Remote file sharing questions

I'm trying to login to my G5, to share files, from a Macbook connected to the Internet via wireless (Airport Extreme card). It's not working, and I have a few questions. Help would be appreciated.
- I have a .mac account, and BTMM activated on both computers. Is this necessary for remote file sharing? IOW, what's the difference between using BTMM and using "File Sharing" in the Sharing panel?
- I'm trying to login using "connect to server" and the afp address of my G5. The address that shows in the G5 sharing panel is a variation of my router/modem's address. But there must be many other users with the same address--how does this work (the afp doesn't seem to be a unique IP address)?
- I've searched and haven't found a good site that describes in detail the differences between "file sharing" "remote login" "remote management" etc, and how to use them. Any suggesions?
If this helps at all, here's something I did in Terminal:
dns-sd -X udp 123 456 789
Timestamp if External Address Protocol Internal Port External Port TTL
19:01:49.410 0 0.0.0.0 16 123 0 0
Also, if anyone has suggestions on making my remote connection happen, I'd love to hear it. I'm trying to access files from my G5, and I'm away--this isn't a LAN.
thanks.

A couple more details: right now I'm near a Mac network, and I do see two Macs under the "shared" tab in my finder window. And when I was at home I could see my G5 there, and was able to log into it from my Macbook. Also, my G5 is set to never sleep.

  • Trouble with remote file sharing

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up an iMac here in my office so that it can be used for remote file sharing. I'm kinda new at this, so I'm sure I've missed a few obvious details.
First off, it's connected via AirPort and there's no direct ethernet connection...I was told this shouldn't be a problem, but let me know if this is false.
I think I have all the right settings on Leopard - file sharing's turned, remote login is enabled, firewall's opened up, and even though there's a dynamic ip address, I've set up a hostname at Dynamic DNS, and I also downloaded their Updater, which seems to be working fine and has been updating the ip address for the hostname I've set up.
I also went into the router and opened up a file sharing port (a different number than 548, FWIW).
So far, only computers within the same network have been able to access this iMac. Outside of the network, it can't be reached. Whenever you punch in the hostname (or even the ip address for that matter) in "Connect to Server...," it attempts to connect, but eventually fails. I can't even get to the login prompt.
What else needs to be done? Any ideas? FWIW, all machines are Macbook Pros or iMacs running the latest Leopard.

  • Simple Remote File Sharing over airport

    Hi,
I have two macs: 1) iMac and 2) MacBook Air.
I have airport turned on, remote file sharing turned on.
I have created a new network on my iMac, titled: Ben's iMac, with both computers joined to the network.
I can successfuly connect via SSH from my iMac to my MacBook, using the command supplied in System Preferences/Sharing/Remote Login:
    ssh [email protected]
However, I cannot connect from my MacBook to my iMac, using the equivalent command:
    ssh [email protected]
    The error I get is:
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
I have no idea how to proceed with this error message?

    arghhhhh norton!
Once I disabled norton's firewall I was good to go!

  • Personal File Sharing question

    Hi,
I have a question about personal file sharing between my iMac Intel (my work computer) and an eMac (student work computer). I work at a college, and our regular back-up system on campus is just not worthwhile, so as a secondary back-up, I created a new account on the eMac (the student computer). I have already successfully accessed the regular student account via personal file sharing (it shows up on the network under the office name given to the computer), but is there a way that I can also connect directly into my new account on the eMac? Is there something that I need to do to make the separate accounts visible?
    Thanks,
    Ken

I'll try to access this from a Windows PC from the internet first (then try with ubuntu)
That requires much more work, like finding Outside IP, Port Forwarding, etc., try it locally first.
    1) System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Windows Sharing.
    2) Browser won't get you to File Sharing, that would be for System Preferences>Sharing>Services tab>Personal Web Sharing.
    3) By default the Shared folder is shared, but you can log in as the Mac's User & see all that the Mac User can, or Sharepoints for smb...
    http://lowendmac.com/mac2win/04/0623.html
    Get Sharepoints...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
And setup what you wish to share with whom.

