Remote Management and VNC issues

We do PC support for another department. We are in the process of deploying the ZEN agent. However, the department we support uses VNC to do application support to their users. Once we have installed the ZEN agent, they are no longer able to use VNC. We have plans to give them console access so they can support their users. However, that is still in the works, so in the mean time, we need to find a fix to this issue. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Jules

We never saw the problem on zen7, it has to be something in zen11. We are still in the upgrade process and it is always a zen11 computer that is on 5901. I'd say it happens 1 in 20 times and a reboot usually fixes it. It hasn't been a big enough problem to troubleshoot.

  • Difference between remote management and vnc

Difference between remote management and vnc

By VNC I will presume you mean 'Screen Sharing'.
Screen Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing is purely for remote control and is based on the VNC protocol with a few extra features added by Apple.
Remote Management in System Preferences does everything Screen Sharing does and is fully compatible with another Mac doing just Screen Sharing, i.e. it allows remote control. However it can also do additional things. It is intended for use with Apple's Remote Desktop Administration software which can use this to send files to a Mac, send (Unix) commands to a Mac and ask for a report from the Mac (e.g. how much RAM it has).
If you don't have Apple Remote Desktop there is no real point enabling Remote Management instead of Screen Sharing.
Both Screen Sharing and Remote Management can also be configured to allow 100% standard VNC connectivity from say a PC, as standard they only accept connections from Macs.

  • Script that enables Remote Management and adds user

I need to make a script that can enable Remote Management and add a user to control it.
I have tried to watch which plist files it uses so I could edit those.
It writes some text in com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist and com.apple.ARDAgent.plist bit I can't find where the user is added.
    Any ideas guys
    Thanks

No need to mess around with .plists. ARD has a command-line admin tool. The syntax is a little funky, but this should give you an idea:
$ sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate -configure -access -on -users john -restart -agent -privs -all
This is all covered in more detail in Apple's technote.

  • Remote Management and Windows VNC clients

    Hey guys,
I recently had a go at getting the built-in VNC server in Leopard (as part of remote management) up and running.
Remote control works flawlessly from other Macs, but it refuses connections to Windows clients most of the time (throws up errors like 'Error waiting for server message' or something).
Any ideas? I thought it might have something to do with the Windows client not understanding the encryption, but haven't found any way to change security settings.
    Thanks in advance!

Have you giving the server a VNC password?
System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Management -> Computer Settings -> VNC viewers may control screen with password: xxxxxxx
What VNC client are you using on Windows. Not all VNC clients are created equal? I know about TightVNC (which has been reported to work), RealVNC, and UltraVNC are 3 that I've heard about.
You can also install your own VNC server (in parallel using a different port or instead of the Mac OS X VNC). Vine Server (aka OSXvnc) has been used successfully for years. After all not all VNC servers are created equal either

  • Remote desktop (and VNC) show black screen

I am using Remote Desktop (or VNC) on a 10.6 laptop to access my 10.6 Mac Pro at work. The desktop Mac is up and awake because I can connect to it by SFTP and pull down files. But when I make a Remote Desktop connection, all I see is a black screen and no password window (to break through the screensaver, as usually happens). This used to work just fine - I don't know what changed. How do I diagnose and/or fix this - why isn't my remote access working?  (btw, I don't know if this matters, but I have 4 monitors on this Desktop Mac Pro, although it used to work just fine).

    Hi,
Please make sure you have installed the correct NIC drivers for your RDS server and PC, and checking the switches, setting the speed of NIC's to auto might help you to solve the problem.
You can also check the following items:
Please try lower screen(no full screen) resolution in Remote Desktop Connection to see whether this issue still exists.
Disable the use of "Bitmap Caching" on the RDP client.
Verity that the server, client and the network equipment using the "MTU" size.

