Remote Lock Macbook

Hi,
I tried this for fun to see the process from both ends, basically I went to iCloud.com and chose "Lock Macbook" which it prompts me to enter a 4 digit passcode, 1 minute later my MBP shuts down and restarts, now this is where the problem lies, it forgets your startup disk because the folder with question mark pops up, I had to then restart holding alt to select startup disk, but I could select 10.8 recovery partition, which would enable me to reinstall OSX 10.8 bypassing the remote locking code entry....surely theres no point in remote lock then?
Just thought I'd give my 2cents

Following is Apple's support document on lost or stolen products: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2526
It states that they do not have a process to track or flag a lost or stolen product. Without Find My Mac turned on there is not much he can do other than report it to law enforcement.

  • Forgot passcode for remotely locked MacBook. What should I do now?

I just wanted to try out the new "find my mac" feature in iCloud, so I remotely locked my MacBook Pro from my iPod touch. But when I tried to unlock my Mac, it didn't accept the code. Actually I'm quite shure that it's the right code, but it just says "Wrong passcode. Try Again.".
Is there anything that I can do to unlock my MacBook (I also have a TimeMachine backup on an external hard drive).

  • Why do I get a blinking folder with a question mark after remote locking my Macbook?

    Hi,
I wanted to try the remote lock feature of iCloud.
I remotely locked my 17 inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. I received the confirmation email stating that the machine had indeed been locked.
When I went to the machine to unlock it, I was surprised to see a grey screen with a blinking folder. I had expected to see a place for me to enter my PIN. Rebooting the machine revealed the folder again.
What is going on? Did sometihng go wrong resulting in my somehow wiping my hard drive?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

  • How to unlock macbook pro that has been remote locked from the icloud

how do you unlock the macbook pro that has been remotly locked from the icloud because i forgot my password

This question should NOT be answered. Using Find My Mac to lock one's computer is a personal security measure for those whose Macs have been lost or stolen and may be in the hands of criminals. Publicly posting instructions for defeating that measure would be tantamount to abetting theft.
If you have foolishly locked your own computer and need to unlock it, take it to an Apple Store. Be prepared to prove you are its rightful owner.

  • MacBook Pro is remote locked by iCloud

    Hello Everyone,
I was just trying out iCloud and the remote lock feature. When I start up my MacBook Pro Early 2011 I needed to enter a 4 digit key. I submit the same key but it says: "Wrong Password, Try again.". After a few times it did not unlock.
I tried a few things but they all failed:
    1. Trying to boot from CD and reinstall Lion (when I push the ALT key I get a remote lock screen)
    2. To remote the lock screen I tried to remove 1 RAM stick and push down CMD + ALT + P + R. Failed.
    3. Formated the Harddisk and tried to install with the Snow leopard CD (when I push C I get the blinking map with the question mark, when I push ALT I get the remote lock screen.)
Does someone has a solution for my problem?
    Thanks!

  • Remote lock on a time machine restored Macbook.

My CEO had his Mac Air stolen.  We found it on find-my-mac and sent a remote lock command but were unable to recover it or wipe it before it went offline.  We gave him a new Mac and restored from a time machine backup.  Everything was fine until we connected it to the internet and it was remote locked (probably from the command we sent earlier).  Now the passcode he supposedly set it to won't work.  We used icloud to try to reset the passcode but the Mac is still showing offline and it won't send the command.  I've connected it to multiple wireless networks, tried rebooting numerous times.  Because it is locked we can't start in safe mode, reset PVRAM, Target Disk Mode or select a different startup volume.  How can I change the passcode so it works?  Or will the Genius bar be able to help if I can prove we purchased the current Mac Air with an applecare?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello there, Josip.
The following Knowledge Base article provides the information you ware looking for:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
    Particularly:
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you get a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made. When you start up your new Mac for the first time, the Setup Assistant asks you if you would like to restore from backup. If you've already set up your new Mac, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities) to do the same thing.
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac.

The only way you will be able to track that iPod is if it is turned on and connected to a wifi network by the person that has it.

