Remote Desktop Question

Hi All,
I get the funny feeling at my work that the IT guy can log on and view my screen. I have heard they use a program called 'Chicken of the VNC' Does anyone know if i can tell if i am being wathced as I don't bloody like it.
I have turned off sharing etc in my firewall but is it still possible to get access to my machine to view. Are there any services etc i can look at to see if they are running which may give me a guide.
Many thanks

Hi, thanks for the response. I don't have ARD in my sytem prefernces. Also checked login items and nothing there and checked processes and nothing running showing VNC or anything.
Maybe I am just being paranoid, I was just curious if there were secret ways to get access etc.
Thanks for the help

    Hello,
    does anyone know why MS started the CM12 Agent Remote Desktop delayed?
    I am searching for a documentation where i can read about it. in CM07 was the service not delayed but in CM12 since SP1.
    Thanks a lot

    You will not find answers to 'why' questions in any documentation ;-) The only answer that comes close is: "because Microsoft decided to design it that way". You can change the startup type by using a GPO though.

  • General remote desktop question

    If i set up remote desktop will i be able to use the apps on the remote computer?
    Basically what i want to be able to to is use my laptop to access my main shop computer to use quickbooks while i am on the road. I want to be able to invoice and print out the invoices on the office computer and printer.
    will remote desktop work for this?

    Yes, it would. But if all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be overkill. Look into the freeware VNC. That will give you control capabilities and not cost you anything. You can find VNC applications for Mac here. Most people seem to find Chicken of the VNC works well for them.

  • Solaris Remote Desktop Question...

    Hello;
    I have a quick ? for all you Solaris gods! :-)..
    Is there a software package that will allow me to see a session of someone logged on!? For instance...
    Windows Desktop, TeamViewer, etc., are packages that will interact with the currently logged on user & both people see the same thing, etc.
    I have checked NXServer and VNC, and it doesn't seem that either of them do this, but rather use "individual" sessions so to speak!?
    An I correct!? Or have I just setup the configuration files wrong!?
    Thank you for the help in advance! This is important!

    VNC can do this as long as both users are connected to the same session. VNC doesn't let you drop in on a session started outside of VNC.
    I'm less familiar with NX, but I thought it was the same.

  • Remote Desktop Connection Expert Question...

    I am looking for someone with a lot of experience with Windows Remote Desktop Connection to answer a basic question or two...
    I have a WireShark capture (only one side unfortunately) which shows 880 MBytes sent from the client running the Remote Desktop Connection, to the host; but I have no WireShark capture of the packet volume coming from the host to the client IP address. The
    capture is for a period spanning 32 hours. I am being asked to try and determine (guestimate) the amount of data that might have been sent from the host to the client... I know this is a real out there question; which is why I'm looking for someone with
    real Remote Desktop Connection experience.
     Given that if the volume of traffic from the client to the host is 880MBytes over 32 hours; is there any way at all of guessing how much might have been sent from the host to the client?
    Please be kind, this is important and I am presenting all of the information I have.
    Thank you!

    Agreed with T.Murr here. Only based on the networks traces from one way connection, is hard to determine what happens on the other side.

  • Questions regarding Outlook Web App, Remote Desktop, Remote Web Access and VPN Access

    Hi there,
    I want to ask a series of questions regarding Outlook Web App, Remote Desktop, Remote Web Access and VPN access and was hoping whether you could help me. Below are my questions to ask you.
    Outlook Web App - What do I need to configure in order to get my Exchange account to work with the OWA app on my iPhone? Is Office 360 required on the server that hosts Outlook Web App in our organisation? When I configure the settings and
    connect I get the following message "couldn't connect -  We couldn't connect to the server. Check your information and make sure it's correct." I can connect with other devices using Outlook Web App.
    Remote Desktop - What do I need to configure in order to connect to my computer at work using Remote Desktop on my Windows Phone? When I configure the settings and connect I get the following message "Connection error - We couldn't connect
    to the remote PC. Make sure the PC is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled. Inquiring minds may find this error code helpful: 0x204" I can connect with other devices using Remote Desktop. There are currently no
    RD Server settings in the Remote Desktop app on the Windows Phone and the only way I'm to connect to my PC at work is via Remote Desktop and not to be confused with the one by Microsoft, however the app is on a trial basis and times out every 5 minutes and
    can only be used once every hour unless I purchased the app for £2.99 off the App Store but would ideally like to use the Microsoft Remote Desktop app though.
    Remote Web Access - What do I need to configure in order to get Remote Web Access on my Windows Phone using a URL? When I log in using a URL I get the following message "There is a problem with this Web page. Please contact the person who manages
    the server" I can connect with other devices using Remote Web Access. Also how do you enable the background option for Remote Web Access? I know how to do this in Remote Desktop but not in Remote Web Access. Remote Web Access works on PCs regardless
    being onsite and offsite and on my iPhone, the same issue also occurs with my Nokia 5230s regardless of whether I'm using Opera Mobile or Mini or the latest Nokia Browser.
    VPN access - How do you configure VPN access on a Windows Phone using VPN? I cannot find the protocols PPTP, L2TP, SSTP and IPsec in order to configure VPN access on the Windows Phone apart from IKEv2.
    Many thanks,
    RocknRollTim

