Remote Installation of Solaris 10 on Sparc machine..

Hello all..
I have a Sun V240 box that has Solaris 8 currently installed on it. I need to wipe out the whole box and do a Fresh install of Solaris 10.
Problem is, that box is in the server room, and is not connected to any monitor, nor do it have any graphic card.I have only SSH access to the box from my Windows Desktop to do regular Admin operations.
How do i install Solaris 10( i got Solaris 10 on a DVD disk) on that box, that has no monitor and no graphic card. ?
Also, i do have a Sun V100 Desktop machine at my desk, that i use sometimes to connect to this Solaris Server.
any help is appreciated.
thanks
Ram

You could use 'live upgrade' to upgrade the system while it's still running, but you'd need extra disk space for that.
Or you could attach via the serial console and communicate with it that way to run the install.

Since that's not show, it is having problems reading the media. It could be an incompatibility with your hardware, or it could be a bad disk or burn.

  • OEM GC 10g Installation using Solaris 10g (Not SPARC but Intell Based Serve

    Hi !
Server: Dell Poweredge 2900 (Intell Chip).
    OS: Solaris 10 x86-64
I could not find from OTN Oracle Download site the Full/Complete Software (OMS, OMR, OMA) as is available for SPARK, Windows, Linux, HP-UNIX Operating Systems. Where can I get it? I do not want An Agent on my Server and the rest of the software on some other computer. i want it all (Full/Complete) to be installed on my DELL Server. Is there a work around if the sofofware not available. What about OEM GC software for SPARK? Will it work on Solaris 10 X86-64 also?
    Please reply.
    Thanks.

    Hm
all that depends on your original installation.
Usually, on Unixes, Oracle puts some "configuration" files under /var/opt/oracle
Assuming on your original server the Oracle install (=ORACLE_HOME) is under
    /oracle/ora10g
then you need to copy everything !! into the same directory of your secondary server (and of course this can be a zone)
In a standard oracle environment the database instance related files are under
    $ORACLE_HOME/dbs
here you find the spfile, the pfile, the passwd file which you need to start your instance
At least you should have the same user and group id for the owner and group on the secondary server (best would be the same
patches installed), and you should do a relink of the Oracle software ($ORACLE_HOME/bin/relink all)
as the Oracle user owning the software.
Furthermore the /etc/system files on both server shall contain the same entries for the database, mainly settings about shared memory and
    semaphores.

Perhaps your hardware / graphics adapter is not supported by Solaris 10.
Take a look at the Solaris Hardware Compatibility List:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/
Now, no need to download any bootable ISO image. Just run this Device Detect tool:

I don't know if it helps. But I had problems with the x-server not starting (didn't even get a gui login just command line) re-setting the network properties seemed to fix it, looks like anything dodgy in the network config stuffs up the start up proceedure.

  • SAP on solaris x86 or sparc

    Hi,
Can you please let me know the advantages of running SAP on Solaris X86 or SPARC machines. Which is recommended?
    Thanks
    Joyce

    > If the compnay has very few end users to work on SAP i.e. less than 50 users, then x86  is suited.
    > FOr large ended systems that is for large number of users to work on SAP, SPARC is better choice.
    > SPARC is recommended.
I'm sorry but this is simply not true.
x86_64 is VERY suited for big systems, we run x86_64 systems with 1000+ users, on Solaris and on Linux.
Solaris on x86_64 is a very good choice, a mature OS with lots of features (zones, ZFS...) running on affordable hardware.
SPARC is a RISC architecture, there are even drawbacks in performance if you use e. g. T-series systems (UltraSparc) for ABAP systems and databases (see Oracle Metalink ID 781763.1 - "Migration from fast single threaded CPU machine to CMT UltraSPARC T1 and T2 results in increased CPU reporting and diminished performance").
So it's a matter of taste and choice - and money.