  • Can't lock MacBook on iCloud website

    Hi,
I recenlty tested the macbook remote locking functionality.
I've unlocked the mac (took me an hour and lots of sweating by the way).
The problem is : now i can't use the remote locking functionality anymore because it's greyed out on the website
How do i tell icloud.com that my macbook is OK now ?
    Thanks in advance,
    James

Never mind.  Today, I got another email from Apple pointing me to another video on their website.  I said what the heck and tried it.  This time, I got audio but no video.  But I recalled someone else posting the same problem so found it and someone suggested disabling the DivX extension in Safari preferences.  It worked!  Hopefully that doesn't cause other issues.
I don't know about the rest of you but I was forced by Apple to upgrade to Leopard if I wanted to sync with me.com.  Ever since, I've had consistent problems with almost everything.  It's almost like I'm back using a PC with all the hang ups and program failure message I get on a daily basis.  Almost but not quite.

  • ICloud remote lock needs Internet connection?

If I receive a email saying I have remotely locked a stolen MacBook, does it mean that the MacBook has been connected to Internet?  If so why does it remain "disconnected" on find my iPhone?

No, that's a remote lock, just will make the thief replace the drive or trash the machine, you lose.
You can do something better, you can install Prey
    http://preyproject.com/
Have two accounts on the machine, one with a easy password to guess, and the other is yours with a hard password.
the thief goes into the easy to guess passowrd  General User account and uses the computer, attempts to learn how to crack the Admin password etc while online,
Prey is watching him, getting his location and taking pictures etc. sending it all online. LOL
Take the info to the police and they make a raid.
If you keep your personal files on a extenral drive, and make backups you won't care.

  • Remote lock via iCloud big problems...

I tested out Remote Lock on my iPad and Macbook Air.
On my iPad everything worked fine, but then on my Macbook Air won't accept the password.
I have now tried well over 400 combinations on the numbers I thought was right (and some based on mistypes), and I can be sure that something must have gone terribly wrong.
Okey, I can just reformat, but no, the Remote Lock has put a password on the EFI bootmenu too.
    So I can't reformat it.
Is the EFI password the same as the remote lock password? (it should be right?, because I did not set it manually).
And is there another solution than take in to a service point and be charged $140 (which is 950SEK, Swedish currency) för resetting the EFI password?
I can even show a receipt & id proving ownership, since I'm 100% sure this has to be some kind of bug or something is there any chance I can get out of this without paying?

    The manual expalins this.
    Restore the iphone.

  • Remote lock code forgotten

How can I recover a remote lock code?
My gmail account was hacked and they used iCloud to wipe my new MacBook pro.

Hmm, no one else brave enough to touch this one it seems..... Ok i'll push further.
Av8tor, if you are indeed an innocent victim in all of this, I suggest that you take the computer to an AASP. After all, this is what you are SUPPOSED to know ahead of time before you allow your device to become locked
Only they are supposed to.... ahem... handle the situation after the lock.

  • Lion and remote lock

This evening I was testing the remote lock feature of mobileme/icloud on my ipad and iphone just to see that it worked using the find my iphone app on my iPad 2.
I noticed that my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" running Lion 10.7.1 was showing under devices (presumably from when I installed a previous beta of icloud and forgot to remove it) so I tested the remote lock feature and entered a 4 digit pin and clicked lock. My Macbook pro then rebooted and asked to join a wifi network and then presented me with the pincode screen. So far so good, I was impressed that if I ever did leave or loose it somewhere this would help.
At the point I entered the pin is where my satisfaction dropped as it stated "Wrong passcode, try again" even though I know this is the passcode I set. My macbook pro is now a brick, I cannot get into recovery mode, boot from a cd, unlock. Can anyone give me any help and advice as to how I can reverse this and get back into my macbook? Will I have to call apple or is there a fix for this?
    Cheers
    Nick

    Hi MattToner,
I did resolve the problem but it wasnt a quick fix. Remote lock sets a variable in the PRAM that doesnt clear by holding Cmd Alt P and R. I made a bootable dvd of Lion but every time I booted it, it just went back to the remote lock screen.
I had to reinstall snow leopard by rebooting with the snowleopard cd in the drive and holding down alt, wiping the hard drive and doing a standard installation. Once I was booted into snow leopard, i opened the terminal app and typed the following to clear the nvram:
    sudo nvram -c
This will ask you for your password and then clear the nvram. Im guessing you could plug in a USB/Firewire hard drive and install Snow Leopard to that without messing with your lion install but havent tested so I couldnt tell you.
I then installed Lion which all went fine and I have been using my macbook pro on lion ever since (with remote lock disabled I might add!)
    Hope this works.