    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,

  • Questions in regards to server 2012R2 Remote desktop Service deployment and GPO

    Hi Everyone
    We have a business requirement moving to 2012R2 RDSH server. I have installed a 2012R2 member servers and enabled Remote desktop licensing role. I have activated the licenses. the servers is in operational
    I have deployed 3 windows 2012R2 member server "RDS1" , "RDS2" and "RDS3".
    on RDS1 I ran Add roles and Feature Wizard > Remote Desktop Services installation > Quick Start >Session based desktop deployment to complete the installation.
    On RDS1 Server Manage Dashboard Page Select Remote Desktop Services > Overview. Under RD Licensing I added my 2012R2 license server "2012r2-tslic". Go to task. Edit deployment properties RD license mode to per device and click OK.
    Reboot RDS1
    Check RD Licensing Diagnoser everything is clear
    On RDS2 I did the exact same thing ran Add roles and Feature Wizard > Remote Desktop Services installation > Quick Start >Session based desktop deployment to complete the installation.
    But With RDS2 I move this server to an OU that link to a GPO with RD licensing details. after reboot the servers check RD Licensing Diagnoser I can see 2012r2-tslic specified as the license servers.
    Based on this document
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2013/09/20/rd-licensing-configuration-on-windows-server-2012.aspx  Are you suppose to configure RD license server via Remote desktop Service deployment ? Not GPO ?
    Here are my questions
    We currently have ten 2008r2 terminal servers in a NLB cluster. each RDSH server have in house application installed on each one of them. User connect to the 2008R2 RDSH servers via RDP connection. we have a restricted GPO apply to those
    RDSH servers. user cannot do anything on RDSH servers apart from running the application and use excel.  On the remote desktop session host configuration we have enable settings like end a disconnected session , Active session limit  ,
    remote control users session , LPT port redirection.
    We push out RD license server detail via GPO to the terminal servers
    Can I use our existing GPO apply the licensing server settings , desktop restriction setting to the 2012R2 RDHS servers or we should be using Remote desktop Service deployment to do the job ? If that is the case how would you transfer the
    current 2008r2 environment to 2012 using Remote desktop Service deployment. is that mean I have to manually configure 1 by 1.
    Please help
    Many thanks

    Hi,
    Please see my response to you in the other thread.  Please contact me via email and I will go over the basic planning and deployment steps with you which will help clear things up and get you started off on the right foot.
    You should only run through the wizard and create a RDS deployment once.  Then you add the various servers (RDSH, RD Licensing, RD Gateway, etc), set Deployment properties, etc.
    Thanks.

  • Apple Remote Desktop session questions

    Hi all:  Just got my new mini server up the running.  I have a question concerning Apple Remote Desktop that I would like answered before plunking down $79.  I am wondering how ARD handles sessions run from a device with a smaller screen than the device you are trying to control?  That is, does ARD do simple screen scaling like you can do in vnc OR does it open a new remote x session that has the appropriate resolution for your device?  I am hoping it funcitons the same way MS Remote Desktop Connecton does.

    You'd be better off asking this question in the Remote Desktop forum...
    ARD supports 2 modes scaling, and "panning". As far as I know, there is no support for what you are describing.

  • Noobie question -- limits of remote desktop?

    Hi there,
    I'm confused about the limits of file manipulation with remote desktop. I've got a few quick questions:
    -- Can I move files around on various hard drives on the remote computer?
    -- Can I drop files onto droplets?
    Apologies for the simplicity of the questions. I'm finding it hard to see a definitive list of what you can do and can't do with ARD.
    All the best -- thanks for any help.

