Remote Manage computers that are not on my LAN.

Hi.
i want to be able to remote manage laptops & desktops that are not on my LAN all running 10.6.4
i want to be able to ARD and get logs and even changed settings in workgroup manager if i can.
ideas?
would wide afea bonjour achieve this for me? or is there better options ideas out there.
just a note: i would still like to use apple remote desktop. not some web client like log me in.
and also just a random question, if i have laptops that are bound to the directory but the users home folder is on the device. if they were to change there password on the LDAP / login, mail, CalDAV password. would that update the laptop not on our LAN. so the user has to login with there new password?
you might be asking why: new start up company with a lot people spread across to countries. and i wont to enforce password has to change every 28 days for their login, mail, CalDAV, CardDAV etc.

I'm not sure I understand the question. ARD isn't limited to machines on your LAN. You can manage any machine you have TCP/IP connectivity to - in other words, if you can ping the machine you can (probably) manage it via ARD.
The only issue you may have is that the Bonjour auto-discovery mode won't necessarily find remote machines - you obviously don't want it scanning the entire internet for available machines, so you can either use the Scanner and define a range of IP addresses to check, or specify the remote machine's IP address directly.
and also just a random question, if i have laptops that are bound to the directory but the users home folder is on the device. if they were to change there password on the LDAP / login, mail, CalDAV password. would that update the laptop not on our LAN. so the user has to login with there new password?
Impossible to answer with the data provided.
If the user's account is on the Open Directory server, then changing the password on the LDAP server will require them to login to their laptop with their new password.
However, it's also entirely possible that the users have local accounts on their machines and just use Open Directory for server-side functions (mail, etc.). In this mode account 'joe' in Open Directory might not be the same account 'joe' on the Open Directory server. As such, changing the Open Directory server will require the user to use the new password for the server-side functions, even though they continue to log on to the laptop with their old account/password.
Only by looking at the machine's configuration will you know which mode you in (or trying it and seeing what happens, I suppose )
i wont to enforce password has to change every 28 days for their login, mail, CalDAV, CardDAV etc.
Personally, I hate this approach. Forcing users to change passwords frequently results in users choosing weak passwords because they don't have time to learn the muscle memory that eases the typing of complex passwords. Moreover what you'll often find is that users choose the same password stub and just append a number on the end - kind of like 'password1' -> 'password2' -> 'password3', etc., which is barely useful.
It's your company, though, and this is just my personal opinion. A better solution hinges on having an effective notification and account revocation process (i.e. if someone's account gets compromised it can be shut down quickly).

  • Can I use this app to log on to computers that are not in a network

I'd like to be able to log on to a few clients' computers who are not on one network and be able to provide remote tech support.
Will this Remote Desktop app work for that, or does it only work for computers that are all on the same network?

Thanks so much.  I couldn't tell by reading all the literature if it was possible or not and no one at Apple could help.  I had a feeling it wasn't going to work the way I wanted it to.  I will check out LogMeIn and see if that suits better.
Appreciate very much your responding to me so quickly.
    Thank you!

  • My macbook pro, iphone, and ipad can not connect to the internet simultaneously. However my room mates computers that are not apple products are connected to the internet.

Occasionally my macbook, iphone, and ipad would not be connected to the internet at the same time. However, when they can connect, all three are connected at the same time. It is not my internet because my room mates computers are connected to the internet the whole time without any problems. When I can't connect, I can still see the network name on th wifi network search. However, when I click connect, the only message that pops up is can not join network.

  • Is it possible to use Lightroom with multiple computers that are not networked?

I am new to Lightroom although I have been a professional photographer for over 15 years. Currently, I use the software that came with my camera to process my RAW files, Digital Professional Pro by Canon for a Mark II 5D.
I have been evaluating the lasest version of Lightroom to consider purchasing it. So far, I love the expanded ability for image adjustments and enhancements. However, in my current workflow, I need to be able to save the adjustments to be able to transfer the files to another computer. Is this possible with Lightroom? With Digital Pro, I can tweak a RAW file and it will save the adjustments no matter what computer I open the image file on. I need to be able to duplicate this process in order to convey to our production department how I want an image adjusted and cropped.
I downloaded the trail version on two computers, then imported images into Lightroom. Made adjustments, then copied the images to a flash drive.Uploaded images from flash drive to my laptop, then re-imported the images into Lightroom and the adjustments were not saved.
    Thanks for any help.

