Remote install on ubuntu system

I have an Ubuntu system, and for fun, I want to try to do an ssh based install of arch. I followed the guide on the wiki, but the bootstrap script doesn't appear to be valid for the current state of arch. I found a "Newer"(https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Archbootstrap) script but it didn't "appear" to install everything correctly. So basically I'm looking for either a up-to-date bootstrap script, or even better a guide on how to bootstrap it manually. I would call myself an intermediate user, but I'm a beginner when it comes to advanced install techniques.
Thanks in advance

I think remote install utility works only with MB Air and Mac mini server.
Well, something sure doesn't seem to work. I've just tried every variation I can think of (both wired & wireless) with my iMac 24" as the source computer & my 2008 MacBook as the target while using Remote Install Mac OS X & no matter what I try, the MacBook does not see the Snow Leopard disc in the iMac as a startup option. Both computers are running 10.6.2 & all Apple software on them is up to date.
In fact, following the instructions on page 2 for upgrading using another computer’s optical drive, I don't even see the "Remote Disc under Devices in a Finder window sidebar" it says I should see in step 5. CD & DVD Sharing is on & "green" for both computers.
Now that I think about it, I'm not sure CD & DVD Sharing ever worked as indicated, even when both Macs were running Leopard. I could play a DVD movie in one Mac's drive on the other Mac, but only if I launched DVD Player & navigated to it as a shared item. It never appeared in the "Devices" section of the Finder sidebar. (And yes, I have the Finder set to show all DVD's, CD, & HD's in the sidebar.)
I wonder if anybody else besides MB Air & Mini server users is getting better results. Anybody care to comment?

  • Where to download and how to install X Window System for Oracle Linux 5 ?

    Folks,
Hello. I am using Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Database 11g for PIA.
Before install Oracle DB 11g into Oracle Linux 5, we need to install X Window System according to the document page 2 http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32285.pdf
But I don't know where to download and how to install X Window System for Oracle Linux 5.
Can any folk provide a link to download X Window System and tutorial to install it for Oracle Linux 5 ?

You can address the problem in a number of different ways.
You can install X-windows from the installation DVD or setup access to the Oracle public software repository as described in http://public-yum.oracle.com. In which case, the command to install X-windows is: yum groupinstall "X Window System"
Or, you login remotely and and use SSH with X-forwarding, in which case the software on the server will use the X-Windows server on your client system. This is probably the preferred way since you do not have X-windows installed on the server. For more details about SSH forwarding and howto, please see Install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (64-bit) Howto part 2 Oracle Universal Installer.

  • Remote install OS X on Mac Mini (sans disk drive)

I wanted to sell my Mac Mini so I went through the process of deleting the harddrive using that command-r screen on load up. But I completely forgot about re-installing the operating system. So now I get the blinking folder icon when it boots.
How do I re-install OS X? Is there a way to remote install it? I can't seem to find any information online.
My Mac Mini  is a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5, 2GB RAM, 500 GB HD. It lacks the DVD drive so that option is not available.
    Thanks.

It is called "Internet Recovery", this might be of some help.

  • Remotely monitor my CCTV system using my Mac

I am in the process of installing a CCTV system at my house with a VXM4 DVR Hard drive recorder. It is very straight forward to remotely monitor the system using a PC with an internet connection, but I can't seem to do it using my Mac. I desperately don't want to use a PC to do this. Does anyone know how I can do it using my MAC. Thank you.

    Welcome to the Apple boards.
Does your camera/recorder itself connect to the internet? Some do and all you need to do is browse to the IP address it is set for, just like any other website.