  • Remote Management and WLAN

When using Console One v1.3.6e to Remote View I cannot connect to notebooks using the wireless network. I receive this error: 1858: The connection with the Remote Management Agent has timed out. If the notebook is on the wired LAN the problem disappears. This is the funny part, I downloaded Zen Workstation Browser 4.2 and I can Remote View a notebook on the wireless network. Switch back to Console One and I get the same error message stated above. I noticed that on some of the notebooks the Remote Workstation icon in the taskbar is still visible even when I have set it to not show. The icon does not show on wired machines. This may have no bearing on the first problem at all. Any ideas?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Eugene

  • Remote Management and Screen Sharing hang on activation

    Hi,
I'm trying to activate Remote Management using the Sharing System Preferences pane (http://images.macfixit.com/images/ScreenSharingFigure2.jpg) but after I click the checkbox, the whole System Preferences dialog becomes unresponsive and I have to kill it. I get the same behavior when trying to activate Screen Sharing too.
Remote Management starts fine with the kickstart command:
    sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -activate
    Any idea what's going on?
    Thanks!

This doesn't appear to be a question about Apple Remote Desktop, which is a separate package for managing networked Macs, so you may want to take this up in the Mac OS X 10.5 Networking forum. But yes, as long as you can get the network set up correctly on both ends, you can share a screen from anywhere in the world. Using iChat's screen sharing feature usually works out better when working from a mobile Mac, though; fewer issues with routers and firewalls. LogMeIn is another service that many people have reported using to good effect.

  • Logitech harmony 650 remote Select and Menu issues

Programed my Harmony 650 to work with ATV G2 and noticed that you have to hold down the select button for 2-3seconds in order for it to tell ATV to select.
Also the Menu button is way to sensitive, seems if your directed to the top menu level just by clicking the menu button.
    Any reasons why?

I've just set my Harmony 650 up with my ATV (3rd gen) and ran into the same issue. Turns out it's because I had the original ATV remote paired so it was ignoring the commands. To fix this:
-Using the original remote, navigate to Saettings->General->Remotes and select "Unpair Apple Remote"
-Using the harmony (which should now be able to control the ATV, check by navigating up and down) select "Pair Apple Remote"
    Hope this helps someone

  • Remote App and iTunes issue

I have a Windows MC machine I'm using in my living room. I recently had to reinstall Windows because I was having some minor issues. After reinstalling, I downloaded iTunes. Everything is great, but my iPhone is not showing up as a device in iTunes. My iPhone remote is working on all of my Mac just fine... but my PC just wont see it. I've disabled the firewall, set all the preferences as needed... EVERYTHING SEEMS right. iTunes is seeing shared libraries... it just doesn't see my remote. Please help!

Have had the exact same problem since the last iTunes update came through. remote worked just fine before that.

  • OIM and Remote Manager

Do you know if out of the box connectors bundled(9.0.4.1) are supported using Remote Manager?
Remote Manager and OIM Server are in a different location
    Regards

The majority of the out of the box connectors don't require (or use) remote managers. There are a few exceptions, typically when the target systems don't have network aware libraries available at all or on all the operating systems that the OIM server supports.
You can't use a non-remote manager connector via remote manager as there are required changes in both the forms and the underlying adapter code.

  • Mountain Lion Server: add network user to remote management

    Hi,
So recently I have upgraded from Lion Server to ML Server. A little disappointing, but whatever, I've moved on and got everything almost back to where I had it with Lion.
My last few issues I believe are related but can't quite figure it out. In Lion I have an admin profile and then a network user profile that I used on my MBP bound with AD. I'm at the stage where my nre network user can log in on the server machine but I can't log in as the network user via screen sharing. I can't add a network user to Remote Management, and with Remote Management enabled Screen Sharing is greyed out. I'd really like this to work.
My second problem is that I can't bind my MBP to the server but even when bound the network user account can't log in.
    Any body have  any ideas?
    Thanks!

I had this problem on a clean install.
The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.
    Talk about KISS