It is because of UNIX shell. I also faced this error during installation.
First check your shell by the following command.
    $ echo $SHELL
    Then select the below.
    For csh shell
    $ setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    For sh,ksh and bash
    $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
After you do this check the value of DISPLAY variable.
    $ echo $DISPLAY
If the DISPLAY variable is set then run ./runInstaller.
One advice: Keep a complete log of your terminal session. This will help you in future :)

  • How to install Apache Web Server with PHP on Sun Solaris Sparc machine

    Hi,
We are trying to install the Apache Web Server and the PHP package on a Sun Solaris Sparc machine running on SunOS 5.8. We are having compilation problems with the source code of both these packages.
Does anybody know if there are ready solaris packages for Apache and PHP available from where we can download and install instead of source code compilation?
Or any instructions / things to watch for when installing Apache with PHP (if anybody has tried installing Apache with PHP on Sun Solaris earlier) is most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Harish

Apache should be bundled along with Solaris check in "/var/apache" in Solaris 8 and Solaris 9
    php is available at www.php.net
I found an old document for installing PHP maybe this will help.
    Cheers

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Installing PHP 3.x for Apache 1.x.x on Solaris
    Introduction
This document describes how to install PHP for Apache on Solaris.
You should have Apache installed before trying to install PHP.
If you want to use PHP with MySQL then you must install MySQL first.
    Before we Begin
    1. These instructions assume that you have Apache installed according to instructions.
    Getting PHP
    1. You must be logged in as root to perform this installation.
    su root
    2. I save all my downloads in:
    /usr/local/dist
If you don't already have one, you may need to create that directory now:
    mkdir /usr/local/dist
    3. You can get PHP 3.0.14 from here(www.php.net).
    cd /usr/local/dist
    ftp ftp.php.net
    cd pub/distributions
    bin
    get php-3.0.14.tar.gz
    bye
    Installing PHP
    1. We will install PHP in /usr/local/build, but use a tricky tar command
to do it in on hit from the download directory:
    cd /usr/local/dist
    tar xvfz php-3.0.12.tar.gz -C ../build
    Compiling PHP
    1. First let's get where the action is:
    cd /usr/local/build/php-3.0.14
    2. You now have 3 options:
    * Simple PHP install without MySQL - goto step 3
    * Simple PHP install with MySQL - goto step 4
    * Custom PHP install - goto step 5
    3. Simple PHP install without MySQL. Next, jump to step 6.
    ./configure --with-apache=../apache_1.3.12
    4. Simple PHP install with MySQL. MySQL must be installed before you can configure PHP to use it. I recommend that MySQL should always be reachable with /usr/local/mysql. Even if you install it else where you
should create a symbolic link from /usr/local/mysql. Otherwise the compiler can have problems finding the mysqlclient library. The command
    should look like this:
    ./configure with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql with-apache=../apache_1.3.12
    Next, jump to step 6.
    5. Custom PHP install. Take a look at the available configuration directives by using this command:
    ./configure --help
    6. Now we can make the PHP executable. This may take a while.
    make
    7. Now we install the PHP module with:
    make install
Adding the PHP Module to Apache
    1. Now we have to setup Apache to include the PHP module:
    cd ../apache_1.3.12
    2. Re-configure Apache to use the PHP module. You should use your previous Apache configure command along with the PHP activate module directive.
You can see your previous Apache configure command by doing:
    cat config.status
You can configure Apache using the previous command with the added PHP module by doing:
    ./config.status --activate-module=src/modules/php3/libphp3.a
If you used the simple Apache install from instructions the command will look like this:
    ./configure prefix=/usr/local/apache activate-module=src/modules/php3/libphp3.a
    3. Make and install Apache with PHP enabled:
    make
    4. We need to stop the server before installing the files:
    /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl stop
    5. Now we can install the new binaries:
    make install
    6. Start apache again (now running the new php enabled version):
    /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
    Setting Up PHP
    1. We have to tell Apache to pass certain file extensions to PHP. We do this in Apache's httpd.conf file.
    cd /usr/local/apache/conf
    2. Edit the httpd.conf file. If you do a search for php you will find a couple of commented out lines telling Apache to use the PHP module. You should uncomment them to look like this.
    AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3
    AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps
    3. I prefer to use the extension .phtml, you can use whatever extension you like (even .html) by adding lines to httpd.conf like this:
    AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .phtml
    Check that it Works
    1. We have to restart Apache to make these changes take effect on the running server.
    cd /usr/local/apache/bin
    ./apachectl restart
    2. Apache should now be running with PHP enabled. The server version should include PHP/3.0b2.
    ./apachectl status
    Apache Server Status for dev.synop.com
    Server Version: Apache/1.3.9 (Unix) PHP/3.0.12
    Server Built: Oct 25 1999 00:37:07
    3. Now it is time to test PHP with a page. The simplest thing to do is create a page called test.php3. My file is here. This file contains the
    following text:
    <?php phpinfo(); ?>
    4. Point your browser at this file on the virtual host which you used:
    http://localhost/test.php3

