Remote Login and Apple Remote Desktop

I have two macs: Macbook at home and iMac for the road. I know that it is possible to control my iMac while I'm on the road. I know I have to forward Ports 22, 5900, 3283 to do so. I also have Chicken of the VNC. I have an Actiontec Modem as well as an Airport Extreme Basestation (AEBS). Both the Macbook and iMac connect to the internet via Airport at home. Here are my questions: do I need a static IP on the Actiontec modem or on the AEBS? And on which device do I need to forward the ports; the modem of the AEBS? Lastly how do I do this? I've read many sections on www.portforwarding.com and I'm still not making any progress. At this point I don't want to make changes cuz I don't wanna screw anything up. What am I doing wrong?

My post here may help. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4504396#4504396
No need to forward port 22 with Chicken of the VNC you really don't need to port forward at all if your only trying to control 1 machine. "Enable default host" in your NAT setting (the IP of the Mac your wanting to control)

If they have set up port forwarding for you already then that is different.  In that case, then you could be experiencing the bug with the most recent release of ARD (3.7.2) and in particular ARD 3.7.2 and Yosemite ARD version 3.8 clients.  It has been reported numerous times in the forums and to Apple that since 3.7.2, clients are frequently unavailable to connect to despite there being no network issue between the remote computer and client computer.  I have not seen anyone report it who was working from outside the LAN to inside the LAN, but I have the same issue with a number of my own computers that are simply on a different subnet, so it stands rot reason that it would happen from a port forwarding location.
I am sometimes able to resolve the issue locally by SSH connecting into the client computer using Terminal on my admin machine and restarting or relaunching the ARD agent on the remote device, then trying to connect to it again after about 30 seconds.
The Terminal commands for this procedure are as follows, though you might need to include a port number from outside the LAN:
    First:
    ssh ipaddress -l adminusername
    (example: ssh 192.168.1.1 -l macadmin)
    Second:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -restart -agent
After that, waiting about 30 seconds and trying to observe or control usually works, though the computer may still fail to show an online or lit-up status indicator.

You can't, you will need to get a new remote.

  • HT1461 Remote Login and sharing

We are trying to remote login and shareing with network computers and have not been successful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of people have been successful, so it does work.
Can you explain where you want to share from and to (local, across the Internet, via VPN, etc...)
Can you tell us what you tried.
Sharing within the same network is a easy as enabling System Preferences -> Sharing
    Remote Login for ssh
Screen Sharing for, well screen sharing
    File Sharing
Sharing across the Internet is best done using iCloud and Back-to-my-Mac, assuming you are running Lion 10.7.2 (or newer).
If you do not have that version with all Macs involved, or you are using mixed systems, then we need to know what.
The least troublesome across the Internet screen sharing and file transfer would be TeamViewer.com, and it is cross platform..
Once you give us more details, we can tailor the advise to your needs.

  • Remote Login and Password no longer being stored

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but ever since
I upgraded to IE7, Dreamweaver 8 will no longer store my website's
remote login and password (under Remote Info). Every time I re-open
DW and try to upload something, I have to re-enter the info, even
though I check the "save" box every time.

    >I don't know if this is a coincidence or not
No coincidence as you'll see from many many of posts here a
    week.
    Upgrade to DW 8.0.2

I am going to buy wifi camera. I would like to use my N8 as remote control and life remote viewer.
Is there any software for N8 Belle ?

You need to contact the camera manufacturer and ask them if they are releasing an app for the N8 for that purpose.

  • How do I get my icloud login and apple ID to be the same?

My login and apple ID for all my deivces match.  It is just when I login to the iCloud.com where the Apple ID is not the same...  kinda wierd

    Hello there SciFii,
I recommend logging into http://appleid.apple.com with the Apple ID that you use on your devices. What you are looking for is the email address that you log into icloud.com with. If it is there, then great! You can use either one to log into your devices, or icloud.com.
If it is not there and the email you use at icloud.com is its own Apple ID, then I need to point out this section of the iCloud FAQ:
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Shutdown a remote iMac using Apple Remote Desktop and Automator action

    Hi,
I have my iMac and my wife's iMac connected to the same UPS. There is only one USB connector for the UPS that notifies my iMac when its time to shutdown due to a power cut out.
Is there a way for my iMac to then send a command to my wife's iMac (which may be asleep; the iMac not my wife!) and instruct it to shutdown (forcefully)?
The Belkin UPS software enables me to launch an automator action before it shuts down my computer.
    Your help would be appreciated,
    Tony

Unless you already have Apple Remote Desktop, it will almost certainly be cheaper to just buy a second UPS for your wife's iMac than it will be to purchase ARD.
If you do have ARD 3 already, then it looks like it would be possible to create an Automator workflow that would select your wife's iMac and then send the Unix command "shutdown" (look at the man page for shutdown for the usage). I haven't tried doing this, though, so I can't say for sure, but it looks like it would work.

  • How to stop itunes to react to the play key and apple remote?