  • Installing two Different Systems

I posted this previously but my question was not very clear so I'll restate it (hopefully ) better.
I have a dual 1gig G4. I want to run Tiger for my daily work and keep 10.5 on the machine for when I am not DJing. Right now Leopard crashes in the middle of a set and I have lost remote control on both my Macally and Keyspan triggers. What I wanted to avoid was losing my playlists, Having to reimport my music which has metadata stored with BPM, Genres etc. When I have changed my system previously all that time intensive work has failed to make the migration.. I DO NOT want to run them simultaneously. Can you install both operating systems then open applications in which ever system I booted from OR do I need two separate Applications folder. It seems that at most I would need two Libraries but not duplicate apps. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks how would I know?I really need only two apps in 10.5 Traktor & Mac Ally keypoint. oh yeah plus iTunes but the issue is would I need to recreate all my iTunes notes, playlists or bpm info? That would be the dealbreaker

  • Remote install OSX fails on MacBook Air (late 2008)

I'm trying to reinstall OSX on my old MacBook Air so I can sell it and upgrade to the new one. I have done this procedure before, but now it doesn't complete. When I reboot the Air holding down the option key, it reboots and gives me a choice of using the internal disk or the remote disk, and I choose the remote. It does not give me any further options (like the optional installs, disk utility, etc) and appears to run, but it winds up just rebooting as my old user as if I were just rebooting the machine instead of doing a reinstall.
I've done it several times (like 20!!) trying slightly different things each time. The only difference is that sometimes it doesn't recognize the remote disk and I have to start again. I've also tried partitioning the Air hard drive, but it won't partition, and I've tried making a disc image of the OSX CD on an external drive and booting from there, but it is not recognized as a viable startup disc (the DMG is fine tho).
I've also tried resetting factory settings cmdoption+shiftpower, and resetting the PRAM, cmdoption+PR. That didn't help either.
I spoke to an Apple rep on the phone who didn't know what else to do, but suggested that there may be something to do with the fact that the Air is running Snow Leopard (which I don't have the discs for right now) and the original bootup discs are OS 10.5 (Leopard).
Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to sell the thing unless I have erased all my old user info--this should be pretty simple and straightforward, taking less than an hour to complete, but so far I have spent over 12 hrs on it!

I finally got this to work, so I thought I'd share the specifics for posterity... the fix was dependent on one or both of the following two steps:
    1. Grasping at straws, I switched from the 10.6 install disc back to the 10.5 "MacBook Air" install disc, but obtained exactly the same result as previously.
    2. Finally, I reset the PRAM / NVRAM by turning the machine off and booting with the command-option-p-r keys held down.
As soon as the MBA began the reboot cycle that follows the PRAM reset, I held down the option key again, to take another stab at the Remote Install process that failed so many times before. Only this time it worked. I'm not sure if it was step #2 only, or #1 and #2 in conjunction that did it, but I'm not going to sink another several hours into the experimental determination.
Just to be clear about what was happening before the fix: Like Passion.LY, I would boot the MBA while holding the option key (and with the Remote Install app running on the other machine, DVD sharing enabled, etc.), and that would at least get me to the network selection screen. After successfully joining the network, the remote install disc would appear, and I would select it. Some very tentative "seek" noises would be emitted from the optical drive across the room, while the MBA displayed the Apple logo screen for about a minute (with a spinning globe icon instead of the usual twirl icon). Then, very quickly and almost imperceptibly, a large "slashed circle" symbol (of the sort that would indicate "no" or "prohibited" on signage) would flash on the screen, followed by the standard Apple logo / twirl icon -- as the system proceeded to boot from the hard drive as though nothing else had been done.
Success was obvious when instead of the the "no" symbol I was treated to a much louder sequence of optical drive access sounds, for the duration of a rather lengthy boot process.
All this for a few minutes in disk utility... Apple should really consider making a small recovery partition part of the standard OS install -- or at least put one in for MBA users -- whose shared optical drives that feel especially "remote" (and ephemeral) at times like this, and who can no longer fall back on Firewire target disk mode... Nostalgic stuff, that.

