Remote disc icon?

Hi,
Just got one of the new Mac minis and it's a cracking wee machine. One small question, however. I re-installed OS X and under devices as well as under Computer I have a cd icon saying 'Remote Disc'. I understand that this is for installing OS X across a network or sharing a disc but why is the icon there? Shouldn't it be there only if I have cd or dvd sharing on?
This is on a clean install (10.5.6) nothing changed, wireless connection. I've got a unibody Macbook and a Power Mac all running Leopard and none of them seem to show the icon.
Apologies for the really dumb questions but gets me wondering why it's there by default.
Cheers guys!

dunes,
I have the same experience with my new Mac Mini.
None of my computers have DVD/CD sharing turned on.
Even if I turn on DVD/CD sharing on any my computers, none of the other computers show a Remote Disc in the sidebar.
This Remote Disc has never showed up on any of my computers until I got this new Mini.
There doesn't seem to be much info on DVD/CD sharing that I can find. It doesn't appear that anyone is using this feature except for owners of the MacBook Air.
At this point, I would just like to get rid of this Remote Disc icon and get back to normal.
I have found 3rd party documents on how to turn this feature on for non MacBook Air users, but nothing to turn it off.

  • "Remote Disc" icon on MBP ??

    hi,
in this thread _http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2002127&tstart=0_ they discuss the (unique ?) feature that comes with the MBA and Mini.
is it possible to have the "remote disc" icon in the finder sidebar on my MBP ?
    best regards

  • Bring back the "Remote disc" icon

not knowing exactly what it was supposed to be for, i "poof'd" the icon by dragging it from the side bar.
having read some more about the function, i wish i hadn't !
any way (that does NOT involve reinstalling Mac OS X) of getting it back into its rightful place ?

  • Remote disc will never mount

I have two iMacs (running OS X 10.4.11) in addition to my MBA which I received yesterday. I installed the remote disc sharing program on both iMacs and enabled the required sharing on them. Although I can see the superdrive contents on the iMacs (ie, if I put in a CD titled "stuff", I see "stuff" and the icon on the MBA in the finder), I cannot access any content on them. They all time out eventually with a message that says "The operation cannot be completed because the original item "stuff" cannot be found." (Stuff is just an example; for instance, I'd like to install my iWork family pack on the MBA and in its case the name is "iWork '08 Install CD".) Regular file shares work fine.
Suggestions? Workarounds? This is simply unacceptable; I'd tell anyone interested in an MBA to hold off until this works reliably.

I appreciate everyone's input, believe me. I discovered, as others apparently have, that if I turn off the firewall on the 'host' machine, then remote disc sharing will work. *This is not acceptable.* I'd no more turn off the firewalls on all the machines on my home network than I'd go to work without pants on. Apple simply must fix this. Parenthetically I note, if someone knows which firewall ports need to be unblocked I'd take a stab at doing that manually.
Oh and just to note, it's not about the disk type; "homemade" data disks (CD or DVD), Apple iWork Family pack disk, same results.

  • Deleted Remote Disk icon from Finder...!

accidentally... with jittery hands... deleted my Remote Disk icon from the Finder window "Devices". How can I get it back? Where is "remote disk" located on the HD and can I bring it back into the Finder list?
    Help!!
    cheers,

    Hi Svans,
On my machine when I go into Finder > Preferences > Sidebar
I have the option to choose to make my Remote Disc available by checking the appropriate box.

I have an older 8GB black iPod Touch (no bluetooth) no longer supported by tech. It is "locked" in restore mode. When I do a 2 button reset I can get the Apple logo but then it pops back to the synch cord-and-music disc icon indicative of restore. Any advice?

    Hello honeycrisp70,
For that error, check out the article below for additional troubleshooting to get it sorted out. If it continues then you may need to contact Apple support.

Remote Disc Can't recognize Blank disc, but it does recognize other discs. I am trying to burn something from my itunes on my mac mini to a blank disc on my windows computer. What could be wrong?
I can see other discs such as music and stuff so I know I have installed it correctly but how come I can't see the blank disc that I need to burn?

You can't burn discs remotely, you can only read data discs remotely (i.e. you cannot play movie DVDs either).
Either copy the files to the remote computer or get an external drive.

  • ITunes import using Home Sharing and Remote Disc

I would like to import a music CD from my MacBook Pro to my MacBook Air using iTunes. I'm running the latest version of Mavericks (10.9.1) on both computers.
Here are the steps that I have followed:
Home Sharing is enabled on both computers
I load the CD into the Pro's optical drive, but tell it not to import to the Pro's library
On the Air, I select Add to Library, then select the Remote Disc
When the Pro appears, I select it
At this point, I can see that there is a disc loaded into the Pro and I select it, but the "Open" button remains grayed out
    What am I missing here?

I tried the same thing and got the same results as you. The reason the button is grayed out is that the operation is not supported directly.
"Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs."

  • Remote disc for Apple TV or other ways to steam DVD to Apple TV

With the new MacBook Air Apple introduce "Remote Disc" for sharing DVD/CD drives from another computer. Will this add on be added in Apple TV or how can I stream my DVD's to my Apple TV?

I have over 500 DVDs. I have neither the time nor disk space to make copies of them all. I want to grab a DVD from the shelf, stick it in a DVD drive, and watch it. I want to be able to rent a DVD, stick it in a drive, and watch it. I don't want to be forced to spend an hour copying it first. When Blue-Ray finally joins the free world and stops refusing to play because your entire playback path does not support end-to-end encryption as dictated by the movie companies, I will want to stick a Blue-Ray disk in a drive and watch it. And until AppleTV will do that, either on an internal drive or by network drive sharing, until it can REPLACE one or more of the boxes sitting under my TV instead of just adding another box to the mass, I really have no use for it.
don't buy it then, simple as that.

  • Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air. In bootcamp i allocate the partition then i click install and bootcamp will not see the disk.

Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (on my MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air via remote disk. In bootcamp (on my air) i allocate the partition, then i click install, and bootcamp will not see the disk from my macbook pro's drive. How do i get the bootcamp assistant running on my MB air to automatically find the disk in my macbook pro with the ISO image of windows 7? The remote disk on my air can find the cd but bootcamp will not begin installing it. Anyway to do this without buying the damned usb drive?

I don't know first hand if you can use the Remote Disk option with Windows but as of 10.7.2 you can now use BCAssistant to make a bootable USB (thumb drive or external disk) W7 installer with the Boot Camp drivers installed also. Have you tried that yet?

  • Help!  I transferred the data from my old Macbook pro with some success, but now my new Macbook Air contents think they are the remote disc and that the old Mac Pro is the hard drive.  What did I do and how do I fix it?

I transferred the data from my old 2006 MacBook Pro 17".  Thanks for the help on that.  I thought that I was doing it right.  Used a backup hard drive and time machine.  Problem:  Now my new macbook air thinks it is the old machine and that the remote disc is the mb air.  Clicks want to take things to mobile me instead of iCloud, old applications launch instead of the new ones.  How do I fix the mess I have made?  Like I said before,  I am a software user and don't really know what I am doing when I start into the guts of the software, but I am able to learn.  Thanks for any help.

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • MacBook Air problem with Remote Disc

I am trying to upload a disc to my MBA from a shared MBPro.  Remote Disc recognizes the shared MBP and the CD but cannot access the data.  Any suggestions?

Actually the restriction DOES apply to an audio CD.
    From this document:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2057
"MacBook Air and Mac mini do not support playing DVD movies or audio CD media with Remote Disc. In addition, some discs, such as game discs, may be copy-protected and are therefore unusable. To play DVD movies, audio CD media, or copy-protected discs on the MacBook Air or Mac mini, use the MacBook Air SuperDrive."

  • Remote disc in finder devices - can't remove it

I have a "remote disc" item in my finder under devices and cannot eject or remove.
    iMac, OS X Version 10.6.7
Background: I have 2 very old Compact Flash USB card readers (Intelliflash and ImageMate) and several Compact Flash cards that I wanted to view before trashing.
The remote disc showed up after plugging these in to my iMac. Could not access the cards and now I can't remove the remoted disc.
I have tried to use the Finder>Preferences>Sidebar to remove, but the remote disk is not included in the list (see screenshot below).
This doesn't seem to be causing any harm, just annoying...
    Any suggestions would much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chet

  • Remote Disc (Non-air macbook)

I understand they added DVD/CD sharing (remote disc) in 10.5.2, but how do I get this to work with a PC? (I haven't tried it w/ a mac either, I only have 1 mac and 2 PCs)
P.S. I know you may find this completely unnecessary, but I'm interested out of pure curiousity

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
have a look here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307141 and here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307317
Since the 'CD and DVD sharing' software for Windows is not avaiable standalone, but part of the MacBook Air OSX DVD, other Macs are currently left out.

  • Remote disc installation of CS3 fails on disc 2 of 2

I'm using a Mac Book Pro to install Adobe Creative Suite 3 - Web Premium, onto my Macbook Air, using the remote disc feature in Mac OSX.
The first installation disc (applications) installs and then it asks for the second disc (content) to be loaded - I insert the disc and wait a few seconds before clicking OK to continue but the message won’t go away.
Eventually I have to press Cancel and the installation fails. Tried this a few times now and I need to know if this is an Adobe or Mac OSX issue. Would be nice if Adobe could give me a direct download link for the software but they don't appear to support previous versions of CS.

In case you are able to copy contents of disc 2 to your local drive, then try performing a silent install. Or just create a local copy of installer (following Step1 and Step2) and run Setup from there.