  • Remote file sharing

I am currently in USA and am trying to connect to my mac in UK to get a large file. I have followed the support page instructions but have been unable to connect. Any suggestions.

Hi - that really depends on your son's router. Every router that I know of has a webpage to do configuration stuff. Your son would access it by typing something like http://192.168.0.1 in Safari. If he looks in his System Preferences Network TCP/IP stuff, the IP address of the router as listed there is what he needs to use in place of my 192.168.0.1 example.
Once there, there are one, maybe three, things that he will probably have to do.
Step 1: First, he'll need to turn on file sharing in his Mac as discussed in my previous post. Then, he'll have to navigate his way to a "port forwarding" configuration webpage on his router. On my ActionTec all-in-one combo DSL modem + wired&wireless access point + router, I go into "Advanced Settings" then there is a link to "port forwarding." Once there, you would enter a port range of 548 to 548, protocol is TCP, and your son's computer's name or its intranet (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) IP address. Save changes and reboot router.
If it doesn't let him do that, it may be because the router doesn't track computers on its LAN by their ethernet port's or Airport wireless' MAC address, but rather by IP address, so it will only let him forward ports to machines that don't have a dynamically assigned IP address by the router. If that's the case, on to step 2:
Step 2: there should be a link in the advanced setup junk for DHCP Server in one of the router's configuration webpages. He should be able to set a range of DHCP-assigned IP addresses. Does this range of numbers run the whole gamut of the whole subnet? That is to say, if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, does the beginning and ending IP addresses run from, say, 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254? If so, restrict the range to something smaller, like 192.168.0.101 to 192.168.0.254. Note: Don't mess with the first three numbers if his are different than my example here, i.e., the 192.168.0 part, only change the last number. I will continue to use the 192.168.0 in my examples, for example only. Leave the subnet alone. Once he's made this change, save changes and reboot router.
In his Mac's System Preferences Network TCP/IP, choose "Using DHCP with manual address" and manually enter an IP address for his Mac. Using my example, choose something between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.100, i.e., something outside the DHCP assigned address range (BTW, x.x.x.254 is as big as the numbers can be, so he needs to pick something less than that x.x.x.101 number). Then apply the change.
If we even had to do step 2, we're getting close to finishing up now. Time for Step 3.
Step 3: Go back into the router's "port forwarding" configuration webpage. Now that he has a range of static IP addresses available (static are 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.100 since he specified the range of dynamic addresses to be 192.168.101 -192.168.0.254), he should be able to do Step 1 now.
Post file retrieval: Once you have successfully retrieved the file, your son needs to go back into the port forwarding configuration webpage and delete that port forward. People might disagree with me on this, but it is my understanding that AFP file transfers are not encrypted, so however unlikely, a sniffer at the right place at the right time could have intercepted your username and password and could then have AFP upload and download privileges with your son's computer. Or hack his way in via that open port and do other nasty stuff to him or to others, using his computer to do it. That's why I tunnel my AFP stuff through secure shell, in order to encrypt the username/password, and data transfer, but if you're not comfortable with Terminal.app, it might be perceived to be a bit daunting to set up.
Once the port forward is deleted, have him save changes in his router and reboot router. And your son should go back into his Mac's System Preferences Network TCP/IP, and choose "Using DHCP" (no longer with manual address) and apply changes. Also, he'll need to pay a visit to his System Preferences Sharing Services and uncheck the "file sharing" checkbox and make sure the firewall is still ON.
There is no harm in leaving the range of assigned DHCP addresses to be the x.x.x.101 to x.x.x.254 range in the router, unless your son has more than 154 computers and networked peripherals attached to his home LAN. However, if desired, he can go back to the DHCP Server configuration webpage and change it back to the way it was.
Also, I suppose it is possible that every time he reboots his router, that his ISP could conceivably assign him a new public IP address. He'll need to check that out and if it changes on him, he'll need to text IM you with the new public IP address. He can get it from http://whatsmyipaddress.com.
All this having been said, http://portforward.com/cports.htm can provide him with some guidance for forwarding ports on his specific make and model of router (if it is listed), although I don't see anything specific there for forwarding ports for Apple File Protocol, AFP, or port 548. So just pick something like Apple Remote Desktop and follow those general guidelines for your son's specific router, just don't use the port numbers they say, use port 548 for TCP instead.
And lastly, if your son's home network architecture looks like this:
internet<-->modem<--> (non-wireless) router<-->Airport Extreme base station or some other other wireless access point<-->computer,
    or like this:
        internet<-->modem<--> wired/wireless router<-->computer,
then if the above directions still aren't working for you, we're going to have to dig into likely mismatched configurations between those different devices.
So, did I just make your day or what?

