Remote desktop - what can I do?

I am a teacher - High School. I have 24 i macs - one on my desk dedicated to monitoring students computers. A few students will simply surf the web all day rather than do their work. Can I disable safari (the only browser they have) or shut down the access to the internet on individual computers through remote desktop? I am on an ethernet network (no wireless) and I have no access to the main ethernet plug into my classroom, it is another locked room. Anyway my attendance is on line and I need it for me at all times.

Another teacher was showing me deep freeze, a really cool PC program like remote desktop and she can disable the internet on individual computers, she can also disable programs. There was an icon on her desktop just for that. I was really impressed, I find it hard to believe remote desktop is so far behind this PC application! All I seem to be able to do is turn off computers, lock computers. send messages, basic stuff. Maybe it is not the best for a classroom setting???

Is it possible the other teacher was using Insight? Deep Freeze (made by the same company, Faronics) doesn't do any of the stuff that you mentioned, but Insight does. It's also available for Mac OS X but the browser controls require Internet Explorer so it's useless for what you want it to do.
OS X has Parental Controls built-in, however, and you can use that to limit access to web sites in Safari. Apparently (I didn't know this until I checked just now), you can use the Parental Controls system preferences panel in 10.5 on your computer to control the restrictions on other 10.5 computers. Open up the Parental Controls panel and click on the Mac Help button down in the lower right of the window and follow the instructions.
So if that works, great! A solution to control browsing behavior on your Macs at no additional cost.

RT: Remote desktop says "can't find a suitable device for drive C"

there is a french post on exactly the same topic, but I can't apply the solution given there.
My problem is the following: I have a remote desktop prepared to work as RT target. It has been checked for compatibility, the hard drive has been formatted in FAT32 format, it has been found by my host and has been assigned a static ip address. I have installed the software I need ( LabView 9.0 RT) using MAX. Now, when I try to boot it with the option "boot using software installed into the hard drive", all I get is the message
"Can't find a suitable device for drive C"
I have reseted the BIOS, have tried formatting the hard drive in the other format, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, tried to start the target pc without the usb stick, but nothing seems to work.
Do you have any ideas about what is going wrong?

So you've got a IDE (and not SATA) hard drive? That should be supported anyway.
That would only confirm my experience... it's hard to find hardware compatible with LV RT. Before buying you cannot know if it's compatible. Once you have it the evaluation tool might tell you it's supported but still it might not work. I tried several motherboards in the last years, most of them did not work.
Your best bet might be to use relatively old hardware.

he can login this server by remote desktop.
My server is windows 2003 but not in nt domain and it is a workgroup computer.
I want to limit him access right on one folder in which have many folders and .exe file.
I only want he can read , write,modify file and traverse folder but not execute any .exe file.
How can I implement this through NTFS.
Please give me some advice.

Remote Desktop Connection can't login to restarted PC

I can access my XP Pro PC using Remote Desktop Connection after I have logged in locally but if I attempt to access it after a restart, or after a startup from shutdown, I get a error message:
The client could not connect to the remote computer.
And then a list of reasons why it may not be working (non of which - as usual - apply).
I can access the PC with it's local keyboard and mouse and login in locally, then connect using Remote Desktop Connection on my mac just fine, but if I shut the PC down, restart it and try logging in from the Mac I get that error message.
BTW I tried finding info about this on the msft site but it's really useless.

Basically you can't login as the PC is not connected to the network.
Use the XP PowerToys to automate the login process.

Remote desktop fails, can still connect to event log and services.

I am unable for some reason to remote into a machine that I've been able to before. This occurred after it installed automatic updates. At the moment I can connect to
services and the event log from another machine with the same credentials, but I can't log onto the machine itself. Is there any way to reset this info or such. This machine is a part of a domain and can read credentials from the domain controller.
I also do know that remote desktop is enabled.

The following methods could be used to resolve some of the most common problems.
Potential issues that may be seen:
1.) Remote Desktop endpoint is missing
Each virtual machine that is created should have a remote desktop endpoint for the VM at port 3389. If this endpoint is deleted then a new endpoint must be created. The public port can be any available port number. The private port (the port on the VM) must
be 3389.
2.) RDP fails with error: "The specified user name does not exist. Verify the username and try logging in again. If the problem continues, contact your system administrator or technical support."
RDP connection may fail when there are cached credentials. Please see the following article to resolve this problem:

I don't use DeployStudio and know nothing about it. In terms of simply changing the names? Yes. Clearly not in the same way. You could use what's built-in on OSX Server if you have it? System Image Utility allows creation of nbis with an associated workflow that can define workstation names from a pre-prepared list of MAC Addresses and desired names as a Post-Install Action.
This is fairly well-documented in the Server Forum and elsewhere.