After some research, my answer lies in the XMP file. Whenever I make adjustments to the image, I can save my adjustments by creating an XMP file (CTRL S). It writes it back to the original image folder so when I burn the folder to hand off the files to my production team, the xmp parleys my image adjustments. They in turn can make adjustments and send them back to me, if needed. Just took awhile to find the information because even though I am kicking the tires on LR4, it was a LR1 video that gave me the infomation.

If the computers are in different locations, use a flash drive.  If they are in the same household on the same network, you can use iTunes Home Sharing.

    Thanks

You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.

You could also go through your messages app and see if you have videos or photos in there. Delete unwanted emails and empty the trash in each account. If you are trying to update over wifi try doing it by plugging into iTunes.

  • HT1349 Apparently you can have 5 computers registered for iTunes.  I have 3 active computers but I guess I have other computers that are still activated that I no longer use.  Is there a way to delete or see what the others are?  Please help!

Apparently you can have 5 computers registered for iTunes.  I have 3 active computers but I guess I have other computers that are still activated that I no longer use and I no longer have as they crashed.  Is there a way to delete or see what the other computers are so that I can go in and delete them?  I've tried to email Apple directly but apparently I need my hardware # and obviously I do not have that # since I don't have the equipment any longer.  Any help is greatly appreicated.  I am trying to add another computer and it won't allow me to as they say I'm at my limit.  Please help!

    Sure.
Just open up iTunes on your computer -> Go to the iTunes Store -> Click your e- maill address (top right corner of the window) -> Type in your password for your Apple ID -> Under Computer Authorisations (underneath your Apple ID account balance and address) -> Press 'Deauthorise All'
-> This will deauthorise all computers and devices from your iTunes account -> you then need to re- authorise any computers/ devices you would like to use with your Apple ID for iTunes content -> to do this, select the Store tab along the menu at the top (where 'File', 'Edit', 'View' etc..... are) -> Then click 'Authorise this Computer' -> Type in your Apple ID -> Voila!
For any iOS devices (non- computers) you wish to re- authorise, these will automatically do so when you go to play iTunes content, download an app or anything like that on those devices!
    Hope this helps!

  • HT202213 I need to delete computers that are no longer active from my home sharing account, how do I do this?

I need to delete computers that are no longer active from my itunes Home sharing account so that I can sign up the new computers.  I am using a Mac laptop. The computers that were previously linked to the Homesharing are no longer available, they have been wiped and are not in the house anymore.   Does anyone know how to do this?

The apps aren't stored in your personal iCloud account and don't use any of your storage.  They are only stored in the App store.  The iCloud symbols are only links to your previous purchases in the App store so you can download them again.  If you don't want to see certain apps, you can hide them in iTunes on your computer as explained here: iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases.  Once hidden in iTunes, you should no longer see them on your phone.

  • I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are not recognized. How can I fix this?

I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are "not recognized". I thought maybe my antivirus software was setting up a firewall, but I have disabled it, so that's not the case. Any suggestions as to  how I can fix this?

If the downloads are gone, it's possible that Windows is removing the downloads based on security policies set in IE. I realize that sounds strange, but it's related to Firefox's feature of submitting downloads to your virus scanner and marking them as having come from the internet.
To test this theory, you could try disabling the scan feature. I assume you have good "real time" antivirus protection which checks every file saved to your hard drive. (If not, you really should get that, and you can use Microsoft's free [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials Microsoft Security Essentials] for now until you have time to review all the available choices.)
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''scan''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone''' to toggle its value.
Firefox now should ignore Windows' download security. Does it change how Windows handles the file?

  • How to get rid of pix in my iphoto library that are not imported?