  • Kernel panic during remote install

i have a mac book air 13 inch from 2008 that upon start up shows kernel panic. i tried everything to get it to run again but to no avail. i decided to reinstall snow leopard, but i lost the usb drive that has it. Using a snowleopard disk from my imac, i tried remote installing over my wireless network. after booting the macbook using the option key and clicking on the snow leopard install disk, it starts to install, but right after showing the spinning globe and the apple symbol the macbook air kernel panics again and tells me to restart the computer. other than bringing the air into the apple store for repair, what else can i do?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Can I re-install "Remote Install" please!!

I bought a Mini Mac Server about 9 months ago...  it's been working well. I recently purchased a full domain name and want to re-load the server from scratch rather than trying to go through all the settings one by one to get everything working with the right privileges.
    Here's my problem.
I upgraded all our desktop and laptop macs to Lion. Seems Lion doesn't have "Remote Install" in the Utilities folder.... and the server has no keyboard, mouse, optical drive or monitor... it just has two hard disks and some flashing lights.... no joy there.
It seems like a backward step not having remote install as part of the package... and the Lion Server is fully crap by comparison to OS X Snow Leopard Server.
Is there a utility or something I am missing or is this a complete oversight on Apple's behalf?
    Thanks
    Gaz

    Thanks Eric,
That was interesting. I attempted something like that first... and it might work if a ghost of the operating system install disk was installed on the server...  As I have no USB optical drive, the Server shares a drive from an imac quite happily. So, I tried to use screen sharing and run the disk from the shared optical drive... It rebooted the server.... but at the log in screen on screen sharing... I was logged back into the old set up. No joy.
Besides... I'm not loading Lion Server.... I'm trying to reload Snow Leopard Server remotely from a Lion enabled iMac.... It was possible before Lion... and now it seems isnt possible unless I go and purchase some more hardware (an optical drive and monitor) just for this occasion.

  • Can I remote install OSX 10.6?

I am looking at purchasing a used Macbook Pro 1,1 for $400.  It's an intel Core Duo 2GHZ with 1GB RAM.  The CD Drive is broken (there is a small dent on the side and the seller says he dropped the MBP and from that dent forward the drive no longer functioned).  Overall the computer is in good shape besides this dent.
My question is a two parter: I have a MBP myself and an iMac.  Can I somehow remote install Snow Leopard (and Lion when it comes out) with the install disc?
And two: is $400 worth this?
    Thanks!

Yes it's possible to get OS X onto a Mac without a Superdrive.
What you need to do is get a powered external drive and another Mac that's the same make and model, use it to Disk Utility format HFS+ Journaled the external drive.
You can use the Snow Leopard retail disks and another different Mac possibly, no free iLife (that only comes on the disks with the comptuer).
Then c boot off the installer disks that come with the Mac (either one will do) install OS X onto the external drive and reboot holding option. You select the external drive to boot from.
Then you setup the accounts, and software update fully, download the free/donationware Carbon Copy Cloner to this external OS X drive.
Now take this external drive to the broken Mac and reboot holding option, if everything works then your good to go ahead and clone that external drive to the internal drive of the broken Mac and set it as the startup disk in system prefs.
There is also a way to install OS X onto a Flash thumb drive however I haven't researched it.
Also OS X Lion is downloaded and installed via the MacAppStore, no disks. So you won't have to worry about that, but you need to update CCC for Lion so it will clone it. Lion will have a recovery partition on the drive, so it's even easier to repair.
Lion won't run on the following Intel based machines.
    iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 17"
    iMac 4,1 Early (Jan-Sept) 2006 20"
    iMac 4,2 Mid (July-Sept) 2006 17"
    Mac Mini 1,1 (Feb-Sept) Early 2006
    Mac Mini 1,1 (Sept-Aug) Late 2006
    MacBook 1,1 13" (May-Nov 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1150 (Jan-May 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,2 17" A1151 (Aprl-Oct 2006)
    MacBook Pro 1,1 15" A1175 (May-Oct 2006)