  • Why can't there be a simple program to setup remote file sharing?

If someone wants to take a crack at getting my Time Capsule available remotely (off network over internet), I would appreciate it.
I am a graphic designer and use the other side of my brain. DNS, static IP, MAC address etc is very confusing.
I purchased a neat little app called Connect360 for Mac that automatically configures music/video sharing to Xbox360 from MacBook Pro. Evrything is automatic. Brilliant. If someone could do that to configure internet file sharing, it would be worth $$$$$$.
    Thanks

You cannot do a simple program with the multiplicity of internet connections, modem type, ISP types, authentication types. Also you notice that Apple decided everything should now happen from the cloud, so cancelled the mobileme service which did offer easier setup for something that is far more limited, at least for now.
Also please note there are fridge mechanics who fix fridges and car mechanics who fix cars. Photographers who make a living taking better photos than I can, and computer technicians who do network setups. If you don't fix your car or the washing machine.. why do you need to fix your internet networking?? Pay someone to do it.. but Steve said computers are easy and you got a false impression that everything should just plug together and work.. well it doesn't. Find a tame Computer tech and let him/her carry that part of your business. Spend your time doing what earns you money instead of in frustration at fixing the fridge. (Being symbolic of the computer network).
It is rather like when I (a computer technician) dabble in graphic design.. I do, and you laugh at the results.. !!
Please note I no longer work in that field because the pay is miserable, the customers ring up day and night and scream at you that the network is down and it is all your fault, and want you to spend an hour on the phone helping them. No service fee of course. You should on the basis of a single job, help connect their computer to the printer over the phone for an hour, rather than pay you a service call. Since computers are easy and you should just donate your time and life really to helping them do what Steve and Bill said was so easy.

  • Remote File Sharing via SSH-How to Set This Up the Easy Way

So, I have been trying to gain access to my office iMac from my MacbookPro at home via the "interwebs" but keep getting the same issue...can not connect. I have read umpteen forums and threads. All give similar advice or are too technical to follow. I thought we made it work yesterday by installing Macfusion. That works just fine if the Mac is on. It will not wake a sleeping Mac. Here is my settup.
    Home (MBP running 10.6)
    Network (Timecapsule)
    Office (27in iMac running 10.6).
I do have a static IP for the router.
Here is what I want to do. Access my "sleeping" iMac from a different network via Connect Server for File Sharing. I have all the appropriate file sharing buttons checked. I can access TC using the static IP but that's as far as it goes.
Is there a simple "Mac way" of doing this?
    Sincerely,
    Jim.
Ps. I am happy to invest in a trusted third-party software that will "ping" the network to wake my Mac unlike Macfusion which connects only to a running Mac.

Also check in System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Wake for network access is ticked

  • ITunes File Sharing question

I really like the reader, mainly because it's uncomplicated an uncluttered, but I'm having a problem with importing files into it. I opened a .pdf from an eMail with the option open with Adobe Reader and the file is now on the list in the iPad app. When I sync with iTunes the file is not listed in the file sharing section under the adobe reader app. Is it meant to be like this? I thought files imorted into the iPad app from email attachements would show up on that list under the corresponding app, that's the app you open the attachment with?
And since I'm already writing this, I'd like to second the feature request for additional organization options, like folder creation, file moving and renaming on the file list screen.
    Thanks!

File opened from email is stored in the Inbox folder of your app. itunes does not support browsing through the Inbox ( or any other folder). Hence, you did not find the file in the file-list.
Thanks for the feature request. We will try to add this functionality in the future release(s) of Adobe Reader.

