Remote Desktop on the OS Mac during connection to the Windows 8.1 PC returns a warning "End of file" and quits

I start the Microsoft Remote Desktop app on the MAC.  A verify Certificate comes up - I click continue.  An alert pops up "End of file".  I have allowed remote access on the Windows 8.1 PC.  I have also allowed the Remote Desktop
to work through the firewall.
I have the correct default gateway ipv4 address.  I believe I would not get to the verify Certificate window if not.  What am I missing?

Hi,
I notice that you mentioned the correct default gateway ipv4 address. Please let us know why and how you use this IP address.
In the settings of the remote desktop client App, the gateway refers to the Remote desktop gateway, not the default gateway.
In other word, if you do not have a RD gateway, just leave the setting blank.
If issue persists, please provide us log file for further research.

  • Remote Desktop is the solution?

I have seen many discussion about using remote desktop but I am still not sure how to. I want to get into my PC (which is in the same wireless internet connection, in the same house) from my MacBook. What do I need to do in my mac and on my PC?

There are links on the Microsoft RDC web page for setting up a Windows computer. Since Windows 7 is a refinement of Windows Vista, try following the Vista setup instructions.
    <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/help.mspx?target=471f8485-8dee-446b-92ba-0e1147a98 f011033&clr=99-6-0&parentid=2aa1559b-784f-445a-866c-2cb58fafcc921033&ep=7&CTT=Ca tegory&MODE=pv&locale=en-US&usid=61e8fffb-2f24-4a93-a0f3-0ecd0165fd4c>
If the above link does not work, try going back to the RDC link
    <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx>
and click on the link that says "Connect to a Windows-based computer". On that page click on "Setup and Settings", then click on "Set up a Windows-based computer for remote access", then "Allow remote connections on a computer that is running Windows Vista".
NOTE: Not all versions of Windows may include Remote Desktop support. If Remote Desktop support is not included in your version of Windows 7, then you will need to look at one of the other options I suggested.
NOTE 2: I'm basically a Mac person. While I've used RDC, it was to Windows systems that had been setup by someone else. I've also used VNC to Windows systems, but again someone else configured them for VNC access.

Are you talking Apple's Remote Desktop software, or Microsoft's?

  • If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?

I have several friends and family who are looking for a central place to access information from ( Pictures, home movies etc ).  So I am considering setting up an OSX Lion Server.  There are some other things I can use it for as well.
    Here is my question:
If I were to purchase the Apple Remote Desktop with Unlimited licenses, would I be able to install the client software on each of there computers/laptops and have them remote desktop into the server?  Or would I have to install the Admin software on each?  Do they intend it to be used strictly as one admin to access many clients?
I always could set up a network drive so they can log in and just see the folders they have created with space on the server I provide them.  But I want them to be able to log an and actually use it as a Remote Desktop.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Dave,
Thanks for the feedback.  I understand that ARD is meant for Remote Administration, but I was not sure if it could be used for my purpose as well.  The reason I was looking to do it this was was because I read several articles online about security and performance issues with setting up VNC and activating screen sharing.  Unless I am misunderstood.
As far as people's activities on the server, mostly it is going to be used as a place for them to store their media.  I will only allow own person ( Who I trust and I know wont botch the server ), to run applications.  Everyone else will be restricted to uploading and downloading content to their designated account on the server as well as a community share on the server.
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • T60p, can't go to desktop after the Windows Logo, only the cursor stays here and can move[pic]

My Thinkpad T60p can't go to desktop after the Windows logo, it has fingerprint, but never appears, only the cursor stays here and can move, the back ground is not black, nothing happens pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or Win button.
Can go to safe mode but the same situation, the cursor is here, black background, nothing happens pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or Win button.
After a long time of searching I guess the very most possible reason is system updating many patches guided by a software that lead me did that.
    Thanks!

If I was given this laptop to diagnose the first thing I would do is swap in another harddrive and confirm all the hardware works. If you don't have another drive to boot from you can use a Linux live-cd, it'll pretty much tell you the same thing and if the laptop works, your solution would be to either fix your operating system or reformat and start over with a new installation.

