Remote host ftp error dw8 and Mac OS X using airport

I'm learning PHP at a local tech school and can put files and
can connect to my SQL database at the school using DW CS3 and Win
XP. I have a wired connection at school. However, when I try to
work on my site at home on my Mac using OS X 10.4.11 and DW8 I
receive the error: "An FTP error occurred cannot make connection to
host. The remote host cannot be found.
I'm am using passive ftp in dw8 and in my network preferences
on my Mac. I've double checked my settings for the site definition
and cannot find anything wrong. I'm using the same site definition
at school and at home. Since I can connect at school I think it may
be a problem with my firewall and airport. FTP on port 21 is
allowed under firewall preferences.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am thoroughly
confused!

If you home is not on the same network as your school I'm
surprised you can
connect via Transmit because 10.4.11 is not a valid IP
address. Addresses
starting in the 10.0.0.0 -> 10.255.255.255 range are in a
reserved block

Open up your site definition (double-click on the site name in the File panel or choose Site > Manage Sites > Edit) and go to the Remote Info category. There, click Use Firewall (if it isn't already selected) - press Test to try the default firewall settings. If that doesn't work, click Firewall Settings. You'll see two relevant settings about 2/3 down - Firewall host and Firewall port. If Firewall port is 21, there probably is something blocking the port.
On Windows XP, you may have the Windows Firewall installed and blocking. Here's how you get to it:
To open Windows Firewall
1.
Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2.
In the control panel, click Windows Security Center.
3.
Click Windows Firewall.
Once you have that open, you'll need to set Dreamweaver as an exception to blocking:
On the Exceptions tab, click Add Program.
In the list of programs, click the name of the program (Dreamweaver) that you want to add, and then click OK. If the name of your program is not in the list of programs, click Browse to locate the Dreamweaver.exe in the Program Files folder and then click OK.

Hello, you should be able to if they're running the same version of Word.
When you log into the Desktop for File Sharing from the MBP, use the Desktop's Username & Desktop's Password, & vice versa if logging into the MBP from the Desktop.

FTP Error in Dreamweaver (mac)

I have a site that I can connect to on my Dreamweaver/Windows, but not on Dreamweaver/Mac.
I have the settings identical as far as I can tell and it immediately gives me an error that says:
An FTP error occured - cannot make conection to host.
No response from server. This may be due to one or more of the following reasons:
-Proxy... etc...
-Use Passive... etc...
-IPV6.... etc...
-Firewall etc...
-Port 21 etc...
None of these apply except for Passive and I have set it both ways with no joy.
I can use FTP from Firefox on my Mac with the same settings and it works fine.

Fixed.
I am using Dreamweaver CS5.5 on Snow Leopard and am having the same FTP problems.
After trying to uninstall and reintall Dreamweaver CS5.5 with no luck I was able to solve my issue by leaving the "Root Directory" field of the FTP server configuration BLANK.
My hosting provider (justhost) allows you to specify the FTP path when you create a FTP accounts. That is where I specify the "root dir" path and not in DW ftp server config.

Webfusion host & FTP error

My problem:
I'm trying to launch my first ever website, created in DreamWeaver, via DreamWeaver's FTP onto my Webfusion shared server linux host account. I am unable to connect to Webfusion's server. I do not know whether the problem lies:
with me putting in the information incorrectly into the Site Definition boxes, or
(as Webfusion suggest) a DreamWeaver problem or
a Webfusion problem.
I would appreciate help from any other member who uses both DreamWeaver and Webfusion regarding how to input my information in the Site Definition boxes and how to get connected.
What I've tried to do:
I've followed the advice in my "Adobe DreamWeaver CS4 Classroom in a Book" where it (not very well) explains how to set up a remote FTP site and I've got an error message: "An FTP error occured - cannot make connection to host. The remote host cannot be found". Trying to connect to the host server (using the Test button) is also causing a problem in my personal configuration folder, which I've managed to sort out using David Powers' post dated June 4 2002 http://forums.adobe.com/thread/417116?tstart=0#cache'.
I've searched Webfusion's support site for help in completing the boxes in DreamWeaver's Remote info section of the Site Definition box, but their article seem to contradict Adobe's advice. I've also spoken to Webfusion's help desk. The guy I spoke to gave me some help (as he used DreamWeaver himself) but he told me that he shouldn't help me on this problem as the company did not help on third party software problems. He did reset my password as he thought that that could be a problem. The reset has not helped.
Details:
I'm hesitating over putting the information I have in my Remote info boxes in this post as I don't really understand (with the exception of the username and password) how much of the information is personal to me and therefore shouldn't be posted here.
Any help would be gratefully received as I am really stuck.