    Can I move files around on various hard drives on the remote computer?
    With a UNIX mv command or by taking control of the client system and moving the files as you would if you were sitting at the client workstation, yes. ARD itself has no direct feature for moving or copying files on a client system itself.
    Can I drop files onto droplets?
    Only by taking control of the client system.

  • Questions about Remote Desktop?

    I didnt see a link to a "Remote Desktop" forum, so I posted here hoping to get a couple of questions answered.
    Im going to sweeping and installing the new OS to 12+ 3yo Macbooks, and have a barrage of software that needs to be installed on all the machines. To include: Snow Leopard, iWork 09, iLife 09, Remote Desktop, Deep Freeze, and CS3. All the software was purchased thru the Education site, for the use on multiple Macs on the same network.
    Essentially we're trying to optimize the process of loading software individually on each machine, and want to possibly make a CLONE of 1 Macbook that we will install all software, set System Preferences with Guest Accounts and Parental Controls, for our Mac Computer Lab, that we run at our Carrer/Technical School.
    We want to make it seemless with Remote Desktop, Account Privleges, and parental controls to be able to not only monitor but to make the computers SUPER STABLE to handle the students and their sometimes improper use of the computers
    QUESTION: After reading up on the new Remote Desktop and its Auto Install features....is this a tool that would help obtain our goals quicker that installing all the software on each computer indivudually.
    Right now, we were going to sweep, install new OS, and software on one machine. Using SuperDuper or something comprable to make a cloned copy of the HD, and using the clone to boot and run each computer with the exact settings, software and preferences that we intially set on the first computer
    DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND DOABLE THRU REMOTE DESKTOP AUTO INSTALL?
    DOES THE ROUTE WE PLAN ON TAKING SOUND LIKE A SOLID PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH OUR GOAL?
    If you answered yes to anyone of those, if you can give any insight on what you know or have done in the past that might help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED
    Thanks for your time

    The specific link for Apple Remote Desktop is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1007
    This is the link for all the Forums. Apple Remote Desktop is in the Server Section at the bottom of the 2nd Column:
    http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
    You can't install Snow Leopard Remotely. Think about it.
    What you could do - and assuming you have OSX Server - is install 10.6 on one mac, get it fully up to date, install the remaining applications - assuming site licenses - use the System Image Utility on the Server (or a Client with the application installed) to create a NetBoot Image of that built workstation. Image the rest using OSX Server's NetBoot Service. I've done numerous site installations using OSX Server and NetBoot (60 and more individual workstations) in a day or two depending on the Software installed.
    Not surprisingly there is a dedicated forum for this also:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96
    +" . . . is this a tool that would help obtain our goals quicker that installing all the software on each computer individually."+
    Apart from the initial OS install - Yes. You can install incremental OS Updates using ARD easily and quickly. Again if you have OSX Server you can utilise it's Software Update Service to achieve the same thing quickly and easily.
    If you don't have OSX Server you can by all means do this the way you're saying. You don't even need to use SuperDuper - why pay for something that can be done for free with what's already supplied? All you need is a firewire cable, target disk mode and the Restore option in Disk Utility. The more firewire cables you have the sooner you'll get it done.
    It does not really matter what you're using for your Network although a Time Machine Capsule is adequate enough.

  • The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period Question

    On my Windows 2012 Server, when I open the RD Licensing Diagnoser, I see this:
    The Remote Desktop Session Host server is within its grace period, but the RD Session Host server has not been configured with any license server.
    Configure a license server for the Remote Desktop Session Host server. If you have an existing license server, specify that license server for the RD Session Host server. Otherwise, install RD Licensing on a computer on your network and Configure RD Session
    Host server to use it.
    I have a few questions.  First, I have 10 virtual machines setup (all Windows 7 Enterprise).  I have my 10 VDI licenses for those machines.  Do I need another license for my Remote Desktop Session Host?  If not, how do I license my RD Session
    Host Server?  If so, does anyone know how much they cost?  I have no licensing server.  I just have my Windows 2008 server that is my AD and DNS Server (where my GPO's sit too) and my Windows 2012 server that is dedicated to only running VM's
    for the remote users.

    you should probably speak to a licensing expert as it can start getting fairly complicated and we wouldn't want to advise you incorrectly. Generally if you speak to a LAR (Large Account Reseller) they should be able to provide the guidance you need.
    You can find more information on licensing virtual desktop through this white paper

