsoft has made for us. We should have fully researched every detail of what changes they made and what they have robbed us of.
Firstly, the removal of the ability to fully manage user's sessions came as a HUGE blow!
The remaining multiple issues that followed (including the hugely cumbersome and SLOW way of accessing user's sessions and the false information that the console was reporting users logged in when they had already logged out) suddenly resulted in us decommissioning
the new 2012 installation in favour of a 2008 R2 installation.
Some may ask; Why not use "Third Party" apps to counteract the issue? Firstly; why spend MORE and why use a third party app that "is as" cumbersome to use just because of a freaking feature that Microsoft deemed a "security risk" - for G.D sake!
We have now been directed by management to convince customers that a move to 2012 is NOT recommended - good choice boss, I love you!
The question is; will Microsoft re-implement this feature and fix Server Management performance/accessibility in a future release before 2008 R2 is no longer available? Probably not - it looks like their stubbornness to forge ahead with their craze mind-set
of transforming their products into something that is now annoying millions (including their bloody push towards everything-cloud which NONE of our customers want anything to do with).
Microsoft! Get us back on to your side and take a step back, take a deep breath and listen to consumers!

Remote desktop client software not active

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I'm a bit bewildered by this errormessage (and I couldn't get a hit when I searched for it) when I try to drag a file from the xserv to the macbook pro desktop, remote desktop client software not active.
The macbook has the ard server and connects to the xserv ppc. It connects over the internet.
The xserv is behind a iptables fw and I have forwarded 3283 tcp/udp plus 5900 udp/tcp to the server. Have I forgotten a port ?

The macbook pro sits behind an airport which is hooked into the dsl modem. Do I need to configure port forward in the airport as well.
Connecting to the xserv and working on it works great but the copy file transfer fails.

Hi there I took new try at this and this is what finally solved it for me.
The earlier answer I got was very good advise but I had already done that bit, actually I might have overdone it a bit I had checked all the boxes under the useraccount on sharing.
Back to business.
Firewalling. I realised I need to open and portforward at both locations and remeber it's booth tcp and udp.
So at the xserve location I needed to forward 3283 and 5900 both tcp and udp from outside to the IPnumber of the xserve.
At home with my macbook I needed to do the same.
However this did not solve it, I had forgotten one software on the macbook. On the xserve I had installed ARD upgraded it to 3.1 AND installed the upgrade for ARD 3.1 client. The client part I had forgotten at home. So once my ARD and ARD client software matched I could connect to the xserve and drag and drop files booth ways.
ARD wasn't running on the xserve I just had it installed along with the client software.
So portforwarding in firewalls and the same software and versions in all locations seems to have solved it for me.
A small note enabling/disabling the firewall in macbookpro did nothing for me since when enabled ARD rules were in place and active so it still worked.
I hope I made some sense.

Remote Desktop Management service not starting. service-specific error: %%2284126209 - Event ID: 7024

We have a client that has intermittent issues with RDS on a 2012 R2 server.
As an overview of the environment, the client has a single VMWare host support 2 x Windows 2012 R2 VMs one is the File/Print/Email server and the 2nd is the RDS server used to allow the client to run MYOB Enterprise. Both servers have the AD DS role and
DNS roles amongst others.
The 1st issue is that the RD Connection Broker shows the error: "The server pool does not match the RD Connection Brokers that are in it. and then "1. Cannot connect to any of the specified RD Connection Broker servers".
The above issue seems to be caused by the RDMS service not starting. When you attempt to start it, the service stops and the error in the title is logged in the "System" event log. Full transcript below:

I have been attempting to resolve these errors for some time, without success. I have read the many KBs and forum entries related to the above and applied a number of the suggested fixes, including the one which suggests to add the NT SERVICE\ALL SERVICES
to the "Logon as a Service" in the "User Rights Assignment" of the "Default Domain Policy" which is linked to the domain level, that both servers are objects of.
My question to the forum is, can anyone come up with a solution to resolve the above issues and all the RDMS service to start which will then hopefully resolve the broker error?

Hi David,
If virtual machines on the server are Windows Server 2012, then it is not supported to install Remote Desktop Connection Broker on a Domain Controller.

If the VMs are Windows Server 2012 R2, I suggest you install RDS on a separate machine to see if the issue persists.

Alien Remote Desktop and wireless weirdness

I have been having intermittent connectivity problems with my MB the past couple days at the office. Airport shows full power connected to my Belkin WEP-protected wireless router. However, when I try to get online I get a spinning beachball and "server can't be found." Then, other times it works OK. If I move out of my office to another part of the office building the problem usually goes away.
Here's the 1st weird thing: all the other Macs in the office work fine, including a mini that is 10 feet away from my MB. Internet browsing is fast and uninterrupted.
2nd weird thing: under "Shared" on my sidebar there are two screen icons with names like "ubuadm's remote desktop." I do not have Remote Desktop turned on on any of my computers. There are lots of wireless locations listed under the Airport icon when I click on it, so I know my office neighbors have devices on. My questions: Is someone possibly getting into my computer (firewall is on)?? Or, am I just getting interference from one of my neighbors? What can I do to remedy this situation? Thanks!

I found, menu Setup: uPnp. Add a Service Management item.