5. Release Home button.

6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.

Apple Remote Desktop is off be default. It has to be enabled for some one to be able to remotely connect to the computer. And then, you still have to have a user name and password on the computer to remotely connect with.
If you want to see if remote access has is enabled for Apple Remote Desktop; you can find the setting in, Apple Menu, System Prefrences, Sharing. If it's enabled, Remote Management or Screen Sharing will be checked.
Beucase Apple Remote Desktop Agent is part of the Mac Operating System; even if your not using it, Apple Software Updates will from time to time offer updates for ARD Agent. Software Updates can some times be stacked ontop of each other; so chosing not to install an update, can mean other updates you may want may not be offered. At least until you install the updates those updates require. Also software updates can improve the security of your computer.

4150L - Works on web, but can not connect via VPN or Remote Desktop

Recently purchased a 4150L and installed the latest firmware. We have been able to access all public websites without any problems. But, when we try and access our customers computers via VPN (various types) or Remote Desktop, we can't connect. We can sign-in to VPN, but when we try and access the computer, it says "can't connect". Exact same message with Remote Desktop. We are able to connet when use a Verizon phone as a hotspot and from every other internet service that we have tried (i.e. hotels, starbucks, etc.) It appears it is an issue with the 4150L.
Verizon Tech Support has been no help!

VPN traffic should be allowed through on the MiFi 4510L by default. I know I do not have any issues with mine on either the Cisco IPSec or Cisco SSL VPN Clients.
If Verizon DNS is interferring then perhaps you could try to connect to your VPN via a direct IP Address instead of a URL. Not sure what VPN client you have but there should be a No DNS option to connect if you know the correct IP. You could also try switching your DNS to one of the free ones such as the one offered by Google or any of the others.
VPN's carry alot of overhead on existing connections in my experience. Its not untypical to have a 3G connection cut in half when a VPN is applied. Try running a speed test to make sure your connection is atleast 1 MB on download before initiating a connection. If the performance of the MiFi is too poor in that area it may never be stable enough to support a connection. Feel free to post some Speedtest.net averages so we can see what you are working with.
Something to note about the MiFi 4510L is that it is on the SIM card network. That means that NAT is always going to be an issue and block your users from providing a truely public IP Address. Directly remoting to them through any means will be nearly impossible.

I just installed OL 6.3 on a HP Proliant ML380 g7. Now I want to connect to the server using any Remote Desktop tools but I can not!
I've activated system>pref>Remote Desktop
But I can not access any of servers from:
- a Mac using, Mac server sharing screen, VNC viewer or Microsoft Remote connection which is in a same subnet
- Other Server Using KRDC, Remote Desktop Viewer, terminal server client or tiger VNC viewer
Also I tried to connect to servers after activating krfb
but it always says no rout to server/ server not found/ connection closed
and remote desktop viewer can not find any host when I try to use option "find"

Make sure to enable "require a password..." in the Remote Desktop Preference on the Linux system. Some clients won't work unless this is set. Unfortunately the Remote Desktop Preferences panel on the Linux side does not show you the port it is listening on, but you can get it by clicking on the IP or name that it shows as a link. The first user or vnc server is usually listening on port 5900, then 5901, and so on.
Your problem is probably the firewall on your Linux system. You can disable the firewall on the Linux system:
service iptables stop
However, probably a better idea, simply tunnel the connection through SSH as following:
On the Mac, open the Terminal application from the Applications/Utilities folder. Then type the following:

ssh -L local_port:localhost:remote_port -N -f -l username server_address
</pre>
local_port = port on your Mac that does not conflict with any of your own screen-sharing or other services, e.g. 5555
remote_port = vnc server port on your Linux system
username = user for which you have enabled remote desktop sharing
server_address = ip address or FQDN of your Linux system.
For instance:

</pre>
The trick is now to connect to a local port on your Mac, instead using the address of your Linux server. The communication will be encrypted using ssh going over tcp port 22, which is normally enabled in the firewall.
The Mac screen sharing application is working fine. On your Mac, select "Go>Connect to Server" from the Finder menu and type:
vnc://localhost:5555

Remote Desktop and Airports

Did I see somewhere that there is an add on or plug in for Remote Desktop that can monitor airport base stations on your network? I would love to find this if its true to keep an eye on base stations that sometimes seem to disappear. The airport monitor stuff does not do so well because it just sees what is up and does not show you what is not up and I can not remember all 50 base station names to remember what is missing from the list.
Anyone else using this or know where I can find it??

I've never seen such a thing (I've never seen any sort of plugin for ARD), and though I won't say one doesn't exist, knowing a bit about ARD, I can't see how it would be possible.