  • RV042G Log Email and other issues

The RV042G manual said to use this site for support so here goes.  After owning and operating the RV082 for many years, I recently upgraded to the RV042G V01.  Overall the RV042G hardware appears to function pretty good.  The RV042G has faster throughput, but it is slightly slower in command/control response and boot than the RV082.  I have now owned the RV042G about two days and have found a number of issues.  Specifically, emailing logs doesn't work.
    - Emailing logs does not work.  RV042G does not appear to handle any type of connection authentication, it does not have a place for the senders user name or password.  I have tried SMTP servers that require no authentication and ones that do, none of them work.  RV082 worked fine with the Time Warner Cable (TWC) SMTP server, RV042G does not.  Additionally, there is NO output in the logs to show a failure.  So TWO bugs here.  I have checked settings to ensure no blocking rules, have rebooted, and even did a factory default with no luck and absolutely no mention in the logs anywhere of failure to send.
Email is my primary issue, any suggestions on getting this working would be appreciated.  I've also identified a number of other issues as well and included them here to avoid multiple posts.  These are:
    - Port 0 apparently responds to interrogation and shows CLOSED (not STEALTH per grc.com).  This was NOT the case for the RV082 and is a potential security vulnerability as it cannot be redirected.
    - Port 1 is CLOSED and apparently responds to interrogation.  This was NOT the case for the RV082.  Normally I would be good on the RV082.  I could redirect any OPEN or CLOSED ports to the bit bucket (192.168.1.254 for instance).  BUT, the RV042G Port Forwarding is NOT sending things to the bit bucket and instead decides to OVERRIDE the forwarding and respond to queries.  So there are TWO bugs here.  This is a potential security vulnerability.
    - The ALL Logs tab shows nothing, but sub tabs do until AFTER you hit the clear button, then it works as expected. This happens every time you open the logs.  Another poster identified this problem so this is confirmation of that issue.  Also, once the dialog box for the log has closed, it will not open again until leaving the page and returning.
    - Authentication failures will show up in the System Log but not in the Access Log?
    - HTTPS html interface works fine in Firefox.  However, turn it off and use just HTTP and there is a problem.  Can't see the forms and buttons, can only see the background image.  This isn't as much of a problem as I can just use HTTPS, however, with the RV082 when HTTPS was activated it would open the remote management portal regardless of whether the button was clicked or not. So really a non-issue but a bug none the less.
    - RV082 could send 500 log events, RV042 can only send 100. Again, not a bug but a reduction in capability over the older RV082.
One last thing, your hardware version control numbers and firmware download page are confusing for the RV042G V01.  Found this when I checked if there was a newer version of the firmware than what the RV042G shipped with.  Here is what the firmware update page shows:
"Cisco RV042G Dual Gigabit WAN VPN Router"
         "Firmware Release 4.2.1.02 - RV042, RV082, RV016 firmware 4.2.1.02-tm (V3 hardware required)".
The problem is that you reset the hardware version in the RV042G (V01).  Just seems probable that someone will download the firmware for the RV042 V01 and try to put it on the RV042G V01.
I like the RV042G overall and will wait for updates for these issues (email logs would be nice sooner rather than later as this is an advertised feature).  The RV082 was a great router for a long time ONCE most of the bugs were fixed, hoping the RV042G will be the same.

Guess I spoke too soon.  If Remote Management = Disable and HTTPS = Enable, it will OPEN external access to port 443.  So have to use an access rule to kill it off.  Can STEALTH Port 1 as well with an access rule but have to block all traffic there.  Cannot block Port 0 (make it STEALTH) with an access rule and this needs to be fixed in firmware.
So port forwarding does work but not when sent to the bit bucket, have to use an Access Rule instead.  (You can see this by doing the following: turn off HTTPS and remote management and look at port 443 from the outside of the firewall.  No response at all.  Now enable HTTPS and keep Remote Management disabled and forward port 443 to an unused internal IP address.  The port still shows up as OPEN but won't connect.  Again, the RV082 did not exhibit this behavoir and would simply not provide any response to an external query if forwarded to an unused internal IP address.)
    For clarity, I have the RV042G V01 with Firmware Version :   v4.2.1.02 (Jan 18 2012 14:10:55).

  • Remote management under Sharing will not allow me to add admin user

I have just imaged my iMac lab to Lion. I am using Apple Remote Desktop 3.5. (I have used it for several years and know how to set it up and use it.) The problem I am having is adding my admin account to the list of users that are allowed remote management through sharing in system preferences.
The user list shows every other account, but will not show my admin account. I have imaged labs each year and have never experienced this issue. Not sure where to go from here. I am able to log in to each of the systems using the missing admin account but can't add that user to authorize remote management as it isn't listed. The sytems have recently been updated to 10.7.4.
For example, I have these accounts:
    Me (admin)
    User 1
    User 2
    User 3
    User 4
When I go to system prefs>sharing>remote manage and click the Add to authorize only certain users, I only see User's 1-4. The admin account isn't listed...even if I am not currently logged into that account.
*I have just updated to ARD 3.6.

I can add "Administrators" under Remote Login just not Remote Management.
