Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) Configuration on a Server Standard 2012, standalone installation

I'm new to this, so bear with me..
I need help locating documentation on how to configure a Server Standard 2012, standalone server, to act as a terminal server. In server 2008, you could have the server as a domain controller, and also host remote desktop sessions for thin clients. Apparently
a lot has changed with 2012, and I don't think I'm even using the right search terms because I having a time finding proper information.
I'll be glad to provide whatever further information is needed for someone to help me..
Thanks in advance, and looking forward to gaining a better understanding of how this works. Don't mind doing the work, like I said, i just need some good documentation I can follow.

  • Live Migration and Remote Desktop (Terminal Services)

From what I've read about live migration, it seems that network connections are maintained after the migration is complete.  If I am migrating a terminal server, will the user sessions be maintained or will they need to reconnect?

We currently have multiple Citrix servers housed on Hyper-V clusters and have at time migrated a VM with anywhere between 10- 40 users on it without any noticeable interruption of service.  From my experience it works as expected, but Citrix has
session reliability which helps through periodic network interruptions.  Testing certain apps will be the key.  Also, to be safe, moving a fullly loaded Terminal Server in the middle may not be the prime time when you want to do this on a regular
basis.  In my 24/7 organization the addition of live migration has moved my maintenance window from 1am - 3am to 7pm - 10pm.

    Hi,
I've got an old iMac which would be ideal to act as a "dumb terminal" for connecting to my employer's Microsoft Terminal Server.
Is there any software for Mac OS 9.2.2 that will allow me to do this?
I've got no other option like VNC because the company only allows us to connect to a Terminal Server.
    Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for your input.
So far this is the only one I've found myself. Maybe it just doesn't exist. Back in them days compatibility with Windows wasn't so important as it is today

We have deployed 3 servers and tried to start the pooled managed desktop, it is showing an error in final stage. The error is " the integration components in the virtual desktop
template are not the correct version”. We have installed integration service setup and completed sysprep steps in windows 7 pro SP1 machine also.
Please let us know the furthers.
    Edward Antony.D | Quadrasystems.net India Pvt Ltd

    Hi A
This means unless you updated the integration services on your Windows 2012 or Windows 7 VMs (and Windows Server 2008 R2), they will be running an older version of the Integration Services. Machine\Auto\IntegrationServicesVersion for the IC version,
or from the host by using this command:
To update the easiest way, extract the content from C:\Windows\System32\vmguest.iso from the Hyper-V host to a folder, then launch the setup.exe from the relevant support\<architecture> folder on each VM. For example:
    \\server\ISCUpdate\amd64\setup.exe /quiet /norestart
Note that this will require a reboot of the VM at some point, but the /norestart suppresses.
Let me know if this helps you

  • The remote desktop session host configuration & Remote session shadowing options missing in Windows server 2012.

    Hi All,
I am using a Windows server 2012 Standard. When i leave my session idle for more than 20 min it disconnects and post more 20 minutes my session is logged off.
I know this setting can be changed from Remote desktop session host configuration in Windows server 2008 R2. But this option "Remote desktop session host configuration" is not there in Windows server 2012. Does any one have an idea where do i go
and edit these settings in the Server 2012 o/s ?
Also the Remote session shadowing option is also not available when i right click a user in the task manager. Any idea on an alternate method in Windows server 2012 ?

Exactly WHERE are the W2K12 R2 equivalent GPO settings to W2K8 R2 GPO settings of "Set time limit for disconnected sessions" and "set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services
sessions"?  Microsoft changed the remote desktop/terminal services around.
    Appreciate it.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - Remote Desktop Management service won't start

Dear colleges, I'm seeking your help in resolving a weird issue with Remote Desktop.
The Remote Desktop Management service gives the following error message any  time it is attempted to start:
"The Remote Management Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
The Event Viewer error message is as follows:
"The Remote Desktop Management service failed to start. Error code: 0x88250001"
Whenever I connect to the server with RD I get error message that the Remote Desktop Licensing Server isn't configured and that the RD trill will expire in N-days. The server is up to date updates wise and has been licensed for 5 RD CALs. The server hosts DNS
server and has AD DS role installed, is virtualized to have one Hyper-V server.
I read some blogs about having both DNS and AD DS on one box is a bad sea and a root cause of the issue. Well, that very well may be, but for me that's an option as I'm not going to get a box to just host DNS. There should a solution to this as I shouldn't
only one suffering from this issue.
I also read about KB2871777 - Servicing stack update supposedly addressign this issue. Well, it's on my system and the issue is there too. :)
Will I loose ability to RD when the trial expires or it's just another misleading MS message that can be ignored?
How do I mend Remote Desktop Management service to start?
    Appreciate your help!