    Hi,
I guess this one is a popular one:
How can I stop iTunes from starting anytime I hit the "Play" / F8 key? The same for the Apple remote.
I don't want to use iTunes for music playback (It just can't handle my library and lacks tons of options like browse by date, etc.) other players have. I just need it to pump stuff into my iPod Touch (otherwise would have simply removed it from the system completely).
I am using an iMac and Macbook Pro with OSx 10.6.4.
Any working solutions appreciated; ideally an undocumented switch in the OS.
@Apple: This is annoying. The system is all about ease of use and most of the time it works great. Running into an issue like this is simply negating the whole philosophy.
    Thanks and regs

this takes a while but if you want to hear the end of your songs do this:
    1.right click on a song
    2.click on the options tab
3.there is a space that reads: stop time. change that time to five seconds later and you will hear the end of the song
    hope this helps

  • How to use ATV2 with iTunes, DAC and Apple remote

    Hello,
I play my iTunes library through a Wadia i170 dock connected to a Cambridge Audio DacMagic running through a Marantz AV preamp. I bought an ATV2 and I would like to control the music with an iPad using the Apple Remote app.  My ATV is connected to the Marantz via HDMI and i have another HDMI cable running to the TV. Is it possible to do this?
    Thanks!

If you enable Home Sharing in itunes, on iPad and AppleTV then Remote app will allow you to browse itunes content from the iTunes library and play it back on AppleTV using Airplay.  Alternatively the Remote app can control the AppleTV interface directly with iAppleTV requesting/pulling content from itunes as opposed to Airplay sending/pusihing content to AppleTV to play.
Not sure where the Wadia dock comes into this.
Do you dock the iPad with it?
I'd have thought you'd be wanting to hook up the AppleTV optical out to the DacMagic if it supports Toslink or use HDMI or optical direct to the AV amp.
Are you trying to run the system 'headless' with TV off when playing audio - if so, recent software has messed things up and not certain if fixed in that absence of an active HDMI connection can disable audio out over optical.

  • Remote app and apple tv

Is it possible to put the apple tv to sleep with the remote app? With the small apple remote
you press and hold the play/pause button. But I can't seem to find out if remote app will do it.
And also, how do you get to the main menu in apple tv with the remote app. Like youtube, etc.

It seems you have the option to connect the way Scott H described (ie accessing your media library in iTunes) -OR- you can have the iPhone directly access the AppleTV's library. I've done it both ways on mine. The first way means you're streaming wirelessly from your computer, while the second means you're pulling things directly off the AppleTV's hard drive. You can switch back and forth between these methods by going into the Remote program's settings into the "Choose a Library section..." as long as you've set up both your computer and ATV to see the Remote.
Regardless, neither of these methods will accomplish what you want. You can play movies and podcasts on your ATV with the remote, but you can't rent movies, go to YouTube, etc. Hopefully v1.1 will add these things.

  • ITunes 10.0.1 and Apple Remote 2.0

    Hi guys,
After turning the firewall settings on in Sys prefs in Mac OS X 10.6.4 and allowing iTunes 10.0.1 incoming and outgoing connections within the advanced settings, the Apple remote app on my iPhone 4 stops connecting. Once the firewall is disabled its back to functioning.
Anyone has experienced the same malfunction?
    Thanks

Same issue. Two remote airport expresses. iTunes 10.0.1 shows them in the list just fine but you can't select them - it just instantly returns to the computer speaker.
You can't pick them if you choose multiple either - the checkboxes won't stay checked.
Booted the other mac to test - (still on 10.0.0) - that connects fine.
Can't find anything in the logs in Console.app either.

  • Universal Dock and Apple Remote

I have an iMac and iPod Video with a Universal Dock connected to the iMac. When I use my iMac apple remote it also fires up the iPod in the dock. I only want the iMac to respond to the remote. How do I turn off or un-pair the remote from the Universal Dock?

I did, it did not solve the problem. The remote is paired to my iMac but it still activates my iPod (universal dock).

  • Volume control problem with 30GB iPod 3G, Universal Dock, and Apple Remote

I just hooked up my 30GB iPod 3G to the Universal Doc and tried the my new Apple remote. The only buttons on the remote that work in controlling my iPod while on the dock are the play/pause and the skip forward and back buttons.
For some reason the volume up and down buttons don't adjust the volume on my iPod while it's on the dock. Any ideas? Shouldn't the volume up and down work? Or do they only work on the newer iPods?
    Any info appreciated.

    btabz,
Thanks for your response. No the iPod doesn't respond at all--the volume display doesn't come up or change.
When I press the play/pause or either skip forward or back on the remote, the iPod, while on the dock, lights up and responds to the command as it should. But when I press volume up or down on the remote the iPod does not respond at all.
According to Apple's store info on the remote, the volume up/down controls should work. I am wondering if maybe it doesn't work with the 3Gs for some reason. But if that is the case, Apple should indicate that. It is kind of frustrating to not be able to adjust the volume.
    Thanks,

I have a problem with my apple remote and my 5th gen ipod on a dock. I set it up and plug it into a TV, yet when i get into a music video playlist- it will only play 4 songs (the same ones) and then go back to the song selection screen. The same thing happens in the movie "tab" as well.