Since I posted my query I've tried using Webfusion's online file manager (per Webfusion's help article) but was not able to upload my files.
I've also tried to connect again via DreamWeaver using your post below, although I am not sure what to put into the Login name box. Your post says: [email protected], but my username is longer than just the domain name (is this because my domain name is not via Webfusion/123-reg, but another domain name provider?). It is in the following form: [email protected] Does this mean that in the Login box I should enter:
ftp@[email protected], or
[email protected]

together with the other information in your post. I've left the 'Use passive FTP' box checked (as per your colleague on the help desk) and I've unchecked the 'Use FTP performance optimization' box in the Server Compatibility box (as per DreamWeaver's suggestion when experiencing problems). I've left in and then taken out the Host Directory: public_html. I've still no joy via DreamWeaver.
Current position:
Today I've used FireFTP and (finally) managed to connect to the server. My files are now on the Webfusion server, but I can only view the site if I use the address given to '..view your content whilst your domain is configured at..' in my confirmation email. I get a 'Problem loading page' message if I search for my website via my domain name. I would be grateful if you could explain what I do next to sort this out.
I would also prefer to use DreamWeaver's FTP so any further help you can give on the login name box and why it's still not working for me would be appreciated.

Want to setup FTP server on Mac 10.6 using Airport Express

I am wondering if it is possible to use my mac as a FTP server with Airport Extreme. When I connect my mac directly to cable modem I could get an unique address for the mac. However, when I connect via Airport Extreme the address was changed to 10.0.1.3. This address can be used only in the same LAN but not from the outside.

You should be able to configure your AirPort Extreme to map the FTP ports to your Mac. In AirPort Utility put the AirPort Extreme into "manual setup" mode, then select the "Advanced" panel and the "Port Mapping" tab.
To make this work well you should first assign a "reserved" IP address to your Mac using the Internet panel, DHCP tab, "DHCP Reservations" section.

Error -61 and -43 When Exporting using Quicktime

I have recently began receiving errors when I try to export using QuickTime. When I try to export to my external hard drive I get an error -61. When I try to export to Documents I get an error -43
These errors began after I had imported a bunch of home videos yesterday which were pretty massive and filled up my hard drive. I then began to delete some of my videos from my Event Library and Projects that I no longer needed.
It was after I did this that I began to experience these errors.
Any tips, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

How are you deleting your movies to free up disk space? Are you doing them in iMovie by rejecting them? If so, that's only 1/2 of what you need to do. In the event where you deleted movies, from the pop-up menu at the bottom of the events, choose "Show rejected only" . Then click the button that says "Move rejected to trash" in the top right. You then have to empty your system trash to free up the space.
Lemme know if that works.

Question about transfering files between windows OS and mac OS when using bootcamp

I'm thinking about buying the latest macbook pro, however, many of the statistical programs I use are only compatible with windows OS. I am aware of fusion and parallels, but I was advised to use bootcamp to maximize the performance of both the statistical programs AND the macbook itself. When using bootcamp, if I were to create a word document for my statistical output in the windows 7 partition, would I be able to access it directly from the hard drive in the mac OS partition using windows for mac? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I run both Windows and OS X on my Mac. I would never ever want the Windows partition to have write access to my OS X partition. Be cautious when considering this ability. I would much prefer sharing files by a third drive, be it a flash drive, and external HDD, NAS, or an SD card.

Error 9672 when trying to print using airport extreme

I have just purchased a new imac running os x 10.5.1 and an airport extreme base station. I have a canon pixma mp530 printer and have on occasions successfully printed using the printer with the airport extreme but it has been inconsistent and I have never been able to locate the printer drivers in the utilities folder. So I thought I would download the latest drivers located in the canon website claiming that they were os x 10.5.1 compatible. Now I am unable to add the printer to my printer list in the finder as I get a 9672 error message and my screen freezes and I still have no printer in the utility folder. I have a ibook running tiger and the printer when connected to both the ibook and the imac using a firewire works perfectly. Has anyone else had these problems using a printer wirelessly or is there something I am missing. The internet works with base station with no problems.

Despite being a total newbie, I good the damned thing to work--At least for now.
I first unplugged the airport and then the printer. Plugged them both back in and then went to Canon's site to redownload the drivers. Restarted the Macbook pro and to my astonishment it worked. Again, at least for now.....

Compatible Wireless and USB Printer Lists using AirPort Extreme

Long night researching this issue. I bought a new AirPort Extreme (802.11n) yesterday and I LOVE IT. Very fast and no lag whatsoever. Then I tried to setup our printer via the USB port and BAM - issues.
Here is a short summary of what I learned (thanks to all the guys who posted a lot of this info on separate posts)
- Unfortunately not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. - The AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.

I believe most retail printers that use Postscript, PCL3, PCL4, PCL5 and PCL6 interfaces should work.
I learned the hard way that printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to the computer directly and will not work via the AirPort Extreme USB port.

Remember that when you attach a USB printer to the AirPort, the AirPort will perform the function of a Print Server. As you can imagine, if the server cannot locate the printer (for whatever reason), it will treat it as unavailable and not attempt to share it out.
However, like you expect, you wouldn't have to restart a dedicated print server, and thus, you shouldn't have to do the same with the AirPort. Of course, anything is possible.
I would suggest a couple of things to see if they would help: 1) Even though you have a single printer attached, I would suggest in investing in a powered USB hub. Plug the hub into the USB port first, and then, the printer into the hub. You can then power cycle the printer as required. 2) Completely remove the printer and associated printer drivers that were installed and reinstall it.

I Have "New" MBP (Mid 2009) and Would Like to Use Airport Extreme

This might be a very basic question , but I do not know the answer so I came to some experts for help. I have a "new" MBP OS 10.6.4 SL. I received it about 1 month ago after the genius bar could not fix a 3 year-old MBP. At one time the Airport Extreme was hooked up when I first got the 3-year-old MBP, but I kept running into troubles with it so I purchased a Verizon MiFi2200.
I have this new MBP, I still have the MiFi2200 from Verizon which I access via Airport. I would like to try the 3 year-old Airport Extreme again, but I am wondering if having the Verizon MiFi2200 will allow me to also have the Airport Extreme. Also, I am wondering if this Airport Extreme is too old for what is currently available (and if it is secure enough). I would need to get help from Applecare. I tried once, when I first started having trouble with it, and it was way beyond my ability. I think I made things worse and I hope I did not do any hardware damage. I tried to set it up, after having it disconnected for about 2 years, and I did not call applecare.
So I am wondering if I can have the MiFi2200 installed by VZAccessManager (but turned off when I use the Airport Extreme) and the 3 year-old Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station set-up at the same time. Also, is this model still OK to use (I really have no idea how long something like this Airport Extreme is good to use), and if I can use it, are there online instructions to set it up or would it be best to get Applecare's help. I would also like to know how I could find out if there have been any firmware updates or other updates for this Airport Extreme since it was last used (about 2 years ago)