  • Needed help in Installing Solaris 10 on sparc box from windows remotely

    Hi All,
I have few Sun Ultra Sparc boxes. I m accessing them only through putty session(serail port) from my windows system.
Now there is a need for me to install Solaris 10 in the sparc box. But the sparc box doesn't have any DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive.
Can somebody help me out to install Solaris on the sparc box with the components I have.
    1) Windows system with putty
    2) External DVD drive
    3) Sun sparc box.
    Thanks for your help,
    T.R.Santhosh

If you run into a problem that causes the machine not to boot, you can't interact with it via putty. You'd need a physical connection, usually either the keyboard and screen or a serial connection. I would always plan to be able to do so during an upgrade.
If you have sufficient disk space, the easiest thing to do would be to copy over the DVD iso, then mount it up with lofi, and do a live upgrade.
Windows doesn't read rockridge format disks. I would worry that having the windows machine read the ISO filesystem and send the files over would cause name issues. That's why getting the full ISO and mounting it locally on the Sparc is best. Fortunately, it doesn't require a physical drive.

  • How to Enable firewall on Solaris 10 SPARC Machine?

    Hi All,

What exactly are you looking for? By default Solaris is a secure operating system, but can be tuned to be more or less secure. The link above on IP Filtering is one way to make a system more secure, and is can be used to set up a firewall.

  • Installing RealTek ethernet card in solaris 7 sparc machine

I inserted RealTek ethernet card in my Solaris-7 Sparc machine. But to work it properly ,need to install driver for the card. I searched a lot but i did't get the driver to download . I have read from some sites that the driver for solaris 7 sparc is not avaliable. How can i solve this problem.?
Anybody please help me to solve the problem.

You can try a NIC driver from RealTek, directly.
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
... but for a SPARC system? That may be problematic.
Does OBP see the device? Use show-devs at the OK prompt.
If it isn't seen at OBP's elementary hardware level, the OS will never use it.
If it is recognized at OBP, then try the manufacturer's drivers.
Return to the forum and let the rest of us know what happens..

  • Need Agent Installer for Solaris (SPARC)

    Hi All,
I have downloaded Grid Control Agent Installer for Solaris from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/agentsoft.html.
When I tried to extract the zip file, I am getting the following error message.
"Can not open file. It does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again."
Even I tried using http://sac.us.oracle.com/download/index.html also but getting the same error.
Please send me the location if you have,
    Thanks
    Sumathi

Most commands are identical. Performance analysis, loading all are similar. Tape interaction, creation of tape devices is going to be pretty much the same.
The differences show up a lot at the hardware level. HBAs aren't usually the same, many drivers (and their quirks) are different between the architectures. If you're debugging connectivity to a tape library, those differences may be critical.
So you can't get as close as you may want, but I'll bet it would still be helpful.

  • Installation Issues - Solaris 10

    Here's the situation.
I've got a sparc machine that I'm trying to install Solaris 10 on. I've verified the equipment in the approved hardware guide, so I'm not worried about that.
I get through the installation process and am asked to reboot without a single problem. The problem occures after the inital reboot. It just starts an endless boot cycle. It'll initialize the memory, hang, flash a bunch of text on the screen (looks a lot like memory addresses, honestly), and then begin the boot sequence again.
Now, this machine was running Solaris 8 on it without problems. I ran the install program because the machine had ancient data on it and I wanted to wipe the system.
I'm at a loss as to why this endless cycle is happening. Ideas are much appreciated.
    Thanks!

It would help if you actually told us what the hardware might be.
For example, all Sun Ultra-2 modules run with Solaris 8.
Some Sun Ultra-2 cpu modules will run with Solaris 10,
and some Sun Ultra-2 cpu modules will not run with Solaris 10, they're too old.
So ... technically the Ultra-2 is a qualified platform for Solaris 10,
but only if you have compatible sub-components.
There are some Fujitsu systems that although they use a SPARC cpu architecture,
they must use Fujitsu-tweaked operating systems, not generic Solaris,
because those cpu modules are Fujitsu SPARC modules.
Your original description of "the situation" is far from informative or complete.