  • Basic File Sharing question between user accounts on my iMac

I don't understand how to be able to share and download to one common folder among User Accounts on my iMac. I am trying to use a Clean Account as a test, and wanted to copy a file I downloaded from the web in one account into this clean account folder, and install the file.
I went to Sharing and thought I turn File Sharing on. Logged into the Clean account and Apple+I the folder, changing access priviledges to the folder. Then copy the file into the Clean User Account.
But it doesn't work that way. Can anyone help me understand sharing between accounts?

File Sharing is for sharing files between two different machines, not between different accounts on the same machine. If you want to share files on one machine, you just need to put them in a folder everyone has access to, like the /Users/shared folder. Also, don't go fooling around with folder permissions... that's a good way to mess things up. If I had a nickel for every time someone messed up their system using the "Apply to enclosed items" option when changing permissions, I'd be a rich man!

  • File Sharing questions

On a Macbook, I like to have file sharing available when home but I do not want to allow access when I am on a public wifi network. Is there a way to set this up without having to enable and disable the File Sharing service?
    thanks
    Ken

Remote Login allows you to ssh into the computer over port 22. You are logged in as a user and can do anything that user could do on the machine, via command line interface.
File sharing allows connections via afp (Apple Filing Protocol) or smb/cifs (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System)

  • File sharing question

I have been trying to set up file sharing so i can access my files on my g5 desktop, with my macboook.
I store my movies on my desktop (G5) and am planing to just run a cable to my living room since i have set my macbook to play movies on my TV. what is the best way to set this up, i have tryed doing it wireless and it just laggs and is a hassle to try to log in. so i bought a crossover ethernet cable but realized i only have one input on the back of my G5 and that is being used by my internet.
so what is the easiest painless way to set up file sharing in my preferences.
is their another cable i can transfer files through other then a ethernet maybe a usb, or firewire?
how would you go about simplifying you file transfers?
and can i set up my front row to recognize files shared from desktop, on my macbook?
    thanks for your feedback.

    hey thanks for your reply.
i think im going to attempt using a router and all the existing ethernet cables i have.
but once i have set up file sharing in system preferences, how do I access it? the other computer shows up in my finder menu but it never actually connects, it just says connecting......
even when i hit connect as it does nothing.

  • Trouble Remotely file sharing

Trying to set up file sharing on a buddy's computer. We have everything set up on the host computer… but we're having trouble logging into it. tried everything without anything working, including some VNC viewers. any recommendations as to best ways to approach the problem?

Kind of light on details there.
When you say 'tried everything', can you be more specific?
For example, what protocol are you trying to use? AFP? SMB? NFS? something else?
Are the machines on a LAN or are you trying to share files over the internet?
If over the internet, have you configure port forwarding on the router to allow incoming connections to get to the machine that's acting as a server?
You mention VNC... Why? VNC isn't a file sharing protocol it's a screen sharing protocol, so are you trying to file share or screen share?

  • Remote File Sharing Options - Server 2012 Standard

Looking for an option for file sharing outside of the office, other than having to use VPN. I know there is directaccess in 2012 standard, however, our machines are Windows 7 pro and machines are only bound to a workgroup, no domain. Trying to
find alternatives as we want to utilize a cloud server for company file sharing.  Let me know if there are any options out there.
    Thanks, Bob

Yeah, this is for business.  So we need a shared solution, ftp is not an option and I we do have office 365 which I believe includes onedrive.  The problem is, we need something simple with granular permissions.  I don't think any cloud service
offers anything simple as mounting a drive with granular permissions.  Dropbox doesn't have it and I don't think any Microsoft services has it either.

  • Simple file sharing question. Bug?

How do I simply add or edit a file using File Sharing or FTP to the Sites directory to serve a web page?
In Snow Leopard I was able to edit a page from another Mac and save the file. In Lion any pages edited via File Sharing/FTP cannot be displayed any more.
If I edit the page locally the page saves and can be displayed.
If I edit the page via File Sharing/FTP (logging on as the same user) a permissions error is displayed in the browser.