  • Rebooting Tiger on my G4 with either remote install or firewire

Ok, so after help from all of you, I was able to get my hands on the install disc for Tiger 10.4 for my G4. I am preparing for a world of mess as nothing seems to be easy with this laptop lately. I have tried with an old panther disc to see what the remote install would do but when I load up the laptop under the special mode, I don't see the install disc option, only my imac on the screen. I am hoping this was because it was a panther disc and not compatible.
Assuming I have the correct disc(s) in my mailbox, any recommendations for the easier way to install them? I have an iMac and have had alot of difficulty with the network and file sharing, etc. Perhaps the firewire would be easier?
I have the link saved from Texas mac man (i think) about how to install using firewire but perhaps some tips!?
Thank you from an inspired mac geek-wanna-be with big plans!

You shouldn't have trouble with the internal optical drive booting the installer just by deleting some folders. Use the startup manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287 to boot the installer.
The only reason that wouldn't work is if there is something physically wrong with the optical drive. Reinstalling the operating system won't fix the optical drive, but may fix access to the optical drive when the operating system is already installed from the operating system on the hard drive. The optical drive access before you reach the hard drive is independent on the boot process.
I don't recommend target disk mode installs, unless the Mac you are installing from is the same vintage Mac and model.

  • Freezing when trying to remote install

I can't successfully complete a remote install of my installation disk because every time I have less than an hour left (I'm doing it over wireless so it takes awhile) the pinwheel on the airbook starts spinning and it freezes at whatever time it has left. Because I have to abort the installation, I can't even access the hard drive anymore - I just get a folder with a question mark when I turn the computer on.

    loniboni,
The folder with the question mark would indicate that the boot sequence cannot find a valid operating system to boot to, as it's failing on the remote install. A couple things...
1.) Is it always failing at the same point during the install? Try it again, but bring up the installer log (Command + L key) during the install. Change the view option drop down box to "show everything." Be curious to see if it's failing a specific point (or file).
2.) How reliable is your WiFi network? From my experience, on my own Air is that my connection can sometimes be a little "bursty" (for lack of a better word) due to outside interference. At times for whatever the reason I'll get a very slow connection only to immediately ramp up to a very fast connection and back again. It's possible that some packet loss on the installer would occur here and cause the whole process to time out and fail.
Do you have access to a USB to Ethernet adapter? Do you have access to the Super Drive? Or to an Apple Retail Store? Taking the slower (and potentially problematic) WiFi connection out of the equation might really be the best end result.

  • How can I install on a system w/RAID?

I know now that Boot Camp will not install on a system with RAID (in my case mirrored drives). THis is a major bummer as I need to run an engineering program and it only operates in Windows. So I either stick to my less than optimal laptop or I figure a way to use the power of my desktop.
So any suggestions? Can I somehow use an external drive and install boot camp and WinXP there? What if I converted one set of mirrored drives to two separate drives (with an external backup system) and leave one set of mirrored drives (I have two sets of mirrored drives) and install boot camp there? Am I talking about a complete redo of my system?
I need a straight forward solution (and no I don't want to buy a PC to run the software). Also the engineering software will not run in Parallels - it needs full access to the Video system (in my case a Quadro FX4500).
    THanks for any suggestions.

It isn't a problem. I assume also that you don't have the Apple Pro RAID card, and that you have one drive bay that you can install Windows.
All you need to do is open Disk Utility, format a internal SATA drive as MBR and then create one or more FAT partitions. You can change FAT to NTFS later.
Then choose the OS of your choice (XP Pro x64 drivers aren't included or well supported, so I'd go with Vista x64 Business or Ultimate SP1).
No external booting. At least not without a bootable PCIe controller. There are RocketRAID cards that do support RAID in Windows but haven't tried creating bootable Windows. Maybe next week.
With a new raw unformatted drive, all you have to do is boot from Windows and select the drive.
You can also use the ODD ports to use for OS X for two of your drives because Windows can't see or use them.