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Can administrators perfectly connect to RDS environment?
In meantime please check that you have properly configured and activated RD License role service and install RDS CAL on it. It might also possible that you have configured RD License server but it server can’t find it and giving you error due to certificate
also. Please check that you have properly configured certificate on your RDS Server. Try to install and update below hotfix for License related issue.

If you have configured both RDS and AD DS on single server then also you may find some error reading this. If so please try to setup both roles on different server and check the result. In addition to this, please check below articles.

  • The Remote Desktop Management service terminated with the following service-specific error %%4294967295

Got this error after a reboot for the monthly MS hotfixes. After messing around too much, I finally found the problem and though that I would document it here since I have not found the solution anywhere I looked.
This is in a Remote Desktop setup of two RDCB using a SQL DB that is hosted on a third server. The Remote Desktop Management service would fail to start with the "The Remote Desktop Management service terminated with the following service-specific
error: %%4294967295" error because the SQL Server service hosting the database was offline. It had not automatically restarted after the same hotfixes. So I started the SQL server, then was able to get Remote Desktop Management to start on my RDCB without
    any delay.

  • Remote Desktop Management service not starting. service-specific error: %%2284126209 - Event ID: 7024

    Hi Forum members,
We have a client that has intermittent issues with RDS on a 2012 R2 server.
As an overview of the environment, the client has a single VMWare host support 2 x Windows 2012 R2 VMs one is the File/Print/Email server and the 2nd is the RDS server used to allow the client to run MYOB Enterprise. Both servers have the AD DS role and
    DNS roles amongst others.
The 1st issue is that the RD Connection Broker shows the error: "The server pool does not match the RD Connection Brokers that are in it. and then "1. Cannot connect to any of the specified RD Connection Broker servers".
The above issue seems to be caused by the RDMS service not starting. When you attempt to start it, the service stops and the error in the title is logged in the "System" event log. Full transcript below:

I have been attempting to resolve these errors for some time, without success. I have read the many KBs and forum entries related to the above and applied a number of the suggested fixes, including the one which suggests to add the NT SERVICE\ALL SERVICES
to the "Logon as a Service" in the "User Rights Assignment" of the "Default Domain Policy" which is linked to the domain level, that both servers are objects of.
My question to the forum is, can anyone come up with a solution to resolve the above issues and all the RDMS service to start which will then hopefully resolve the broker error?
    Regards,
    David West.

    Hi David,
If virtual machines on the server are Windows Server 2012, then it is not supported to install Remote Desktop Connection Broker on a Domain Controller.
    More information for you:
Remote Desktop Services role cannot co-exist with AD DS role on Windows Server 2012

Guidelines for installing the Remote Desktop Session Host role service on a computer running Windows Server 2012 without the Remote Desktop Connection Broker role service
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839
If the VMs are Windows Server 2012 R2, I suggest you install RDS on a separate machine to see if the issue persists.

  • Remote Desktop Connection certification issue with Win Server 2008 R2

When connecting to Windows 2008 server R2, from Windows 7, Vista and Mac OS 10.6.7 via Remote Desktop Connection, i am getting a 'Server Name on the Certificate is Incorrect' error.
if i click connect, i can still connect to the machine, due to a 3rd party managing the server, this doesn't look very professional on my part...
The server is a standalone machine and is not currently on a domain. RDC is only used for management purposes.

    Hi,
This certificate error is normal, because your client do not trust the certificate which is installed on the terminal server. To avoid this issue,
you can export the certificate and import this certificate into the client side (computer account).
    Thanks.