I needed to clear the memory card of my husband's camera recently, and didn't have the canon software installed on my computer. So I tried using iphoto, but it crashed because the movies are high resolution and I guess iPhoto couldn't handle it. I managed to get them transferred another way, but now every time I launch iPhoto I get a message telling me that there are images in my iPhoto library that are not imported, and asking if I want to import them. If I try to import them, iPhoto crashes again. If I say "cancel" I get the same message again next time. I tried going into the finder to get rid of them but don't know where they are. No matter what I try to throw away, I still get the same message. How to get rid of those photos?

and didn't have the canon software installed on my computer.
You could also have used Image Capture in your Applications Folder.
but it crashed because the movies are high resolution and I guess iPhoto couldn't handle it.
iPhoto managed high resolution just fine. Perhaps you don't have the correct codec.
To solve you more immediate problem: go to your Pictures Folder and there you'll see your iPhoto Library Folder. Open it and inside you'll see a folder called 'Importing' or something close to that. Drag it to the desktop. Restart iPhoto. Does that help?

  • Do IMAQ Cast Image or IMAQ Linear averages give different results when using different computers that are running under Windows XP ?

    Hello
I'm currently developping an image processing algorithm using Labview 7.1 and the associated IMAQ Vision tools. After several tests, I found a weird result. Indeed, I put the labview algorithm - including the IMAQ VI on the library to get sure that I use all the time the same VI - on my memory stick and used it on two different computers. I tested the same picture (still in my memory stick) and had two very different results.
After several hours trying to understand why, I found that there were a difference between the results given by both computers at the very begining of the algorithm. Indeed, I used a JPEG file.
To open it, I first create an Image with IMAQ Create (U8). Then, I open it.
Then in my first sub-VI, I use IMAQ Cast Image to be sure that the picture is a U8 grayscale picture.
Right after that, I use the IMAQ Linear Averages. The results of this VI are different on the two computers.
I tried several time on the same picture : one computer always give me the same result but the two computers give me a different result. So there is no random variable on the results.
So my question is : Do IMAQ Cast Image or IMAQ Linear averages give different results when using different computers that are running under Windows XP ?
My bet is on IMAQ Cast Image but I'm not quite sure and I do not undestand why. The labview and IMAQ are the same on both computers.
The difference between the two computer are above :
    Computer 1 :
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz with a RAM of 1Go. The processor is an Intel(R).
The OS is windows XP Pro 2002
    Computer 2 :
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz with a RAM of 512Mo. The processor is an Intel(R).
The OS is windows XP Pro 2002.
If anybody can help me on this problem, it would be really helpful.
    Regards
    Florence P.

    Hi,
Indeed it's a strange behaviour, could you send me your VI and your JPEG file, (or another file that reproduces) so that I could check this inthere ?
I'll then try to find out what's happening.

  • How do I create a smart playlist of songs that are not in any playlist?

I have zillions of songs and many playlists to manage them. So how do I create a smart playlist that shows songs that are not in any playlist?
An easier answer would be " Playlist > is > None" but this option is not available.
    Any other creative solutions?
(...and a long list of "Playist > is not > Playlist AA" through "Playist > is not > Playlist ZQ" is not a manageable answer as my playlists are too dynamic for that. Such a playlist would always be broken.)

Maybe one of these will help:
This AppleScript will create a text file that will list the iTunes Library tracks which have not been assigned to any playlist.  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=notinanyplaylist
This script searches your iTunes or iPod Library for tracks which have not been included in any Playlists and copies them to a new discrete Playlist.  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=notinanyplaylistplaylist

    Hey Raffiecat,
Thanks for the question. If your iPod is setup to manually manage content, you can add content from multiple libraries:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
When manually managing content, you can add content from multiple libraries to your iPod or iPad. Even when manually managing music, some content may be available from only one library at time. This includes all content on iPhone and video content on iPod and iPad.
You can also learn which content you can import to your new computer from your iPod:
iTunes: Transferring media from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or iPod

Or, if you still have access to the previous computer, you can transfer your iTunes Library:
