Remote issues with 2nd gen Apple TV. (locking up)

When using 2nd gen Apple TV with provided remote, I can only scroll through items or use on-screen keyboard for a few moments at a time, and then the remote seems to lock up. After a few seconds, I can move around again, but the cycle continues.
I can type a few words with on-screen keyboard or scroll through a handful of items at a time before the remote seems to lock up and not allow me to move around.

Try holding down menu and the left arrow for 6 seconds

  • Problems with 2nd gen Apple TV dropping network

Hoping somebody can help. I have two second generation Apple TV units that are constantly dropping off my network. I have to re-enter my apple ID and password almost daily. I am on an entirely Mac network, Imac (10.6.7), Airport extreme and express. My other mac devices have no such issues and remain on network without issue. I only have this problem with my apple tv devices. Both have been updated to the latest software version and the issue remains. Does anyone else have this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV's may be experiencing interference, have you tried changing wifi channels.
Check your network settings are correct and try restarting your router. update the routers firmware if appropriate.
I'm assuming the 2 Apple TV's have different names.

That is why I said to restore via iTunes, did you check the link?
This will put it back to factory settings and you can set it up with the new ID once you reconnect with your HDTV. This is not done via ethernet, as per the link you need to connect to the computer via micro usb. You cannot bypass home sharing.
FYI: An Apple ID cannot be deleted so the old one would still exist (even if you no longer use the email account it is associated with).

  • 2nd gen Apple TV sync issues

Just wondering if anyone one else is seeing this problem and if they know of any fixes/workarounds. I have several movie files that have some corrupt frames. If I play them back with my 1st generation apple tv or iTunes they play with no problems, it just plays through the corrupt frames. When I play the same movie with the 2nd gen apple tv when it gets to the corrupt frames the video stops and the audio keeps going. Sometimes if I hit pause then play it will work and start playing OK. Sometimes I have to fast forward a bit. After doing this a few times the movie will finally jump back several chapters.
Also is apple looking into a fix for this problem?
    TIA for any help.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If the movie file is corrupt, almost anything might happen in some circumstances. I wouldn't have thought you can expect Apple to resolve an issue that is caused by a corrupt video file.

Nothing.  The 2nd Gen Touch is OBSOLETE and is WAY past its support life.  If you want to run the newer apps you have to buy a newer iPod.

My 2nd Gen Apple TV seems to have just stopped working with Youtube. Is there a particular reason this has happened ?  All of the other services work correctly.

Apple already have a position on such matters. If you have a problem with one particular service and not others, contact the provider.

However, 3 similar reports, do not a problem make. Perhaps there is a problem, perhaps there isn't, but it really doesn't seem to affect many people if there is, believe me when there is a problem it's quite obvious from the additional traffic it causes in these communities. It's also not exactly clear that you are all seeing exactly the same thing.

Is this a limitation on my MBP due to age, is it the Apple TV, or am I just missing something do stupidly obvious I will be embarassed?

  • 2nd gen apple tv not streaming after last software update

I have 2 2nd gen apple tvs. I updated the software to 5.0 on one but not the other.   The updated apple tv is having streaming issues with my purchased content. Netflix will stream but not my purchased tv shows or movies. Anyone else having this issue?  I tried a reset but that didn't work.   And my other apple tv which i didnt update is working fine.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Damian,
Thank you for taking the time to respond and no chance I thought that was rude.  Unfortunately I had already reset and rebooted prior to posting.  Also I have another 2nd gen apple tv and I stream netflix all the time as well as amazon prime and am not having issues so it's not my connection.  The only difference between my two apple tvs is that I upgraded the software on one (which now isn't working right) and not the other which is still functioning well!  So I am curious if anyone else has experienced this and has a solution.
Thanks again for your ideas and if anything else occurs to you, ping me!

  • 2nd Gen Apple TV & Network Storage

    Hello,
I have been searching the forums and couldn't find anything that was related to my question, but I apologize if this question has been asked and answered many times before.
My question is that I currently own a 2nd gen Apple TV and a entry model mid 2010 iMac 21.5". I live in Canada and our only option is to purchase TV episodes instead of renting which is perfectly fine, however I am running into a concern of filling up my HDD with season after season of my favorite TV shows. I was looking at buying a 'Western Digital MyBook World Edition II 2TB Network Storage Drive' to place on my network that is strictly for all my digital media from iTunes. I was wondering if iTunes on my iMac will be able to detect and play media as if it was still directly on my iMacs HDD, and if so will I be able to stream all my media to my Apple TV like I currently am able to. Will that work? If not what other solutions can I look at for storing my media and having it accessible for my Apple TV without having to load up my iMac HDD?
I also already have a Time Capsule for my network but I want to dedicate the storage of that drive to personal and business documents and not all this media.
Thanks for any answers and help!

    Kaldra wrote:
So I can designate the Network Drive as the storage base for all my files on iTunes, but my iTunes on my iMac will still detect and play the media as if it were still on my HDD.
    yes
If that is the case then will my Apple TV still detect my computer and its iTunes and allow me to stream the files in the same manor?
yes, however bear in mind that by having your media stored on a NAS, you are effectively doubling the amount of network data when playing content on the appletv.
your new setup would essentially be -
    NAS > router > itunes > router > appletv.
    currently it is -
    itunes > router > appletv
if you have a robust network you shouldn't see any difference, however if your network isn't the best (especially WIFI) then you could start to see issue when streaming.

  • 2nd. gen Apple TV not connecting to wi-fi network

Our 2nd. gen Apple TV has been working fine for years but suddenly (I suspect since the upgrade to software v. 6) it has trouble connecting to our wi-fi network, Whenever I turn it on, it says that "Apple TV can't connect to the network," even though when I look at the network settings, it shows the network and full signal strength. All of our other wireless devices work just fine with the network. Restarting it doesn't solve the problem, nor does uplugging it, or resetting it. The only thing that works is to reset the router (we use Time Capsule). Once we do that, everything works fine again. But then the next time we use it, it displays the same message when I turn it on and I have to go through the same steps all over. I don't really want to have to reset the router every time I want to use Apple TV.
I am running 6.0.1 on Apple TV and have the latest update on Time Capsule. Any ideas on what the problem might be and how I might fix it?

My problem solved itself. I think the problem was a conflict between my Apple TV and a printer on my network. For a completely unrelated reason, I had to remove the printer off the network. Once it was gone, Apple TV has been working fine. So, you may want to try removing other things from your network and see if that solves the problem. It was just a fluke that I figured it out.

    Hi clintfromid,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  I would recommend closing all your apps and restarting and maybe resetting as good initial troubleshooting steps for this:

Yes, simply reinstall from your Snow Leopard installer disc.  The reinstall will not erase the hard drive.  After reinstalling you can upgrade to 10.6.6 with your updater.