  • Remote Desktop - Cmd+D - save without closing question

    I'm trying to write a script that will allow me to quit an application (SketchBookExpress) without saving changes.  I'm having trouble with the syntax for the "Don't Save" (cmd+d).  The script runs but stops at the on screen Save/Canel/Don't Save dialog box.
    What I have tried is the following:
    osascript -e 'tell application "SketchBookExpress" to activate';
    osascript -e 'tell application "SketchBookExpress" to quit';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to delay 0.5';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to keystroke "d" using {command down}';
    And I've tried:
    osascript -e 'tell application "SketchBookExpress" to quit';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to delay 0.5';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to key down command';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to keystroke "d"';
    And, I've also tried:
    osascript -e 'tell application "SketchBookExpress" to quit';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to delay 0.5';
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to to keystroke "d" using {command}';
    I'm very new to Remote Desktop and AppleScript and would appreciate any help you can provide about how to close an app without saving it.
    Thanks.

    I think you need to turn this on its head.
    SketchBook Express is not scriptable, so you can't use the 'normal' method, which would be:
    tell application "SketchBook Express" to quit saving no
    The problem with your approach is that AppleScript is serial - each command is executed in turn, so it's waiting for the app to quit before executing the next command (unless you run all these commands in parallel, but that's a different issue.
    However, there's a simpler solution to your problem:
    killall SketchBookExpress
    This sends the Kill command to the app, quitting it, bypassing the whole 'Save changes?' process.
    This is a standard shell command, so you don't need AppleScript (or osascript) to run it. If you do want to wrap this in a larger script, just use 'do shell script':
    do shell script "killall SketchBookExpress"

  • HT5170 About Apple Remote Desktop client 3.5.3, what is it, is the question

    Seeing this - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5170?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    Apple Remote Desktop client 3.5.3 is included in the OS X Lion v10.7.4 Update,
    and as a standalone update for Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard clients. This update provides general OS compatibility fixes.
    That's a About explanation?
    I have an update waiting - not applied of course.
    No Idea what it is - or what it's for.
    So go to link to find out - and it's Zero result.

    It's the client for this application:
    http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/
    Apple bundles the client with all installations of OS X so administrators don't have to install it.

  • Remote desktop / screen sharing / VPN questions

    Hi all-
    OK, I am trying to set up our all-mac environment to do something in particular - but I am only 'novice' level at VPN stuff and 'noob' to the Apple Remote Desktop and Screen Sharing stuff. I already have screen sharing set up, and also have back to my mac set up - but these both seem to be 'whole computer' control methods, where the remote user takes over the entire target machine. I have a different need, but don't know what terms to use to describe it or how I might achieve it.
    Environment overview:
    2014 iMac, 2009 13" MacBook Pro, 2009 17" MacBook Pro - all running Yosemite.
    2013 AirPort Extreme handling the LAN, both wired and wireless. iMac is wired, MacBooks are wireless.
    iMac: Two users (UserA and UserB, both admins).
    MPB13: Two users (UserB as admin and UserC as standard).
    MBP17: Two users (UserA as admin and UserD as standard).
    I am wondering if this is possible to do, and if so - HOW? :
    UserB sits at the iMac, and is using it. UserA sits at MBP17 and wants to get something done on the iMac, so UserA logs into MBP17 as UserA then remotes into the iMac as UserA and does what they need to do in UserA's iMac account - without making UserB (who is still sitting at the iMac and using it) stop what they are doing.
    Hope this makes sense, and am looking forward to your input.

    UserA must have a user account set up on the iMac that is different from UserB. With this set up when UserA initiates a Screen Sharing session with the iMac from the MBP17 they will just need to log in with their user account. When they do that a dialog box will pop up asking if they want to share the display with the user currently using the iMac, in this case UserB, or if they want to connect to a Virtual Display, which would give them their own environment separate from UserB who is already logged in and using the iMac.
    Here is an example of the dialog box UserA should see when they attempt to start a screen sharing session with another Mac in which another person is already login in and using the Mac. In this case UserA will select the option to connect to the Virtual Display which allows them to work on the iMac without disturbing the user that is already using the computer. Note that the user already using the iMac may experience a slight performance hit because two users are using the resources on the one computer.
    As for the acronym VPN, it stands for Virtual Private Network which is a protocol for making a encrypted secure connection over a public network between two or more separate networks. Screen Sharing actually uses a protocol called VNC which stands for Virtual Network Computing.