OK, I am not following you exactly and I guess it is important to know what the existing set-up is like. Maybe you will understand my amateurish language. Before I moved in to this condo, the manager of the complex asked me if I need to use the ethernet ports in the rooms or will I be setting up a wireless connection. I said, for now I will be using the ethernet ports in the rooms of the condo. She said Ok, I will be up to your condo to put in a modem. (She could have said router or modem, I am not sure if there is a difference, but I do know the Airport Extreme is considered a router.) She opened this box that is on the wall while she said this is where the "T1" line comes into your condo, and T1 (I think I have the right term she used) is the fastest way to get around the internet. In the box in the wall is an electrical outlet (which the tiny blue modem (I will call this a modem because I am not sure what it is) is plugged into. In the back of the tiny blue modem are 5 ethernet ports and that is all, except for the power cord which connects to the side of the tiny blue modem. In the box, already screwed into place is a CAT5 ethernet strip, for lack of a better term that has 12 ethernet ports but only 4 are actually marked. I think the four that are marked are the ones that can be used, if I needed this many, but I am only using 3 and the ethernet cable goes from one of the ethernet ports on this CAT5 strip which is connected to the T1 line, and one of the 3 ethernet cables goes from the back of the tiny blue modem to one of the ethernet ports on this CAT5 strip (one that is marked as previously described) So I can hook up to the internet by using one of the 3 ethernet plugs in the various rooms of the condo or I can use the MiFi2200 from Verizon for a wireless connection. I have already told you why I prefer not to use the Verizon MiFi2200 and why I would like to set-up my Airport Extreme.
As far as wanting to use the existing ethernet ports in the 3 rooms, I do not care about that unless the Airport Extreme does not work. The manager who initially hooked up the tiny blue modem said if I want a wireless connection I do not need the tiny blue modem. If I do want to use the ethernet ports in the rooms via an ethernet cable, I need the tiny blue modem. If this is tru or if I can have one and not the other, I really did not get a sense I could or could not have both a wireless and ethernet connections at the same time.
Why would I want to plug the 3 or 4 ethernet cables that go from the tiny blue modem to the ethernet strip? The ethernet strip has about 10 ethernet ports, 3 of which are marked and I assume only those 3 can be used since there are only 3 actual ethernet ports in the walls in various room for connection.
I know this is a different set-up but when I used the Airport Extreme before, I had a cable come in to my house from Comcast which was hooked up to a modem. One ethernet cable went from the modem to the back of the Airport Extreme which after Applecare helped me set up the Airport Extreme the whole house was wireless.
In this condo, which is smaller than the house I had, why do I need all 3 ethernet cables to go from the CAT5 strip to the back of the Airport Extreme? Again, on the 12 port CAT5 strip, only 3 are labeled with some code, and those 3 go out to the wall ethernet ports.

Does windows and mac run continuously using parallel, or is there some way to stop xp from running if you are not using it?

I would like to run a few windows programs but I dont want the mac side to suffer when i am not using the windows os. Is there some way to shutdown the windows part when you are not using?

If you are running MS Windows in Parallels or Fusion or any other virtualization software you can shut it down while the machine is operating and still run OS X. There is no trick, you shut down MS Windows just like you would with any other MS Windows machine. That is one of the main advantages of virtualizaiton software, the ability to run both environments simultaneously if you want. If you don't want to run Windows then simply don't start the virtualizaiton software or if it's already running quit it like you do any app on a Mac.

Several PC and Mac connectivity issues with Airport Extreme Base Station

This is not all necessarily airport base station related, but there is some crossover, so I'm posting all of these issues...
Here is the laundry list of things that I can't make work in a home network that contains a PC w/ XP Home, MacBook 1.83 w/ 10.4.7, and Airport Extreme Base Station w/ Modem.
1. Can't see the PC from the Mac.
a. "Connect to server -> Browse" does not find the PC
b. "ipconfig" on PC provides valid looking IP address
c. ping from mac to PC IP address times out
d. Firewall on XP is disabled via control panel
b. Windows file and printer sharing is enabled
2. Can't see mac from PC
a. Windows file sharing enabled on mac
b. Firewall on mac disabled
c. I used \\MacIPAddr\shortusername
d. ping times out
3. Using dial-up to access internet, how do i tell airport to dial using PC?
a. this feature is working fine from mac
b. If already connected (via instruction from mac), can surf the internet fine from PC
c. Is this even possible from the PC?
4. Can't see printer connected to base station from PC
a. See it fine from mac
b. How do i "find" the printer on the PC?
c. Is Bonjour required for this? (I don't have it on the PC yet)
5. Can't see a "shared" printer on the PC from the mac
a. printer is connected directly to PC
b. Mac's add printer wizardry looks like it may "see" the printer, but then it asks for username and password for PC. This is XP home, with no usernames or passwords. Single user. Nothing seems to work in the credentials pop-up dialog.
Any suggestions on any of these issues is very welcome.