There are several nice programs that can help you figure out what's on your computer - OmniDiskSweep, WhatSize, and DaisyDisk are the three I like. If you've had your computer for a while - and especially if this isn't your first Mac and you've been migrating from one computer to another, one of these programs can help you find files you didn't know your computer still had. For example, when I was trying to shed files to fit int a 256GB SSD, I discovered I had nearly 1GB of files in my Application Support folder belonging to programs I no longer used.
Other than that, your easy choice are music, video, and photos. They tend to be the big files. A movie will generally be at least 1.25GB, for example.

  • HT1461 For Boot Camp, if you save a file when you are on the Windows side, when you return to the Mac side, can you see the file or can it only be "seen" on the operating side you create it in?

For Boot Camp, if you save a file when you are on the Windows side, when you return to the Mac side, can you see the file or can it only be "seen" on the operating side you create it in?

Why don't you  (generic most every post lacks critical details) be clear and say you never used Mac OS etc.
But, I did try to anticipate and give you what you needed.
Excel is one of those rare programs that, if they are extremely large complex spreadsheets still tend to run better under Office for Windows.
A VM won't do for that but it does make it easier to transition. As in: install Windows natively, then use VMware Fusion or Parallels to attach to the partition and OS. That way you can run Windows as Guest OS VM under Mac; and still run Windows natively dual-boot when needed.
The word "see" was not what you wanted, was it? really? you want to open and make changes and keep it on Windows side rather than Save As or copy to Mac
You use Windows and don't know it has NTFS (NT FileSystem)?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchical_File_System (HFS) native file system used by Apple
And there is much more UEFI style "bios" and other things I suppose.
Great thing about Google and encyclopedias or dictionary, you can look up what you don't know.

  • When trying to sign out of Hotmail the "back navigation button" remains green and I have to click sign out again and the same thing happens over and over and the only way to close Hotmail is to go to File and Close Frame, so what's my problem?

When I attempt to sign out of Hot Mail by clicking "Sign Out," I get the "Sign In" instruction as I always have, however, the green Firefox navigation button remains on bright green (not going to gray) and my MSN home page will not close automatically as usual. I click on the green arrow and I get an instruction to "Sign Out" again. I click on that and get the "Sign In" again but the arrow stays green. I can repeat this countless times and never get signed out and always remaining on the MSN home page. The only way I can close is to go to File and click on Close Window and then my homepage will close and go back to desktop. I've been using Firefox for a couple of years now (IE prior to that for ten years) and have never had this problem. After using "Close Window" I go back onto my home page, from the desktop, and the navigation button is grayed out normally until I sign in again and we start the cycle over again. Have I been hacked?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

I was doing a side-by-side comparison of the new and old server (we backed up the server before the reformat) and I can see that, evidently, CR XI was installed.  We have the directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\Business Objects\3.0 and all the versions match what is located in the project's bin directory.  Does this confirm that I did have XI installed and licensed at one time?
If I purchase a more recent version, couldn't I update the reports to use the newer version?  I have all the source code.
Thanks for your help, it is a nice sanity check for me after hours of reading forums and documentation.
Also, just a shot in the dark, but I'm assuming it wouldn't do me any good to simply restore the aforementioned folder to my C drive?  Would that work if I registered all the dll's?
Edited by: Eric Hollering on Dec 2, 2009 6:40 PM
To be clear, I do have VS 2003 & 2005, and I have the source code.  I just have never used Crystal Reports in any of my .NET apps because the need wasn't there, so recompiling is not out of the question.
Edited by: Eric Hollering on Dec 2, 2009 6:49 PM
Also, I looked at the CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.dll that was in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Business Objects\3.0\Managed folder and when I right-click and view the properties, then the Version tab, in addition to the 11.0.9500.2 version number, there is a property called Product Version that has the value .NET.  Does that mean that this dll was bundled with Visual Studio?
I also found this directory on the old server...does this tell you anything?
    C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 11
I did see that you can still buy XI from CDW.  I have a call into them currently to check with Business Objects for any registrations from my company.

Thank you Russ! Seems as though the timestamp on my audio files was completely incorrect so it placed the files far away from the corresponding video. I've modified the timestamp information and this has helped. The hour/minute information is incorrect but at least now I'm in the ballpark. Thank you!

  • I keep getting an error code while trying to import a cd to my itunes: Error occurred while converting the file. The disc you are attempting to use is full. removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space.  What does this mean?

I keep getting this error code while trying to import a cd to my itunes: "Error occurred while converting the file. The disc you are attempting to use is full. removing files and emptying the recycle bin will free up additional space."  What does this mean?

Well it probably means exactly what it says... How much free space is there on your hard drive where the iTunes Media folder resides? I believe there is also an obscure bug that can occur when software doesn't read the true value of the free space properly, and the workaround is, perversely, to duplicate some content so that with less actual free space the software in question perceives it as more. I've no idea if iTunes is affected by such a bug.

Before downloading the most recent version, I used to be able to save and quit 2 tabs when closing. Now I cannot. Both tabs close

One change in Firefox 4 is to by default stop Firefox displaying the warning message, but it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''browser.tabs.warnOnClose''', if its value is set to '''false''', double-click on it to change its value to '''true'''
    # Repeat this for these 3 preferences '''browser.warnOnQuit''', '''browser.warnOnRestart''' and '''browser.showQuitWarning'''

  • How do I simulate a right-click in Windows when connected with Remote Desktop 8.0 for Mac OS X?

When connecting to a remote Windows 7 OS from Mac OS X 10.8.5 with Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.24091, I'm not able to simulate a right-click with the Apple magic mouse.
On an older version Microsoft Remote Desktop Client version 2.1.1, I can hold down shift+ctl on the Mac and click the magic mouse to simulate a right-click in Windows.  With this new version RDP 8.0, I can't find any way to simulate a right-click,
other than to select "Swap mouse buttons" under settings, and then every click is a right-click and then I'm no longer able to left-click (which is even worse).  I've tried several key combinations and nothing seems to work.  Am I missing
something simple here with the new RDP 8.0 application, or is the right-click simulation not (yet) functional?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

In order to make use of the right-click inside an open session you have three options:
Standard PC two button USB mouse
Apple Magic Mouse: To enable right-click, clickSystem Preferences in the dock, click Mouse, and then enable Secondary click.
Apple Magic Trackpad or MacBook Trackpad: To enable right-click, click System Preferences in the dock, click Mouse, and then enable Secondary click.

  • Apple Remote Desktop doesn't work on outside connections

I use Remote Desktop to control computers at another location from my computer at home (cable modem. This worked fine with my old (non Apple) router. I have upgraded to the dual band Airport Extreme and now Remote Desktop tells me that computers are offline (when they aren't)
How do I get Remote Desktop working? The Airport Extreme is not in double nat-mode.

Let's double-check your port mapping settings for ARD:
To setup port mapping on an DB 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
    1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
    Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
    o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
    o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
    o Click Done.
    2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
    Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
    o Public UDP Port(s): 3283
    o Public TCP Port(s): 3283
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>

  • TS3112 I tried using sudo rm to get rid of remote desktops but the terminal responded as needing password and yet would not let me type in anything.  help please.

I tried to type in details but unable to do so.  we lived in a gated apt buildings in Hi with 24-hour security guards and cameras.  This false sense of security led us to foolishly leave the computer on all the time, not log off even when out shopping.  Never expect people would open our locks (three locks) and walked into our apt while we were out.  We have dishes, clothes and corning vision cookwares missing.  We have all our important docs including computer serial numbers.  We noticed our computer not respond and files and applications move around.  We know they are not done by themselves and looked into console log list.  The person who remotely logs or links with our computer thought that we are old folks and knew little about how to discover their act. Tried many times to get rid of it but was not successful.  Finally today we hauled our  imac to the apple store and explained the need to get rid of remote desktop.  All went well and we thought our computer is at a factory installed state.   We forgot to start firewall, probably did not disconnect third party help status (apple store third party).  Forgot to write down cable provider IP and resulted in using wi fi.  Look into system log list and other diagnostics messages and found an mac book pro and went back to see if I can write down the entire message but this time it went blank.  system log blank, library logs blank and /var/logs blank and so is user log.  Activity monitor froze would not open.  We had it clean up in apple store today november 18, 2013.  We have an Imac and don't know anyone who owns mac book pro with log message dated on oct 22.  The question is how it still hangs around after reset at the apple store and how to get rid of it and if it is possible?  greatly appreciated.

The Terminal is letting you type it in. It just doesn't display anything when you do.
